A few weeks ago a few freind and I were having a discussion about what does satan look like. I don't worship him/her or anything but there was a few good ideas passed around. Besides the red demon with horns what do you think?
I would go with either the Cthulu mythos, or the Odyssey by Homer.
The Cthulu mythos has many old forgotten gods and demons to where the pictural seems to be like that of old sea creatures, or alien figuresl.
The Odyssey depicts the devil as having deep sunken hollow eyes, a kane, a hat and a very deep shrill baratone voice. As depicted in the movie "Oh brother where art though". Save for using sun glasses as the sunken hollow eyes.
My vision would have to be a man probably adapting to the times just as you see with vampires perhaps with a short haircut, a suit and a muscler build though only standing about 5'5 which i think is tall for men if you go far back in history
Which seems to be a bit of a fit for the man from the movie "Oh brother, Where Art Thou". Save for a none vampiresque Status.
Well i think he would have different looks to be able to fit into different situations
I think just like God has many faces the devil could take many forms too.
Well if god has many faces how would he create us all in his own image "meaning man"
Thus would bring out a very differant discussion concerning the accusation "man made god"...Though as we keep to our regular discussion concerning the many faces of the "devil", I agree that in comes with certain situations as well as environments partaining to its image in general.
The eyes see what they wish to see, thus the perception of the mind...The eye of the beholder. Or the beerholder in the case of the drunk.
Going with the "all Gods are one God" theory here. Many cultures have different Gods/Goddesses with differnt names or appearances. So its can be the same with the devil, or dark lord. There is many names for him/her and looks too.
According to the bible Satan was the most beautiful being in the heavens, second only to God, so whatever Satan looks like, it is a most pleasing sight. I have always believed that Satan is a womn, and not a male figure at all
The all gods theory seems very prominent with image and dress response. Who is to say they are actually looking at the "devil" anywho? Perception carries on a mind of its own.
In regards to the beautiful "devil" theory, like so many have forgotten about, or not learned about...This beautiful image of the "devil" is not programed for a reason...Being, that society wishes to condition the thoughts of negativity, and not goodness...Thus, nowadays, the "devil" is depicted as a dirty discustion vagrant, a red serpant like being, or any other negatively influenced creature.
Have never thought about this before you and your friends have interesting discussions. *smiles* Your post has made me start to think exactly what image i might think of when i think of Satan. There are many possibilities it seems.
nowadays satan is depicted as a human at least in hollywood such like bedazzled sticking with the beauiful women theory, Or there is the devils advocate which happens to be my favorite one Al Pacino not the most atrractive person but in a all white suit "purity"
The "bedazzled" representation is a perfect example of the sexuality that the "devil" may precipitate in to the minds eye. Would you rather have a beautiful woman standing in front of you, or an authoritive male presence?
Well ofcourse being a male I would want a beautiful women but there a women out there that would like to have a authoritive male.
Continued off my last post:
Then again there is men that look for a father figure in there lives perhaps becuase daddy left them as a child
Very good example...The fatherly devil form. I would think that many individuals suffice to say, skeletor looking creations like the cartoon "He-man" would work as well. But as society is conditioned to look at the norm, would depictions take on extreme forms?
or maybe he has no image just a voice or maybe black cloud even
I think the point of the image justification would be to instill either a fear, or a loathing for this deity...To the point of outcasting from "god" so to speak...As to not wanting any part of the evil presents that is shown.
I too think that satan"s image would change the person s/he is trying to get. More like the Hurley's image in her movie. Changes her apperance to fit in with the everyday Joe
being raised in the church, Satan was an angel originally... I have always pictured him as such... even though he's seen as demonic by nature he once was in the presences of the Divine....
well as for god having different faces he has only one as far as the Christian religion goes.. LOL.Yet, as far as other beliefs then GOD has many different faces for them who have different beliefs, such as Mythology and Wiccan someothers .... I mean like Satanism LOL well we know that their God is of course Satan, so to me evil is Satan and therefore he does come in many different faces and forms , trying to persuade you to do his bidding even human forms ...I am not disrespecting any religion either ... just an observations..
Probably beyond comprehension. There is no good and evil only energy. Well thats my take on it anyway.
the man that look like a red bull that stand upright is the common image that the tv uses.
