I thought this article on Yahoo online news would be of interest to many of you... I have pasted 3/4 of the long article here...I find this a most fascinating and exciting find!

By STAN LEHMAN, Associated Press Writer

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A grouping of granite blocks along a grassy Amazon hilltop may be the vestiges of a centuries-old astronomical observatory — a find archaeologists say indicates early rainforest inhabitants were more sophisticated than previously believed.

The 127 blocks, some as high as 9 feet tall, are spaced at regular intervals around the hill, like a crown 100 feet in diameter.

On the shortest day of the year — Dec. 21 — the shadow of one of the blocks disappears when the sun is directly above it.

"It is this block's alignment with the winter solstice that leads us to believe the site was once an astronomical observatory," said Mariana Petry Cabral, an archaeologist at the Amapa State Scientific and Technical Research Institute. "We may be also looking at the remnants of a sophisticated culture."

Anthropologists have long known that local indigenous populations were acute observers of the stars and sun. But the discovery of a physical structure that appears to incorporate this knowledge suggests pre-Columbian Indians in the Amazon rainforest may have been more sophisticated than previously suspected.

"Transforming this kind of knowledge into a monument; the transformation of something ephemeral into something concrete, could indicate the existence of a larger population and of a more complex social organization," Cabral said.

Cabral has been studying the site, near the village of Calcoene, just north of the equator in Amapa state in far northern Brazil, since last year. She believes it was once inhabited by the ancestors of the Palikur Indians, and while the blocks have not yet been submitted to carbon dating, she says pottery shards near the site indicate they are pre-Columbian and maybe older — as much as 2,000 years old.

Last month, archaeologists working on a hillside north of Lima, Peru, announced the discovery of the oldest astronomical observatory in the Western Hemisphere — giant stone carvings, apparently 4,200 years old, that align with sunrise and sunset on Dec. 21.

While the Incas, Mayans and Aztecs built large cities and huge rock structures, pre-Columbian Amazon societies built smaller settlements of wood and clay that quickly deteriorated in the hot, humid Amazon climate, disappearing centuries ago, archaeologists say.

Farmers and fishermen in the region around the Amazon site have long known about it, and the local press has dubbed it the "tropical Stonehenge." Archeologists got involved last year after geographers and geologists did a socio-economic survey of the area, by foot and helicopter, and noticed "the unique circular structure on top of the hill," Cabral said.

Scientists not involved in the discovery said it could prove valuable to understanding pre-Columbian societies in the Amazon.

"No one has ever described something like this before. This is an extremely novel find — a one of a kind type of thing," said Michael Heckenberger of the University of Florida's Department of Anthropology.

He said that while carbon dating and further excavation must be carried out, the find adds to a growing body of thought among archaeologists that prehistory in the Amazon region was more varied than had been believed.

Mmmmm...Thank you for this post.

I do so enjoy knowledge like this indeed. There is so much about the "old ways" that we do not know about.

Scientists still cant agree upon how such "wonders" were even built without modern equipment.

Truly amazing.

Intriguing article, it is amazing how different cultures are able to have similarities on studying the stars, seasons and the visible world around them. I would think it is difficult to find out more of the comparison of development of a culture and its advances due to missing or disintegrated evidence of tools, records, or other. This is an appreciative insight of the world we live in and those that lived before us. Thank you Darkest Desire for the mind candy

Lovely thread ty for having it here...Mikhail is now on new quest LOL find out more about this site and to see if it to is set on a ley line shamless self promotion.
Yes many socities built things to study the stars is it coincidence that they were simular to other ones already discovered. I don't believe so. I think the thoughts to build these places came at about the same time to many people. This might lead to a theory of parallelism maybe??

um, precolumbian aint that long ago, that refers to pre columbus time 1492

even today there are peeps in the amazon up stream who still don't wear clothes. Itis hardly the case to say that they were advanced and then disappeared, there just wasn't enough time to disappear.

