Is it fear for goths/punks/headbangers..etc to be misunderstood by others just by the way they dress or by what they believe in???
Aren't we the same just in different clothing???
Don't we have feelings too??
or we don't matter because we are the minority???
Yes, we are all the same base, but ppl tend to be affraid of unkown things and its the same with the fear of ppl which are different.
humanity fears the unknown.....this thing happens all the time
they use to fear the moon before they went up on it
theres no use crying about...move on
OK.
Now you can tell from my avatar what stereotype people shout at me in the street :-) and as far as Im concerned, we are all people, and people as a whole fear what they dont know.
HOWEVER
Do you know how many profiles I have seen on this site lately saying
"I hate preps" or
"I hate normal people" or
"I hate trendy people."
Let us not have a rant about how all the poor goths out there are stereotyped, as in doing it,
We stereotype ourselves.
Everyone makes judgements on others, whether it be aloud or even subconsciously, it cannot be helped. However, remember that everyone is responsible for prejudice.
*sighs*
But how can you say you hate an entire section of society? There may be a really nice 'prep' out there soemwhere who you would get on really well with if only you talked to eachother...
Actually, you know what?
Never mind.
lol I'm sorry Echo I was just trying to get a rise out of you. I do like preps, one of my best friends is a prep and even my own sister is a prep and we are on quite good terms. I care very little for what stereotype a person wants to represent. I take stereotypes more of a thing to joke about than to use as a way to hate people for senseless reasons.
I agree with you SimpLesLyDeAd, most ppl say that i dress this way to attract attention, or to pretend to be depressed, I just dress like this n hear this kind of music cause I like it and will never change for no one.Stereotyping is bad but still everyone lives with it.
I said I didn't like preps, never said I hated them. Hate is too strong an emotion to be used in such a trivial thing. I mainly said after what Echo wrote to see the type of reaction people would have. What I wrote after is how I truly feel, I just like to joke around and have some fun in a conversation.
Echo, you ve said it as I ment it, I have totally same opinion and I really dont like labeling people. I hate it.
I met lots of ppl and they were from all sortes...And I can say that those or that were worst...
The life taught me it is not worth...Five years ago when I went on a High school, the first person from my class I saw was a girl- definetlynot my type o person...but after few months ...we are best friends till now, because what is outside is ussually (or can be) different than the inner side...
there are some preps and other people i get along with but not many.
Sorry- I wanted to say that I CANT say who was worse...
=)
I dont like people with numbers in their names.... you want a rise out of me dear? You wont get one :-)
I just wanted to say that I agree entirely with Echo's original post in this thread.
All stereotyping is, is ignorance and fear of the unknown. Simply.
Thankyou anais, oh and for the recorde I have nothing against those with numbers in their names :-)
Glides away to let this transpire.
*Echo is just right...we should promote her to a teacher
lord i hate stereotypes! i just ignore em.
people are ignorant and fear what they don't know...i don' think it has anything to do with minority unless it's at my old high skool bleh. but dumb unopen minded people are so used to their ways and custom, that when something else different comes along they have no idea and don't understand at all. it's kinda like algebra in my situation, i didnt understand it and i HATED IT becuase i didn't know it or understand. Only thing is im not ignorant like that with people...lables and stereotypes go in on ear and out my other.
stereo types are wrong but can be fun, my sister and i are really different and she is always bagging on me for me listeing to Linkin Park and AFI but thats ok cus i always shut her out i just have to remind her that she is the one listeing to n'sync and b2k ugh i hope thats the last time i type those names... *quivers because a chill goes down his spine* but the differences between us makes everyday fun as we get each other for our likes, her HOURS in the bath room is one of the things i get her for and my green hair, she calls me a freak for that, but it makes everyday fun...
yeah Manny... stereo typing can be fun..
i think we all do it and then we are like "why do they stereo type me??"
c'mon people u know u do it...
do it and i'm ashame of it..
*cries*
no need for crying, its a natural reaction to avoid or judge something we do not understand.
I am me... if anyone doesn't like that, then it's there loss.. sterotype me if you like, it doesn't bother me. I know who I am, and people who don't want to take the time to get to know me because of my lifestyle, are not worth my time anyways....
When you purposely set yourself off from the norm you are making yourself different. Different is not understood by humans.
What is not understood is feared.
What is feared is fled from or to be destroyed.
everything has its price.....
this is one you pay for the lifestyle.
mew mew
insticts that has served the human race for a very very very long time...
cannot be changed only modifed...
i think people missjudge goths....i use to till i got to know some and there are really cool people and i hate what people say about them
U see Ellie, u did it also, so you should understand thier point of wiev a bit too...