Haha, because of my synesthesia, "Satan" is surprisingly yellow.
(How I percieve the word, "SATAN")
SATAN
Is that not fun? :D
The devil i think has adapted to the image of humans for the form it takes comes in many ways to do what is needed. the artist form of the devil is a bases of what evil is to represent.. drawn by humans. all i have to say
Satan would be beautiful and able to change his appearance. Currently, I think he'd be a fashion designer with a line of pointy-toed heels which squeeze women's feet into unrecognizable shapes.
I was thinking about it a little after my last post, and interestingly enough, "Lucifer" is a very pretty name that colors give a vision of the morning dawn, which is what he was supposedly named for. (okay, okay, morning star, but close enough).
How I perceive the word 'Lucifer'"
Lucifer
We were told that Lucifer was the most beautiful of all angels. That never did change. He also was never on this planet - ever. Satan was nothing but a go between or messenger so who really cares what he looks like. And as for the Devil, you would be better to guess what Santa "really" look like. Only the arrogant gets these three confuse and say they are all the same.
well concidering that Lucifer (Satan) was an angel of God and when he started the great war wanting to take over (this is pre-Adam & Eve) God sent him to to the bellows of Hades anyway he twisting and contored what he truly looked like but Lucifer was the most beautiful angel in heaven
BillyTheJust: How can you be sure Satan/Lucifer/Devil are not the one in the same in general? I'd just like a source or an article I can look to to get that information, as I've been under the impression for some time now that the entities of Lucifer, Satan, and the Devil are all the same and based in being the embodiments of all that's evil.
The Devil conception is fairly easy to find out since it was created by Mother Church on a fear- based belief system. One thing after another was added. One of the latter being the goat legs from the god Pan. Now this nonsense that he can be anything, even your emotions and thoughts! One of the earlier forms came from the Babylonians gods. Simple research will give the answers you seek on this.
As for Lucifer, that name is older than dirt - literally. So there are many stories. From the morning star, Venus, to the brightest angel. It may even be the same. Who really nows? But the fallen angel story is that he lead a rebellion in Heaven, and not the first one, btw. It was well known because many of the Planetary Princes followed him which never happened before. One of the reasons why JC came down, to deal with our Planetary Prince, and it was not Satan. another story. Anyways, Lucifer started the rebellion because he wanted Michael to run things and didn't see what the big fuss was about this new planet that was waaay out of the way. Yes, Earth. Lucifer got in trouble because he was impatient, nothing more. And it was taken care of quickly enough. Long story. Satan was Lucifer's Lieutenant and traveled between Heaven and Earth dealing with the Planetary Prince at that time. Nothing more. Boring part, I know. The confusion in the bible was to put all the pieces together but as you know, very little was really known to these people. The word "sataan" that meant "chaos" was mixed with Satan. Lucifer got lost somewhere as did the planetary prince which didn't reappear until JC was called the title. Very few even today know what happens behind the veil, less understand it. Another reason why JC's teachings about the Kingdom is no longer taught. It's better to just focus on clarity and Love than to try to understand what is really happening. I know how mussy that may sound but if you don't know all this .. you're not meant to. Don't loose your own path.
And as for really be sure, you need to learn to loose the duality concept. No easy task. Doesn't matter if it hot or cold nor good or evil. No such thing. It merely IS. The "I AM" awareness can be learned.
I actually have a good article posted in my journals about satanism.
Satanist do not believe in satan as an individual. The only people that have given him some sort of image are the christians. There is a very complex theory and belief system behind the Satanist and I would recommend doing some reading from "offical sites" of some of the Churchs of Satan.
I believe he has the image of a man or woman whatever the situation calls for.
i believe that Satan is a beautiful being.i believe Satan is niether man nor woman, but when the situation calls for someone,Satan can take the image of either man or woman.
The Bible denotes Lucifer as being the head of all the Angels who was beautiful beyond compare.
I imagine him being as beautiful as before, but in a sort of angry, bitter way.
WOW......
I must say that this has been interesting to read to say the least.
I've always known Lucifer, Satan, and the Devil to be one entity.
Im sure he/she looks like something that is familiar to you personally. Something/one that you are familiar with.
