When I went to the morgue I found out through one of the students within the group that Zombies do in fact exist in Real Life...YES ladies and gentlemen....Zombies DO exist; Although not Hollywood's blood and gore zombies. It took a few minutes for me to take this in and actually accept it. I couldn't believe what I was being told. So, as soon as I got home and sat down in my computer I decided to look this up and research it....to my amazement, these people were not kidding me.

Zombies
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
by James Dilworth
A zombie is a dead person that is brought back to life through means of Vodoun or necromancy, destroying the mental processes of this person through the process. Most people consider zombies only to be the stuff of horror books and movies, but they do exist in Haiti in the present day. Thousands of people in Haiti are considered to be zombies, some of which lead normal everyday lives with families, jobs and are respected citizens. It¹s even considered to be a crime to make a zombie in Haiti.
Haitian Penal Code:
Article 249. It shall also be qualified as attempted murder the employment which may be made against any person of substances which, without causing actual death, produce a lethargic coma more or less prolonged. If, after the person had been buried, the act shall be considered murder no matter what result follows.
To make a zombie, a voodoo practitioner makes a potion that consists of mainly the poison of the pufferfish (one of the strongest nerve poisons known to man, the clinical drug norcuron has similar effects and is used during surgery) that is given to the intended victim. This causes severe neurological damage, primarily effecting the left side of the brain (the left side of the brain controls speech, memory and motor skills). The victim suddenly becomes lethargic, then slowly seems to die. In reality, the victim¹s respiration and pulse becomes so slow that it is nearly impossible to detect. The victim retains full awareness as he is taken to the hospital, then perhaps to the morgue and finally as they are buried alive. Then, at the voodoo practitioner¹s leisure does he come to retrieve the victim, now become a slave, as a commodity (at one time it was said that most of the slaves who worked in the sugar cane plantations of Haiti were zombies. One case in 1918 had a voodoo priest named Ti Joseph who ran a gang of laborers for the American Sugar Corporation, who took the money they received and fed the workers only unsalted porridge). A zombie will remain in a robot-like state indefinitely, until he tastes either salt or meat(so much for ³The Night of the Living Dead²). Then the zombie becomes aware of their state, immediately returning to the grave. The reality behind the zombie has only been taken seriously by medical science within the last ten years, since the use of CAT scans of the brain, along with the confessions of voodoo priests, explaining their methods. Previous to that, zombies were considered mental defective by science or explained as stunts to try to confuse scientists.
There are many examples of zombies in modern day Haiti. Papa Doc Duvallier the dictator of Haiti from 1957 to 1971 had a private army that was said to consist of zombies, called tonton macoutes. These people were said to be in trances and they followed every command that Duvallier gave them. Duvallier was also a devout voodooist, as are many people in Haiti, who lead a voodoo church¹ with many followers. He also claimed that he was immortal and he would rule Haiti forever¹, promising to return after his death to rule again. After his death (a heart attack), he did not come back, although a guard was placed at his tomb, to insure that he would not try to escape, or so someone wouldn¹t try to steal the body (this is a common practice in Haiti, along with the padlocking of tombs, for the same reason). There are also many stories of people that die, then many years later return to the shock and surprise of relatives. A man named Caesar returned 18 years after he died to marry, have three children and die again, 30 years after he was originally buried. Another case involved a student from a village Port-au-Prince who had been shot in a robbery attempt. Six months later, the student returned to his parent¹s house as a zombie. At first it was possible to talk with the man, and he related the story of his murder, a voodoo witch doctor stealing his body from the ambulance before he reached hospital and his transformation into a zombie. As time went on, he became unable to communicate, he grew more and more lethargic and died.
A case reported a writer named Stephen Bonsal described a zombie he witnessed in 1912 in this way:³A man had at intervals a high fever he had joined a foreign mission church and the head of the mission saw the patient die. He assisted at the funeral and saw the dead man buried. Some days later the supposedly dead man was found dressed in grave clothes, tied to a tree, moaning. The poor wretch soon recovered his voice but not his mind. He was indentifed by his wife, by the psysicain who ahd prounced him dead, and by the clergyman. The victim recognized no-one, and his days were spent moaning inarticulate words no-one could understand²

yeah i did a report on haiti once and i have read something about that i found it really interesting.
Wow I always thought it might be true, I can't believe it really is!
I don't know much about Haiti, but I know alot about zombies. (They smell bad.. but then so do ravers... lol) I wouldn't doubt it for a minute though..