Blocks on the ground from centuries agoi shift like tombstones in a cemetery, so any coincidental alignement today, must be speculated. However, if the ground didn't shift from rains or earthquakes, and the blocks are there as they were intended, I would say the short day that december 21st was probably their new year, as the days grew longer after that. Being in a tropical area there would be no need to mark the winter solstice otherwise, for it hardly concerned them, they were just keeping track of time, and marking the passing of another year perhaps.

I just went to look at my pyre urn in the shape of a woman from the Tarascan culture of Mexico precolumbian, now that is a work of art, that is an advanced civilization. One megolith doesn't compare to Stonehenge, and even if it did, there is an anchronistic interlude of 3-4,000 year difference for Stone Henge I believe was about the same time as the Egyptians, and precolumbian well, you can't compare the two.

Every rock is going to lose a shadow some part of the day, any given day, these archeologies are stretching it quite a bit, trying to make a name for themselves.

I have much respect for those of ancient times because they much relied on their creativity and knowledge to develop such structures. Nowadays society has become lazy and depend on technology to show them the way rather than solving the problem with their own minds. The mind is an incredibly powerful thing, it's sad that man has develop in such a way to disbelieve in such a thing. I hope that one day people will begin to believe in themselves enough, like before, to solve a problem rather than depend on technology to solve it for them.

DarkestDesires. It saddens me that I closed that thread just after I read yours hun I didnt think it would be kewl to have what was very close running at the same time maybe I was wrong in doing this..

Yes VITS99 these stones can shift with time and conditions but they dig down to the bases of the stones to find true alignments and determine the age of these stones. They are older then Columbus by many years... They seem to be of the same type of assemblage as those at Stonehendge these people weren't simple folk keeping track of time of year..Many societies that were out there were lost due to illnesses or mass migrations it is believed that the Toltec's and other people moved up from south america in many cases due to food shortages and other natural reasons......It is believed that like places in Africa they have places in South America that had been much different then today... climate changes being a major factor in all these moves....
We had a number of places that were birth places of great cultures outside of Africa and Europe...Below Mexico.................And the stuff about natives still wearing grass till this day is a bunch a absolute nonsense movie dribble... The harvesting of trees in that region has long wiped out those people they now wear Nikes, tee shirts with Yahoo logo's and many are now alcoholics..A sad statement since these same people had many a practical remedies for certain dieases.
Deforestation of the region has been going on longer then I have been alive....

DarkestDesires, I think most likely yes to answer the other question is this site is on a ley line (Nexus) and it might be the reason for it being where it is and for the parallelism of idea's I do want to look into this as it leads into Quantum physic theories I have a great interest in...........
Let me know more of what you find out about this I find it facsinating that another true scholar of esoteric and arcane here we must talk some time..
Please feel free to add me to your friends list..

Mikhail, it is one stone from right before Columbus, it don't compare to Stonehenge, Stonehenge computes more than just the spring equinox, plus Stonehenge is ancient bc and this one is definately ad, yeah carbon dating is necessary, and more digging, but you say they dug down to what? If you dig down to the earth that has shifted or sunk, then how can you find how it was aligned? I was an antropology major and continue to read about archeological digs all the time. In my personal opinion, this is not a major find. Consider the source, do you know what a yahoo is?

But what do you think the prupose of it was, do you think I may be right it was just a new years marker because of the lengthening days after that day December 21st? Persoanlly that is all I got out of it, the rest was just critique, I want to know if what I put forth may be a good guesstimate for the purpose of the meg monolith?

I read that same article. I find it's fascinating. Perhaps the ancient peoples of the world had some things in common. If you have an open mind....one could even imagine these ancient peoples having communication with each other on earth by means of the spiritual world...and thereby sharing certain beliefs and practices without ever having come into physical contact with each other.

I stand corrected. One of the blocks is the marker for the solstace, and there are 126 others some 9 feet tall. I misread it. Normally I am quite careful when I read a thread. I read what everyone has to say. Yes this is a find. But the culture of that area never let on to the rest of the world that is was there, so it is definately a secluded spot. I apologize to everyone, especially to the poster of the thread and Mikhial who I have found great respect in from being so astute to contact me in this forum to throw light on my error in the approximation of the definition of precolumbian. I onlt knew the date from a funeral urn in my possession, I looked up the precolumbian thing written under the feet of the lady, and I saw the definition as before 1492, I didn't know that it overlapped with bc times.