I think I've mentioned that I find the image of Satan as a deal maker the most appealing. That depiction that I always felt was almost uniquely American with the crossroads and the character of "Scratch".
But Nick Cave did a fantastic description of the devil in his song Red Right Hand.
He is supposedly a fallen angel, so I wonder what an angel would appear to look like? And would the looks change once you are cast out?
ha I think satan can be anything he wants to be. I don't think he has to be the one picture that everybody has made him out to be. He could look like me and you.
Satans image may be however you may imagine. My favourite however is how the Prince of Darkness is portrayed by Robert DeNiro as Luis Cyphere in the movie "Angel Heart".
Honestly i think satan can look like anything he want to look like. how do you think he is able to get ppl to do things?
Why do we become so fixated that god or satan must be male, in the days when the legends were made society was usually male dominated so male figures would be described, but not need be such in reality
technically, the person most people are referring to on this thread is lucifier. WHO ISNT EVIL OR A FALLEN ANGEL!! He is considered the left (I honestly can't remember) hand of the Christian God. He is the hand of justice and could be compared to the Egyptian god Ammut.
Beg to differ...Lu-ci-fer or "Angel" of Light. The left hand of god, cast out by god as he wished for his own kingdom. The rest is known.
@Soulshroude: Where did you get the impression that Homer described Satan anywhere. He didn't even know that concept.
Or are you talking about another Homer? someone from Hollywood maybe?
~Sarras~ I was actually making a relation to the devil depiction from the movie: Oh Brother Where Art Thou, which was loosely based on Homer's Odyssey.
In the same way that a group of people who witness an accident can all 'see' the accident happened in a slightly different way.....maybe that's how we 'see' satan.
If he/she/it exists, I personally would like to 'see' him as Al Pacino.
*Chuckles* I don't know...Monkey Bones with a Scottish accent seems a bit more suitable for my tastes.
He would be the darkest light , an image within mans soul , the light leading the way to the passions deemed forbiden by the teachings of mortal man.
Ah, yes..The forbidden fruits. Deemed taboo by a close minded side of society.
The bible says that the devil is the most beautiful creature other than god.... I am not christian, but that has stuck with me through the years and that is what I think of him/her.

Of course, the coldest region of hell, being blue flame...Correct me if I am wrong, would mean that hell hath frozen over?
Lucifier is still an angel of god if you read the copies of the oldest hebrew bibles. Throughout the ages christianity changed the image of Hell, Sin, and Lucifier into the burning antigood Satan ruling persona. It's like your mom telling you the boogie man is going to get you if you dont go to sleep or any of the grims fairytales. In order for the church to control the masses they created these mythos or something to that extent. i havent studied it in a while so my memory is a little rusty. Satanist dont believe in satan and Lucifier isnt evil. people should really read something other than the bible. you might be surprised at the changes man has done to its originality.
LOL It seems that BillytheJust has been the most accurate thus far. Sorry But Lucifer, Satan, and the Devil are not all three the same being. LOL
As for what they look like.....Sell one your soul and find out. LOL
here is the connection to homer...
Christian tradition of a literal fall from heaven drew upon the Homeric tradition, familiar to many.
"the whole day long I was carried headlong, and at sunset I fell in Lemnos, and but little life was in me" Iliad
Homer's description of the parallel supernatural fall relates the fall of Hephaestus from Olympus in the Iliad I:591ff; the fall of the Titans was similarly described by Hesiod. Through popular epitomes these traditions were drawn upon by Christian authors embellishing the fall of Lucifer.[citation needed]
St. Jerome, with the Septuagint close at hand and a general familiarity with the pagan poetic traditions, translated Heylel as Lucifer in the Vulgate. This may also have been done as a pointed jab at a bishop Saint Lucifer, a contemporary of Jerome who argued against forgiving those condemned of the Arian heresy, but had returned to catholic Christianity. Much of Christian tradition also draws on interpretations of Revelation 12:9 ("He was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is also called the Devil and Satan"; see also 12:4 and 12:7) in equating the ancient serpent with the serpent in the Garden of Eden and the fallen star, Lucifer, with Satan. Accordingly, Tertullian (Contra Marrionem, v. 11, 17), Origen (Ezekiel Opera, iii. 356), and others, identify Lucifer with Satan.
