Can someone please explain the difference between a ghost and a Poltergeists ? It seems a Poltergeists is considered to be evil. Is this always the case?

Well,ok...A ghost has less agression and energy to do things ..such as a poltergeist
can do.
A ghost..can have the same temper or evil as
a poltergeist.
A ghost is usually one that doesnt know
how to moove on to the afterlife or is earthbound.Poltergiest..Dont want to moove on..of many reasons..usually cause it has
a need to stay.

My understanding is that a poltergeist is a specific specific term of a spirit that can interact with the physical realm. Ghost is a more generic term that can include poltergeists.

First, bloodtaintedstars, a "warlock" is an oath-breaker.
Second, the difference between a ghost and a poltergeist is that a poltergeist usually announces it's pressence with
disorder ( knocking and generally causing a fuss). A ghost, on the other hand, is the spirit of a person and can be good or bad, ghosts usually stay where they did in life.

the difference between a ghot and poltergiest is the energy they posses or use. natural energy is what either a ghost or poltergiest uses to manifest themselves. a ghost in itself does not hold as many particles of energy as a poltergiest uses.

a ghost is generally one that haunts a certain area or certain people only letting themselves known is sight and sometimes sound and movement. a poltergiest on the other hand is a more powerfull entity. it has energy enough to move objects, show full apparition and make very clear and loud sounds. plus a poltergiest can and will follow a person as long as the energies that it posseses is powerfull enough.

I could be way off here, but I have heard before that a poltergeist can often be a child due to the mischievous/playful nature. Such as moving things, hidings things, laughter that is heard, etc. Please correct me if I am wrong.

So far i agree with what has been said.

A ghost is the energy of a soul that has left behind, its imprint.

A poltergeist is the violent manifestation of that imprint which causes harm to the environment around it.

A ghost can become a poltergeist, but a poultergeist is an emotionally charged ghost, so it wouldn't fall under the benign manifestation that would be "ghost haunting"

Ghosts are said to be the spiritual remnants of those who died with unfinished business, or under extreme circumstances, such as a suicide.

Poltergeists (which is German for 'noisy ghost) are commonly believed, by those who do believe in such things, to be uncontrolled telekenetic phenomena manifested by adolescents, usually (but not always) females.

for the most part yes. but there are some that just play around and try to scare you. but there has been cases of things such as cups and glasses thrown from countertops and cuppbaords and hitting a person. or things like pictures flung off the walls. so yes most are and can be considered dangerous.

Infernal said almost all of it, one thing, a poltergeist can also be created by a living, by the living's own energy and emotion, strong and raw emtion, lik ein the American Hunting movie, it is base on a true story, and that was a poltergeist.

there are many many things that feed a poltergiest its energy. anything from alot of stress in a person, to ( as gross as this sounds) but a woman on thier period can attract them as well. a distressed teenager, or a conflict in energies. that is just some of the triggers.

This is known as a classic case of poltergeist activity, which occurred in December 1716 at the Parsonage in Epworth, Lincolnshire. All members of the Wesley family heard loud rappings and noises over a period of two months. Sometimes the noises were of a specific character, according to the well-kept notes of Mrs. Wesley. During one incident when she and her husband were descending the stairs one day they heard a noise as if someone was emptying a large bag of coins at their feet. This was followed by the sound of glass bottles being "dashed to a thousand pieces." Other sounds heard were running footsteps, groans, and a door latch being lifted several times.

The Epworth Poltergeist case is regarded one of the best documented in the annals of British psychical research, but no satisfactory explanation has been forthcoming. A.G.H.

I think there have been a lot of good answers to this post. Very informative.
Personally I think it basically boils down to two major differences. One is involvement with the living and the pysical world which poltergiests do to a larger extent then your average garden variety ghost. Two that poltergiests are not always the energy of the dead but can be manifestations of energy created consciously or unconsciously by the living.

Poltergiests are a manifestation of a young person. Usually under 20. Its an unknown psychic phenomenon. They person has no idea they are doing it. They aren't something that had a soul they were never living. They are generally bad natured and hot tempered.

Ghosts are spirits of people who've passed. They can do things poltergiests can, but were at one point living.

Its not so much that the youngster is aggressive, more the fact that a youngster going through pubery has so many raging hormones and pent-up energy that poltergeists are more attracted to them because of that.

Ghosts tend to be unreactive to the physical world, and for the most part are unaware of us.

I have heard that they are normally attracted to teenagers or people going through times of great stress.

Having no direct experience with one it's difficult to form an opinion....and difficult to get away for the horror film depiction.

Ok if my memory serves me correctly a ghost is an entity that can be seen, heard and sometimes felt, but has little substance.