DB, will you post links to where you found this information? It's be fascinating to take this inquiry a few steps further.
Thanks, Sugar!
Very interesting article. I heard about that poison. It's a powder, that is supposed to be blowend in peoples faces, thus getting to the blood streem by the lungs, but I thought it was fiction..know what? Gonna google for more.
great thread
yes they are real. there have been many documented cases thank you for posting this maybe more people will start to believe.
Thank you DarknessBound.
Here's what I found concerning the origin of the word Zombie:
"The word zombie is derived from the Congo word, "nzambi", which means, "spirit of a dead person". The first references to zombies were discovered in Haiti, a tiny Caribbean island that won its independence from French slavers in 1804 and began creating its own unique culture and way of life - heavily influenced by the African Dahomeny religion of many gods, and the pretence of Catholicism that it hid under when waves of missionaries tried to crush their religion."
found at: http://linus.it.uts.edu.au/~iwoolf/txt/discovery/zombies.htm.
So, by talking about zombies, can we be talking about spiritual slavery? A defense against those who opress, and an attack to those that are hated by whatever reason?
I also found the recepy for a drink made in Haiti called zombie, but I'll put it in the sandbox
I've heard a few things about this before. There was a documentery done on the history channel about vodoo and they had a segment on zombies. Through my personal studies I've encountered a piece on how to reseruct the dead into a zombie like state. This was through necronomacy. I've heard about people bringing people back alive to zombies in other cities such as new orleans. Actually here in south carolina towards charleston there are many practicioners of voddo that does it. It seems to be a very common thing in the west indies. There was a paper done on this at the local university if I can find a copy of it I will share it.
interesting. An army of supposed zombies...... Night of the Living Dead anyone(if they were more like the movie kind)?
Supposedly the Haitian government is selling off these Zombies as slaves.
I found an add for them that reads as follows:
Wanna buy a zombie? You can pick up some great deals on the undead from the Haitian government, which is trying to unload thousands of the walking corpses -- at less per head than you'd pay for a decent TV.
"Imagine having your very own slave who will mindlessly obey you, no matter what you order him or her to do," says a government spokesman.
"A zombie will work all day and all night if you want him to, everything from farm labor to house cleaning, and all you have to feed him is oat mush."
Haitian officials say they're turning to sales of the undead to relieve the critical over-supply of zombies, which is dragging down their failing economy even further. Haiti's upper- and middle- class population has shrunk to almost nothing, leaving hundreds of zombie servants unoccupied.
---------
I think this is totally wrong. Something needs to be done about it. These Zombie people are not entirely dead per say. They have severe brain damage due to the things done to them prior to becoming Zombies, and are victims of cruelty and discrimination.
Also, for information's sake...the way the priests revive these Zombies from their "almost dead" stage is by spreading a type of salt through their respiratory system...This salt revives them just enough to be walking around aimlessly, although still with permanent brain damage; reason why they are called zombies, practically walking vegetables after a deep coma.
I've seen that ad before. I don't think its real... lol
It might not be, but you never know what people are capable of, you dont live in Haiti to know such thing...I think it could happen...humans are cruel by nature.
From what i've heard about Haiti, its a pretty fucked up place.
Exactly my point....we don't have the slightest clue to judge if it happens or not...The government doesn't even know what they are doing anymore. The people suffer, and out of desperation many things are done and tried to make their own lives easier...Zombie slavery might be one of them....*shrug* ...I dont know it is just a theory.
The victims described in that article would not exactly be zombies. The victims did not die, and were not reanimated. But, from what I've read about the poisons found in pufferfish, if the dosage was very carefully controlled, it would cause the effects described. Although, I have never heard of people staying in this state for extremely prolonged periods of time, nor being revived by salt and meat.
wow...i always thought that zombies were just made up by hollywood and fictional writers....i mean i figured they had at some point been based on fact, but, things get so twisted...now i wanna go to haiti and learn the voodoo ways and make myself my own zombie...
Can I come down and make one with you? I want one.. maybe somebody will actually clean the house then!
Read Serpent and the rainbow (not the movie), it's interesting. Wade Davis was a doctor who went to hati to investigate Zombies...
