"Who is the wise person? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a person's face and changes its hard appearance." ~Ecclesiastes 8:1
PRINCIPLES OF DISCUSSION ETIQUETTE:
1. Assume good faith. People come here to collaborate and write informative and lively discussions.
2. Treat others as you would have them treat you.
Be polite, please!
3. People can't see you or know for sure your mood.
Irony isn't always obvious, and blunt, raw text can easily appear rude.
Be careful of the words you choose —
what you intended might not be what others perceive, a
nd what you read might not be as intended.
4. Work toward agreement.
5. Argue facts, not personalities.
6. Don't ignore questions.
7. If another disagrees with the content of your thread,
provide good reasons why you think it's appropriate.
8. Concede a point, when you have no response to it;
or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste.
9. Don't make people debate positions you don't really hold.
10. Be civil.
11. Although it's understandably difficult in a heated argument,
if the other party is not as civil as you'd like them to be,
make sure to be more civil than him or her, not less.
That way at least you're not spiralling down to open conflict
and name-calling by your own accord, you're actively doing something about it:
taking a hit and refraining from hitting back -
everybody appreciates that (or at least they should).
However, don't hesitate to let the other party know that you're not comfortable with their tone in a neutral way -- otherwise they might think you're too dense to understand their "subtlety", and you'll involuntarily encourage them (e.g. "I know you've been sarcastic above, but I don't think that's helping us resolve the issue. However, I don't think your argument stands because...").
12. Be prepared to apologize.
In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so.
Forgive and forget.
13. Recognize your own biases and keep them in check.
14. Give praise when due. Everybody likes to feel appreciated, especially in an environment that often requires compromise. Drop a friendly note on their personal message box or email.
15. Remove or summarize resolved disputes that you initiated.
16. Help mediate disagreements between others.
17. If you're arguing, take a break; if you're mediating, recommend a break.
***IMPORTANT***
Most people take pride in their work and in their point of view. Egos can easily get hurt in discussions or debates, but a forum is not a place for striking back. They're a good place to comfort or undo damage to egos, but most of all they're for instilling knowledge and forging agreements that are best for the entire community.
Remind yourself that these are people you're dealing with.
They are individuals with feelings and probably have other people in the world who love them. Try to allow dignity to others.

Dearest DomAngelus- you are rock and roll inspiration.
Great post- great advice.
I hope those that do not follow this kind of tact and diplomacy will breath it in and retain it's buzz.
This is a wonderful post and adresses the issue of peopel leaving thier stamps on things like member articles no one wants a comment that says please rate back nice profile on an article it took time to write.
A wonderful set of guidelines for defending ones' position, in an argument, like an adult. The most difficult part of any discussion is admitting defeat but it is a necessary part of an intelligent exchange.
Very well written. I so agree with you.
When a person has a problem with someone else & expresses it in a forum thread it subjects every single person here to it.
Be the better person & handle it as an adult. :)
ya well I hate you all..you bunch of pooheads..
this...is a monkey being somewhat sarcastic...
but really....damn good advice...bravo
EXACTLY!!!! Thank you hun. I wrote just about the same thing almost a week ago just different and i believe it was deleted. Not gonna get into it.. but anyhow... Thank you for posting this. I believe in forum etiquette.. one thing that should be mentioned also is it would be awesome if people would be more understanding to the content of their posts also due to the minors on the site. And if posting articles make sure proper credit is given so as not to plagerize any one else's material. Unless it if your own research of course. I just think it is very proper to do so.
Nice, quite nice. I will try to stay on that path, but get rabid sometimes. :)
- D
Very well said unfortunately not everyone is going to follow that,it's something that will never stop.
I like discussions cause I like to hear and learn from others' opinions unfortunately most of the time they get transformed into Jerry Springer show.
Very well put I do hope people can follow these guidelines on the site.
Wow this should be hung up on the forum wall for all to read before they enter. Well said, you have a keen insight my friend.
Very nicely done. I can only hope everyone reads this before their next post. I try to avoid heated arguments whenever possible. And I certainly try to treat others respectfully.
I am pleased that this thread is getting such a good response. Jason, thank you for the additional tips.
I am very aware that some will never follow any proper forum etiquette. My desire is that enough people will apply them and counter much of the mindless drivel that infects a lot of threads.
In addition, those mature and intelligent people that do follow similar etiquette guidelines should become and are a driving force in moderating threads and postings.