In the fully-developed Christian tradition, Jerome's Vulgate translation of Isaiah 14:12 has made Lucifer the name of the principal fallen angel, who must lament the loss of his original glory as the morning star. This image at last defines the character of Satan, where the Church Fathers had maintained that lucifer was not the proper name of the Devil, and that it referred rather to the state from which he had fallen; St. Jerome gave it Biblical authority when he transformed it into Satan's proper name.
more goodness....
I ronic indeed. For some reason too much gets lost in translations of ancient texts. And too many put whole faiths into such mistakes that they fail to see the truth of reason.
Thank You for the very informative post.
I don't think he looks like anything. I don't think he is a being. In my Theological studies, I have come to the conclusion that Satan, (many times found in lower case) is simply and adjective.
Jews do not believe in the concept of Satan. It came way later. There was no fall of Lucifer, that passage in Isaiah refers to a Babylonian King. Pharaoh's were always called 'The Morning Star'. Do some research :)
Read the WHOLE package there in Isaiah, folks. And anyone who has a commentary or footnotes in their Bible will find that's not about 'Satan'.
You have to get more than a couple sentences to gather a complete, factual thought.
I guess i would say that he can take many forms, he would take any form that is a fear in any of us.
My depiction of Satan besides the red demon is an older man who has not adjusted to the times. Maybe a cape or pioneer clothing....?
i watch a movie that had him as a human male with black tar like coming off his hands
The dark one is your lover on the darkest of nights. He whispers desperate nothingness into your ear and a random tear falls to the earth and no life will grow from that spot ever again.
He is there when death finally takes you, dressed as an angel of light, but his smile freezes your heart for the final time and you fade away to nothingness only to discover the heaven you seek is not really there.
He is the calling in the night and is the road companion of those who walk in the dark streets alone.
His wings of dark are the comforting force that takes away all emotion of sadness and leaves only vengeance.
He is in possession of the person who has gone mad and you can see him in their eyes.
He is the darkest side of despair, the one that cackles at the futility of life and you can hear his laughter in countless suicide notes. His voice is the last thing that issues from the dead as a desperate cackle.
Yes, he is the one who brings knowledge to the world. He was damned for showing men that there is darkness in the world. For at that point, the one god was required to let man choose for himself between the two.
He is the spoiler of the great creation and engineers the destruction of all to spite his dark fate.
Those of us who join him carry the name of marplot, incendiary, and firebrand, among others...
But ever is the dark one mankind's greatest love, for he opened the eyes of the first man and woman to the idea of choice. In mankind's infancy, he gave us the most dangerous gift of all: the power to live outside the rules. And the freedom to choose as he once chose.
I would have to agree with the many others on this. There can be many different faces to Satan. Seems to me he would appear as whatever one might fear most in their eyes. (Not sure if that made sense)
Hmmmm......I've seen demonic entities and their HIDEOUS, but for some reason AMAZINGLY beautiful.
And others are GORGEOUS.
But Satan himself......I think is w/e you percieve him to be and he will come to you that way then until you die........and if you go to hell you'll really know.
I do not worship Satan or condone him in anyway.
Although I use to.
Sorry times when knowledge is tried to be shown by copying Wikipedia-articles.
BTW, the phrase [citation needed] is usually a dead give away.
Before building your arguments solely on wikipedia or other freely editable source, how about a couple of good books?
For those who can read german I'd suggest:

That also or if you can get a hold of Aleister Crowley's works or journals.
Or information on his stay at Baleskin House or what beings he left behid there.
i use multiple sources and wiki when it is conviently backed by other research. I am sorry if you don't understand the concept or material I presented. If you doubt the material, please post something you have read that contradicts the information posted.
I like the Lucifer from tenacious d and the pick of destiny
satanism is a completely different subject than the topic now being discussed. there is no comparison.
Satan came from Heaven and was cast out. He is the same as all angels.
We r getting a bit off subject
Although we r hitting sum good points n effort 2 answer this question
Agreed - regardless of the origins of Satan (or the devil if you feel them to be the same) and the myriad of articles that would back up this belief or that, it's an opinion being asked for and a personal one at that of what you think the incarnation of Satan would look like.