I love being corrected. If I make a mistake, do not be afraid to correct me. I am not above being wrong. I am human. I will now leave this thread with my tail between my legs, completely ashamed.

anthropology is the creation of history, or the attempt. There is a difference between archeology and anthropology. Anthropology is the study of man and their culture, archeology, shoot I don't care what the definition is, bones don't speak. I mean if they could find what these people ate, what kind of clothes, or art or pottery, or musical instruments, then you got something.

The thing that had me initially soured on this topic was it seemed to me to be a fly by night people who hadn't much of a culture beyond these megaliths. I was an anthropolgy major in college before you were born. I have always been fascinated with ancient culture because if the religions and superstitions or languages could be uncovered and undertood then we would understand our selves today. Life is no different 2 million years ago, 10,00 years ago, or 250,000 years in the future, we will always be humans no matter how we evolve or devolve.

It is just a shame that cultures get buried all the time. I mean there is a group of church people that wnader the earth in search of cultures to teach them about their god, and in order to get through to them they have sent life linguists to learn the language and then create bibles for the populus to read, and the very shame of it all is after they've done all that work, when these zealots go back, the culture is gone. Every two weeks another language becomes extinct.

We are busy digging in the past trying to find revelence, yet we ignore primitive peoples now in the present, pumping out college students trying to glean from archeolgy and stuff, sending them all over the earth, to the towns outside of the jungles so many of them they have to build a PIzza Hut, and then these tribal peoples with magic and spiritualism are like working minimum wage and want a TV to watch Bewitched and they lose their sence of culture. Life is ironic, loading a gun to defend ourselves we always shoot ourselves in the foot.

I personally vbelieve the greatest find was Napolean's rosetta stone, what was it Greek, Egyptian and Sumerian languages side by side? wow.

I mean think about what the world would be like if we didn't have egyptology? All their gods and myths. That is what we dig for, the Rosetta stones of these cultures. Carbom dating don't take too long you know, I guess they are waiting for a good sample of something to determine from a volcanic ash bed to confirm the antiquity of the sample to determine the age of this Brazilian Stone henge.

They should have a date pretty soon

From Wikipedia:
Anthropology (from the Greek word άνθρωπος, "human" or "person") consists of the study of humanity (see genus Homo). It is holistic in two senses: it is concerned with all humans at all times and with all dimensions of humanity. Anthropology is traditionally distinguished from other disciplines by its emphasis on cultural relativity, in-depth examination of context, and cross-cultural comparisons.
n North America, "anthropology" is traditionally divided into four sub-disciplines:

* Physical anthropology, or biological anthropology, which studies primate behavior, human evolution, osteology, forensics, and population genetics;
* Cultural anthropology (called social anthropology in the United Kingdom and now often known as socio-cultural anthropology), which studies social networks, diffusion, social behavior, kinship patterns, law, politics, ideology, religion, beliefs, patterns in production and consumption, exchange, socialization, gender, and other expressions of culture, with strong emphasis on the importance of fieldwork or participant observation (i.e., living among the social group being studied for an extended period of time);
* Linguistic anthropology, which studies variation in language across time and space, the social uses of language, and the relationship between language and culture, and
* Archaeology, which studies the material remains of human societies. Archaeology itself is normally treated as a separate (but related) field in the rest of the world, although closely related to the anthropological field of material culture, which deals with physical objects created or used within a living or past group as a means of understanding its cultural values.

More recently, some anthropology programs began dividing the field into two, one emphasizing the humanities and critical theory, the other emphasizing the natural sciences and empirical observation.

just chopped down a tree in the backyard, trying to send a message to the neighbors, cut long sticks or stakes in half today especially on july 4th, but I was thinking while I was chopping, that,

it wasn't a culture that didn't have culture that put up those megaliths. The fact that all that remains of them means it is probably a bc type dig deal. Think about it. If they were more recent there would be something there, but because there is no trace except these 127 liths, um that leads me to the conclusion I made.