Now that I think about it, my own personal servitor would be nice, as I wouldn't have to clean my bathroom and such. I might have like 4 for my body guards for protection (its always nice to have meatshields standing by) and for the ability to laugh evilly as my zombies stole me things like cars, money, and food. I, of course being the fair lord would give them nutritious things to eat and have them build themselves a little cabin of sorts where they would be kept until I needed them.
kinda the same theory as Wes Cravens "the serpent and the rainbow" which is ...if I'm not mistaken loosely based on actual events
I have read many stories of zombies in Haiti. The ones I read were based on true events and stories.
very cryptic yet very real. its amazing how much we truly DON'T know about what we pretend to practice.kinda makes ya think
Coincidantly(I think I spelled it wrong)I was discussing this topic with a group last wkd,and yes that info was right and very detailed..
all sounding very true until the add, thats not true, i bet.
but yes it seams very likely
Hmm Im pretty sure on what I know. That kind of Vodunism is Black Magic or Blood magic/Evil Karma. They forcefully take the body and soul of the zombie. It is very widely frowned upon in the Original African Vodunism. Though I would not doubt that being done in the slightest. People become greedy, and dont' care what they have to do even if they kill a person to get it, in this case they kill them and enslave them.
Jaysus, DB. Thanks for the info, I think. :)
I won't be sleeping right knowing that Zombies are real though!!
this is very interesting information. thank you for that :)
Awww man, they're real? Now I'm never gonna sleep. Zombies are the thing I fear most in the world....just great. :(
very interesting read. it makes me want to do more research. thx
i always thought it was true but i never would have belived it was
They're not kidding. Voodoo sorcerers who create zombies mix a certain concoction of toxins that, if are too much, can kill a person, but, if in the right combination and measure, can make it seem as though the person is dead.
For that reason, the person is deemed dead because he/she actually doesn't show any outward appearances of life. The "zombification," unfortunately causes a great deal of neuro deficiencies due to the amount of time that the brain is without oxygen. They wake up severely retarded and, due to the fact that their family was told that they were dead, are deemed as zombies. It's really not all that surprising.
Watch the movie, "The Serpent and the Rainbow"... It is a true story, with a little hollywood flare... Wonderful representation...
If I'm not mistaken this "Zombified" persons don't last more then a couple of weeks.

Boffins create zombie dogs
From: By Nick Buchan of NEWS.com.au
June 27, 2005
Eerie ... boffins have brought dead dogs back to life, in the name of science. SCIENTISTS have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.
US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years.
Pittsburgh's Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject's veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution.
The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity.
But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.
Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.
However rather than sending people to sleep for years, then bringing them back to life to benefit from medical advances, the boffins would be happy to keep people in this state for just a few hours,
But even this should be enough to save lives such as battlefield casualties and victims of stabbings or gunshot wounds, who have suffered huge blood loss.
During the procedure blood is replaced with saline solution at a few degrees above zero. The dogs' body temperature drops to only 7C, compared with the usual 37C, inducing a state of hypothermia before death.
Although the animals are clinically dead, their tissues and organs are perfectly preserved.
Damaged blood vessels and tissues can then be repaired via surgery. The dogs are brought back to life by returning the blood to their bodies, giving them 100 per cent oxygen and applying electric shocks to restart their hearts.
Tests show they are perfectly normal, with no brain damage.
"The results are stunning. I think in 10 years we will be able to prevent death in a certain segment of those using this technology," said one US battlefield doctor.

I was talking about this with some people and they told me that a story about this was on 20/20 (or some show like that) about 5 or 6 yrs ago.
thank you for this thread... i have a new rearch line......regards Pharaoh
look into books by the writer Wade Davis
he wrote serpent and the rainbow....
he is an anthropologist who studies pharmacological researches
the drug in question is a mixture of Datura(a relative of potatoes, and also what makes poison arrow frogs poisonous) Blowfish toxins, and various other herbs
but those are the two main poisons
in the right dosages you appear dead to all but a brain scan.....your heart beats at less than 1 beat per minute, respiration is so low it is unrecognizable, and you are in an intensely deep and unresposive coma state....
after you are dug up you are exposed to druggings...beatings..and torture till you are a brainwashed slave....

this is the quick google link....
have fun kids....
Intruiging... I'd like to visit this land of the dead some day...
I came across it while doing some research but didn't think of it much at the time....Thanks for the link
i have known that zombies existed, i heard about that some time back and also decided to do some research on it. i wasnt surprised to find out that it was true, because come on people, mostly everything that is now adays thought to be myth and legend are actually true, society has just forgoten it
Thats frekin' awsome! Thx for shareing...
