Voodoo... What is it?...
I heard lots of different views about all kinds of magic, rituals, spells, ceremonies, and other spiritual happenings. Most of which coming from Wiccan and vampirism practices. But what of voodoo and these tales I hear about voodoo/spirit dolls and deviations; the necromancy? What spells and magic types are used here? What are the events that take place in voodoo rituals and ceremonies? And what other practices maybe involved?
Has anyone experienced, witnessed, or practiced voodoo? What have you heard, what do you know, and what are your opinions about this subject? Tell me about it and discuss...
Thank you...
So am I. I have always been very interested and fond of magic, spiritual events, and anything mysterious (which is why I am also quite attached to myths and legends). I stalk anything related to witchcraft, but not much has been said about the world of "voodoo". This type is a mystery to me. A mystery I see myself atracted to it like a moth to a flame. Any information would be great. Knowledge on mystery and magic is my crack. lol
The mother of one of my ex-mother-in-law use to do voodoo, don't know if she does it, but I use to be really affraid of her and had alot of trouble while I was with her grand-son it was hell most day, if she was fine we were in shit if she was ill I was fine, sicne she was unable to do much, until another one got a gf in the family, then she was the new target, this family was like curse, no male has gf or wife, they all are single and with the children, she manage to cusre us all the girls and as for the grand-daughters well they have the kids but its a hell of a ride for them. So waht basicly she does is putting curses on the bf/gf, she is getting weaker now and even no longer able to get to me, sinced I am away form the family but when I was there she was strong, but I was still lucky cause I know one of thegf was not so lucky she was in direct contact with the old woman and she had to face her often and from the way she spoke, the old one had dolls of us all and an altar with it to curse us, so basicly the voodoo she did was with dolls and altar to put cusres on others in order to keep her family under her grip.
So as for other voodoo stuff I have seen documentairy on it and it was shown sacrifice of animals in order to use the blood to do the ritual and send out spells and curses.
voodoo? hey, u must check out the movie The Skeleton Key. great one, kinda scary too. voodoo stuff is what its all about lol remember, kinda scary....
No alixaryon it is not.
Voodoo has it's beginnings in West Africa and was brought to the US via the slave trade. The voodoo practicioners used to camoflage their deities as catholic saints to hide them from there masters.
The use of the doll was originally to point out pressure points. How it became a "ritual" remains a myth, however many believe that modern day horror movies are responsible for this.
You can also find a lot of this information via Wikipedia.
Voodoo Practiconers are very strong. I had a friend who kept having voodoo magick used against her and no matter what I did to stop it the voodoo was always stronger.
as I understand it Voodoo as with any magick can go good or evil. It is suppose to be mainly about communing with Ancestors and spirits.
i know that brickdust helps ward off those who cant be trusted. but that came from skeleton key. not sure if its true
I've done the voodoo thing on my x. We wer still married and he had taken a trip to his homeland Sweden with his girlfriend. His gf told about all the suffering he went through unaware of what I had done. It was sweet!
BLESSED BE
The movie Skeleton Key was actualy about Whodoo (not sure if that is how you spell it), not voodoo.
Im not very familiar with voodoo. What I have learned of it while in New Orleans, scared me enough to steer clear of it. Though supposedly, its not supposed to be good or evil. It depends on the user.
I wouldnt mind reading about if anyone has any factual information/links they can share.
I had a woman in New Orleans scoff at the reproductions of Voodoo Dolls in New Orleans. Aparently a voodoo doll is suposed to be made from brittle wood, spanish moss, and a bit of something from the person you wish to affect. The reason for this was so that if you were caught with it by the "man" you could snap it with one hand and it would desintigrate into something unrecognizable... thus not get caught.
try this on for size it a christion relgion formed be black slaves coming over here and being bought by the french.
you see the most hated french were more open towards their slaves infact if you look up french colionize you see that they hold the highest voodoo practicing people.
weird or not just think of it as pur good and from africa
Yes, yes. I am very pleased with what I am hearing so far. I have watched the movies Skeleton Key, Voodoo Moon, and a reality TV show called Mad Mad House (which has a voodoo priestess in it who did some practices) which just made me even more interested and curious. But those two were just movies and the show had little explaination, so I seek to find other views, the truth, and possibly more detailed infomation. I like the responces here and appreciate the input. Keep it up...

