Ok, the question doesent scream "Read this thread now!" Hear me out.
I was in an extremely boring maths lesson (About algebra) When i started thinking about how a few months ago, doctors injected somesort of gene into the back of a blind man's eye in order to make it work again - The results have yet to come back. Anyway, Ive always found Genetic Engenering an interesting subject, My question is simple:
Could science, either in the present or the future, Create a human like creature that needs to Feed purely on blood?

I assume you mean human form... in that case - probably not - too many things that humans need to grow (basic minerals) aren't present in any appreciable quantity in blood.

Couldent they modify the body in order for it to create those minerals?
Kinda like dierbetics (Excuse spelling) I'm sure there working on the modifcation of a gene so that they can get there body to make the insulin.

Nope - you can't "create" calcium or magnesium or other basic elements. It's not like vitamins or complex sugars.

the is a disease that is the same as popheric hymophilia "vampirism" and the carrier needs blood to live so all you would need to do is find away to make the drunken blood git into the blood stream.....and blood types and blood diseases and defeacts not take affect.

so in theary yes it is very possible that they could but i highly doubt they would

Possibly it could be done so they need blood also, but the human body, like any living being, needs too many minerals and vitamins to survive.

Well I agree that it would be very UNLIKELY to do, there are way to many things that the body actually has to have to survive and prosper. Even if genicially done it would not be able to live solely on blood. Now if you use an artificial live form that is totally created from scratch par say then it maybe possible. Yet to use the human body for such a feat I feel it would be doomed for failure. Just my opinion.

I think it is possible to genetically engineer a vamp. with genetics we seem to be able to do many things. in time, i wouldnt be surprised if even a vamp could be created.

like was said above, humans need a lot of nutrients so changing a human might be harder but started from scratch i bet they could make a vamp.

All animals require certain trace elements and if you wanted to entertain the idea then we could look at the closest evolutionary relative. First, and obviously, it would have to be a mammal. We could look to the Vampire Bat who does survive on blood.

Then we would have to determine which allele(s) that would code for the several organs which requires this animal to survive on blood. If there was someway to transpose a human's corresponding allele with the appropriate ones from the bat, then it could be possible. The problem is that the human genes would reject the alleles and the specimen would probably just die.

You would have to begin at the very first stage of conception. We're already performing IVF and producing triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, and septuplets. Messing with human embryos is just the first step.

i think that in the future maybe. but like it has been said before. the human body needs to many other things to live.

Now if the took the DNA of a plant and that of a bat then maybe. u see a plant has everything with its genetic code to live with the sun. but here is the thing. with the human body we first must understand everything bout it before we can geneticaly create a living being.

Most of the scienific community only understands lest then ten percent of the human mind. the human mind is able to do things that most of us can not fathom for ex. When a man or women, becomes blind or the lose of there hearing. the other remaining senses pick up the slack of the one lost.

we would have to understand all of the ablities of the mind before we could do any of that.

i could be wrong but that is just my option.

I thought about the plant theory too. The problem is that plants also need other forms of nutrients not provided by the sun. The biggest issue with that being that the plant can't move - roots. The genetically modified animal would then have to be stationary and obtain materials from the earth.

the one aspect of the plant i was reffering to is the ablitily to harvest complex sugars from the sun. and as far as the other things need for the process it would gather it from blood and other resources such as some other from or if they build the rest of the beings needs from the ground up. with the advances that have been made in genetic research i think that we could in theory do it. but in the end it would depend on science to keep it alive. and would most likely not be able to live

I think, though, that photosynthesis could be an evolutionary leap for humans, anyways, if the glacier caps completely melt. That's a completely different topic, though.

If an animal can depend on another's blood to obtain simple sugars, there would be no need for the chloroplasts, making it a moot point.

Would scientists do it if they could? Sounds like a great topic for a Sci-fi horror flick.

well it realy could be possable.really i mean if you even knew what the government does to solders ,your food,& your pets ,you know it is possable.i mean how do you know that haven;t done it allready? vitamines, protien ,& other things humans need to survive are in shot form. in the hostpile they give you a shot of b 12.its a vitamain that you can also find in basic foods.but they put it in shot form.they can make or colon a blood type with surtain needs for human consumtion.but normal humans can only consum 1 pint of blood wih out vomiting.& vampireism is a disorder that has many sidafects such as being allergic to the sun ,need for blood (the ones wiht out this one age 7 to our 1),allergic to silver(and yes there is such),and many others.but unless you really know the government like i do then you haven't a clue to what they can do!

I agree with the question, why would science want it?

"Science" will generally work on curing ills of the population, or developing new ways to kill people in war... it depends on what the government wants that day.

A human/vampire creature would serve neither purpose since humans can be killed and needing to drink blood isn't a more efficient means of survival.

They might as well work on making Goat Boy real...

With the known (and unknown) scientific advances, dna recodeing etc...i'm sure the make up of the human body could be manipulated to crave/require only blood ... as the current blood make up stands it alone could not sustain life if it was the only means of sustanence (sp)taken in, yet surely if a lab vampire was created , a means of altering the makeup of blood would also be developed.

