After the Vietnam War over 100,000 ethnic Hmong-a tribal people from the hills of Laos- moved to the USA. The Hmong had been recruited by the CIA during the war. In 1977 Hmong men in the USA began to die for no apparent reason. They were all healthy young men, living in modern cities. None of them showed any signs of trauma or illness. The deaths began to spread and they baffled doctors. These deaths were named SUNDS, sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome. The deaths climbed alarmingly from 1977 to 1981.
Some Hmong immigrants told of feeling an evil presence in their bedroom at night as well as a feeling of paralysis. Up to 75 % of Hmoug in the US said they had felt these things. Delving into Hmong folklore stories of a vampire called the Dab tsog (pronounced da cho) were unearthed. The Dab tsog was said to live underground and rise up at night to feed on the living by sucking the life from them whilst sitting on their chest. Back in Laos the monsters were held at bay by ancestral spirits. The ancestor spirits ere fed and given offerings by shaman in return they kept the evil spirits away. Most of the men who immigrated to the US were young. The shamanistic practices were conducted by older men, usually the head of the family.
When older men well versed in the rituals were brought over to join their families the cases of SUNDS dropped off and is now virtually unknown.

In Newfoundland we have something like that but it's called the Hag. Same theory except it's an evil witch sending his/her spirit to the sleeping person and draining their energy. Perhaps there was a racist Hag somewhere?

I am glad you found another website out there that references this. I searched far and wide mostly to no avail on this subject. I did find a little... More proof that Vampires and parallels have been found in the folklore of every civilization, every culture, every religion- always.

It's amazing how legends from across the earth will affect those who are still young. Those who at first didn't believe in what their ancestors told them through centuries, and droves of shamans from their native lands to ward everything off to make their new lives, well, liveable.

I have actually done a lot of research on sleep paralysis and it is more common than people think. I have researched it because I suffer from it occasionally and it is a terrifying experience. Anyone who has been through it will tell you it is horrifying and an evil presence is always felt. Some people feel floating, some sinking, some have something sit on their chest and grab their throats, some see faces around them, hear noises or sense an evil presence, there are different experiences for everyone. I myself have felt several of those. Each culture calls it something different though. Anyone else been through it like I have? Just curious!...

Succubi?

Succubus-
1.A female demon supposed to descend upon and have sexual intercourse with a man while he sleeps.
2.An evil spirit; a demon.

If you go by definition #2, I guess you could call it a succubus, but my question would be.. why death and not just the feeling of sex or the feelings of having had sex? Its death..

imagesinwords- I was actually researching the Hmong word for vampire- and came across the article. Of course the website is about Urban Legends as a whole, but in my mind, there's always some truth in those legends. As well as its quite believable.. the history lesson it listed, as well as the facts that a lot of the first onslaught on Hmong refugees were the younger Hmong men (the soldiers.) Many of the older men and women old enough to skilled in shamanism, followed afterwards.. so it is quite possible something like this happened. (I would ask my mother, but this topic freaks her out unfortunately, so I won't)

Narakyndryn- thanks for that response.. I can't claim anything in this case.. but I do know that a lot of the younger men who initially came to the states, were never trained in shamanism, etc. From as young as 8 or 9, some of them have been fighting in the war.. so the opportunity to learn the traditions were not available to them.

Demagorgon- the literal translation for "Dab tsog" is-

Dab- n. A demon, spirit, ghost (living dead).

Tsog- n. A bad spirit that lies on top of a sleeping person which causes shortness of breath, and an inability to wake up or get up.

I believe that this is a very good thread that you were able to uncover. I also would have to say something about the Succubus. From my knowledge of the Succubus they were sent to seduce men and then drag their souls down to the burning depths of hell. To me it makes sense that a succubus was stealing the peoples soul and thats why all the people would deie so fast with no explainable reasoning to the death

Morphinedream - I have herd of this "hag" also, a study was done on this not long ago for people who suffer sleep disorders and sleep paralysis. Apparently a large number of people have seen a hag in their room who tries to suck the life-force out of you through your mouth. Now these people have no link to each other and the story of the hag dates back a very long time.
