It has always been said that silver or nickle have affect on vampires.Do you think this is just Hollyweird or do you feel there could be a solid reason the metals affect Vamps like they do?If so,why?

I agree with the nickel part but not the silver part.
Silver being a resource at that time used by the churches, it was thought to be gods money and with it being holy silver could be melted into weapons which would slay the vampire.Since it was holy and of god obviously it could slay the undead.

At one time, silver was held as a pure metal by churches; perhaps that is where that legend used by movies/novels came from.

Nickel can cause more harm to bodies. It is used as a filler with gold and such. I know I cannot wear 10 karat gold because of the higher nickel content than in 14 karat gold.

I concur, Silver was one of the Holy metals, so it was thought to be of "God" or pure. lol
But nickle as stated by others can be highly toxic to all.

Nickle being harmful to people doesn't mean they are automatically harmful to vampires..so that I disagree with. Silver..I don't know. Seems a bit too far from the holy trail to me.

To answer your question oceanne.
Silver being expensive more so then rather then now. There was few places who could afford to use silver the church was one of them.So since the church used silver more often then most it was thought holy and pure. since it would not stain easily. At least that is what I have read about it.

vampiresimon the whole silver aspect is when the silver is introduced into your blood stream. Yes I know for an un dead vampire some think that redundant since their blood is coagulated.
For a living vampire less alone anyone else introduced with silver in their blood stream would get sick as well.
As for anothr reason from one of a popular myth, Silver used by a priest blessing it as they used it helped focus the holy energies into the silver piece so the silver would become more a beacon.

Colloidal silver preparations are used medicinally. They have anti-bacterial properties. ie. Silvadene is a cream preparation used in wounds to prevent infection - most specifically it is used on burn wounds.

So silver does have the "power" to kill little critters, at least.

That would be medically treated silver not silver in itself which is what would have been around back in those times.

So I do not believe they had that form of silver nor the knowledge to incorporate that as a use.
However so much knowledge was lost during the dark ages so who is to say what truly was around before then.
Also Simon I would say on personal experience with silver from people proclaiming vampires, they talk of irritations irregular skin color to the area where the silver is set upon.

Yes,I am familiar with Silvadene...silver sulfadiazine.Used normally at about 1%.
something like that?
Gold and other things have been used for medicinal purposes ,that is also true.
But Im wondering, why Silver is considered holy, besides from being blessed by a priest or something.
Nickle alloy is poisonous sure, but it is also a good conductor.

The legend that Vampires could not cross silver is very similar to that of the witch not being able to cross silver. The origin of this being, in this time in history, silver was a very precious metal; almost as precious as gold. The poor and middle class normally did not own silver jewelry. However, in poorer parishes some of the priests did have silver crosses. Silver reflects light, God is light, light destroys dark, Vampires are believed to be dark ... hence a Vampire could be destroyed by silver.

I gathered this information from this website( Im sorry my html abilities are low).

the nickel i have never heard of harming vampires, but may be true.
the silver however, i have never seen a reason why, but in quite a few vampire themed myths, especially christian based ones, i have heard of it being effective, although i guess that could be for the reasons stated above.

Metal have an effect on humans, why not vampyre, my understanding is that vcertain types of metal absorb energy better than others such as silver. Thus take a peice of metal that has absorbed energy from its surroundings and place it on a vampire, if its positive energy it will give positive energy to them, if its negative, well ya get the picture.

Silver does reflect light nicely, but that has little bearing on what it would do to a member of the lore. It's shine is why it has been used widely for holy relics, like crosses. Silver itself is just a metal, unless it has been blessed - and ~any~ object can be blessed. Blessings do have a power, if they are performed properly. I've seen some "holy" objects (even within churches) that had no power...

I think it matters on the style and intent, like dealing with any kind of metal.