http://www.scifiuk.com/data/shows/mmh/priestess.asp
Check these out, if you haven't seen the show. This is the Mad Mad House. Five hosts with real alternative lifestyles (Don the Vampire, Fiona the Wicca Witch, Iya Ta' shia the Voodoo Priestess, Art the Modern Primative, and Avocado the Naturist) put ten normal people through trials (tests and competitions related to their practice) to see which one comes out on top and has the most open mind and will to spiritually transform themselves into a better person through these five "rights of passage"...
I am married to someone who works voodoo and his dolls if he uses any are personally made.He uses personal items of that person hair cloth or even blood and I dont ask how he gets any of it.But It seems to work the person is affected
all i no is that if it dose work then the results are bad...sum times
i spent 9.5 months down in LA and got to witness alot of things includeing a ritual as far as that goes it was intersting and all but not my cup of tea
Yes, that's true. I know voodoo has nothing to do with the devil or any type of evil practice or I wouldn't be interested. If I believed something to be evil, I would not have any part in it and I would not want to know anything about it. I know of these misunderstandings and misinterpretations so I am fine with these voodoo practices. It is nice to hear about... -^_^-
Just like any other religous practices voodoo has it's pros and cons it is up to the believer to have faith in it and stand by their convictions. Good or bad it is all on the intent of the ritual that determines the outcome of it being good or bad.

Yes, Darkfury. Everything comes down to intent. A question everyone should ask themselves - 'What are my intentions?'
Oh, I am well aware of intention. Just reasuring that I know it is a practice without any devil's presence...
thats good being pagan I do not believe in the devil so he has never been a fear factor for me lol. Voodoo is much like Necromancy it is feared because it is not understood fully unless you are a practicioner of said craft
from what i understand of voodoo it is mostly what what we (Pagans) refer to as "left-handed" majick. and we consider it to be a malevolent form of majick, though we do acknowledge its existance.

Voodoo, or Vodunism is not unlike Greek Mythology where there are many many gods. There is a main god, and others who speak to humans and the humans who speak to the lesser gods relaying their messages. Now this is just about all they have in common. Vodunism is perhaps the Oldest practiced religion ever. It originates in The continent of Africa. There now Black and White magic aren't all about spells and asking favors from the gods or sacrificing to them. Black magic can be summed up in these things: Murder, violence, destruction, anger, hatred things of that sort. White magic was of another kind: Peace, healing, solving conflicts with words instead of weapons. Sadly this is all I've learned about Vodunism but I hope it helps.
"thats good being pagan I do not believe in the devil so he has never been a fear factor for me lol. Voodoo is much like Necromancy it is feared because it is not understood fully unless you are a practicioner of said craft "
Any religion or belief practiced without proper knowledge is dangerous...look at christians during the INquisition they focused on fire and brimstone yet the new testament talks about forgiveness. Necromancy is just foolish to try and practice.
Of all the magickal practices Ive ever seen or been previe to, voodoo is by far the most in depth, coolest, most powerful and scariest stuff I have ever seen. Im a renounced witch, meaning Ive lost my faith, but no matter what I say of my faith, there is no denying what I saw with voodoo. I believe it only because I saw it happen. And it scares me to death.
As far as what I know about voodoo from my own knoledge.
Ancestors and Dieties (Orishas [sp]) are invoked throught extatic dance and "ride the practicionar taking over the body.
Grave Yard dust, Brick Dust, Iorn Nails, Nails from a coffin, Bone Dust and Black salt are all good for turning voodoo magick away. These components can also be spelled and used to curse who ever they come in contact with.
Most southern superstitions are brought from the Voodoo culture/religion.
i have exprienced one myself and i'd rather not talk about what they did to the cat in this ritual. but i would never go to one again.
Ooh. I've heard about peoples' bodies being taken over by spirits. Strange and startling. Some channel them on purpose to relate messages, I believe, but I'm not quite sure on the practice. Practitioners may do deviations to communicate with ancestors for advice as well. This is all I really heard about this necromancy...
Okay, if this is ignorant of me, forgive me everyone. I have heard that Marie Laveaux was a christian. (I hope I spelt her name right?) I could be way off the mark, but I am in aggreement with ImagesandWords on this one. With vodoo, it is about intentions, as with magic. My father was friends with a man in South Carolina by the name of Doc Buzzard, and he was catholic, but VERY highly respected in the world of vodoo. Also, he was supposedly extremely powerful, and my father was one of the only white men allowed near him, and he wore his collar when he went.
I have a couple of ritual water recipes that I got from a voodoo priestess in my journal.