A poltergist is a malignant entity that feeds off the energy of those unfortunate enough to encounter one. The more energy they recieve the more powerful they are. It is noted that in a lot of poltergist incidents a teen was present. So the entity fed off the teens emotional instability.

As I see it, a poltergeist is a restless spirit. A ghost, on the other hand, is simply an entity bound to a certain level (normally closest to our own plane).

However, to touch base with the person above me... :) When children reach puberty, there are often times stories accounted of "otherwordly" behavoir that happens around them when their mood is in at any type of extreme (especailly when angry or sad). This is because not only do they attract spirits, but they are unable to control not only hormones but their energy. The human mind is a very powerful thing, if you really put your mind to something i can in fact be done, even if it is not of the concious mind.

I just know that I have not ever had an encounter with an evil Spirit (ghost, if you want.) and I have had encounters with them... so I guess I will just have to wait and see if any evil ones come lookin for me ..LOL. just my opinion is all.

I think the only difference between a ghost and poltergeist is that a poltergeist is more evil or malignant and therefore has more strength and power.

And poltergeists tend to choose victims and stick to them. Did anyone ever watch the entity? I think that is a good story about a malignant poltergeist.

Basically sometimes it is peoples psychic energy that causes the disturbances that are labeled as poltergiests. As another person said some people (especially during their teen years) may not have control, thus unconscious. I was merely saying that it is not always the energy of the dead that composes a poltergiest as opposed to a ghost which I have never heard of being anything but the spirit of the dead. Sorry if I was unclear.

the difference between a ghost and poltergiest is the energy they posses or use.

A ghost is one that haunts a place of liking or something of that sort.

A polertergiest is that it's a very powerful energy, has power to show full figure, and can make things move around in a home.

an answer to your question MM, no its not fear that it drives its energy from but anything that can have any kind of energy be it positive or negative. it just depends on how strong the poltergiest is and or wants to be.

then if a poltergiest feeds of possitive or negative energy.. what does a ghost "feed off" and why is it that only certain people can see them yet others cant?

MysticMoon,

A ghost feeds of of different energies as well.. but for the most part they are fed off by the better energies. in which they dont gather enough energy to form a full apparition, but in some cases one does see a full apparition in which is rare.

and the reasoning that some people can see them and others can not i think is the idea of being open to the idea. not hat one actually looks for them but like a child, they see these things all the time because there mind is totally open to learn and see everything for what it is and try to learn about it. so i think it has alot to do with being open to the subject and and sometimes there are those with gifts that allow this too. :)

Some people are more plugged in and therefore are like recievers..open to waves of energy coming in...more aware of what other's call parallel worlds. I wish I knew more about it to give you a better answer or explanation...it's a good subject no doubt.

Ghost I read are pieces remaining of a soul which is not ready to leave the Eartly realm, whereas a poltergeist is an manevolent spirit bent on causing havoc

no.. not at all.. a demon does not thrive on and energy existance.. they come actually on no open invite. in alot of cases of demons, the people have no ida where it come from and no idea as to why it was there. they have no certain set off point. but can show up at any given time.

According to my word web dictionary a poltergeist is:

A ghost that announces its presence with rapping and the creation of disorder

And a ghost is:

1. A mental representation of some haunting experience

2. The visible disembodied soul of a dead person

I think a poltegeist is a ghost which more more energy than an 'ghost' like it has mishevallas oh god spelling is crap sowie..
But whereas a ghost it just the essense of a soul on the earth maybe not even knowing they have dies or they cannot find a way to the light =S *shrugs* Iuno.. xx

Poltergiests are the ones who make things move around in a violent way..... they are said to be very pissed off/ jealous spirits and their intention is to do bodily harm. They can't seem to move on.

Ghosts are those who have remained here with people to finish their business and then move on....

I don't think all of them are evil and intend harm, I think they are trying to get peoples attention but there is a gap in communication and they are taken the wrong way.... (that doesn't go for all just a few cause the rest are resentful of humans)

Poltergeists are supposed to be the things that can move objects around. Many people believe them to be just strange energy fluxuations or something.
They are different from normal spirits or ghosts, they're not any more evil, they can just interfere on a physical level.

there are ways of telling. now some of the signs will also go with the signs of a poltergiest depending on the poltergiest. for one there is a really bad unpleasant smell and only at certain times. another one is , that the demon is in the house for a reason so it may be inflicting some one in the house. but you will start seeing really dark shadow like things at times even during the daytime. but the one thing most known about a demon is the smell. and you will also know when a person has one in thier house when you feel a change to yourself as well. it may not be much of one but one would begin at getting snappy and for no reason. these are just some of the things to look for.

No. A poltergeist is usually considered the "trickster" of the types of spirits. Some may think they're evil because they don't understand it. But they more of doing it a joking around to them. A ghost is more of a general category for all the different types in my opinion.