Okay. Bear with me here. This is going to sound way out of character. LOL

I can see several reasons why science would want to eate a vampiric like creature. Well let me rephrase that. Qualities that "mythical" vampires posses.

Invulnerability, immortality, flight, mind control, hightened senses, shape changing, turning into mist

And with most governments fasination with creating the bigger better soldier. I can see why a Vampire would be a a tasty target. Terror created by seeing such soldiers in action would be amazing.

But the drawbacks of a soldier that is limited to blood consuption, among others would be somewhat discouraging.

If the positive qualities that the Vampire posses are the target, there are a host of other mythological creatures that science and the government would mostlikly try to create.

Just being Devil's Advocate. LOL

You could relate this thread to the third Blade movie as the vampires made vampiric dogs.

But I think that doctors COULD NOT make anything that could could feed ONLY on blood. As the previous person said, it would be a weapon, and I have to add that ANY disease that ANYONE could have would have to be taken into account.

There is my two cents worth

Speaking on a purely biologic approach, it is likely that we could make such a creature.

Let's look at some of the details of this new being's existance and compare it to other animals.

Animals that live entirely off of blood: ticks, fleas and other insects, lampreys, leeches, and vampire bats. That's it.

So, our vampire would depend on a diet of pure blood to live. This means that enough blood would need to be ingested to get enough protien, fat, sugar (glucose), vitamins, and minerals to live.

That would mean that they would need to feed ALOT to maintain the energy levels to function, or they would be like the parasites I mentioned, and feed when they could but remain dormant the rest of their existance to conserve energy, since blood is not too efficient of a nutrient source.

As a precaution, our vamp would need to ensure they feed off arteries instead of veins, since the blood in veins will be lacking in oxygen and glucose, and would be full of wastes and CO2.

When can be start building one? I am an engineer, but not a geneticist...

MisfitChick423,

Thanks for the clarification.

The bat would be a BAD example then, since it is supplementing its diet of blood, rather than consuming nothing but blood.

For our engineered vamp, I would assume that supplements would not be allowed.

Otherwise, we have a vampire already. A human. They can consume blood when they can, and supplement other foods at will.

I believe it could be done, but what's the point? A person that only feeds on blood would have to either be able to find willing donors very often (especially if the vampire can drink more than a pint at a time, that would require more than one donor each feeding) or live off of pig/beef blood bought at the supermarket or from a butcher.

Neither sounds like a desirable option to me.

Oh, let me clarify a little. By desirable, I mean that both options would make life more difficult for the vampire.

It would be difficult to keep 2-3 donors around at all times, especially if one takes into consideration the number of times the vampire needs to feed in a day and the amount of blood it would take each time.

I've never tried pig/beef blood, but I'm sure it's not as tasty or desirable as human blood, especially warm human blood as opposed to cold animal blood. And somehow, I don't think a microwave would work adequately in that situation...heh

even if it were possible why exactly would someone want to? How would this person get the blood they needed without killing people to get it? it would be scary to know that someone lives solely off blood and will take what they want from another unwilling person.

I find it amusing that someone raised the idea of logic in here... =P

But anyways. Scientifically, yes it would be possible at some point in the future. 30 years ago we couldn't clone a sheep, map the human genome, or anything like that. Who knows what science will allow us to do in the next 30 years?

However I have a distinct feeling that if such a thing were possible it would be used not by scientists for mankind, but by scientists for the highest bidder, whether company or individual, for various and not always wholesome purposes...

Or maybe I've just been reading too many S/F books ;)

Highly doubtful that one could create a genuine blood eating humanoid. Blood lacks so much in the way of nutrients which a typical humanoid requires.

However, if the genetic alteration could be achieved, then it theoretically would be possible to change eye-colour, create longer canine-teeth (fangs) and pale the skin further.

At least that is how I understand things. :)

I was refering to qualities believed to be possesed by "mythical" vampires of legend. And I never said anything about defence. Any soldier that had such qualities would be anything for defence. LOL More like Terror and population control. LOL

As for why we aren't overrun with such creatures, it is because I don't believe real Vampires have such qualities. Plus we forget that Vampires are limited to....

Night, Homes they are invited into, Can't trespass on Holy Ground, are Vulnerable to Silver, Garlic, Wooden stakes, and a host of other things....LOL LOL

Hell an Army of Vampires would only take a single Napalm strike and they would be gone like anyother army. LOL

ok who has seen the show dark angel?think of that sow tho it mayonly be a "show" but a lot of what we show on the telie has a truth base .think of it this way the same way i was told every thing you can think up of doing the government has already done.or arew doing .the government main thing is to make the perfect solider.why do you think there are so many genetic testing always going on.look i know some of you who have already read my preveus post must either think i'm smart or crazy but truly think of what me & others have said & the only reason to do so is to make a weapon not simply for gothic pleasure.but there was a drug created in the gypsy era that when taken caues a senesory in the brain to where the brain was manipulaed in to think it only & soley needed blood to survive. so hey its posable or not your choice.

i have thought about this a lot and there may be a way. if the doctors bypassed the needs of the body in a way that the creature would live. for ex a mosquito they in fact do live entirely on blood of different animals. if they where to take that in to account then yes it would infact work and live.

can I ask a question.......why would science want to in the first place?