However what I find, exceedingly odd, is that my skin will break out, blister and peal away where I wear what were once high quality silver rings. It could just be a change in my body chemestry, but it started almost a year ago, when I wear rings i have had for 5 or so years, that my fingers breakout, and the flesh peels off. Its quite revolting and painful. But just one of those things, can't be certain of.

Its highly possible if you buy into judas was a vampire after he tried hanging himself.
Although Ive only heard him a vampire in 2 instances
1. dracula 2000
and
2.from some deranged mental aid guy.

I think its more likely as previously stated metals have certain elements to them that make them a good conductor
So silver being one of the purest metals its possible that its more about the conductivity that silver perhaps had when possibly affecting a vampire

Yes,I leaning that way too RR. as opposed to the whole religion aspect.
there are some attributes that make it interesting, the fact that it reflects light,it attatches itself to viruses/kills micro organisims and it is one of the highest conduits..there seems to be some legit reasons why it could actually work.At least so far.

Yes if you want to negate the paranormal for it and use more scientific aspects proven of silver.
It would be rather easy to see how it would since some vampirism has been projected as a virus which attacks the blood stream and body of a person which in turns slows their life and causes them the need to feed pending on the version of vampires.

What Im looking for are paranormal things that can be at least back up by science. For me,it gives them pretty hefty substance,Because I believe they are one in the same. Both looking differently at the same thing.
But even if it cant be,it doesnt matter, its still fun doing it .I really think peeps make their mistake by hardlining one way or the other and discounting what another point of view would have to offer. But Im getting off track here...Just looking for some reasons that silver was chosen as opposed to lead or tin or brass.

And right RR on the Virus thing too.But then, the peeps didnt know that that would have been the reason it was supposed to kille them or repel them.At least not during the time period when much of the folklore came about. It could have possibly come from a much earlier period. And if that is the case, then there are all kinds of possibilities to explore.

I believe I stated earlier in this thread however might have been a different one. However During the dark ages a lot of things were lost it could goto say that. alchemists knew of silver's properties however that information was lost in time. And some of the remaining doctors or alchemists of that era remembered or held rumor to silvers properties.

I think that silver would hurt vampires for the reasons most of the people above me have stated . The church blessed there holy relics and service items . Most of which were made out of silver .

Thank you all for the info about the nickle that i never knew .

Ok, I have a few questions/comments here.

First of all, silver is not inherently holy! It is only holy if it has actually been blessed, and been blessed properly.

Secondly, I have actually never read of vampires having problems with silver. Werewolves, yes, vampires, no, though I imagine some vampires, like people, are allergic to silver.

Also, you say "So anyway.what about the fact that Silver attatches itself to some viruses..and in fact,Vampirism really is caused by a virus, like the V5..haha you see where Im headed?" Would you mind adding a link so I can read the scientific evidence about this? It does sound intriguing!

I have never heard of silver effecting vampires. Werewolves yes. But not vampires. The only place I have ever read anything similar is on other threads here within the past 3 years... although I don't remember anyone else saying that 'it is said'... those forums just mentioned how it works on werewolves and then started playing with the idea of it working on vampires...

I have yet to run into any myth or legend where silver defeats vampires. Unless it is a silver stake through the heart... in which case wood works just fine.

In my opinnion Vampires should not have any problems with various metals and their properties, only if those are trusted trough their skull, than they might find them selfs to be in a slight problem.

Other than that, I believe they are completly immune to the properties of any metal.

I would also like to say that there have been a number of testimonies here that silver doesnt bother them..Thaz kool, but might I point out that there is a difference in wearing Silver and having it introduced internally.
Now,I have found some stuff that I think some of you might find intesting regardless...
And this could in theory be applied to a dead vamp or a live one.Everyone knows what happens when silver and magnesium are mixed correct?
Isnt this what we always see or hear of what happens when shot by a silver bullet or whatever? They blow the hell up.
In the human body there is Magesium. It is very important to our good health. Now if the vamp was undead, all the blood and fluids dry up..everything becomes concentrated..get my point? But hey,its crazy yeh,...

