I was having a discussion with my history class today and somehow we came to the topic of Vampires....The teacher asked if some people would act different if they ever met a real vampire...Some said yes and some said no....Majority thought that they were foul creatures and that they would stake them if they ever got the chance to do so....IT really made me mad...But my question is how did people get the wrong impression about vampires?

Either the way that most think that vampires are just no good and rotten ~grins evily~

Or how do they think that vampires are weak and can be overthrown if they ever show their face??

like so many things we people tend to make things out to be evil or wrong.people do this when they dont understand whats before them.they say it's easyer to kill some thing you dont understand then to deal with it.there for we give them titles lie evil or there just bad and so forth but thats just my opion

it is the media that makes them out one way or another and people follow that picture like sheeps!!!!!

That's why I shut my mouth where vampires are discussed in real life.I feel very angry inside and want to shout at their ignorance,but I better keep myself calm!

Not everyone is ready to know the truth.Not everyone is open-minded enough,it's the brutal truth,what you have to care of,that you know what's true and what's fake.

People hear things from other people, and are usually misguided from the real truth. That's what my school was like...the problem is that no one has the true honest facts down straight.

most little kiddies know about vampires through the old stories... dracula for example and nowadays through movies...

i think the public at large is generally misinformed about many things, not just vampires, but we have movies, and books, and yes even myths and legends to thank for the hideous mask that has been put on Vampire kind. I also think that there are too few of us to be able to change the narrowmindedness of the general population... perhaps one day that will change...until then it is a sad society we live in where ignorance is considered bliss.

Hollywood has brought upon the cloak and dagger element.. the black tux, the hair, the skin...

Famous books brought across the romantic element. The saddened vampire, lost for eternity, seeking his place.

History and people's conceptions of the times brought on the undead mass of zombie like evil ...

I heard is also from the bible that they get the wrong impression. Though I think there are different types of bibles. I don't know. I don't read the bible.

But if anything I wouldn't mind meeting a vampire and talking to him/her. Just as long I don't get bitten by one. Then I would be pissed.

mujst agree.. well as time passed by everyone started building notions..about what vampires are and where they came about... all of the reasons may be true.. but they have been seen by society as being wierd and bizzare...maybe cause the anemic persons in the past looked very pale..they were seen different by society and as we all have noticed towards..these years..difference frightened society... so these * wierd people* (including witches) were just pushed apart from society and were considered as bad,...and dark..

I like meeting new people. Labeling vampires as Good or Evil or holy or unholy would be the same as saying a person is differnt because the color of their skin or the creed they believe.

People are people, no matter their ilk. And I would welcome the opportunity to meet a real vampire, as I would welcome the opportunity to meet any new person with a differnt perspective then my own.

You can't blmes movies for the actions of someone when they kill ,they say...that movie or that game made me do it.What about the 1000's of others that watched or played ...they never had those thoughts.

we are portrayed in what one could consider a very narrow light. The public perception of us is that we all are fairly rich and live in expansive castles where we sleep in our coffins until nightfall, when we go out and feast upon the living!

Another perception of us is from a more modern look- we all wear leather and we all are basically white people (which is untrue; vampirism can affect anyone of any race or ethnicity; its a universal thing that could even apply to animals if an animal managed to 'catch' vampirism)


In reality however, we vampires can look like anybody. Some of us, (including myself) may wear leather and wear black or listen to alternative music or whatever you can possibly throw at us, but really, we could be your grocer, your neighbour, your school teacher, even your significant other may be one of us (atleast they may have some strain of vampirism; different for each vampire)

people have issues wiht anything different than themselves.. not just vamps. I have been treated oddly my whole life. I went to see AC/DC and Rod Stewart all in the same year. I love old Black Sabbath and the Monkees. I can't be put in a box so people either laugh with me or at me. Only thing is I really don't care what they think anymore so if they don't like me.. let em. the people with the most kindness and virtue may not always be considered "normal" or "hip" but it truly is their loss, as the people whom you'd least expect to extend the branch of friendship and understanding may dress alternatively, think alternatively, and with us vampires specifically, be an alternative state of life, or unlife, depending how you look at it.

and the thing about steretyping is that it's based on what you normally get when you see something... So becaue bad news makes better headlines, everyone knows the worst case senario..

this isn't very difficult.... look at the common media.... most fiction shows/portrays vampires as being killers, hunters and evil doers.... even vampires like Lestat are portrayed badly... unless obiously you've read the whole thing... and then you know that evena vampire can change! But still people who just reach the surface... get the face value of the situation.... reaching the bottomline that vampires are bad! People who talk well about them well... are the ones that know better.

Think about it this way, have you ever known a vampire as portrayed by the media as being good? Most people don't even believe that they exist... because they expect to meet what the media presents... at the end of the day the media is what is F**king us up the A**e

I think that when people are in public and the subject of vampires comes up, people tend to just agree with what the majority agrees is right and sane. Like most people (people obviousy not on this site) think that vampires are hideous creatures of the night that kill and have no heart, and are just pure evil. *smirks* Ok, well I like the evil part, but anyway! They don't know the truth about vampires and what they are ACTUALLY like, they just judge on what the majority THINKS is right. which is actually wrong. I really wish I was at your school when you were having that discussion in your history class because that would have been interesting to hear what other people had to say about vampires, especially more people like us. I for one am not going to go around saying I believe in vampires and that they are awesome and I want to drink blood and whatever else I think. But, I'm also not going to just agree with the majority of ignorant people out there that just don't know any better. I agree that people pick up their perceptions of what is and isn't by what they read and hear through the media, of all types, not just books and movies. Unfortunately, not only does it give rise to the negative perceptions that you discussed, but it gives the wrong positive impression to people who think that being vampiric is equal to being rich, beautiful, forever young etc. The fact of the matter is that history is rarely written by the people who were actually there, but by people who wish they had been. The only person who knows the truth is the one who WAS there, and they rarely talk.