Thank you everyone! ;)
I live in false hopes that people can apply the points you raised Dominic in their forum postings! However, a public forum is not the place for private teachings, nor seeking advise to medical/physiological problems.. so dont forget the use of your journals for information regarding those subjects like DomAngelus already practises people!
Also if the faqs are applied into your forum posts there should never be any reason for confrontation and disagreement with any of the Admin team here :)
Nice thread Dom. Thank you for posting it now if only people would follow the rules of netiquette lol
I back Em up in what she says to and Jason as well. His url was chock full of info to!
I think that respect is something earned, but etiquette should be something that is used on everyone. Remain polite to everyone whether you respect them or not, until theyy give you a reason to not be polite.
I enjoyed your post. Thank you for the outline :-). I agree people have to realize that not everyone knows how they mean to word or phrase something. That it could possibly appear offensive or rude. I always have to remind myself of that LOL.
no matter how many rules you post, no matter how much you stress for people to be respectful..your always going to have poop heads who wont even follow a simple respect rule.
the best way to handle them is to just ignore them and make sure that you dont follow in the ir footsteps..
if they become to much of a dung beetle..they will be taken care of by the proper people
that is a good wake up call to all who know, dont know , or want to know... really informitive..
I so agree, well said. It's too bad so many people choose to forget the fact that they are dealing with people.
Good wake up call.
way to go.......real deep. keep it up, it was real cool
very good advice and hopefully well heard by all in the rave..
thank you for the guidance that is much needed... this is surely to wake up some people in the rave...
I agree that there will always be those who choose to either ignore etiquette or refuse to learn it. But I believe that those who do apply these and similar guidelines can take an active role in moderating the direction and spirit of a discussion. Like the old saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." ;)
i agree with your princibles, i am an easy going guy and i follow those respectable princibles in everyday life
I really think that this should be passed around not only in forums, but on discussion email lists as well. I can't tell you how many times I've had to unsub from such groups because it stopped being about discussion and just turned into a giant flame war.
Great advice on soo many levels! Not to mention it works with any conversation, not just on here.
Good advice, good etiquette. However, personally, I could've done without the religious sentiment. But that's just me. No offence meant to anyone, it's just my personal feelings.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. :)
That kind of reminds me of that song...
Religious sentiment was not the intention, but rather the wisdom in the particular verse I chose to use. I may not always agree with many of the beliefs or philosophies found within the VR, but I have learned to appreciate the wisdom that can be gleaned from each perspective. I am glad that theis thread has been seen as a positive one.
My goals are always to enrich the lives of those that I am fortunate enough to come across....whether I can affect someone in a small or large way. Thank you for your comments. ;)
Great thread. Wish more people would act it out.
Sometimes, when i ask a question within another thread, cause im not familiar with the topic then it happened often enough that i get ignored. Im here to learn about differnt things and to deepn the knowledge i have. Someone cant learn if nobody takes their time to answer the questions.
KAT.....I want you to know that you can ask anything of me. I am always willing to help anyone on their particular path. If you ever need information on any topic, you may address me directly in a private message. ;)
Excellent advice and very well written.
Thanks for the post.
Yes, obviously good content. Well thought out- However, as a believer in free speech, and since we are on line and not gathered in person, I believe that at times forceful comment is necessary.
If you post something- you live with it. It is open to critique. There are individual articles posted on this site, that may be rated. Areyou suggesting they are all great? Of course, they are not.
Same with Forum threads, actually a lot of forum threads. They post, comments are requested. You live with the good! You live with the bad!
I am not claiming that all perspectives or article content are right. My statement realizes that there is wisdom beyond just one set of beliefs or path. Though I hold to a set of beliefs that I find very fulfilling, I am always respectful to those who share differing views. Showing discretion and etiquette means that one is MATURE.
On the other hand there is a lot of shit floating around here! ;)
I agree with DarkAdmin.
Very nice to see this post as well, outlining some etiguette is always good when you get large groups of people together to discuss things.
So well put domangelus, I wouldn't change a letter, idealistic but hopefully the way we should work collectively. such a good point on your disclaimer, reflects all I've been stressing through many threads all along, so very well put that I shall take the liberty to repeat it here
***IMPORTANT***

If this principle had to be followed, all sort of topic could be put in discussion no matter how 'hot' or difficult they might be. Thumbs up Domangelus, Good work.