Why would science want to clone a sheep? Why would science want to poke around in peoples bodys? Explore the mind? See how human's react to chemicals? Because its science, and its driven by alot of curious people >.<

No denieing i'd love to create a vampire, and to some extent, in the future ofcourse i beleive they will.
If there's historical legend of a speices that's half man, half animal (Forgot name, senturion?) Then who knows, maybe its been done, or there working on it lol.
Anyway i was just curious.

Firstly, I don't think it would be possible, looking at the creatures that exist entirely on blood, they all have two things in common, a completely different digestive tract from humans, secondly, they are all small. Basically the resources of minerals, glucose etc. found in blood is not enough to sustain anything larger than insects on its own, secondly the digestive tract of these insects is specifically designed to supply energy from blood.

To second reason of why, well defence (or rather offence) would be the main reason if the new creature had some of the mythical qualities, although if it didn't it would still be a powerful soldier because it could be told that if it kills it can drink the one it kills and if it drinks from its own side it will be killed. There you have a soldier with nothing to loose that would live for death. But that's all pie in the sky essentially because not even the most rabid dictatorship would try for that.

that is true that is why there was so much feed back from dolly when she was cloned. in my belief's i dont think we should be fooling around with the whole creating life thing. i think it should be done the way it has been done for millions of years now. and leave it at that. but on the other hand if there was a way for science to heal a person with cloning why should we all them to die is it not the oath of a doctor to do everything with in his or her power to save that life.

i know what u mean. something of this nature is nothing that should be played around with. if in fact they did do something of this magnitude the repercussions would be beyond what we could fathom. this is something that many of the critics of cloning and stem cell research are saying. it does have some pros going for it but most of the things that go with this are not of a good nature. so in the end we sould not being playing with forces we do not understand yet.

yes we could but the question remains why would we want to do something as such. what of the moral repercussion's that goes along with the deed. you see we would could do it yes but what of the public's out cry for some sort of action against such a thing. the ablitiy to heal ones self with out the need of a doctor or other means that of say a vampire yes it would be a blessing in its self. but we come back to the moral issues that go alone with it.

the body that you would need to only have to drink blood to survive would be entirely unlike the ones that we were given with birth.
the bones would have to be made of a different substance, for one thing.
protein would be a tough thing to find, unless the vamp is bald.
there's a lot more things htat need to be different, i'm sure; but i'm not a medical person and i couldnt tell you much more.

Alot of you are asking why, so i just want to point out again, to test the limits of science, being able to modify something that seems to be set in stone, why a vampire? Because vampires interest me, If you like, we could change the subject to making a half man, half human hybrid!

Well, suppose the creation was for defense. Someone had made the point that the Vampire Bat only supplements his diet with blood and the bulk is made of insects. Why not make a "superhuman" that can drain their enemies of blood to supplement their diet? It would certainly save on military spending as we wouldn't have to provide as much food.

The immortality part......mmmm not so much. They would obviously still be very vulnerable. But suppose we could increase their strength. Cross the genes that code for predetermined growth with that of a gorilla. Didn't the Nazi regime try this?

I'm gonna pass on the idea of flying as well. According to physics, it just isn't possible in the near future - maybe in the distant future.

Mind control - certain governmental bodies are already performing tests to do this. Sounds paranoid but it's true. Do I think they'll use it on us to the extent that they plan on using it on enemy combatants? No, but the education is there for them to play with.

As for being over run with these things - whoever creates something that has a potential for killing typically installs a kill switch attatched to a chord. If the device gets too far away, the chord pulls the kill switch deactivating it. But, since we're talking about sci-fi I'd have to call your attention to Jurassic Park.

One of the best Hollywood lines, "We're so busy trying to figure out if we could, we never stop to think if we should."

Really, I don't think it's possible now. I'm almost 99% positive. However, it could be possible in the future. Possible, not plausible. Blood is tasty in SMALL amounts, but if you drink blood in larger amounts, you'd have to be something WAY more superior than a human to survive. A human body just can't handle that much extra iron in their system.

i think it could be possible-but unlikely-vampirism is technically a disease. in which case id love to be diseased. but its more complicated than anyone could possibly understand and i believe anyone who is willing to attempt it would probably be insane or in some deep shit if they were found. i doubt our government would approve. although vampires could be a good weapon militia wise.

Indeed maybe one day we will have many of the things that are merely dreams now, but I don't think anything would persuade a scientist who isn't amoral to create such a being. Simply put, does a rabbit try to create a fox? Remember we're talking about a creature that feeds off humanity, so we'd essentially making something that is designed to solely feed on us.