When someone asks me about Wicca, I tell them to get to know the elements first. With voodoo it's a little different, you get to know your personal guide or Orisha first. One of the Orishas that some people may have heard of is, "Babalu Aye." In the 1940's, Ricky Ricardo sang of him but the connection between them is unknown.
You may found some info and produts at: http://www.erzulies.com They're down in New Orleans and I have spoken with them several times. Good people.
interesting never found much about it myself except they can call zombies no not undead flesh eaters but mostly dead slaves with their souls held captive by the priest
Wow.. I am 1/2 Cajun on my fathers side. My father and his parents are strict catholics. They were born and raised in Louisana btw, however relocated to Florida. However they dont practice Voodoo at all, and steer very clear of it.
My extended family beyond that however, Aunts, great aunts, are practioners along many of the inner bayous of Louisana, which is where I saw what scared me so badly.
I can go with intentions, however, from what I saw, they only practiced when they were ticked off at someone. And never was it a pretty scene at all.
Is there a core belief system behind voodoo? Like a set path that someone follows?
lordvolkhart...wrong...voodoo has nothing to do with christianity...the christians tried to stop voodoo and force their beliefs on natives forceably kidnapped into slavery. The natives, of course, out foxed the christians, which isn't very hard. I practice satanism, go to churchofsatan.com and read. It may not sound it but I respect other religions, but, don't tell me I'm wrong.
You know... at first I was going to say, no way voodoo comes from Christianity...
Cept.. all my extended family in Louisana that do practice it.. are also Catholics.
Is there any links.. proof supporting the claim that voodoo comes from Christianity?
With voodoo, it is more than intentions. It is a personal full time living devotion between person and Orisha. One on one in private. This is why the general public doesn't see the real thing. There is no, 'I think I'll put my ritual robe on and do a little ritual.' Their ritual is 24/7, private and sacred. They may share their energies with like people and go into trances because of it but the group energy is big time. And scares the pants off of many that do not 'get it.'
From what I understand voodoo originated in West Africa and came over with the slave trade to the Caribbean. There are still markets where you can buy objects and ingredients for voodooism in Africa. Mainly alot of dead animals.
It involves worshipping a personal guide as well as the ancestors. The "possession" people talk about is the trance-like state worshippers get into while dancing to drums in ceremonies. They normally have a message from a deceased relative or a warning to pass on.
Like some witchcrafts it uses potions and rituals. It also uses the blood of certain animals in the rituals and ceremonies.
Caribbean voodooism from Haiti also used certain tropically plants to induce an extremely slow heartbeat in people and give rise to "zombie slaves."
The voodoo doll is just a focus point for energy when casting a spell. I have no idea where the Hollywood notion of a pin cushion came from. Traditionally they are made of sticks and moss and something taken from the target.
I only know of voodoo being used to curse individuals and commune with spirits.
And that's all I know so far. If you want to correct me, message me.
As far as Christian links go; when missionaries were sent around the world they used the local religious beliefs and adjusted the Christian belief to fit in.
It has happened everywhere, many local religions now have some kind of Christian link, like the Day of the Dead festivals, Halloween, and many Pacific island traditions became Christian calendar events.
Pagan rituals were the basis for Easter, Christmas and Halloween being held when they are.
It's how Christianity has become so wide spread and diverse.

Christianity took on Pagan customs to make it more desirable in many cases... Santa Claus alone- a mixture of Poseidon and Thor... Thor with his flying chariot lead by his goats making judgement upon the children (good or not?)... also holly, evergreen trees, the list goes on what was taken from Asatru....
BUT- that is going off topic- just another example how Christian beliefs have blended with others.
In this particular case, Voodoo is blending with Catholicism - NOT the other way around.
Voodoo! Anyone Remember The Movie
"Serpent And The Rainbow"?
Voodoo is a form of dark magic.
satanicvampyre,
I never said I 'believed' that voodoo was tied to 'any' religion or the involvement of any god or devil. I merely made a statement to a previous post. You should pay more attendtion to words...
MaximusPain,
I've seen that movie, but to be quite honest, I don't want to hear anything fiction or Hollywood at all. I'd like to hear about real time events and such. Not whatever was made up in an act... Save it for a movie forum...
Freakshow
Try the book "Serpent and the Rainbow". Not the same as the movie but its where the movie drew its script from. It is NON fiction.
And, though I don't believe in satan also, Satanicvampire did call it right when he noted "INTENT" as the power behind the magic.
