First let me said I don't believe in ghosts. Second I am not performing some ritual to banish said nonexistent ghosts. I would have to believe on both the magic and aforementioned nonexistent ghosties.
Here is what has happened. My daughter is 10 and has an active imagination. She keeps hearing and seeing things that I take at face value as people looking to break into my house, so I investigate armed to the teeth, but find nothing. We have called the cops twice because of this while she was home alone.
I could just mark this up to that aforementioned overactive imagination, but I have noticed things I have done that came undone. Locks that were open when I know they were closed by me. Lights that I know I turned off that were on in the morning. Certain sounds like someone is in the house, but nothing was turned on (radio or TV or computer) and no one was home.
So, here I go into the deep end. What the hell is going on? I am not scared just more pissed that things are not 'right' or normal.
Any advice or observations?
Post comment:
I am asking more for advice on how to address this to my child to calm her fears. Outside of the damn doors being unlocked I really do not care, so long as I don't actually see anything creepy. I'd hate to start blowing holes in the walls for nothing =(
any particular kind I should be looking for? I have read (I think) that some devices work while others do not. Apparently there is some disagreement about it as well.
Are you sure that she might not be sleep walking? Which would cover alot of that. As for things going on when noone is there. I'm not sure other than, you might actually have something living with you.
err? What do you mean "something living with you"? She is awake during these times. She is a little pissed that we do no believe her, although I investigate all instances thoroughly and with deadly intent.
Well , I'm not much of a believer in the whole spirit thing either, but thats what it sounds like. Like you might actually have some spirit living there.
when things like that happened to us i told my daughter to tell it to stop and go away and i gave her hair spray and told her ghost were afraid of it after i helped her be more confident and somewhat unafraid these things stopped happening and that was a relief because i was beginning to worry and experience fear it helped us might not help u
just a basic tape recorder would work hun and as to dealing with your daughter maybe a few nights with you might help children can see more stuff then us sometimes. But i wish you luck with finding it out sweety hope i have help ya.
You seriously need to open your mind. spirits exsist, .. i just confined one that wasn't even human in nature to a lil red stone (read the malicious spirit tread)
and if things you do are becoming undone and no one was in the house or around, then yeah you have a spirit in your house.
As for your child don't discourage her gift of site, she may be whats refered to as an "indigo" or even a "crystal" child these children are very sensitive to etheral beings. too many time i have seen these wonderful children supress there gifts because other people call them crazy, or something. dont do this encourage her to develope it. i'll even give you guidance on it
Well if you don’t believe in ghosts and you don’t want advice pertaining ghosts you are asking the wrong people. You called the police. Good job. Maybe try some soldier for hire forum or something. It’s kind of odd that you would qualify your question by saying you don’t believe in ghosts then you ask if it is ghosts.
Maybe you should tell your little one that it's angels she is seeing and if it's scary to her something that helps even if you do not believe is to tell what ever it is to go away.
yeah also stop totting weapons around your house cause what you going to do if the thing goes off. into a neighbors house or worse into your kid. its good that you are at least investigating. but you wont see unless you open your mind.
besides what would you do if you actualy encountered something huh shoot at an etheral body. yeah let me know how that works out for ya, and have fun patching the holes in your wall.
if you can rule out any activity by your daughter while awake or asleep, and electrical surge problems ... I think you will have to have an open mind in regards to this ...
The question is not about my belief or disbelief, it is more (as I already have stated) in addressing my daughters concern (which some have given me ideas about how to refocus her fear, thank you for that bit). I could not care less (as I have again said) as long as it does not present a safety/security issue. My nonbelief is not at the core of my question, it is in helping my daughter to deal with something I have no way of explaining because of my unbelief. That is like not knowing anything about a religion other than what someone tells you and claiming to be knowledgable, just silly. So this was my last resort to address this from people who know about this kind of thing. I also contacted a local "ghost hunter"...haha. Yeah, he wanted to hook some kind of equipment up in my house. Not exactly 'fixing' my problem.
As to toting weapons, well lets just say I know my business well. The police were only there to make a report for insurance purposes and to give some credibility in the event that it turned out to be man-made and I solved the problem by whatever was at hand.
