Zombies have had such a great influence on people that the CDC has even implemented zombie apocalypse preparation advisories. Check it out here. My question is has this happened before with other fictional media? How has Vampire fiction effected society?
I think it just poses as an outlet for escapism - a return to our baser instinctual emotions. People watch horror for the "cheap thrills" it offers. In fact, the majority I know of, avoid horror as a whole. Rumour goes it is unhealthy for the mind; leading to many a mental health problem. I know of a young girl who used to watch Harry Potter. I am not sure if HP could be classified as horror, though. So one day, she came down with high fever and in the throes of it, she thought that her father was Valdemort, coming to attack her. After that traumatising event, her parents pretty much red-coded everything horror and magick. Horror only appeals to a minor sector of society. Plus, with all the commercialisation, what can one expect, eh? It appeals to the primal, baser instinct of survival that many find cheesy.
Fiction affects a lot society. We see it in the media, business and society. I saw it a lot at the beginning I joined the rave. People with screen names of Lestat and Lycans (the term lycan started to be used after the Underwold movies). People claiming they were 100 years old, immortal and that humans shouldn't be on here. Things of the like. Nowadays you don't see a lot of Lestat's names anymore. Even McCullen is out of fashion. It shows that fiction gets its popularity moments too, just like now with Zombies.
There's nothing wrong if people like fiction and escape for a bit from reality. I do it but it stops there. Fiction is just entertaintment to me. If a person gets affected to the point that they get insane, then it means that the person had something wrong from before.
Fiction is not bad. Fiction does not influence people badly. It's a certain type of people that get madly influenced by it. What happens is, society always wants to blame someone or something, when something goes wrong.
We see it in the media from time to time like the previous poster mentioned. I remember times when minors and adults, did some crime, and people blamed movies, virtual games, violent anime, etcetera. It's all bullshit. People committed crimes in the past too. Mentally instable people always existed. However no one wants to admit the truth and be responsible for their own actions.
Overly reactive fussy people are ridicolous too. People made a big fuss when The Da Vinci Code came out. They were seriously worried people would lose faith and the world was going to end. People are easily affected by what they see and hear from others and make it truth. Just look at the end of the world fuss. It's 2014 now and no one mentions it anymore.
Vampire fiction also tends to offend some who live the life forbidden. Offended about what? Fiction is there to entertain not to educate. That's why it's indeed called fiction. I've been watching horror and violent anime since the age of two and I didn't become the bad person, that people said I was going to be.
Another factor, is that people like fiction and horror because the 'bad' guy is someone who is someone that people find affascinating because for some, it portrays what they wish to be but can't. In effect the antagonist sometimes, tends to get more popularity than the good guy protagonist.
There a great many quotes that effectively say no plan survives first contact with resistance, but that planning breeds success. The cdc probably does not actually expect a need for zombie planning, but the effort of planning for it likely evoked rewards beyond measure.
Vampire fictions allow us to examine our weaknesses, and overcome them. They allow the examination, without the paralysis of terror of a living situation.
It prepares us for the possibility that others will not know restraint when dealing with us, and in our minds eye we can choose if we are victims, survivors, or heros.
Fiction is most of the time created from the mind of a writer or a producer. But, the events created are some times made so real, that today, many humans seen as a probability of happening. 50 years ago nobody knew about AIDS, and then when it hit, was something from a horror movie.
I believe that people should realise, that fictional horror is just that. Fictional. And should be kept separate from the real world, having no influence whatsoever. This is why I bristle at the people who continually co-mingle all these modern and fantasy laden Vampyre films into the philosophy and lifestyle
killing a horde of zombies or evil robots trying to or succeeding at taking over the virtual planet may be great at stress relieving but there are those who take it too seriously
and first hand, being a teenage girl during the "vampire" and twilight craze I've seen the terrible things it's done to other teenage girls and what they want in guys
Being invincible, immortal, perfectly built, attractive, sexually superior, mysterious, polite, rich, brave, plus chivalry must be what all men should be.
Do you honestly believe there is such a thing as a real zombie??
That depends on your definition, "zombie" originally was a person poisoned with voodoo medicine to make them appear dead, that was then buried usually ended up with brain damage. People would intentionally do this to people and make them slaves.....if my memory serves me correctly anyway.
The combination was a Toxin that causes a paralysis, then when they dug them up ( never depriving them of oxygen) they would dust them with scopolamine, from detura which makes a person highly venerable to suggestion.
