Any color would work, depending on how strong your desire is. However, I personally believe that colors do matter. you can find correspondences all over the web.

Mostly it just depends on your beliefs.

I would think color is like placement is for a spread in tarot. It has meaning and how things are adjusted changes the meaning.

But that can even be said about the placement of the candles.

Right, usually unscented works best, unless you're able to find a properly scented and not one of those huge 5 or 7 wicked candles LOL

I would say pick the proper color using an unscented candle. If you would want to include scents I would suggest incense and/or essential oils.

There are specific color correspndences for candle magick. It is best to start with unscented candles and dress them with oils that relate to the task at hand. For example a red candle dressed with cinamon or fire oil would be excellent in a spell to ignite passion in a relationship.

yes platinumwitch, using oils to dress the unscented candles is a good idea! I use that method often and of course didn't think to post it. LOL

Using all of those correspondences, colors/scents/astrological signs/etc will add power to your spell, but always remember that the main power, what is most important comes from you and your intentions.

Im a total neophyte on the subject BUT what I have been learning is that the candle color AND the make up of the candle itself (sandalwood versus Frankinscence) are all relevant. Again, this is coming from a person who only managed to ruin the carpet in her study (whoops; kiddies and candles = fiire)

it all depends on your personal beliefs and how well you have been able to atune yourself with the higher levels of conciousness..candles are just a tool used so that you can get a certian mindset to do spells but they are not always needed..gradually as a magus/magi advances in their spells the physical tools become less important and the more important tools will lye deep inside of them in their mind as they project their desires and use spells with such emotions.

I agree that using the proper color, scent, correspondences helps you to remember you're not just playing around ..so to speak. And actually taking the time to find the proper correspondences helps to focus your intent on the goal of your spell. I also agree with andaluz, whether or not you "need" the proper color.. there is no reason why you shouldn't know your Craft :)

Candle colors
Proper colors for a spell
Make them work extremely well.
This list will make your magic strong
So study carfully and long
The candle colors listed here-
And all your spells will bring you cheer!
For lustful love and hot desire,
Use a candle red as fire.
If tranquility peace you now pursue,
burn a bit of palest blue
For protection, you may use the same;
Likewise, if you health is lame.
Pink for harmony and love
And perfect union from above.
If to attract is your intent,
Orange is what the heavens sent!
If you hold on thing, in time, gose sour-
Use purple to regain you power
To increase you bank account,
Light green candles 'round about.
To ground yourself and make it stick,
Brown candles always to the trick!
To organize, use deepest blue,
For stress relief, a lavender hue.
Use teal for balance, peach for friends
Black puts bad habbits at an end.
Use white if you must substitute:
It contains all the hues of color suit.
If you burn white insted, it's true
You must concintrate on propor hue.
Use these wisely. Learn them well
For each and every time you spell,
you weave a dream that you create
Into a realistic state.
The universe will not say "No!"
But confusing it may cause you woe!

Candle color can be very important, especially when you are first starting out. It can relate to an universal symbolism and assist you greatly. But remember when you are reading your color charts that if it doesn't feel like the exact perfect color for your spell than it is probably not. For example, most books will tell you to use red for love, but if you are looking for a stable or permanent relationship you might prefer a warm shade of brown.

regarding energy versus color, no matter what you do, unless you put your personal energy in it, it'll at the best result do nothing and at the worst result it'll just go awry. For the best results put your energy into all aspects, instead of randomly grabbing what's at hand.

of course candle color matters. Basicly any candle can do a majority of spells with the energy and intent and correct crafting but there are candles you cant just improvise unless you are completely psycho and trying to mess yourself up.

"SAY FOR INSTANT A PROTECTION CANDLE"

Yes you can use black and white for protection for corruption and protection from harm but do you really want to risk using a dark red candle for protection ? I would really think not ?

HAHAH if you do your completely out to lunch because I never would. My mother and grandmother were both witches before me and I learned young not to mess up your protection candles for your own wellfare.

For those that dont know red candles increase magnetism of rituals caution depending on hue can be very dangerous darker reds can be very dangerous its suggested to use lighter shades of red. Red is element of fire. Intense in meaning (highly charged) Can be very wild and unpredictable (Either one way or the other) A male color. Also Considered blood of the moon.

Black candle - Signifies: Absorbs negativity and destruction, repelling, binding, banishing, loss, discord and confusion, sadness, mourning, shapeshifting.

white candle- Signifies: spiritual enlightenment, protection (from the material plane), cleansing, clairvoyance, healing, peace, purity, prophesy, faith, sincerity, truth seeking, higher awareness & power, divination, rituals involving lunar energy, breaks curses. Used most often in meditation for inner peace. Children, Pets.