Or could it be the whole reflective thing? Silver is the most reflective metal on earth,Vamps cannot see them selves in mirrors..Could it be,that there is something to that aspect? Who knows, just another aspect to look at.
Mirrors are made with silver.

And I have found some evidence that this notion of silver goes beyond hollweird. But I really fdo need to solidify that yet.

It was said that a Vampire could only be killed by a weapon or bullet made of silver, and was equally effective against vampires, as described in Eastern European folklore. This had given rise to the term "silver bullet," which is used to describe things designed to cure or fix a wide array of maladies..

so maybe, there really might be a little something to the properties of silver and its affect on Vamps beyond shiny and blessings after all?I mean, enough to be a contributing reason that gave rise to the notion that Silver kills em.

I like the statement Oceanne made about it's inherent ability to best reflect light. I wonder, what is the chemical, elemental composition of Silver that allows it to do that?

Someone else stated that Alchemists and doctors of former times knew these properties - why not now? I'm sure that even if they were lost, there are plenty of studies being conducted on the vibrational frequency (as was discussed within the thread regarding the Nature of Magic and gold), as well as reflective qualities these metals have, in modern times.

The nickel, however, Oceanne you will have to enlighten me. How does that fit in? Everyone else seems to be only focusing on the silver.

Basically it adds strength and up the silver's ability to withsatnd high temps.
Also,Nickle has an electrical property I find interesting when looked at in this whole context..plus,something else I find interesting..namilngly ...you guessed it,sound.nickle has one of the highest sound qualities around, and when blended with Silver?...

All of this is based on folk lore and artistic liscence from recent authors and screen writes.
The first Vampire stories have have been retold with new twists and ideas to make them fit in with modern times.

As far as the whole Judas thing, I had never heard that. It kind of goes along with my JC & the 12 being vampires theory. Not that I really think it, but anyone can add their own ideas on what is and was. This is definitely how the myth, legend whatever was born.

I believe the myth of silver with vampires started at the rise of the dark ages in the area's in which spouted the most myths.Places like Romania, Germanic, maybe even Italy or Europe.

However it probably does have more to do with the reflective properties of silver with in itself.

math equation

Vampire + Light = death
Silver = reflect of light
Vampire + Silver = death

I read that link that RR gave as to why silver would kill a vamp to be straigh forward I was not impressed... that link revolves all around the religous belief of christians. I feel the same way about vamps not reflecting in a mirror. PROVE to me that vamps do not have a reflectiona nd then maybe I will take this into consideration. Untill then I am not willing to base things on vampires from someone else religous belief.

I am going to look at the link Oceanne put up now and see if it is more convincing.

Wasnt trying to convince anyone on that.

on top of that find me a vampire who is immortal and will bust into flames or just start sizzling due to sunlight.
LOL.Over all its a myth which is what oceanne asked about.Regarding silver and what makes it do such things.

o thanks lol... ur right I guess it would be a myth. It just bugged me that all of them on that site were traced back to the christian belief. With the whole god being sun, fire, light, moving water ect.... and vampires not being able to touch any of them simply because they resembled god.

They even found a way to connect garlic with god... I was like 'what?' and made funky eyebrows at it. lol

Also from that point of view it states that vampires are evil, and really good and evil are in the eye of the beholder.

So... I'm hoping she can stupid down that scientific talk for me so that I can understand it without spending days bulldozing my way through it... I just don't have the patience for that and it is obvious that she knows science talk.

As do I lol.So I follow it rather easily,

as for garlic, it was used as a purification technique, to help ward away evils. So it doesnt surprise me that since majority of the Christians of that time era converted from a place that used garlic in that sense that if carried over in some areas.

I think garlic just smells bad when theres a lot of it. I think that, in certain amounts, it could make ANYTHING go away. I mean I've seen dogs run away and also people because it smells so strong... but I wouldn't say that it's because they are evil and can't take the purification abilies of garlic.