Finally us women know how to have the perfect boyfriend ;)
yack...really boring imagination...=)
I cant believe it is possible.....
Really great and interesting thread Darkness!
I've heard lots on this subject before it doesn't only happen in haiti it's spread through alot of small islands in the pacific It's nearly always a voodoo thing.
I've known some people that were zombies in bed.. yeesh.
they are not real zombies but are given a mixture that incluces part of pufferfish that paralize you and make you apear daad and when it wares off they awaken the customs there don't alow the bodys to be imbomed and thus they apear to come back from the dead. If I'm wrong about any of this feel free to correct me
Either way, they're still a zombie. lol And I still want one.
there's a movie called A Serpent and The Rainbow that is about the ombie powder. it's actually kinda creepy to watch
in case you haven't read this thread, that movie/book has been mentioned about a dozen times now.
yeah I know that they are real thats why there is the FVZA also known as slayers.
slayers huh...too bad killing one would simply be murder.....as they never actually died..
Yeah i was told stories about people who have died and have been seen in different towns or countries from where they are from. All because of Vodo or a path with the devil but i dont know if i believe this.
watch Wes Cravens Serpant and the Rainbow...that explains everything you want to know about zombism in Haiti ...it is based on a true story
eww i agree a Zombie in bed is kind of crazy and nasty ..lol eww :)
and for those who will never read the first hundred posts here....
the book is by wade davis....
google the name and you will get all kinds of info
wow... umm that is kinda fascinating but then again kinda fucked up how they are messing with karma and shit... frankly these people can stay dead... its less slow drivers and people to stand in line behind... plus millions are born each day (damnit)
whoa.. i never tought they were real, but i thought something might have at least came close but im wrong. now.. they'll pr0ove vampires and everything (sorry if they already have lol) but.. sorta pr0oves like anything that people think could b real.. usually is in the long run..
From,
Wink
Thats freaking crazy! I didnt think anyone would be smart enough to do something like that.
Good job on the research. It was a nice read.
I dont know that sounds like a litte Serpant and the Rainbow. But hey I wouldnt put it past those of Voodoo religious orders to be that arrogant to not let thier dead be.
THAT IS SOO COOL!!! Now I wanna go see... Just to be able to say I saw one.. Heh zombies.. THEY WILL EAT YOU ALIVE!!! **thinks** alright that didn't sound right.. **sighs** Bad Phebe.. **smacks her hand**
Yet aother reason I am thankful to be an American. LOL
By the way, I cannot tell you how many, many times I was poised to be deployer in Haiti while I was a Paratrooper. It is a very messed up place.
In which era where you posted there?! I'm asking because there was was so much political upheavel there... very messed up as you said..
U'm not all into the zombie type stuff and I believe people are making this crap up to see if it sales or for wahtever reasons. i dont believe in voodoo or anything like that at all.
ummm candykitten03....did you actually read the thread....
serpent and the rainbow was mentioned many times.....and more to the point the fact it was based on a true story...and was written by the guy the story happened to...his name is Wade Davis....
he is an anthropologist medical researcher
he also has made numerous studies into the zombie phenomina.....this is all a repeat of what has already been said here....
this isn't new news to me. that's why i don't mess with haitians . . . anymore!
i'm just kidding guys
but seriously, there's a story about zombies and why haiti is in the condition that it's in now becasue of a curse that the former leader put on the country if they overthrew his son from power after they had to wait 5 years for the son to come into power theyhad to wait 5 years because the former leader died and his zombie ruled the country until the son was ready
guys i'm sorry if what i just typed didn't make any sence, but i'll do some research and get back to you on the specifics
they sure do..I read a book called the Serpent and the Rainbow..that dealt with them
mmm zombies. i'd like to meet one. thats a pretty interesting article
maybe thats why american soldiers are not alowed in haiti.
T.V. and books [any media] had always made it hard to believe. Maybe some will start believing in real vampires. ;)
Interesting..... Now I think I have heard it all... I knew that they had to be real, but I've never meet one and I never really read up on it...
Great topic...
This is a most interesting topic. I will have to do some of my own research and I will then reply with a better answer. I will start with the links people have on here and then go from there. Thanks for the interesting topic.
its old news but great reading, but they are not 100% dead its more like a dreamlike state before dead comes, a littlte like chickens when you chup ther head of, they "live" for a few minutes, its the nerves and organs they hold alive in this zombielike state. before the body and mind actually finds out that its dead.