I am a solitary practitioner on most occasions, every now and then I like to join forces with particularly gifted witches that I am glad to have ties to. I have lived in new orleans off and on for some time, and have encountered quite a bit of voo doo, due to a man unnamed, but a voudan, I fully respect and appreciate the practice, and the ceremonies have massive amounts of energy that few others can boast. but i choose to leave it alone after seeing all that can be done with it, I reserve voodoo for the more...energetic. but most of your posts hae been lovely to read.
The best way to learn is to research on your own, unbiased informational sites and books.
People that are afraid obviously experienced things by those who had specific agendas, not the true foundation of Voodoo.
i agree...don't believe anything you hear on tv or see in a movie. alot of books will mislead you too. the best way to experience something is to physically seek it out.
My grandfather was a southern man and his family did practice voodoo......much as another said on here the poppets are solely made of hand and a chant is said to call upon the spirit needed to be invoked into the doll.....the maker must have an item from the person who the doll is being crafted after (usually their hair )......these dolls are very powerful and do work when made correctly......the misconception is people have a belief that voodoo is black.....much like any other form of magic.....it is whatever the heart of the creator makes it....be it black or white
In reference to the movie serpent and the rainbow....this is closely based on the real life experiences of an anthropologist named Wade Davis......he has done many studies on voodoo culture, zomie phenominon and the drugs used to facilitate such states
actually find the book that serpent and the rainbow was based on...very good read
also look into Santeria, it is the brazilian form of voodoo
As a Cuban raised in Miami- I know about Santeria. It's very common there to have practioners of Santeria. And yes- similar...
Speaking of Orishas- there's even a Cuban rap group named that, lol.
Are there more significant tenets to Voodoo beyond the practice of magic? I'm interested in the deeper beliefs over the spellcraft and ritual. Is the original structure now hopelessly blended with Christianity and Catholicism? How do they square their belief with the biblical codes against spiritism?
I've always heard that voodoo was something that was more spiritual. You have to actually believe in the practices and such.
The practice of Voodoo is probably as old as the African continent itself. Sometimes written Voudou, Vodou or Voudun, the word itself means God Creator or Great Spirit. It has been greatly distorted and misused; human sacrifices, vampires, dripping blood and devil worship all make the stuff of spooky novels and Hollywood movies. Yet none of these originated with or ever belonged to Voodoo!
Voodoo is a life affirming practice that encourages its participants to better understand the natural processes of life and their own spiritual natures.
If one looks at the dictionary, Voodoo is likely to be defined as an ancient religion from Africa that involves the cult of Ancestors, of various animistic spirits, and the use of trances to communicate with such spirits. It is true that Voodoo did originate in Africa. Today it is practiced by millions throughout the world, in Africa, the Caribbean, Central, North and South America, in various forms, often with elements of catholicism mixed in. However, its main purpose remains as always to heal: to heal the individual in relationships within himself or herself, with others and ultimately with God.
The term Vodou (Vodun or Vudun in Benin and Togo); also Vodon, Vodoun, Voudou, or other phonetically equivalent spellings. In Haiti; Vudu (an Ewe word, also used in the Dominican Republic) is by some individuals applied to the branches of a West African ancestral religious tradition, or to individual spirits or deities within that tradition. It is important to note that the word Voodoo is the most common and known usage in American and popular culture, and is viewed as a pejorative by the Afro-Diaspora practicing communities. However, the different spellings of this term can be explained as follows:
The word Voodoo is used to describe the Afro-creole tradition of New Orleans, Vodou is used to describe the Haitian Vodou Tradition, while Vudon and Vodun and Vodoun are used to describe the deities honoured in the Brazilian Jeje (Ewe) nation of Candomble as well as West African Vodoun, and in the African diaspora. Voodoo or Hoodoo also refer to African-American folk spirituality of the southeastern USA, with roots in West African traditional or "folk" spirituality. When the word Vodou/Vodoun is capitalized, it denotes the Religion proper. When the word is used in small caps, it denotes folk spirituality, or the actual deities honored in each respective tradition.
