I have been told several times that some folks that had certain head injuries and end up of having something happen to their brain (ie: I have Epliepsy which could have been the result from when I fractured my skull when I was young)....these people have "powers" ...to see and feel things...like psychics? I have no idea personally, yes I've heard things...voices, but I never dwell on whom I ever.

It is said that most of the human race only uses about 10% of thier brain. And most of the human brain has yet to even be mapped or studied. So who really knows what mysteries the human mind can hold.

its possible, i mean look at all of the psychics that have helped in investigations and stuff like that, i dont deny it but i highly dout it untill there is some proof

what is it you're actually asking?

if people that have some sort of brain (disorder?) are possible have hearing, seeing, etc. things the normal individual could not.

I think it would be hard to say that it is definitively impossible. I have personally never heard of any specific cases of this. I know that in the last ten years through medicine and science a lot has been learned about the brain that was not known before. We are learning a lot about how neuroplasticity allows stroke victims to use pathways in their brains that have not been used before. I know that the research is still new and relatively very little is known. Anything could be possible though.

Well, you could think of some children who only have half a brain, they have completely normal brain functions, but for a part of your brain to be damaged and then suddenly you have powers, that could be you brain using a part you never use in order to compensate, and regulate your body.

*but on another note, Brain and power, isn't that an oxymoron,lol*

BRAIN POWER!!!!

This isn't something that can be describe or truly understood. The brain is an amazing thing and no poking or prodding from scientists will ever give up those mysterious secrets it holds.

It is fascinating what the brain can do, but how it does it well thats just a unsolvable mystery.

I think it may be possible because as someone said earlier, people only use 10 percent of their brain.

The injury to the brain opens up new 'passageways' to parts of the brain not used before. It makes perfect sense.. when there is trauma to the brain, the body does what it can to heal itself. If part of the healing process opens channels in the mind formerly closed, they would be open and available afterwards.

The brain is the one area of the body medical science knows the least about, so anything is possible. Now, I do not think brain injuries normally give people extra powers, but since I love medical science and know it has not unlocked all the mysteries of the body, I keep my mind open to all possibilities.

I don't believe that a brain injury could give you special powers but maybe there's something more to it. For example if you lose one of your senses your other senses are heightened as well, I guess this is the way I see it.

It maybe possible. The brain injury could cause a part of the brain less used to become active. Like in some cases when the right side of the brain loses function the left side of the brain will adopt those functions.

the human brain is most often called a living super computer. with millions of links to other parts of the brain. if one gets damaged or broken the brain finds a way to by pass it so it works close to the way it was before the injury.... and like a number of people have said most only use ten % of there brains, but there are some with supernatural gifts that use a slight bit more of there brains.

There have been stories like this especially after strokes. People have started talking fluently a language they have never learnt, or talked with a pure accent from a place they have never been. Our brains are definitely more powerful than our bodies limit it to.

If you think you have a psychic ability try to nurcher it, there's plenty of information available.

Not to be the spelling police here, but nuture is spelled nuture. I do not want you to find yourself in someone's journal as the laughingstock of the rave. Yes, I make spelling and grammar errors all the time. Noone is perfect, no matter how they may profess to be so.

Our understanding of the brain is limited as I said in my last post. Noone can know for sure what is actually going on all the time in anyone's head.

Three years ago I had a severe stroke of my left-hemisphere which controls the movement of the right side of the body. It also controls speech and language abilities and is called Aphasia. Basically I was totally paralyzed on my right side unable to walk, talk or use my right hand (I was right-handed).

The brain basically remaps itself, neurons take over for the damaged ones and the brain begins to use parts that have never been used before as we begin recovery of all of the lost abilities.

I made a full recovery but most definitely have no "psychic" or otherwise, abilities. Although it goes to show that our brains are quite capable of many things.

I would say it's possible, like people have said, you only use a small part of your brain. Could be possible that if something happens to one part it trys to use a percentage of the rest? That may cause those effects.

Pandora - it's an interesting concept. If your brain had to "re-map" itself so that you had to re-learn is there anyway to build on that?

There is a process called Hanna Somatics which addresses the effects of Sensory Motor Amnesia. Basically, you hold yourself a certain way and your muscles only retain knowledge of that form making you virtually unable to move any other way. Hanna Somatics readjusts the muscles so they have to "re-learn" how to move. This procedure alone can help slightly "re-map" the brain pathways, and if that's the case can we find other ways of unconventional learning to bring about psychical change?

i would thing that it is possible that brain damage could cause the brain to rewire itself and then it cause itself to activate a part that is usually not active that may cause a psychic ability, but i would think that this would be very rare because of the damge would have to be in just the right spot and only so much.

If the brain works through the nervous system where the senses send information back and forth I can't see why an area wouldn't become more sensitive.
We have examples where people who are blind learn to adapt and develope enhanced hearing, or if deaf the eyes become more sensitive etc.