I have an idea...
anyone willing to donatethemselves to science??? Anyone willing to become a zombie???
ARE THERE ANY TAKERS IN THE HOUSE WILLING TO SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO EXPERIMENT?
I BELIEVE THE BLOWFISH POWDER OR W/W WILL BE THE BEST DRUG YOU EVER TASTED, AND THE LAST ONE TOO (literally muahahahaha)
whoa...that is very interesting. i dunno if i'd like it if anyone i knew got turned into a "zombie" though.....
don't worry DB,
i'll find someone to be your guinea pig
The american soldier thing is untrue. I have a friend who was in active duty and he went to hati to help there in like 1990 something. I'll ask him about his experience there. I do remember him saying that there was a lot of voodoo action down there. Like in the hospital there was a witch doctor and you were not allowed to look past the curtain while he was in there b/c of the evil spirits. I'm totally sure how the story goes but I'll ask him.
whats shocking jj?? theblackmambas guinea pig hunting or the zombies LoL
I always wondered what happened to my 8th grade science teacher.
there are a couple a pic's spread out in the net about a woman who was a zombie for 11 years...
yup.....the movie "the serpent and the rainbow" sums it up for me!!!!!!
I didnt get a chance to read the entirity of your first post but i got the gist. well i came accross this concept a few years ago it turns out in some placed real witches you special medication or potions that slow the heart beat so much that you apear dead and they bury you alive when you awake from you intoxication you would do thier bidding for you beleave you a zombie but infact you were just sleeping. its voodoo magic and it works...... allso i heard a creepy tial on the radio that was about this subject. it was about a man with a medical condition that made him apear dead. very good story he ends up getting trapped in a accident thinking he is in a coffen but he really isnt. thanks for reading....
~* please rate my profile *~
wow the living dead real? wow thats all i got to say..kindda scary tho!!! but awsome read!!!
Ive already read that but I still feel the same about it...Its interesting but cruel
Oh, man I really wished they didn't! they are about the only thing that I fear!
I know that zombies are created from a poisionous paste that was fed to them, but i've never read it in so much detail. thanks heaps for that info!
You people have been duped. The neurotoxin in question is tetrodotoxin. It acts on the central and peripheral nervous systems. The mortality rate is something like 50 percent, but usually patients recover within the first 24 hours without suffering any brain damage. The article also makes erroneous claims, like the recent invention of the CAT scan (it was invented in the early 70's). Congratulations you're all a bunch of lazy sheep.
Also, the toxin is nothing like Norcuron, which is a brand name muscle relaxant. If you think about it, why would a doctor administer a deadly neurotoxin during surgery? The article is unreasonable in addition to being incorrect on more technical fronts. Please people, turn your brains on.
This is very interesting. We have all heard of this for years, through the rumors. Have you guys seen the movie, from late 80s, The Serpent and the Rainbow? Great creepy movie about all of this. In that, is exactly as you were talking about, of the puffer fish and the powder. Check it out. ;)
And the whole of your proof exists in an article full of errors? I'll be as insolent as I like because I don't appreciate idiocy. The article was obviously bogus on a nonscientific level. The extra facts were just bonus. I would encourage everyone to look it up for themselves instead of accepting an argument even with documentation. Obviously you didn't, otherwise you wouldn't have posted such a stupid article. Why not post all of your reliable, documented information instead? Did all of their testimonials cause you to post an inaccurate article? Too many people just took it as fact, and that should righteously piss off any thinking person. I'd like everyone to get off it and do some research, but let's face it, hardly anyone will.
well do your research,
Tetra*
Tetra, common name for many species of small and often brilliantly colored aquarium fish in the characin family. Tetras are freshwater fish that are...
Toxin*
Toxin, poisonous substance produced by the metabolic activities of certain living organisms, including bacteria, insects, plants, and reptiles.
TETRATOXIN
It is the main drug causing harm to the brain. For your information, all I have posted is correct. As for your words and all your selfrighteous bullshit could be just the same as a pebble in the ocean, insignificant.
Stop accusing, and discuss. If you cannot do such a thing by being nice and tolerant, honey you best get going from this thread.
Why dont you post where you got your "information" from, maybe you can prove me wrong.
If we're going to start a discussion, you might note that the molecule in question is tetrodotoxin, not "tetratoxin".