One way fiction effects reality is the example of the self proclaimed former leader of a "Satanic Cult" Mike Warnke turned Christian minister who pitched movie B rate movie plots as real events he witnessed. His ministry was so expanded, and it effected the fundamentalist so intensely that no one even bothered to check his claims.. thankfully a Christian publication finally investigated him, and his ministry, finding no truth at all. They published a book, and still some Christians stood by him. His BS was a factor in the Satanic Panic. Even David Berkawitz made claims of being in a Satanic Cult, but after intensive investigation it was determined to be without merit.
If you had looked on the left of the page you would see the article was a hoax or funny spoof. You should have clicked on Zombie Novella, lol.

We do have impressionable people but that isn't just fictional horror, it can encompass many things.
A lot of people need to realize a lot of crap on movies and books are just fictional. I mean even some of the things you see on the news you probably cant even trust in todays world of really happening. Hah, I guess thats why I dont have cable so there for I dont have to listen to the news XD.
Anyway, I think it was back in 2011 in the little town over next to mine, there was a rumor that there was a naked man walking across one of the bridges and when a local police officer went to apprehend him, the naked man bit him. Hours later the police officer went to the hospital as he was not feeling well... This is a supposive "Real Zombie Story" Who started it? Who knows, is it real, yeah no.... The world isnt going to be filled with Zombies, thats like the whole "Imma Vampire, I can bite and change you into a Vampire!" Logically speaking if Vampires could in fact do that... Then the Human race would be extinct. People need to think more logically geeze.
I personally know of tactical groups who have and have trained with plans to defend against a zombie horde. Nobody involved with these organizations believe in zombies or even the possibility of zombies and yet they train non the less. They use zombies as a metaphor to represent a large group of people. Using the word zombies in training is safe and more politically correct than naming any specific group of people who might be acting like zombies. Zombies are good for training, there is no doubt about it. You don't have to look any further than your local gun range where zombie targets will be among the most popular. Many people prefer practicing shooting at a zombie than the silhouette of a living person.
Back in the old days, people were buried with iron cages over their graves to trap them if they came back to life. That's a pretty big societal effect from fiction.
Well think about the people who have used the drug "bathsalts" and how they reacted, the things they did, the guy in California was shot multiple times and was still coming at the police
I am still waiting for the zombie apocalypse to occur!
society in almost 50% is influenced with movies whether its horror or drama or love . Look at or listen to perceptions of romance fantasy that others speak of.
actually the thought of a zombie apocalypse actually happening isn't that far fetched.....one thing most zombie apocalypses in the movies are brought on by a mutation of a virus....viruses mutate on there own all the time so its not that far fetched
on a side note the zombie apocalypse is already happening as we speak....im sure some of you have heard of the little parasite that has been affecting the brains of ants taking away any self preservation and making them attack kill and eat other ants.....now yes its ants not humans....thats what people were thinking but recently they discovered that the parasite mutated and infected some small birds which they did not think it could do.....so if it can go from ants to birds its not hard to believe that one day it might possible mutate again or adapt to humans..
right now there are 3 real possibility that could end the world....world war 3 which military experts believe at this rate will start in the next 10 years with the whole Russia Ukraine thing. which if russia goes to war with everyone else....at some point nukes are gonna start flying goodgame world.....or a zombie apocalypse via our little parasite friends.....or another black plague from a mutated virus
those are the most likely ones to happen not saying any will come to pass but thats what im putting my money on just hopes its the zombies XD love me a good zombie movie/series
All this horror fiction is helpful in some ways. It prepares us for the worst.
Think about when you we're a kid on trick or treat night dressing up as your favorite horror fiction character. Lets just say you went as Dracula or maybe Jason Vorhees. If it wasn't for horror films those characters and others like them wouldn't exist therefore you wouldn't have those characters to dress up as. If you dress up as such without the character being in existence the costume wouldn't represent anything or hold any meaning. Thus with those being in existence the costume would represent the existing fictional character in question and hold meaning.
Honestly, going back to the mention of CDC, it kind of makes sense that they're actually implementing a plan for an actual zombie virus. I'm sure the virus that would cause this wouldn't really make movie zombies that just shuffle along unless spotting an uninfected human. The virus would have to mutate to survive a lot of different aspects that could destroy it. It would have to have enough damage to the brain to have most of it cease function but just enough to keep going, being able to move and even relatively digest. Unfortunately, a zombie like virus seems most likely to occur in our world.
Let the fictional horror keep coming, is good for the economy. From movies, clothes, shoes, hat, and what ever people can produce, just do it. Is a cool entertaiment that you can enjoy after a hard day at work.