I understand I was just wondering and you have came to the right people to ask that question.
hmm it does sound like a spirit. i know thats not the answer ur looking for. u dont necessarily have to believe in them for them to be there. but for arguments sake, do u have a camera u might be able to hook up to see maybe if someone is getting into ur house?
Good to know your main concern is your child's well being and safety.
Preteen years can be rough for some children.
It's important to spend as much time with them as possible. Ask question's, find out who their friends are and how that might influence things they may be experiencing.
Take control and respect that whether you believe in ghost or not is not the issue here, but that your daughter does and you should let her know you believe her. There is no reason for any child to live in fear.
Speaking for myself here....it seems to me that the more attention you give negative energy the stronger it gets...If she is in fear of these strange happenings help her be strong....A childs at this age wants to be more social...maybe she has too much free time on her hands?
I gave my 5 yr old son a small bell...similar to my own altar bell. I told him that when he has bad dreams or hears strange noises, he should ring the bell. I told him the sound of the bell scares away anything bad and attracts good thoughts. It works for him.
Ladies, as always, you are a well of good information. I will try all of these and a special thanks to Clix for the personal touch as well.
I had a friend who's son was similar, thought there was a ghost or evil spirit aroudn the house (he had a very active imagination) and he was having terrible nightmares.
What she did was get a large crystal, I think it was a rose quartz or something like that, and put it on his nightstand. Then she told him that the crystal would protect him and watch over him, and that the evil spirits wouldn't be able to reach him with the crystal there.
Whether she was right or not is a different matter but he definitely stopped having the nightmares.
The bell actually worked for my 12 yr old daughter for awhile as well. I think she finally worked it out in her own mind that she had nothing to be afraid of. The difference is though that I've always believed in and been able to see/hear spirits and my children have always known this and have their own gifts as well. It's hard for me to reason how I would comfort fear of unexplained events to a child when I myself didn't believe.. which is why basically the only advice I could offer was distraction.
Clix has an excellent point though, children that age are extremely influenced by their friends ..and it could be that she's being prompted to overextend her imagination by things others have told her.
MiakodaWolf...the bell idea is a wonderful idea especially for very young children.
Ghost/Spirits or what have you can be very difficult to explain especially to your own child if you yourself do not believe......
You don't want to ignore your child perhaps they may posses a gift of the unknown. Maybe you can make room for the possibility of paranormal phenomena to exist and at least respect it.
Or keep a closer eye on your children. However you choose to run your household, then that will be your future.
It's strange when some people who do believe never will experience paranormal phenomena........ but even stranger to me is someone who does not believe to be experiencing strange happenings.
Go into true detail and listen to her every word as tho it were the most important you have ever heard. It may well be so. Dispell myths and show her the true power of coincidence and happen stance.
i know you say you don't belive in spirits or "magic"but i find that many of those that belive only do because of events like the ones you have mentioned
I would suggest getting a camcorder, one with nightvision capability and have it set over a couple of nights, play it back and see what gets recorded.
This would be about the only thing to do to have recorded evidence of what's been going on in your home.
As for what to tell your daughter......... Maybe tell her that YOU accidentally left the lights on or the t.v. on. Other than that, I'm not sure how you would explain these phenomenon to her.
Well this is what I say you could do to prove or diprove. You can buy wireless cameras you can get a good one from wal mart for like $60.00 they can be use inside or outside.
u have a spirit doing this. Get a voice activated digital recorder and u will get the proof u need
As I am inexperianced when it comes to children and how to address situations such as these, the only advise I can give you...With all due seriousness, is to go to the Ghost Hunters website of Tapps, and seek out information to draw conclusive evidence if this is a real occurence, or something else.
I know that I routinely hear noises at night and have only recently been able to relax and go to sleep when I hear them.
I would recommend a radio or noise of some sort that is constant throughout the night. I know that having a radio on at night helped me tremendously with being able to get to sleep with the noises I kept hearing. There were times before the radio that I would lie in bed and cry, I was so scared.