I hope no one believes I am hijacking this thread. I am reacting to my perception of the evidence stated in the original post.

The fact that these cultures, their primitiveness suspect after a find like this, were able to do something like this suggests a very different world if the last ten thousand years had lead humanity in that direction and not the one it has.

I find it highly ironic that the most advances civilizations in the world are seeking out the oldest in the world for wisdom amassed in some cases in areas with little or no modernization or written language.

*is sure she is going to get slammed for her cynicism here*

Stonehenges and other stone erections are nice to contemplate.. but they are just rocks. We spent three hours at Stonehenge once, if I could takei t back I would.

Yes, it is nice to look at and go "now that is neat, they managed to build something like this"

But people.. I could go out now with my daughter, let her stack up some rocks, tell people it is used for 'great things' and people would be in awe a year later... big deal.

Not going to slam you for your opinion at all..The thing is here ever wonder what it was used for in its entirety..We have lost what we used to have this is why these finds are always of interest why are so many made all over the world by different peoples..
You got think here this wasnt made by the same people the Monolilths they have found all over the world were made by different culture some at about the same times..Why did this happen etc...
It is a bit of history we might never be able to regain as the people of this time didnt have the net or the printing press and much of what they knew was passed along orally.
It has either been lost due to the people dieing off or has been distilled by those still alive until they even havent any idea of its purpose

Well that the megaliths were so numberous on this site means they had to do the drag job of them like stone henge or the pyramids. This indicates a high tech primitive scoiety because of the engineering necessary to right such objects from far away quarry. Stonehenge has been found that certain of the blocks were from areas like 60 miles away or so, and they had to put them on boats. The where abouts of these quaried rocks will be determined also, like the broken obilisks in Egypt still half in rock and half chisled.

Engineering of this sort has not been found in the new world, for all those Mayan temples are but small brick. The development of engineering and raising such objects into alignment of astronomical order for use as calanders or sorcery, indicates also, that they were multi tasking in their expression of a themed civilization.

The Grand Canyon is more than just a hole in the ground.

well, actually the only way you could find out more was if you were there. I bought a jungle hat today, I 'm ready. BUt well, this topic is old now, you know they probably have those carbon dating results, we jsut have to know which University is sponsoring the dig and then you go to the website of that university and then get the latest on the dig.

Yahoo has forgotten about it. Ther will be no more from them.

Yahoo, peoples if you didn't know is a term from Jonathon Swift's Gulliver's Travels, you know the sailor that gets shipwrecked and stuck on an isle of little people, and then he goes to another isle and it is all bigger people than him, and he is from like one of the charcters in that Mad Monks book Gargantua and Pantagruel from the Renaissance, well, he goes to a third island and it has horse people that talk and Yahoos who are unable to talk and they don't wear clothes. That is where Yahoo comes from. 1800's England.

That is another one of the reasons why I initially reacted to this thread wrong. I didn't read carefully about it, because I considered the source Yahoo. All I have to do is burp and I blow those yahoos away, but the woman who posted it of course did a very sholarly thing and posted information on a deserving topic, and when I say "consider the source" I am not talking about her.

Oh I am a premium member now, so I see all the people who said great profile I will give you a ten, and then they gave me a 1. Thanks Mikhail for stalking me, I guess I am a worthy opponent, try to get some sleep though.

Perhaps more interesting still are the rights, just as an example, that the stones were used for. Whatever purpose the stones were used for, they got something out of it. If indeed it was a multi-purpose facility or a dedicated site, we may yet be able to learn something from their methods and their results. Unfortunately, this is when the other side of history kicks in and we have to remember that there in all likelyhood was either no writing system available, or no record of the functions themselves.