BloodLife, I know that's the typical story, but have you found any medical studies performed on blind patients which would suggest their auditory muscles and bones have been modified or if they've morphed at all?

i have grandmaul seizers since i was 11 years old i do as well think that this has given me the oppurtunity to communicate the times that i have and feel the things i do

This is not so much about physical muscle but of the nervouse system becoming more acute...

Bone manipulation and morphing, although may happen is not what I refer to.

Even people who loose a limb are compensated with having to develop there other limbs.

When people loose a limb, the other limbs compensate by developing other muscles, a physical difference as a result of the brain "re-training" the body. In some cases, the bone structure may actually be changed slightly because of additional stress placed on the remaining limbs.

My bad. I misunderstood you. Do you think, though, that the physical change could be possible? Would the neuro system changes manifest physically?

I do believe the brain can and compensate, but I dont think it gives extra 'powers' like the original question asked.

The neuro system changes cannot change physically only adapt..........
thet would be like asking if we lost an arm would we grow an extra leg..!

But it's not so absurd. When we lose small bits of skin, we can grow that back. Granted, if the tissue is far too damaged, no amount of skin grafting is going to make it look the same. Veins find and create new pathways when one has become occluded. In MS patients, the nerves develop a new pathways as a result of the myelin sheath calcifying - this is why one of the main symptoms in MS is muscle spasm.

In the brain - after slight damage it is possible to create new pathways, but will it develop supernatural powers? Doubtful. But what if it was a healthy brain and learned the same pathways on top of that? Is there a possibility?

One if we only used 10% of our brains we'd all be drooling idiots. We use all of our brains although much isn't known about how they work or why science is far behind on this subject as far as people having special power's due to an accident what of those that have never had a brain injury?

i know its not a power but a kid had an operation on his one day and the next he was peaking differently like a new voice at first it was normal then he got like a posh voice

Again I state what of those that have no injury to their brain's. Some are born with talents are they also brain injured?

I think in some case genetics play a role in everything about us

I have temporal and frontal lobe problems and have full sensory hallucinations. I much prefer to think of it as being an issue with my brain than actually for even a moment thinking the things I see, feel, hear, taste and smell are actually there. I am sure it is possible, I will just not happily admit to it being anything other than my minds creation.

my sister has had some serios brain trama and from this day she is always thinking some one is out to get her also because she has incountered so much drama as well to..

well I guess that certain things may happen to some yet it mightn't happen to others because I have a friend who has Epliepsy and she can't do anything.

Maybe when one part of the brain dies and other part wakes up. Parts that hold power. I was born with the "powers" I have so I don't really know.

an injury to any part of the brain CAN cause other parts of the brain to take over for the injured part,there could be a connection between the two but so little is really know about the human brain that there really is no way of knowing at this time anyway.

**Let me clear something up real fast.**

The idea that we only use 10% of our brain is actually a misnomer.

The brain is made up of 2 types of tissue,
Grey Matter (10%) is made up of the cell bodies and is responsible for
actual thought. Grey Matter is like the computer itself.

White Matter (90%) is made up of the cell axons and other components. White matter is like the cables of a computer system.

Thus it is not possible to "think" with more than 10% of our brain because only 10% is designed for thinking. We use the whole brain it's functions are simply divided.

That could be possible. Maybe the accident or even whatever happend to a person, openend a door to new things and exsitences, That werent opened until the incident

But along the topic of this thread. It is very much possible for a damaged brain to re-wire itself and fuction normaly. You can have upwards of 50% of your brain removed and after therapy you may still function perfectly normal.

Damges can also send parts of your brain into overdrive thus increasing certian abilities.

I think it's very possible for people that have gotten head injuries to develop new senses or "powers" I've never heard of any, and don't have any, but I think it's possible.

My personal opinion on this topic is this:

When one part of your bodys functions or parts isn't running at full steam another part or function picks up and compensates for the non working part or function.

An example and its i believe been proven in many cases or stuff like what im about to type out.

Someone is blind so what part is compensating? The persons ears. Their hearing correct?

So my assumption is much the same that if a person has an accident or is born with a birth defect or disorder of some kind another part or function will compensate where the lacking or not working part or function can't. Thats my story and i'm sticking to it. Does make sense though. hehe

As Xzavier has already stated, injuries to the brain can heal in time. I know a couple of individuals including whom after taking hits to the head, develope a sort of ability to see what no one else can see, such as aura fields, and chakra points, as well as the paranormal.

It happens sometimes, but only if certain points of the brain are hit, such as the frontal lobe, or cranial lobe...Two minor places to be hit, and hardly used, but when activated can resort to said abilities.

Xzavier - the white part is like the cables? So if you shorten those cables, would you have a faster "response" time to your thoughts?