I dont think everyones reading the thread though Thera.
well, everyone steriotypes. i love the fact that im gothic and different from others because frankly there are alot of stupid people out there. and its not just the goths that get steriotyped, we steriotype preps and jocks and blondes cheerleaders, ect. so if we dont stop why will they? everyone does it and plus goths arnt a minoraty in some places like in cali goths and punks are everywere, at least were i was
Sterotyping. Take racial or ethnic stereotypes for example, so called labels or categories that people use to define or describe others. It helps us to understand cultures and the people. So without this sterotyping, you would not know or understand certain groups as much.. it is not all bad.. Sterotyping can actually help.. Why can people not see the good in situation, subject and life.. insted of looking at all the bad? Or is it because this is a majority 'goth' site.. and all they think of is dark and death (joke).. you get me?
i don't stereotype people i know what thats like and i don't like it. so i do unto others as i would have them do unto me.
dont know why people bother with labels... it just takes so much of the fun out of discovery...
acting the victim is what makes people label you most of the time. get on with your life. y the hell should you care what anyone thinks? they wanna be preps... who the hell cares its their own personal choice just like its your personal choice to be who you are. live and let live.
A Place for everything and everything in it's place
Isnt that how humans function?
A label is just that and can be changed at will as fits.
An apple is an apple is an apple
In the mid of night you see a bunch wear bandannas and throwing gang signs are you going to walk up and ask for help or walk away when you car has a flat and no spare?
hmm... im not soup dont label me... ?? Because each person labels me differently, just the simple fact that some people cant accept things for just simply who they are. Others just have nothing better to do I guess besides labeling to piss people off and get something started.
lol everyone sees me and my frineds walking dressed in black walking and they grab there kids or yell at them to get inside like were some evil force that might kill there kids and all that stuff shit i bleed the smae blood as the next person and u know what screw um cuz they want to be ingorent and not give the reason for hating or stereotyping.. cuz with out reason they r jsut another yes man jumpin on the ban wagon... if u wanna hate/stereotype/or anything have a vaild and justable reason don't do it cuz the neighbor or the person down the block does it
lol misfit it happed the same to me and mum calls me satanist, witch and other names cause of my style...*shakes head*
I am who I am..............Who am I with all the stereotyping out there i dont even know who I am...........wait what was I talking about
When you say you are Goth, or Vamp, or prep or what ever, then you are stereotyping yourself ... I am me .. that's who and what I am, take it or leave it .. I dress how I want, i listen to what I want .. I am me
Yes on this wud fit a quote that: Dont do to yourself what u dont want to be done to you =)
Its true. I never did it I wored what i wanted, not what was in fashion or what my friends did or so.
Dont get me started on stereotyping. "Never judge a book by its cover".
I jus wish that everybody (including "preps" and all) could jus be themselves and be happy I don't mind bein stereotyped it don't bother me I jus don't do it myself because I like to see the ppl not the clothes or the religion or whatever I jus like ppl and if there closed minded or an idiot basically then i don't get to know them or cause a fuss that way everybody 9to a certain extent) is happy :)
ster·e·o·type ( P ) Pronunciation Key (str--tp, stîr-)
n.
A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.
Printing. A metal printing plate cast from a matrix molded from a raised printing surface, such as type.
those who are simple minded and can not fathom the concept of individuality are the ones who embrace such routines. It is easier to simple place someone in a subculture than to get to know them.
i agree with alot of ppl here but most ppl only stereotype other cause they want other ppl to be like them and like a lot of u said we all fear wha t we don't understand so what we do we try to understand it by put a lable on it thats how i see it
I've been called soo many different things I don’t know what I am…….I don’t even know If I'm real what If I’m not then what is this ...............Ow my brain hurts!
Aye labels a age old topic. It will always exist to me its just ppl not wanting to take the time to know otheres. God im rambling long story short i dont like it or aprove of it .
I find that they are no longer afraid of us. But that they love us for giving american eagle something new to sell. Punk, grunge, goth ---they were all stolen by the fucking preps of todays society because they wanted to be cooler than us and degrade us and make us come up with a new way to differenciate between us and them and we were winning. But now with Bush in office---we lost.
I will stand proud and say I stereotype people. I think even people that say that don't either have or do at some point in time.
First impressions are everything in life. So we stereotype ourselves in the way we act, dress, carry ourself, and even enteract with others.
I know I have been to places where there are people who dress a bit on the skimpy side. So I have it in my mind that they are well.. slutty.
A majority have/get/give lables to others. Its life. Its going to happen. I am sure even back ages ago lables were around. Its the facts of life.
I think its wrong to an extent.. but, I will say this if someone stereotypes me as wierd.. I will do my best to freak then out.
