Was just curioys how many true Therianthropes exist in the VR community.... and I mean Therians... not "lycans" or totems... or shamans... but true Therians... are we as rare as ever?
interesting post shall look foward to its outcome.
p.s maybe you should add what a Therian is so as the greater community shall further understand your post
cheers
According to wikipedia, therianthropes are people who believe they have the soul of an animal, rather than a human. Is that basically what you're saying?
I dont know much about Therians but looking foward to learning more about it from this post
I have never heard of such. I am now intrigued, and will search out more information.
I hope you find others of your kind.
If this is what you are meaning, Wolfcry, then it would be interesting to know how many there are here on VR.
*sigh* Tells me there aren't many at all, but such is our lot.....
We do have our own communities, but we tend to be quiet and don't advertise our existence... all the would-be vamps, goth wannabes etc? We don't need that.
A Therianthrope is someone who is an animal in human form. As opposed to a shamanic person, or a totem spirit, we truly are animals.... some are mental, some are sensate (in other words shift by senses). Their is a very tiny fraction of us (which is to say infintessimal compared to the world) capable of full physical shifts....most get by with minor shifting at best, if any. It requires tremendous discipline to shift one's body structure. The rest well... you cannot fully understand until the urge comes upon you, unplanned, and you no longer think. You don't conclude, you don't... "see" you just are. Your instincts take over, your ears and nostrils become sharper....
As for finding it's definition..... PLEASE don't bother, you won't. We have made it a point to remain hidden and have ensure that fact as centuries progressed.... after all... if vampires were so "hated" in their time... what do you think they would do with us... even now? Being accused of werewolfism and the like usually were killed for witchery or satanic/demonic dealings... even if the person wasnt even such anyway.
Wow... Now that I have given a lecture, I shoulda just waited and made an article LOL
Oh... and for the record, PLEASE do not call us Lycans lol ... it is considered minorly insulting amongst our kind. Too much romanticism. *bows*
A rare breed indeed. I am sure there are some out there. No one wants to advertise who and what we are. Society for the most part isn't to kind.
and never would many of us call you Lycans...not at all for you are NOT of that, but something must different, older and real. Most people got the term 'lycan' from a movie and not what others of the kind would call themselves...
And now we understand you completely and I am most sure that there are Therians here, and they will find you.
After all, are we all not brethern of some sort?
Society is never kind and it is right to sometimes hide things from its eye. But I have never heard of anyone I know to be one. But if you say that you try to keep it a secret maybe they wouldn't say if they were just incase the risk. There is always a pair of eyes that wonder.
For those interested in therianthropy, you can find more info, here
Thank you bones... that link is very well made... Maybe sometime soon I may post an article on here from my community on our discussions on Therianthropy... though that information hits the mark well...
I've always felt closely akin to felines. Loving to be pet, lay across laps and bat at things.
However I have a strong link in the way of a Hybird (of two species) if that makes sense, with a hawk, also.
I've always een it more as a totem of sorts (being Wiccan in nature), not sure if my soul is entirely thus.
I've met very, very VERY few others even close to this feeling, and when my Second Awakening happened, it seemed more vampiric (psy) than animalistic-- though many of the tendancies are still there.
Like asking Don why he had stopped scratching my back, for example. Hee,hee-- vampy kitty scritchies. :D
Very interesting, I am discovering new things about myself. Perhaps we should talk about this together.
from the gist of your explanation of what a therian is, i have been able to do the things you mentioned for years yet still retain my senses. this is something anyone can do if their willing to try.
yet i do not consider myself one of you.
Therian kind, now there's a novel subject for this site. So much vampyre literature, history, magick, and culture, but none of it ever seems to discuss the importance of the issue that held sway once upon a time. I'm happy to see at least this thread trying to call the therian kind together at least.
Wolfcry, an article is an excellent idea! Would be great to present it when you are level to do so. This is what it is all about, knowledge, and learning from one another.
The term I had been taught was WereKinde so Therian had escaped me for a bit.
For Carlton999.... for the record , no disrespect, but if you can do 'all these things' and retain your senses.... then you are not doing them, you are using some discipline/magic/skill/mindset.... which is perfectly fine... but it isn't natural for you... nor are the instincts. For us, it is normal, not the result of some effect, but natural occurences... hence why the 'loss of senses' as you put it... but it is no loss... it is a gain. Do you lose your humanity by being vampiric? No... you become more... yes? (granted thats a debate, but for the moment allow me license for my view please)
So it is as Therian... we are animals... not pretending to be animals, and therein lies the difference *bows*
It is what seperates us from Witches, Mages, Warlocks, etc... there are those of certain Reiki disciplines that can shift their bodies... but it is a thing of the mind, not a part of their blood. It is learned, not inborn. :)
Well, I am anything you think I am.
I think I'm satan! :P
No disrespect but
I'd much rather be a human than whatever the hell your speaking of here.
LOL I do not blame you... there is much confusion amongst our own at times whether 'tis a blessing or a curse to be of us...jury is still out,... me... I live it... no more no less.
