This is the very first vampire movie. It was filmed by german silent film director, F. W. Murnau, to be his interpretation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. When Murnau was unable to secure the rights from Stoker's wife, he changed the names of people and places, but there is no doubt of the origin of the story. Having said this, do not judge it against Dracula. It is a masterpiece all on its own. It was released in Germany in 1922 under the title Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens, meaning, Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror, and it has been released on video under that name. When the film was shown in American theatres in 1929, the title was changed to Nosferatu, the Vampire.
By modern standards, this film can be hard to watch. You cannot watch this movie expecting any modern special effects or even modern cinematography. One must be able to appreciate the black and white, silent era films to truly enjoy this movie, or be a true die-hard vampire movie fan. But if you qualify for either case, you must see this film. It is charming in parts, and geniunely frightening in others. One does not have to use too much imagination to understand what 1920's society felt as they had their first taste of vampires in cinema.
Clearly set the stage for future vampire movies...
You want old, you want scary; you want to see the first that would set the trend for Vampire movies? Then this is it!!! Even though it is in black and white F.W. Murnau’s creepy adaptation of Nosferatu sets the stage. I am a big movie buff and have to say that this is well worth it. Many of us grew up with color movies but nothing can compare to B & W. Moods are set, shadows take us away in to other worlds that may creep around our house. Don't close your eyes at night for the Nosfuratu might just be waiting in the wings.
HEY this was made in the 20's and its still better then most hollywood trash churned out these days, pay it some respect, buy yourself a copy.
I'm looking for a copy, actually.
I would be interested in seeing this... is it that hard to find as a rental??
Excellent film, but the GODDAMN MUSIC!!.... ...really gets to you after a while..