I also have strong paranoia about that kind of incident, which spurred from the one time our place was broken into when I was in high school. That only made it worse, and since nobody in the neighborhood paid any attention to our alarm system going off, it has given me absolutely no faith in an alarm as a deterrent. Also, our neighbors directly across the street were the ones that broke in...we saw them taking our stuff out of their place into a car a few days later...
hmmm...there is already much good advice in this thread but I feel compelled to jump in. Your situation reminds me of a similiar experience I had with a friend that involved a 10 year old boy - she was sceptical too but the strange happenings escalated until she was convinced that there was something in her house. I think the best thing to do is to first assure your daughter that there is no reason to be afraid. Fear can be a very powerful source of energy for entities and for young imaginations. At the same time please don't discount the validity of what she is experiencing. Next, I think you should investigate every possibility, normal and paranormal.
Another thing I suggest is laughter. In dealing with my friend's "problem" we used, among other things, laughter. It dispells negative energy and even if there is nothing freaky going on it's still fun and won't cost or hurt anything.
Let us know how it turns out. I'm intrigued.
i think no spirit or ghosts , it is a bullshit idea.
i think u and ur wife should spend more time with ur children . sometime they feel insecure when they r alone .
give him company so that he can feel secured.
that may help .
Hmm...
Could be either she is seeing things because she is quite scared of being alone. The imagination can do that sometimes. Or she could be really seeing what she says she sees. But have you and your wife experienced anything?
Hmm, according to what you stated, my opinnion is, that the house might be haunted?
You might try blessing your house, in some certain way?
Wouldnt know more, since I dont have more experience with these things.
Well alot of people have gave good advice here and I hope it all works out.
Perhaps chalk it up to her imagination. I know your hesitant to do that, but it might be the most calming thing for her. Also, how old is she? Perhaps always having someone at home when you are away can help steady her nerves.
a few things i have to say so I will put them in points
A) does your daughter get scared when she see's them?
B) how many times has this happened in that house? have you just moved in or been there years?
C) yes I agree children do have over-active minds but also spirits are more likly to be seen by children because the mind is still open
D) your daughter could have a gift, not to scare you but she could have.
I would just set your daughter down and explain that while not everything in life has a reasonable explanation, it does not mean that it is evil either. I did that to my kids when their minds started working overtime, patiently answering any questios they had and it seems to have worked. They no longer get freaked out about the oddness of my house and have even stopped mentioning it.
Children are more receptive of supernatural happening becuase they are still pure of mind and more open. My daughter use to frequently speak with spirits that lived in our house. She never feared them but it did begin to worry me as she seemed to withdraw from others. Talking to your daughter is a good idea and if you believe there is a problem then perhaps do what I did.
Burn some sage and walk around the house to purify and then speak with the spirits explaining that if they must dwell with you then so be it but you must live together and take it easy on your daughter. Just a thought. But definately speak with your child and answer any questions that she might have.
As a quick remedy, I like Priscillak's advice.
I wouldn't discount your daughter's fears. Rather, I would try to get her to draw them, describe them fully.
Take a look at what she's reading, or perhaps seeing at a friend's house. Also, the news is frightening, and kids seem like they're not listening, but they are.
The news is real, so I'm not suggesting she hide from it, but learning how to protect herself is not a bad idea. Around here, lots of girls take Karate.
On the unexplained side: Some girls are entering pubescence early. Poltergeists are supposed to be manifestations of all that energy. You didn't mention noises and such, but this might be the beginning.
If she hangs out at any friend's homes, I'd take a close look at what and who is there. Also sitters.
MiakodaWolf that is an excellent suggestion. bells have been used for a long time for that purpose in pagan practices the and in christian church .
It would seem to me that since I have a daughter your age and she is going through similar circumstances that you should think also of taking her to the doctor..preteen years are immensely stressful for young ladies. Their hormones run rampant and tend to carry the rest of them with them. Make sure that she is in perfect physical condition and if that is the case then sit down with her and try to address her fears one at a time.
Doctors are never a bad Idea... bad to assume it is a spirit when it could be a medical thing. But you said you have noticed locks and such being changed.
I am making a few assumptions here. One that you do believe she is not doing these things. and two that she is scared of them.
If you believe this is not her doing it for attention.. ( for she doe g et dads full attention at once as she should if it could be someone trying to break in) then maybe you should try to accept it is not a "normal" thing.
It could be a spirit.. or something like a polterguiest ( yes I know I killed the spelling sorry) that they claim is something in a child usually about your daughters age making these happening.