Fascinating!
It has to be asked, now we have a better definition of what a Therian is, how do you know if you are one?
I’d suspect there are a number of people on here who may know what they are, but call it by another name (the usual problem of language, after all how do you use a tool designed to explain “the food is over there” to describe emotive sensation)
I’d recommend that until your able to write a definitive article for publishing, that maybe you write something clear about your own experience, post it to yoru journal, and then let us all know when it is there. I for one would be most interested.
I have a raft of questions, but I shall take my time, draft them on a private message, and we can take it from there.
Thank you however for bringing this to a wider audience.
I whole agree that is is a very interesting subject. I have heard of therians over the years I have spent reading and learning more about the path I follow in life. Some think it is something that is within all of us some more then others. Then there are those who say it is inpacted at the moment the persons life begans. I do know that Shamans have or had a great respect for those who were completely one with thier animal brothers and sisters.
Therians seem a fascinating breed I am wondering if one can be part or only full blooded ? Is there a choice ?
I cannot claim to be a TherIan, by any means, I have always had a connection with nature and animals in general that is beyond explanation. My senses have always been very acute, smelling things stronger than others do and getting sick by it when others say there is no smell in the air. Better than normal eyesight and many other abilities that are beyond the norm, but being able to shift my shape, i dont feel that. At times i do feel like i may have been an animal in a past life as i have a feeling of walking on all 4's. I cant explain that feeling, but this is a very interesting post and i hope this forum post helps u to find others of TherIan Nature.
this year i have had the pleasure of meeting 4 therians and helping them discover what they truely are they are easily confused with lycans considering that they have animalistic features at time and they have an instinctive nature, but they are not that uncommon most of them dont know what they realy are so they supress it.(sounds impossible right) but they continue to live a normal life unknowing what was hapening in their lives.
similar to vampires they have their own "awakening" around puberty when their minds start developing, when they do start looking for answears they usualy find lycanthropy as the closest thing to their condition so if you check out lycanthropy forums or chatrooms you will usualy find a few here and there.
thats about all i know hope that helps people
I appreciate all the input and am happy to field any messages for more answers ... that being said...
I want to sress the fact that physically shifting Therians are truly rare... kinda like finding a perfect diamond vein or such... Most of us are mental or spirit shifters.... of those the spiritual ones tend to have the most confusion of their nature... and yes, frequently they call themselves weres or lycans or vice versa... think they could be therian but ARE weres... it's sorta complicated lol
However let me point out that having an affinity for animals, or nature, does NOT mean you need to be Therian or animalistic... many shamanic/pagan faiths honor or follow totemic magick, and those affinities do exist as well. It is part of why there is such confusion about what a Therian/Were really is versus what they are not.
lmao I truly have blown an entire barrel open with this one haven't I?
Like I said, I am more than happy to answer any questions posed to me via messages... but be forewarned that you may not like what you hear either lol. Part of the reason our communities are hidden is the bombardment of people who insist on verifying their world through our validation.... if you need to validate your Therian or Were nature... you quite possibly are not one. Fair warning :)
You are true about true therian communities being very well hidden.I've found one and its very well hidden. The funny thing is that there are all kinds of therians, but wolves are the ones most people think about.Me,I'm not a wolf.
Also, something that I found interesting is a lot of vamps are therian and vice versa. That would be interesting to find out is why.Somewhere the bloodlines have had to cross.Interesting though.
Well... it happens lol... it's got little to do with bloodlines... there are a thousand debates about Therian heritage and all... but there is no proven ancestry/parentage... it is individual and unbiased. From what I know of it, vampirism, in its purest form, is similar. Is it possible to cross two bloods? Yes... but it means nothing as to the offspring... at least, that is my own view.
I have a friend who may very well be a Therian, I just don't believe he has found the word for it yet...I will bring this up with him and see where it goes from there...thank you for this post! It's very helpful! :)
In taxonomy, the term refers to a member of Theria, a subclass of advanced mammals.
In anthropology and in certain psychological/spiritual subcultures, therian refers to a variety of otherkin who identify with animals or shapeshifters; a person who believes in, possesses some characteristics of, or subscribes to the spiritual or shamanic (not the folkloric) definition of Therianthropy
I know shapshifers but they conceal their powers american indans is this the same?
i've always felt more like a cat than a human, but i don't think that's what you mean. maybe you should write an article for the database about TherIans.
Enchanted... it is similar... although it's not really powers for us, but close enough.
Hunter.... feeling like a cat... it would depend in what way. Do you have affinites for cats... or is it deeper... like do you have moments where you feel as if you ARE a cat? Then you might be....
Question? You stated that there are shapeshifters which is a part of Shamanism but they would not be considered true therians? Am I correct in what you stated?
What about someone who has the features of a cat? I am talking physical features such as eyes and movements and has the bloodlust of an animal, are they considered therian? If not then what are they? I am somewhat confused by your definition and I am seeking clarification.