The reason the Vampires are given a " bad rap" is because books and movies make them out to be demonic creatures of the night bent on sucking human mortals dry of every last drop of blood... For most, myself included, this is simple not true.. There are the occasional few that asct the way these books and movie potray them but for others like myself we would not harm a souls and just want to carry on our lives as though nothing had changed.

True, true...Although, When I asked someone about vampires and what they thought about them and where they got their impressions from....I was answered with this...

The unnamed also stated that where he got his feelings on vampires is from books...And he also agrees that in movies, they do tend to make things up and profile Vampires in an evil catagory, because really, nobody knows what they are about and do not know what they are capable of.........

People make assumptions, it is a necissary part of life, and unfortunitly they place bad assumptions upon people without the knowledge of what or who they reallt are. I am sorry you had such a bad experience.

Well the myth of vampires arose from a man in transylvania, or someplace like that, might have been romania, but anyways. This man was attributed to leading countless virgins to their death. he would lull some innocent girl to his abode whence he would brutalize them, toss them on this bleeding table, where he would cut the wrists and the back of the ankles so they would bleed to death, the blood pooling in vessels wich he would usually have a glass of their blood before taking them outside and placing his victims on a tall stake in the air where the vultures and carrion eaters would feast upon their bloodless bodies. It was after the town had had enough that they went to his house and stacked him on one of his own stakes and left him. Thus the idea of stakes through the heart was the only way to kill a vampire. But it was because of this "vampire" the one true and pure blood, as is soi said in hollywood, that this evil has been spurned, that all vampires deserve a wicked and untimely demise

all i can say on this subject is people are going to think what they are going to think. no one else can make a person see what they dont want to see

that reminds me of the "Questions of the Universe" class that I took last year. It seemed in that class every topic was fair game- the "school rules" didn't really seem to apply. We talked about sex, suicide, love, controversial marriage situations, rape, ALL sides of all the issues. We had really religious people, realists, pessimists, ...... people with all sorts of different belief systems. When we discussed these things I was always an active participant. Vampirism is a really touchy thing, and I wish someone would have brought it up (me or a friend of mine would have most likely)- but my teacher didn't seem to like that prospect. We were supposed to write an essay on something we researched throughout history in his History class (I had him for both classes) and he wouldn't allow me to do research on vampires for it. The only reason I could imagine why he wouldn't is that with vampires, it's not all hard facts.... but that topic would have been a lot of fun discussing.

and who would really care then. Good point. But what about in ancient times when people had the disease to feast on blood and an eye condition to where it hurt to be in the sun. Wouldn't it be feasable that in those times they were ridiculed if not hunted for being vampires and if so...wouldn't that account for certain "vampires" to be forced to kill and attack lets say a villager because there was no understanding towards medical conditions back then. Or maybe they are real and were such extreme killers that they were hunted and went into hiding only to be seen in the shadows taking victims in the night?

I'm glad you brought this up. But in my opinion, the fact that they were persecuted and needed to take extreme measures to survive, would not mean that vampires have any supernatural powers. In fact, most characteristics of vampires are weaknesses.

Or, maybe over time, the medical condition that classifies a vampire, has become less severe over ages. But as far as I know vampirism cannot be passed on to a child. So it wouldnt have to do with heredity.

In addition to media perceptions - people are also going to tend to have their perception impacted by social and religious groups as well. If you're taught that something is the work of "the devil" - you're not going to have a high opinion of it.

Which is why I strive so much to not be ignorant, hahaha....I've actually done my fair share of educating these types of blindly led people.

i think its basically down to ignorance. and by the way...movies and "fictional" books are the only ones to portray vampires as beautiful,romantic,and enchanting creatures with souls.Historic accounts of vampires recall them as babysnatchers, killers of whores and drunkards in alleyways...but I guess thats part of their "beauty" now isn't it

i think the whole reason is because of the whole story about dracula. 2 years ago we talked about it in my history class and he told us all the vampire stuff was based on a guy in romania who was rich and would like stick rods up people asses and it would go out their throats and all this other crap.... and he wore a cape and black blah blah and his name was something like dracula....thats what i think

i think that humans just grew jealous of the vampiric power and so thought them evil

and that would be my opinion in which you dont know the full story behind. you making comments on what others say is more of the example of arrogance. i'm not talking of the actions of a vampire showing the beauty. i'm talking about the being within whom deals with the certain things on a daily basis. and for you not knowing experiences a person has had and their reasoning therefor dont prejudge somebody by one opinion they hold.

and. back to the beauty. depending on whom you are as a person your opinion on beauty and death is completely different than others. i welcome it and look for the beauty in which it posesses. others do not it all depends on your way of thinking and how you wish to live your life. we live to die as i think.books about vampires such as written by anne rice only give those who dont really want to learn the truth of the creatures a story line to believe in. then there are others who look into the history. and see what they have done in the past.

I believe that makign comments in response to what another individual says is the concept of a thread, OneFinalGravenResponse. Differences of opinion are not uncommon, you know. Maybe he was a little rude in his response, but you needn't be so defensive.

I understand both your points, and albeit miscontrued at times, they are both right.