It tastes rly good in small quantities though...

and just to add I know many of you on here stated your opinion that its hollywood based however most of these myths hollywood took from older sources then movies. So it can not be hollyweird made.

as for myths there are an abundance of myths revolving around vampires.

One of the weirdest ones I will try to find a link to this one however for the time being one of the weirdest myths about vampires is that during the blood moon vampires are not allowed to feed from women along with its the only time they are suppose to be allowed to actually take a mate.I believe the reason had to do with the blood of females being unpure on that specific night.

Those links simply tell you the nature of the V5 virus, per request.

I think,as I had posted early on in the form of questions, that if anything, the reason Silver was chosen for either wherewolf or Vampire repellent,is threefold.
One,it is the most reflective metal.
Two, because of its resonance.
Three, because can act as an ant-bactirial,anti-viral -and anti -fungal.

Just remember that almost everything, be it silver, nickel, garlic, cooking salt, can be harmful (even deadly) to people if the dosage is right.

As for vampires? Never met anybody I couldn't kill, so there's no empirical reason for me that someone who believes himself to be a vampire should be harder to kill than other people.

Part of the reason I lean towards my conclusion..

Introduction
How does light interact with matter? This was the question
Michael Faraday tried to answer through his examination of
metal colloids. He was the first to show that metal particles
many times smaller than the wavelength of light nonetheless
scatter and absorb light strongly, such that even dilute solutions
exhibit bright colors.1 As an inventor of the dynamo, Faraday
would have been intrigued to know that the collective oscillation
of conduction electrons within metal particles enables scattering
and absorption of light at a particular frequency, giving them
color in the case of silver and gold.

Silver was not a traditional protection, "Iron" was the metal of choice. Iron shaving around a baby, iron necklace for yourself, or placing iron around your home was thought to protect you from vampires.

i really think this is a holywood myth... considering that we are real vampires, or modern as i like to call us... silver or any other metal has no effect on us... now, i´ve also heard about nickel, but not in the form of some accessory...

I don't think that silver hurts vampires. I have heard that some kinds of wood are better to build a stake with than others.

Just a challenge for those always simply stating its hollywood rubbish try to find topical things with silver that isnt older then hollywood there are tons of myths, legends, and rumors on silver that predates film era. This is not to start drama or any issues. It is simply to enhance the minds stake of the topic.

So why isn't gold used? It's a good conductor better than silver in that it doesn't oxidize, has a higher melting point, a higher tensile strength and good reflective qualities. Gold is most often used as a symbol of purity that is why most wedding rings are gold. Most of the myths and legends that I've read about silver was for a werewolf not a vampire unless it was in the form of a holy object like a cross. If the vampire had been Jewish in life would you then need a star of David made of silver? In the legends only beheading or cremation killed a vampire a wooden staked just paralyzed them. In some areas it was common practice to stake any corpse to prevent it from rising. In some cases cold wrought iron stakes were used. In areas where a vampire was thought to be active they would behead all that were buried and in extreme cases exhume entire families and behead them all in hopes of getting the right one since it was believed that a vampire went after his or her family first. I never came across the legend of them not being able to cross silver, but have heard the legend that they could not cross running water. Dracula was a work of fiction and therefore could not be Judas. Judas hanged himself there is no hint anywhere that he arose after that.

All Im saying,is if there would be a metal that could stop a Vampire IF they do exsist,it could very well be silver.Or Gold. But I am addressing silver right now.
Taking into account the things I have heard kills or stops a Vampire or werewolve,Silver could in theory ,indeed do it.I can clearly see why it would have been chosen. As I have stated,it is because of its ability to kill virus, resonate ,reflect light even in the most darkest of places and it can even stand on the fact it was cheaper than gold.
You believe that it is nothing but hollywood?Find the hole,so far,I havent been able to.
The use of silver to ward off things goes back to The Sumerians .
And if it is just a case of hollweird? All I can say is that someone did their bloody homework on the science end of it.
I am looking at iron too ,so far,not even close, although it does have a couple of attributes,it cant compare.