Matsunome..In so many ways I wish we could get those answers..If I could figure how to go back in time just to see why it was built what wonders..I dont know if it was a multi purpose facility at all..I do know how ever that Stonehendge it self has been used for a number of differnt reasons..It is the only one that has good docmentation of the people at the time and what they used it for..What Rite's, Rituals, yes it was used as a way of telling time but it went deeper they used Stonehendge from what I have read for toher things like rights of passage this is what I was reffering to when I said that....

well, there is much attention to these objects now, and I am sure a spiritual connection was there to bring people from far away mpountains to see these skyscrapers as people flock to my city now, of course there was sacrifices on them, if not human blood, artwork too has residue that can be, when even the pigment is lost, I am sure they'll go at it with the full spectrum of the bizarre infra red, ultra violet, black lights, whathave you, and they will see whatever artwork was on these objects long ago, once the artwork can be unveiled then perhaps the purpose of them detected.

Of course the longer and fuirther back the history goes of the site, the higher the chance they have a symbolic alphabet, which has a better chance of being deciphered if not for accuracy of thought but gyst. Yes some symbolic alphabets like the egyptians are symbolic only for sound, the picture of an eagle in Hierogylphs is the action oif the tongue what sound it makes in that language and doesn't mean eagle, so, I mean that is why we had trouble with hieroglyphs until the rossetta stone, so but there is a chance that their symbolic archair language would not be symbol of sound formation on tongue, and more a representative symbolism of thought.

If the blood off the stone can be fporensically swabbed, even if it is onloy one red blood cell, from that dna we can tell how tall they were what kind of diseases they had, the color of their eyes, if they were chinese,

there is alot of telling information in the blood since the mapping of the genome which is complete.

It is good they cut open people on those megaliths, probably sacrificing angels to some vampire god.

(Why do I feel so good? Um, Callia came around. I feel good, you should have seen the romantic letter I sent her.) We will pump you up!

Well of course time wears away the outside of such megaliths, so blood or even ochre or squid ink would wash away, and even the chemical markers that a pigment was there, but hopefully there was either an earthquake which destroyed that civilization, or a volcano to bury it in ash like POmpei, or a iconoclastic revolution going against the priests that interpreted this Monolith forest, for if they did, like what the Barbarians did to rome about 6 times, then one of those stones may be flipped on it's side and the original markings are there. It is nice that when people lived in caves they used to hang out and draw 30,000 years ago in the old world, waiting out the long winters, they didn't know that caves, even if they fill up with mud, they are protected out of the elements, and the paintings in caves stand the test of time.

Of course if none of these blocks are turned over one could be under a ledge of sorts which could have protected one of the faces, but I am sure the site is on a high ground protected by no outcrop, for they were probably astronomically aligned. Has anyone seen a picture of the area?

Yeah POmpei or even Herculaneum on the shore of Vesuvius was a great archeological find. I think that was from 60 ad. I have seen the castes they made of the frozen bodies in time. Huddling as the ash covered them they were already dead by the sulpheric fumes. It was in a department store in the 1980's like MAcy's or something. The bodies degenerated into nothing and the archeologists kept running into these spaces, and one of the guys, I think it was a French man he filled plaster into the space and came up with all these shapes of bodies protecting their children...

I think the area of the megaliths should be searched for caves. Any splunkerers? In our midst? There would be art in the caves. You could go around with like a echo location device and find long dead caves.

Thanks for a great thread.

What I didn't see or read in this thread is this: Are the structures in the same positions are the ones at Stonehenge? Are the alignments based upon a certain constellation? I have a feeling that there will be similarities on both counts. If that in fact is the case it's curious to me to see how these "people" had the same idea in different parts of the world at different time periods. Are we really different from the tribes in the amazon? Or was it possible it was done from a different race. Extra terrestrial perhaps? No i'm not trying to degrade this thread with "National Enquirer" type questions, but I was just curious.

Thank you DD for a wonderful find. ;P

most of the ancient world used the moon and celestial movements for time keeping etc. not that a history lesson is needed however. one thing I have been finding is that lots of parks and the like have been putting in mini replicas (for demonstration) of stonehenge. and the thing that suprises me is that for open air structures they have amazing central accousics.