Fair question :)
Actually, it is fairly common among shamanic types to show physical features or minor physical reactions to shapeshifting or communing with a totemic animal...
shapeshifting is a magickal effect... where as Therian shifts are more distinct in types, and naturally occur at their own choosing at times, in fact more often than not.
However it is extremely rare for a Therian to have a SHAPEshifting link to their wereside... needless to say such would be quite uncomfortable depending on where and how it happened.
Most of this will be explained in better detail when/if my article gets approved.
I'm so glad to hear you -are- writting out the article-- I'm anxious to read it.
I caught myseld with a body pillow last night, laying on it like it was a log-- great dream, too. Then I curled up with an arm extended like I tend to and went back to sleep. :)
LOL That will happen... it took several years to adjust enough to sharing a bed with another person... needless to say THAT was a learning experience. At my age I am no longer bothered ... but once upon a time waking up in the night to chuffs, growls and snarls would bug the hell out of my g/f of the time lmao
Im that of Native Apache Nation and this seems simular to me. Thus, I am not a Therian, my powers are far and few between. Thank you WolfCry for bringing this out tho. Most dont trully know.
I am of partial Mohawk Iroquois blood myself, so I understand ....
There is a large debate about the differences of Shamanic vs Wereside shifts.
I still don't know what I am, but this hits pretty close to home. A path I shall further explore. Thanks for the wonderful article, and for bringing this discussion up in the first place.
You are very welcome! Half of the point of this thread is "awereness" and helping others either learn about themselves, or about Therian theories in general :)
I had never heard of a Therian before getting on this site. Thank you for explaining what they are. Very interesting.
So are you saying that if I purr or growl more readily than I speak, I could be a Therian?
Because I've grown up around cats to the point that some tend to call me a cat instead of a human.
Or a vampire...which is interesting, to say the least.
And I personally feel a soul-deep connection with both panthers and wolves.
I act like those animals and I identify far more readily with them than I do with the human race.
being a man at times and an animal at other times, how would i describe it?
This is a very interesting post, i shall be delighted to see its progression
A friend of mine here said i may be a therian...and this would explain the way that i behave sometimes.I have a thing for seafood and especially for sushi, i have sat and played with cat toys, i get along with animals better than i get along with most people, especially cats....but that's all just coincidence, isn't it?....I'm confused....
Wolfcry,
While not quite a therian, I do consider myself otherkin. But not a vampire. I find myself to be of a more draconic nature. As it is, I usually run more with the furry community because they tend to be a bit more accepting towards my beliefs. If you wanna chat, my AIM is BanraiSan, just tell me that you got my IM from this thread.
My significant other is an Therian, Wolf Phenotype, he belongs to VR, it seems the Therian community is more scattered than the Vampire Community, and ther seems to be less written about Therians.
Changling, no matter what your're clled. Changing from one thing to another. Another label.
I have had feelings of animal instincts before. I just tried to ignore it. I did not about this Therian thing. I have hightened senses. Sometimes I just feel like going beserk and running around on all fours. I have compressed the feelings though. I still do have the higtened senses, not much I can do about that.
Now, I have grown up around Therians...some claimed themselves to be thus, and "lycans"
And from what I have picked up, I have learned that some, from my group anyways reure to thoughs who cannot full under go a physical change a Lycan, and thoughs who can Therians..
But to me personaly I know that as close a kinship I have with you all, I myself will never be a Therian, or Lycan..or "were"...
However..there are times that I wonder...My "pack" of friends say that Im Balence....
Not a changer/shifter..but not exactly human either.
But as you mentioned earlyer Wolfcry, I have woken up to the teeth, claws, and crys...one to many times to count...I now just roll over and go back to sleep, nursing my wounds in the morning...
While I do have a bit of a 'tail' hehe (extra vertibrae) I have never been able to identify with just one animal.
As my emotions and motivations are many, there are many animals that would symbolize that.
Playful like an otter
Cautious like a marmot
Independent like a cat
Lofty and intellectual like a eagle
Curious like a young pup
Though I do identify with animals in general more than people. So while I don't believe myself to be therian, I do believe myself to have a strong brotherly connection to the animal world.
A totem animal of mine is the wolf. By nature wolfs run in packes. WHy are Therians so scattered? If the wolf nature is to pack together.
Because not all Therians are wolves.
And not every wolf's nature is to pack together. Haven't you heard of lone wolves?
Therians can be any animal, not just the wolf.
well I have never heard of that but it s most interesting.
As for wolfcry if the community chooses to remain hidden for is reasons why come to this site and advertise for them?
How does one descover they have an animal soul exactly?
Therians, as individuals, usually spend most of their time trying to figure out why they feel different. Alot of our thoughts, and traits are akin to what people say of Lycanthropes, but not quite.
For one, Lycans are humans, with a human soul. Therians are born with an animal's soul. It's quite rare to find other Therians.
Granted, one can always find those that believe they're fully physical shifters.. but finding a kindred soul.. much more difficult and time comsuming.
As stated before, we do have our own hidden communities. Even when one community disappears, we're usually able to find our kind again fairly simple. Once one realizes what they are, it's easier to find others.