Okay, so here we go...

I look at things generally from the scientific standpoint.

Metal aversions typically arise from allergic reactions, although aversion also exists in the way of metals that are corrosive/radioactive. Also, are we talking about alloys (e. g. sterling/britannia/mexican/etc. silver), or something like fine silver (99.9% silver), or does it matter?

Anyway, on to my point. Let's say vampires are real, no questions asked. Why would they be averse to some metal (silver, aluminum, nickel, whatever). Does the metal give them itchy skin? Does the metal have gaseous properties that, when inhaled, make the vampires crazy (e. g. lead in lead paint)? If this is the case, what makes the vampire so different from a human?

The same thing goes for so-deemed werewolves, which may be defined scientifically as those with Hypertrichosis (Wikipedia Link) or Clinical Lycanthropy (Wikipedia Link)

I will side with those who say the only reason silver has an effect on a vampire is because of the socalled religious influence.

Personally, if one ignores the physical properities of nickel, I would say that silver has NO effect on vampires whatsoever.

It makes for some cool scenes and effects in "Hollyweird" movies, but that's about it. :) Of course Hollywood got something wrong in which wood is as deadly as metal... um... I don't think so. lol

Why would the religious aspect be the thing that makes it work?Would glass or something of that nature do the same thing? If it were blessed?
You know, silver and gold are considered divine or royal metals in the first place. And have been for eons.
Anyone else have anything to offer as to why this could be so? Other than what I have already?

If you want to say its holly weird back it up.Other wise it seems your just adding a minor post to help your ratings which is rubbish and ruins a thread as so many do constantly to my opinion.
If you say its hollywood prove it, do actual research and find where silver doesnt predate hollywood on effects, Yes I put a link up which predates hollywood it is christian based but it predates film industry. If i can do it I know all of you can.

silver being a holy and religious instrument has been played out in both the movies and the myths.the truth is silver probably has no effect on vampires at all.however nickel is highly poisonous as i have said before and yes it does effect any body, even an undead body.

Right PH.But heres the catch.ANY forign object that is introduced into the body is going to do one or three things or both..get infected locally,Go systemic by way of toxicity or tthe object will move through the body, many times surfacing someplace quite far from the original insertion.
Now,since it has ben said, that Vamps are superiour,it would be assumed that your normal metals ,lead included(Which, besides Mercury,is one of the most poisonous of metals) do not affect them.So what is it that would allow it to?
Look at the divine aspect..Silver scatters light and produces colour more than any other metal. The light I refer to is known as white light.White light has always been associated with??? Yes,god or the divine, what have you.
Lets look at the medical aspect. If Vampirism is indeed a virus, what metal, that is somewhat affordable can have an affect of a virus.Silver.Its proven. It is a killer of microorganisms.
Lets look at the spiritual aspect.
As far as Im concerned, the spirit or soul is a form of sound.Or vibration(And I have many things that would lend credence to this)Silver is a very resonant metal.
Religious aspect. If it has been blessed by a priest, then the conductivity and ability for the metal to hold a divine vibration,or the voice of God,could also be applied to Silver.
Magical aspect.Same as the religious.Only a mage or witch puts the "energy" into the metal.
Thats just the very basics.