The colors of candles used in Magick are most assuredly important to the outcome of the spell. One wouldn't try to use a purple candle where a green one is called for in a prosperity spell.

Also, a black candle does not mean it is used for dark magick...the black candle is used to absorb negativity and to also balance with the white.

A white candle is considered to be neutral and can be substituted for any color if the color you need is not available.

I used to practice candle magic, I don't anymore. Back in those days- I remember reading that you could substitute white for a color you didn't have. When it all comes down to it- I think this kind of magic is merely helping you put a focus for you energy. You can make these things happen without the candles.

yes sometimes. It deppends on what spells you are doing. If you are doing a money spell you would want to use a green candle. If you were going to do a love spell you would use ether a pink or red candle. So what I'm saying is that it all depends on what kind of a spell you are doing. If anybody has any questions on the spells and what color candle to use just send me a message asking the question you need answered.

Back when I actually did spells, I used mostly red/pink or black candles, just because they were handy at the time. I'm not sure if the color of the candles would actually help or not, since it's been a long time since I used spells, and I never really looked it up anyway. I think most of it, as some people have already said, has to do with the energy you put into the spell, and how good the spell is done etc.

Using the proper candle color can help, but sometimes you have to work with what you have.

It depends on your own beliefs though. Not every person practices or casts a spell the same way.

White is the best substitute, like MysticWinds stated. She is the one who taught me that! But as long as your intentions are clear and set in your thoughts and focus, it should work with any candle.

Did you know that different coloured candles produce different levels of pain when dropped on the skin? Well, maybe that information is something that witches consider when making spells :)

I remember a candle spell from when I was teenager.

At Halloween Eve' as the clock struck midnight, you had to run a knife through a candle flame and skin an apple. If you skinned it all in one piece then that meant you would get married. Next , you had to throw the skin in a small pale of water and when the skin floated to the top it would show the initial of your suitor-to-be :)

Anything can have importance in spells, white candles can replace any colour. However it's the witch who makes the tools powerful not the tools which make the witch powerful.

Here are some candle colors and their associations from my experience with Wicca:

When casting a circle:

North - Earth - Green
East - Air - Yellow
South - Fire - Red
West - Water - Blue

Goddess - Silver
God - Gold

A candle should never be blown out. It should be snuffed or you will give the fire element an unbalanced power over the other elements.

Red - Love
Pink - Friendship
Green - Prosperity
Blue - Peace
Purple - Stress relief
Yellow - Cleansing

When using candles for spells the colour is extremely important, however if you are using scented candles, you must be sure that the scent also corresponde to the spell aswell as the colour as some scented candles will not work with some spells.

I have only read about candle magic. One of the first things in all of the books that I have studied is - DO NOT substitute a candle for one of another colour. I am not an expert, but I would thing that there is a reason for this to be stated in books by differing authors.

well it also depends on what level spellcaster you are .. some spells have a certain time and moon phase as well .. but everyone that stated energy of the caster is important .. There correct by far . you have to concentrate and believe in your thoughts and words or the spell your trying is as worthless as the ink its written on ..

Colors are a sort of guide, really... In my opinion, the strength lies in your will power, not the features of the tools you use to aid you.
Ever wonder why there are appropriate substitutes listed? It's all in your will.

candle do matter, and their colors too, when I use them I sue always a minimum of 3, one for the black magick, one for the white magick, and one for the spell, this way I maintan a balance in the spell, also to enhance it I use 2 more for the spell itself, related to it directly, making another balance out of it.

Colors are very important . In spell books they tell you what colors you should use , they even give you alternative colors that will work if the original colors are unavailable. But you should really try and use the colors that are recommended .

As in all magick, it is the amount of effort that you place in the spell - not the intention. There was a very popular saying when I was a child, "Hell is full of people that had good intentions!" I know what members are trying to say but it is not enough for creating magick. It is action that matters.

Candles as some members have mentioned are just tools. You are the magick but you need to focus it to create. That is just the way it works. Some people have more experience or an easier time of it. Tools will help you focus your mind on oneness, in case, a spell.

As for the color, this is called an attribute. The more attributes you have working in your favor the better. So, for example:

A love spell would use a red candle for passion, a rose for a friendship. But you can also have a white candle, with a lace table cloth, red roses, music playing, dim lit room with candles in the background, etc., Moon cycle will also play in the spell. So the color by itself is not important but the attributes of the spell is. This as I have said helps you focus. Another trade secret is using the seven nob candles for the same reason. It reinforces your focus on your desires.