If it is the latter she will grow out of it and it will taper off and go away if I understand it.
Now if it is a spirit and she is scared. You could point out they have never hurt her or you or anyone. Usually things like this are simply the only way for a spirit to get attention.. kind of a hey I am here too thing. She could try saying hello to them.. give them the attention they seem to want and see if that will help.. assuming this would not upset her more of course.
If she is too scared to do that. Look in your area for a "ghost hunter" they can investigate your home and put her fears to rest one way or the other.. perhaps tell the hunter you would like a negative report in front of your child.. then they can tell you anything else in private?
In answer to the questions:
A) does your daughter get scared when she see's them?
Yes, but when I get in the room or home when away it is ok. She is still scared but not terrified. I always make sure she is out of the house when I do any clearing sweep.
B) how many times has this happened in that house? have you just moved in or been there years?
We just moved in about 8 months ago. The previous occupant said nothing about anything unusual. I asked the neighbors too who have lived there for quite some time, nothing again. The police did say that there have been breakins in the neighborhood though, this was let me think it was someone rather than some thing.
C) yes I agree children do have over-active minds but also spirits are more likly to be seen by children because the mind is still open
I might be willing to concede there is something there, but only because I cannot explain the locks and lights I know I took care of.
D) your daughter could have a gift, not to scare you but she could have.
I fear nothing for myself. I do however fear for the welfare of those entrusted to me. This is why I go into a protection mode so quickly, looking to err, remove the problem. The issue here is that I am punching at smoke with no real material answer in my head to address the issue.
And I did contact a 'ghost hunter' outfit from Baltimore. They wanted to do things that I know would aggrevate the problem with my daughter. So that is out.
I'll explain again that she is not crazy, that there is the 'possibility' that it is something we can both look into. Make it a team effort, I guess. And the thing with the recording makes sense in addition to the camera thing. IR or any kind of NVG type camera is a litle costly for this unless it turns out to be something talking on the tape, at which time I am moving out post haste.
Over time you will get used to your guest. Soon your little will learn to sleep through the nosies. And you will learn to sleep that way too. It's just like moving from that woods into the city.....over time you will feel normal to hear odd things in the home. As long as it's not hurting you I would try to live with it. Good luck.
Either you have a "ghost infestation", or possibly your daughter could be sleepwalking. Quite personally, it sounds like a ghost. As to why doors are left unlocked and such is a puzzle to me.
What is the ghost trying to let out, or in? Is it an attempt to leave the house, or an attempt to invite something else in? I would definately get this checked out, though. Unlocked doors in and of themselves can be dangerous, if nothing else.
I think alot of pondering is in need in order for the correct answer to be given , and that running around the house with loaded weapons wouldn't be classified as a particular safe thing to do, because accidental discharge, isnt a mistake anyone wants to make, i would sit her down and have a chat with her.

I would have to agree, if my ten year old told me that I would do more then just call the cops. Why not place a recorder in the house while you are not home to see what it is that she is hearing ?
The way I see it is this.
Children don't have the walls put up around them like adults do. Children haven't fully had the constraint of this life put boundaries upon them, so they see things much more easily.
I don't see it as a matter of whether you believe in ghosts, I see it as a matter of you listening to your daughter. At this rate she's already told you as best she can what's happening. No wonder she's angry, if I was her, I'd be angry too, as well as frustrated.
You want to help your daughter, listen to your daughter. Even if you don't believe in Ghosts/Spirits, believe in your daughter. Talk to her about it. Try to see the world through her eyes.
What've you got to lose? You're already at your wits end now. And who knows you might learn something interesting.
Thanks I will try the advice given about recording anything and if I find anything I'll report back.
If there is nothing to report then mayeb it has something to do with some kind of telekinetic chingadoolie/thingamabob/doomaflitchie/whatchamacallit/whazawhozit and will be my next question.
Guns...hmmm, I'll leave that one alone as there is just too much to say and this is not the place for it.
Listening to my child....hmmm, did believe her, that is why I called the cops, twice. A third time and they charge ya, but I'd call anyway.
And I found something interesting about puberty that has a possible link to the paranormal, thus my comment about telekinesis.
I just cannot buy the ghost theory until I see something that leads me to believe otherwise and that has never happened even when little.