since we are discussing legends it would be impossible to prove 1 way or the other. If we discuss "real" vampires and werewolves then it doesn't matter what metal the bullet is it will kill them. As for me personally I can't wear any metal that is not high quality silver or gold. Not only will my skin react to it it will attack the metal and damage it for example even if it is a high quality plating my skin will cause the plating to come off even on one guaranteed for a lifetime. The only other metal I can sometimes get away with wearing is stainless steel but it has to be someplace where there is body hair so there isn't complete skin to metal contact. For example i can't wear a watch that has a metal band but I have to wear one that has a metal back and that part has to be on the side of my wrist that has hair. The fact that I have to wear one with a metal back me be related to my problem with metals that are plated. If I wear a watch that has a plastic back it will quit working in a day or 2. The metal back puts the watch at the same level electrically as your body where a plastic back tries to insulate the watch. The reason I say the two are related is because most plating is done with electricity. I have been electrocuted several times and usually it barely phases me. 110v house current just tingles. I've hard 25,000 volts from a tv picture tube go across my heart that would have killed most people, that did more than just tingle. I'm not sure exactly if my body has a lot of electricity in it or it just handles electricity well. Some of that may play in your conductor theory all though they didn't know what electricity was then. If you look though at the things said to stop a vampire they would stop anyone. I like the one about the stake in the heart though you put the stake in the heart of a suspected vampire and he "dies" if you remove the stake and he stays dead he wasn't a vampire.

Not really odd at all, considering the nature of the alloy,in this case Nickle.it is the most resonant of all metals. And if that is the objective, then what better metals to use?

what i meant was that once you create an alloy the metal is no longer pure not that they had the technology to make sure they had pure ore in the first place at that time. I would say the main reason people had the misconception of those metals being pure is because they were used by churches.

Two very good points Wolfie.I understand what youre saying, and for the most part ,I agree. To add to your Mercury..or quick silver reference,it is possible that they commonly had mistaken one for the other.
Plus,it goes back pretty far,it has been found in Egyptian tombs. It was also well known by the Hindus and Chinese. Not only that, but it is a known antiseptic in that it kills bacteria etc...and it alloys well with other metals.

In order to protect yourself from a vampire, the cross or crucifix was thought to be very powerful in the Christian countries. Little is known of how holy symbols were used as vampire protection before the Christian era, however, folk-cures were often employed. Garlic was the most popular vampire repellent, as well as hawthorn and the mountain ash (rowan). Another defense was scattering seeds - vampires were supposed to become so involved in counting every single seed that they would either lose interest, or be caught counting even as the sun came up. Surprisingly, silver was not as traditional a protective metal as supposed in popular fiction - iron was the material of choice. Iron shavings were placed beneath a child's cradle, a necklace with an iron nail was worn, and other iron objects were placed strategically around the place needing protection.

Well there are certainly a lot of differing opinions here. However, i am now going to throw a spanner into this well oiled machine and watch carefully.

My thoughts are:

Firstly, for those who (like me) believe in the existence of the astral vampyr. How in the hells are we supposed to get silver or nickle into the astral realms?

Secondly, if the silver thing was true, how come in many of the movies (even though silver is portrayed as a vampire killer) vampires are seen to wear silver jewellery? An interesting contradiction.

Lastly, as both these metals could cause sudden death for any human if injected in a liquified form (Silver nitrate or Nickel nitrate), then i can see how the idea of silver killing a vampire cam about. The whole Good vs Evil/Holy Metallurgy is insulting to my mind.

as stated previously most likely unless injected or penetrated through their skin the silver would have no affect onto a vampire itself.however injected could be a different story.

As for astral vampyr that is a completely different form of vampire.Which many a person who believes in the existence do not truly consider them vampire.astral being in a non corporeal state changes over all what a vampire according to this thread has been talking about. As for astral types, as we all know astral has many things to it some do not understand some do,So given the properties of astral is it really one of those instances where silver would be needed?
Over all thinking on this entire thread I would say over all it depends entirely upon the situation. If silver is not available then obviously it would have no affect at that time.Where as any other means to mess with an astral would be.However its been asked to keep this thread based upon the original question. Thus as mind enhancing as your post was about the astral form.I in my opinion thinks it would deprive of the original topic to go too much more into it.
But thats my thoughts not everyones lol

I personally don't think either would do any harm to a Vampire. On the other hand, nickel is an obnoxious metal which causes rashes on the skin if worn in jewelry made with nickel. I doubt a Vampire can get a rash.