Its roots are varied and include the Fon, Mina, Kabye, Ewe, and Yoruba peoples of West Africa, from western Nigeria to eastern Ghana. The word Vodún (Vodoun Vudu) is the Fon-Ewe word for spirit. Vodou in Haiti is highly influenced by Central African traditions. The Kongo rites, also known in the north of Haiti as Lemba (originally practiced among the Bakongo) and is as widespread as the West African elements. The Vodoun religion was suppressed during slavery and Reconstruction in the United States, but maintained most of its West African elements.
if you want more on voodoo you can go here.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodou
Ohhh It can be very easy to anger the wrong Iwa/Loa if you don't know what you are doing i would not suggest jumping in with both feet and attempting anything Vodou without proper guidance from a Vodouisant with a proper lenghty background. which is also a healthy way to learn any magick or even any skills or trades through apprenticeship.
i did practice without guidance and backfired on my karma badly
my 2 cents worth hope it helps
I was born and raised in the backwoods area of Florida and grew up with the voodoo practicing culture all around me. A lot of it came from Hati. You might want to search for it there.
I think voodoo is interesting. All I know about it is that they take an item from the person they want to curse and bless it in a ceremony. than make a doll in their image and tie the item to it. Than they curse it or torture it. thats my guess.
hello vampire freak show i looked a little more into the voodoo.
Voodoo- Also known as vodun a term first used by Haitians in Louisiana, probably taken from the Dahomey in West Africa. Voodoo is an amalgam of occult complext system, it is noted for its formidable sorcerers who practice various forms of magic, including necromancy, spell casting, and hexing. Blood forms part of the rituals that connect voodoo to vampirism. Additionally zombies created by vodooo consum human flesh and have been ranked with primitive vampirers
I got that out of a book for you.
The vampire Encyclopedia
all i know about Voodoo is that you need to make a doll, then say a special chant for it to work....then you need something personal from them and put it on the doll
after that the persons life is in the hands of a Voodoo Master / Priestess
littlelostboy, thank you for the info. You didn't have to go through so much effort for me. I really appreciate that. -^.~-
"Additionally zombies created by vodooo consum human flesh and have been ranked with primitive vampirers"
CRAP CRAP AND MORE CRAP
hehe sorry had to get that out of my system....
a long while back we had e very in depth and well informed discussion on the zombie phenomina in regards to voodoo....and nowhere in all the references given does it place zombies as cannabalistic...this is again a hollywood reality...but then again...most of that particular book you referenced is very hollywood

http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/moments/s1260445.htm
three sites concerning the research of Dr. Wade Davis-ethnobiologist
seems hollywood has really influenced many opinions on such matters. truely frustrating if you ask me
voodoo is too far, i dont believe in that at all. vampire just crave blood and violence and stuff like that.....nothing else, we our own
Yes, Hollywood is very frustrating. One purpose for this forum is to hopefully seek true. Thank you for the sites...
also a good book is just titled Santeria
it gives lots of beginners reference
don't recall the author tho
From what iv known and heard, Voodoo is black magic and is the ability to hurt people through substitute materials like a doll or the turning of people to animals.
I find Voodoo very interesting and i want to take a chance to learn Voodoo or black magic but havent got the chance too.
But it is evil...
Black magic/voodoo is not evil at all. It is the intention...
So many state that "Its not evil.".
Sure, intent is the determining factor, but is it not the case the the so-called 'black magicks' are more likely to be used to cause harm, if only for the core premise that they are founded in a theology which draws in those minds actively willing to hurt, since their association is what the general populace understand and what the unscrupulous seek to utilise in their manipulations?
I don't see people going out to learn 'white magick' to cause harm. It's not seen as a tool that the miscreants can learn to use, so there is a perception that the magick itself is bad, since those who use it generally are pretty awful and selfish people.
This is unfortunate, since it's clear that any magick can be twisted to whatever desired effect is sought. The image is currently negatively portrayed and there aren't a whole lot of intelligent people acting to clean it up.
And that is not to say that I direct my opinions at anyone in particular, simply an observation that people look to it because it has the image that it has.
as has been said in MANY other threads....
voodoo is neither black nor white.....
it simply is....the uses it is put to are the black or white
I agree. Who's to say that voodoo is black or white magic? Good people practice this as well. Sure there are some rather spiteful spells, but voodoo is not a practice solely to harm. It is a very spiritual practice. A down to earth practice. And the speaking to the ancestors for guidence and advise...
I have read magic does not have a color.
Magic has a threefold purpose to bind...., to draw to ....., to repel from....
To say voodoo is more powerful... could be true. But is confined to New Orleans, Africa... is what I am getting from this thread. In my opinion some magic practitioners steer away from some aspects of magic whileothers are drawn to it.
Time to develop the intent or energy to place the intent in motion may be a big limiter to how strong magic.
LeVay write in the book of Belial to feel the emtion al release / build up of emtion in order to make the magics stronger.
In the rituals that people have veiwed of voodoo ritual I think some had seen that build up of energy and release, which could make the experience frightening.