::wink::
everybode judges everybode wheth you like it or not how you choose to react to their comments or concerns is totaly up to you.
Stereotyping is a form of judging someone into a group of others that have something in common. With that being said, everyone is guilty at one time or another of being judgemental of someone else.
Those of you who say you don't stereotype are just fooling yourself. Stereotyping in and of itself is not evil. It is sometimes even nessicary.
And before you blow up on me, It's not stereotyping that everyone is against. It's discrimination of stereotypes that I consider evil. After all everyone stereotypes, but not everyone discriminates because of it.
SOmetimes I think people live in a fantasy world if they say they dont stereotype. I have seen even the sweetest people do it. And let me tell you when you get really old.. you will be stereotyping kids. So if you dont do it now. Then you will then.. hahaha
So now everyone is stereotyping stereotypers :-S
If everyone does it, then it is simply a part of luife. I have already said my piece on this, but it does seem that everyone is now ripping into thgose who generalise, although we openly admit that we all do it.
It can sometimes be used in comedy, and many american teen films wouldn't exist without the cliche of what the different students are like.
stereotyping is what people do i learn to live with it. not being caucasian i get a lot of shit from people saying why do i chose this path and so on. My response it this to each thier own i bleed you bleed so hey lets just leave it at that. for one to just judge without seeking understanding is just wrong this path i didn't really choose it seems like i was cursed or destined to be in this crowed for some reason i was always hated by the norm and popular so yeah just ignore those fools
they stereotype it because they dont understand it or they fear it. its a sign of weakness if you ask me.
being a student of human nature there is one thing I have learned about stereotypes...they exist for a reason.....
think i'll put on the blast armour now....
but seriously it is true.....
when you look at a group of jocks and you move away from them so they do not harass you you have just stereotyped them......before they got a chance to do it to you.... we all do it all the time....those who say they don't lie only to themselves....I do it....I don't like that I do it..but life is about getting past our predjudices...personally I stereotype old drivers.....I have been hit more than once by them....so I find it a hard stereotype to disagree with....rationally I know not all old people are bad drivers...but I am edgy around all of them now.....
it is a normal response.....we are creatures who generalize.....like it or hate it it is a defining truth of our species.....
the simple truth here is all of you who say you hate people who stereotype others.....have just sterotyped those people.......
something to think on....
i think stereotyping is so wrong cause if you look at me and think that i am a loner but i love to be around people so why do people stereotype because as humans we tend to make things easier on us cause life is complated as it is.
I think that for as long as there has been the human beast inhabiting this small island we call earth, there has been a target group and a dominant group ...
the struggle is to break away from the prejudices and generalizations that sustain stereotyping ...
for me I must always remember that I am part of someone's target group and that I am part of someone's dominant group ... and most importantly steer away from the hate ...
and i love to be different....so people labal
and that is so sad......i try my hardest to
not read a person by the looks...most of the time there is a great person there underneth.......stereotypes.....a sad human bad habit...... thats worse then
smoking....or aids....combind......
stereotyping is wrong but can be fun at times i mean like these common ones
all asians are martial artists
all black males are well endowed
if you're jewish your probly rich or have a big nose
and the list goes on.....
sometimes its just redicilous like the sniper case we had in the past year where in the profile they were looking for a midage white male when it was this jamiacan guy doin the killing. i just think they are fun at times but most of the time stupid and annoying
yes we are the same but ppl are to stupid and blind to what they want to kno or see they treat u wrong or fear us....so they dont see us as regular ppl w/ feelings
Everything and everyone has been given a label since the beginning of time. One would think that you all would be used to it by now. Let it go. Worry about more important things.
Daermon, gotta agree with you here...i was reading to see if anyone would comment on that.
Stereotypes can suck and can be unfair and can make people feel bad, but in some cases, particularly in regards to sub-cultures, I think they can just be the result of...learning from experience.
Based on my mall experiences from 10 years ago....:
If the guys at the mall with the baggy jeans and the bandanas tend to be the ones that kick your friend's asses...you're probably going to develop a distaste for them even if you recognize that not everyone dressed like that was personally involved in your friends' ass-kicking or even condoned or knew about it. If it happens a couple of times, eventually, you see someone dressed like that, and your mind goes "hmm. that kinda looks like the guy who gave mike the black eye. maybe i'll duck into a store now...or at least, not give him a friendly wave." and if one of those guys sees you look away and is offended and hurt that you're rejecting him based on his appearance...it's a shame, but you have your reasons and if he really wants to be accepted by you, he's just gotta try a little harder to show you that he's not one of the bad guys.
I dont know...I have a paper to write and I'm looking for distractions....thus rambling...