I have to say that I am overwhelmed with the response to this thread. Each and every comment has been read carefully and are very much appreciated. Yes, it may be a bit idealistic in nature, but with that said, I believe that there are enough people on the VR that will use such etiquette to create and/or direct healthy discussions on the forums. My hats off to the many who are already promoting sincere understanding, open-mindness and maturity.
their is a saying that with great power comes even greater responsibility it is my opinion that with great wisdom comes the one truith that we actually know nothing
wrapped within the nothing that i know i see a wise man sharing his personal beliefs on how to make a comunity stronger and i salute you
domangelus, thanks very much and i will take you up on the offer. get ready for a flood of questions, when you least expect it lol
Twilightsguardian...I am humbled by your comments. Thank you.
KAT...I look forward to helping you in any way I can. Bring them on, Darling!!! LOL
One day Brer Dom went to work and got him some ethics, and mixed it with some high-soundin' words, and fixed up a contraption called a Tar-Baby, and he took the Tar-Baby and he sat her in the big forum box, and then he lay off in the bushes for to see what the news was going to be. And he didn't have to wait long, neither, because by me by here comes Brer miz pacing down the forumlippity-clippity, clippity-lippityjust as sassy as a jay-bird. Brer Dom, he lay low. Brer miz came prancing along until he spied the Tar-Baby, and then he fetched up on his behind legs like he was astonished. The Tar-Baby, she sat there, she did, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
Morning! says Brer miz, says henice weather this mornin', says he.
Tar-Baby she says, Assume good faith, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
How does you sym'toms seem to prosper? says Brer miz, says he.
Brer Dom, he lay low, and the Tar-Baby, she says, Be polite please!
How you come on, then? Are you deaf? says Brer miz, says he. Because if you are, I can holler louder, says he.
Tar-Baby says, Be thoughtful, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
You're stuck up, that's what you are, says Brer miz, says he, and I'm going to cure you, that's what I'm a-going to do, says he.
Brer Dom, he sort of chuckled, he did, and Tar-Baby, she says, Work towards agreement.
I'm going to learn you how to talk to respectable folks if it's the last act, says Brer miz, says he. If you don't stop quoting rules at me, I'm going to bust you wide open, says he.
Tar-Baby, she says, Do not get personal, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
Brer miz kept on asking her, and the Tar-Baby, she kept on spewing forum etiquette, until presently Brer miz drew back with his fist, he did, and blip he took her upside her head. His fist stuck, and he couldn't pull loose. The ethics and rules held him. But Tar-Baby, she says, Don't ignore questions, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
If you don't lemme loose, I'll knock you again, says Brer miz, says he, and with that he fetched her a wipe with the other hand, and that stuck. Tar-Baby, she says Explain your content, and Brer Dom, he lay low.
Turn me loose, before I kick the natural stuffing out of you, says Brer miz, says he, but the Tar-Baby, she says, Concede the point when you have no response. Brer miz lost the use of his feet tangled in the rules and ethics, and Brer Dom, he lay low. Then Brer miz squalled out that if Tar-Baby doesn't turn him loose he'll butt her crank-sided. And then he butted, and his head got stuck. Then Brer Dom, he sauntered forth, looking just as innocent as one your mammy's mockin' birds.
Howdy, Brer miz, says Brer Dom, says he. You look sort of stuck up this morning, says he, and he laughed and he laughed, and then he rolled Brer miz into the thread for dumb asses.
I always Loved the stories by
"Uncle Mizery."
*Very nice touch*
Thank you, My Lord domangelus. You are indeed a wise man and wonderful teacher. Thank you again for everything.
This thread is just the example of what I found so compelling on this site to want to be becom a part of.
Great post. Wish everyone would follow that.
domangelus, I may just take you up on your offer of assistance in the future. May I add you to friends list?
I would be delighted to be included on your Friends List. I shall do the same to you. I look forward to chatting with you very soon. Again, I extend my hand to anyone who wishes to communicate with me. I am always hoping to make new friends. ;)
...those are indeed wise words if ive ever heard any...
...not hard to follow either...
I just read the rest of the responses and had a thought. Its actually a little sad, that it needs a thread like that to show some people how it would appropriate to treat people. Isn't that something we should just do naturally and not would have to learn first?
Wonderful thread! I can't say that I follow them all the time, but I couldn't agree more. We should all learn to respect others points of view, even if we don't agree with them. My ego has been hurt before and I know that I've hurt others. The point is that I will try to better my actions and use these guidelines whenever I can. Thank you for making them easily understood and putting them to light.