>>What ? You're posts are awesome Men,Im glad youre here.
My first line of thinking would be, first, silver hasnt been introduced as the only thing that could be adverse to Vampires. There seems to just be alot of stuff, about silver ,and it has been brought up before here too ..If we were going to start a thread as to what might be to the astral..start one :D Good call.
But in short, for the astral,I will say ..
Sound,material or otherwise penetrates all realms,all beliefs.imho
On the astral plane,I would not even be thinking about silver.Or wait.....resonance. :D
Silver tuning fork anyone? jk.

"Secondly, if the silver thing was true, how come in many of the movies (even though silver is portrayed as a vampire killer) vampires are seen to wear silver jewellery? An interesting contradiction."

>>Yes,I see a condradiction too. Looks like one for hollywood ...you know, hollywood glamour.
Because the accounts of silver go back fairly far ,enough to establish that the accounts are pre hollywood.

"Lastly, as both these metals could cause sudden death for any human if injected in a liquified form (Silver nitrate or Nickel nitrate), then i can see how the idea of silver killing a vampire cam about."

>>Of course they would. That isnt even an issue really,,because of the debatle nature as to what a vampire is..But it has been said, that the normal means that kill humans cant kill them.IE. lead bullet..yes?Not to mention the other stuff..

"The whole Good vs Evil/Holy Metallurgy is insulting to my mind."

>>Sorry Men,have to cover all the sides this time,it was serendipity. It presented itself.
Why should it be insulting...Let them ponder it in comparative theology if they want..It is just another aspect for someone to consider if they choose.
I know there are other attributes concerning the metal ,that lend itself well to it,either way.It is truely a good candidate as to why it would be talked about in the manner it has,for so long..
And perhaps it would be gold in space case...who knows. Its just stuff.Everyone has their own idea as to what is pure..
Which makes me want to ask...
As a mage,is there anything special about silver in your chosen path?Any secret uses or anything?I know there are Wicca who use it for stuff.Start a thread on that too.:)

when you check into iron look specifically at cold wrought iron as it is the type usually mentioned in legends heat forging changes the properties of the metal

it just occurred to me that might be why silver might have been used for some items since they could easily be shaped without heat as heat tends to change the properties of any metal

You have mentioned nickel do you have any specific legends about it because I had never heard or read any that mention it in reference to vampires or even werewolves. I could see where it could be involved since as you pointed out it is one of the most common metals used in making alloys and a very large percentage of people have a reaction to it.

Silver and gold may have medicinal properties but only in very small amounts it doesn't take much of either to be harmful to humans the same is true of mercury though it takes even less of it to be harmful.

Trace amounts of gold and silver are inside of everyone along with other precious/semi precious elements and minerals last I heard about $23 US worth.

The only reason i can figure that gold wasn't used is that it wasn't readily available because of it's cost.

Cold steel is an alloy where the metals are hammered together instead of using a forge if combined with the process of folding you can make a blade that is virtually unbreakable.

Had to slip in one more here from VentruePrince. To cover more aspects...

Vampires are not affected by silver, unless its in the form of a cross and the bearer really has true faith to back it up...otherwise its just an annoyance. Vampires battled with blades and such so silver is not the enemy.

Silver is a werewolf poison, you would need phospherous to burn Vampires, their thing is fire, not silver. (check out Underworld for a better idea, the weapons they used)

If you use silver to create a weapon...like a spear or bullet then it simply does damage as any other weapon would, however vampires are said to be far stronger and can handle great damage and heal quickly with fresh blood.

Now about the heart...wood (a stake) if driven through the heart will not kill...but will paralyze completely making the Vampire vulnerable to attack and destruction by other means.