I read while studying some druid text, not an actual quote, words of fear of, dare to...
Once a person manages their fears and dares to practice with a greater intent and build up of emtion... the magics could be more powerful.
Maybe in voodoo the practioner makes fast friends with fear, and dares to push on....
just my humble opinion.
yes there is a larger input of potential....and with a catholic styled addition to it also a certain level of fanaticism....
causing a greater focus on intent....
another way more power is shunted into it is posession of the caster is not considered a bad thing in voodoo cultures...and therefore the other entity is also feeding the spell power...as tho the single person were acting as a coven....
Voodoo,Santameria---I think I spelled that right..lol---has the same foundations as Satanism...The use of calling apon spirits to do one's will.
hmmm stabb....your surprising me....
it seems pretty obvious why he was discussing differences between voodoo and satanism...as the post was in response to the one directly above it.... seemed obvious to me anyways...
but maybe i'm just in a weird mental place.....but then again...aren't I always?
blood, oil & salt. let it dry in the sun.. boil it and then drop a crystal in it..
let the crystal dry and make an amulet.
youre Aura will tennfold it's power..
Depending on what colour rock,Crystal,Diamond,amaphyst,aso....
the type of Aura you will get.
Green = Power of the forest.
Blue = Power of the sea
Black/ Gray = Power of the Night
Red/Yellow = Power of flame
aso...
voodoo is just weird that's what all the african witch doctors believe in and they are all mad i dont think any of it is real
Yes, I do want to hear about more of just voodoo. Small connections, simularities, and differences between voodoo and other practices are fine, but don't start going off into something deep and off. You or I make that a separate forum, but I think one has already been created. I appreciate the effort you put into the discussion, though... Thank you...
ive been attacked by my Great Aunt who is a voodoo priestess or queen. she's from New Orleans, and we are Creole. all i know is that she hates anything to do with my grandfather; her ex husband. she killed her sister (my grandmother) for sleeping with her husband then she raised my dad and treated him like crap his entire life. so he ran away at the age of 13.
don't let anybody tell you voodoo is not real. that women almost killed me and my sister. good thing the power runs in my family.
of course I never read it stabby guy...hehhee you deleted it silly....
but ya I see your point....
not sure where the whole crystl amulets thing comes in with either voodoo or santeria tho...
crystals tend to be more of a european paganism thing
Umm. Oh yeah.
Sorry about that.
lol
STABB
A Layman's Blasphemy lies at the center of a singularity: True blasphemy never reaches the core.
I enjoyed googling and reading up on what some sites defined it as.
anwsers.com put it rather well if you scroll down and look at the origins voodoo
from Ewe
This word originated in Ghana
If you bring together the religious practices of dozens of West African cultures, mix vigorously, and season with Catholic Christianity, you will have something like voodoo. That is what happened in Haiti as slaves from Africa were brought to the island to work plantations there, starting in the 1500s. They were baptized as Catholics, but instead of praying to the saints they worshiped their familiar tribal gods, called loa. Their rituals, led by voodoo priests or priestesses, involved offerings to the loa and sometimes possession of the worshipers by the loa. Since the loa were very powerful, some followers of voodoo used rituals to enlist their aid in black magic.
This is just an observation, and not directed at anyone in particular. From the point of view of a social scientist, it seems to me that most religion is driven by communal belief. Whether someone believes they are being inhabited by the devil or whether someone believes they can affect the physicality of another with a "doll" seems driven, ultimately, by the idea that other people believe it to be happening. Ritual has been used by mankind since their beginning to establish lines and castes of power, and still is, not only in religion but in most walks of life. My point is: I think the mind is a very powerful thing, and I admit, I am a skeptic, not just with "voodoo" but with all religions and faiths that claim to have power over physical manifestations. I have not ever read or seen anything that would indicate that it is not either "groupthink", such as in the case of "true believers" in any religion...wishful thinking, or ardent desire.
True believers of certain pentecostal Christian denominations dance with and have been bitten by very poisonous snakes time and again often without ill effect. This is taken as a sign that they are protected by god, and yet studies have revealed that it is a combination of venom actually causing an allergic reaction only in some people and not others, and is speculated that the mind may actually be able to repel harmful substances from the body with enough forceful thought.
This is not even to mention simple tricks. The one thing I know about people is that they like power. If producing miracles does the trick, someone will find a way to make you believe they have done it. Go to a Penn and Teller show in Vegas....it's magic *smiles