NomadHunter and many like him are the reasons why I post such threads. It just takes a little nudge from time to time in order to help people get a glimpse of the bigger picture. I learned from the advice and direction of others, so I in turn honor them by passing on their wisdom to you. I believe, that our community will be the better for it.
^^V^^
Really liked your post it has real merit and can be applied to any area if people think about it. Thank you for putting it down as you did I am planning to return to this one often.
I also agree with Kat about people not wanting to help when you ask a question so they just ignore you or else they figure you should know it's been asked already when you might never have been told.
I have come across that alot not just at Rave but thankfully I have a person here who I can ask things of and no matter how often I come to them they never shut me out or at least they haven't yet.
Thanks again for your post.
this is the best thread ive seen on here
thank you for the insite i too am one that from time to time needs just a little nudge
not to sound like a dumb redneck or anything but i realy didnt understand that persons story ..... id appreceate it if some one could explain it to me
but any how thank you and ill try my best to always treat each and every one with respect for now on
These are very encouraging comments......and rednecks are cool!!! ;)
An extra tip that I find very useful...
If things get out of hand in a thread, don't make everyone else scroll through it. If things get to this stage, then request to discuss this further in private messaging, rather than ruining a thread/ airing your dirty laundrey.
*APPLAUSE*....Wow.....I really would love to see more people follow your suggestions, not only on here, but in the real world as well....
People take others far too seriously, sometimes that iggy button is a wonderful invention. Politeness is overated when you are dealing with some characters. I think hitting the iggy is the most polite thing to do.Fortunately here I am in great company ! Not a big neccessity like on other public sites that have tons of trolls.
I think the article is a great contribution and makes people think about how nice it is to be here! Thanks for it.
Very nicely constructed Domangelus!!! If the world lived by such virtues there would be no problems in it... Bravo!!
great post....I hope that all can or at least one...try to follow the advice given...thanx
I definitely wish I had read something like this my first week here. My first forum post, I got pounced on because I was using a bit of sarcasm and wit that was clearly obvious to me, but was easily missed in a hurried reading. Not the best way to make new friends.
Provided is a very useful website dedicated to the subject of "NETTIQUETTE"
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/
^^V^^
*Excerpt From www.spitting-image.com*
"Flaming and Slamming
"Flaming" is insulting another user's post, opinions, subject, grammar, or pretty much anything else, in an attempt to pick an online fight. "Slamming" is making offensive, condescending, or insulting comments about a user, an idea, an event, etc. in order to pick an online fight.
Please note that there is a large difference between expressing an opinion and flaming. A differing opinion would say, "I have to disagree with you, Mike, since I've been to Australia and it was quite warm that spring," whereas a flame would say, "You're dead wrong, Mike, and you've obviously never been to Australia. And, by the way, you can't spell worth beans."
There is an equally massive gap between expressing a concern about an idea or event and slamming it. A legitimate concern or complaint about an event would say, "I dislike the dates chosen for the picnic because they conflict with the Westminster Cheese Festival." whereas a slam would say, "The picnic is a waste - again!" Flaming and slamming is petty and childish. Don't do it. "
It was very good that some one posted rules here like this.. .although I have not had problems here I have in other fourm sites and I think that It is very good to see so many people posting positivly
I am pleased that you and others have found this thread helpful. ;)
I most certainly agree with your principles, they are excellent and indeed wise when follow, I try too do so, I must say I'm not perfect, but I try
The effort is the first step......Thank you for your nice comments. ;)
True politeness is the spirit of benevolence showing itself in a refined way. It is the expression of good-will and kindness. It promotes both beauty in the man who possesses it, and happiness in those who are about him. ~Beecher~
If one hears something said about them second hand news..best thing to do is bring the two parties together and confront them together. So there is no misunderstanding..Great post btw.
greatr post, its seems it might help quite a few people out, but i dont kno, it will help me though
Dom,
Always the teacher, As I shall always be your student and friend.
Great post! A discussion should always remain that! Once it turns into a debate, take it outside!*wink*
Debate is also a healthy activity when the parties involved stick to the subject matter. It dissolves when the attention turns from the topic and towards personal attacks.
I like seeing what others have written in this thread and follwing it. Dom, you are very wise.
there are alot of people who really need to read this. ; )
Indeed, there are many who might benefit from such strong advice.
