There are things that are claimed to kill or deter a vampire, werewolf, witch and so forth. What is Fact and what is Fiction to this.
In lore the stake to the heart seemed to keep the vampire from rising, yet in modern portral the spike ashes the vampire.
Your basic premise of the question is flawed.
Anyone in modern 'real living vampire' society will tell you that the same things that kill 'humans', will kill a vampire. And those things which deter a vampire in fiction, don't seem to have effect in 'real life'.
In fiction, there are a number of standard methods and a few exotic ones. For the purposes of this thread, I would suggest that people stick to those listed in works of vampire fiction, since there can really be no 'fact' other than the obvious.
hmmm well everything changes in every story and surely vampires would be different fromhumans in some ways so not everything that kills humans would kill them...
would it?...
there are many aspects to that question. but as to things that are fact or fiction there are many fact and fiction to life in its self.
well tome who can say it is fact or fiction for real.... I mean unless it can be proven asbolutely one way or another, Or you experience it first hand ... then who is to say what is real and what is not real.... just my outlook on it, that anything is the possible....
I believe garlic, a crucifix, holy water, and sun light are all fiction. The stake through the heart is quite obviously fact
The myth vampires is the old stake in the heart, so that they may not get up, it traps them in their coffin.
Crosses and holy relics deter them.
modern day vamps..personally I rather like crosses and the like.
Both are totally, totally different.Of course one is make believe and well..then you have folks like me*toothy grin*
I am guessing that the steak through the heart is a perminent thing. And I see it has been said a few times here already. So I am just going to say I hear that silver is bad for werewolves.
well there is that the Silver Bullet, the Holy water, the stake in the heart, sunlight, I mean The List goes on and on yet do we know if any is truely fact or fiction... Yet, in the sane world we do believe that most part is fiction and fantasy.
I agree with Stabb, as this question is very well...Flawed.
Since society really has no proof that any method works for any "real" creatures of the night...Vamps, were, witch. Then how would society know which method works for which creature.
Mainly, fire will kill anything, as will stakes and beheading. These three methods either individually used or grouped, will be my choices of the destruction ultimately.
There once was a vampire named Pete
Who had a great craving for meat;
But someone got smart ~~
Put a steak through his heart ~~
And ruined his favorite treat.
Lmao...couldn't resist the "steak through the heart" thing....
A hunter orders dinner, the waiter asks how he would like his stake..."Bloody" was the reply.
Anywho, back on topic...Since no factual evidence has been given, we can only presume that this thread is based on pure fiction.
Tee hee, I found this here......https://www.vampirerave.com/post.php
Look for a hole above a grave. Sometimes vampires have to dig their way out.
Step2 Scatter salt on the floor in the vampire's latest victim's room. Help the vampire lead you right to his or her tomb.
Step3 Use garlic, hawthorn branches, or a cross to trap your vampire in a corner. Protect yourself from revenge by making a cross of tar on your front door.
Step4 Dig the vampire up on a Friday. According to the early Greeks, that's when a vampire is weakest. Take advantage of the day when vampires can't come out to play.
Step5 Pound iron stakes through his coffin and straight into the ground if you catch him at rest.
Step6 Bury his body under running water - vampires can't stand it.
Step7 Fire a silver bullet blessed by a priest into his heart.
Step8 Drive an aspen, ash or white thorn stake through his heart with a single blow if you want to make a lasting impression.
Step9 Pour boiling water, boiling oil or holy water into his grave.
Step10 Cremate his body or make a paste from his flesh for closure. Then sit down and feast on the beast.
Well the tradition is holy water and a stake through the heart... but personally I think that the fact is simply anything that can kill a human can kill a vampire.
That's hard to say. No matter where you look it up, it is told differently. The lore of these creatures changes through the years. What was said to once kill them, no longer applies according to hollywood and new lore. I guess it depends on where you look it up. I'm pretty sure beheading would do it for all of those though. Vampires, werewolves and witches would all need their head to survive, so I'm going with beheading for all of them.
I'm guessing things such as sun and stakes are fiction, yet decapitating the corpse is fact.
I think it would all depend on what sort of vampires you are talking about in the first place or from what literary piece/movie/culture. When you juxtapose the different portrayals and accounts of vampires, you would find that most of them contradict the other. There have many different and interesting twists to the vampire lore as it has existed through the ages, from creature of the night susceptible to daylight (Nosferatu) to the romanticized version that we have flourishing at present.
hollywood is always changing the way vampires can be killed. sunlight, stake through the heart, beheading and even now silver. they have made them daywalkers now meaning they can be in the sunlight but not for long periods of time cause it will weaken them. silver stakes through the heart will only paralyze them now you have to behead them. Nobody really knows for sure. I guess if you ever meet one and wanna kill pick a method and see if it works. lol
Fact and Fiction is merely opinion, my fact may be your fiction, where as some one else may even have a different sight than us making our opinions fiction to them where as they are fact to us. In general though... if it bleeds it can die... A fairly safe bet for most cases.
i would think the Holy water would be the main kicker for a Vampire....and ofcourse the steak.....*shrugs*
holy water is initself a myth. it is frequently used when priests try to bless a house to rid it of ghosts - and rarely has any effect.
i suppose holy water will only be truly holy if the priest who blessed it was truly holy himself, and not just another hypocritical child molester. i dare say there may nbe one or two out there.
in old days crosses were feared by vampires in present times not all vapires are afraid of crosses.
Crosses? Probably a myth? Holy water, I would agree about it being a myth. Unless if the priest was holy himself. heh. But yes, a steak to the heart will kill anything. Silver, I won't touch that subject. heh. But garlic, I think that is just myth....
Just thought I would voice in my opinion.....
Who knows who is right or wrong? It is a tough subject to say what is myth or real.
it was widely beleived in many cultures that all demonic beings - including vampires - could be scared off by loud noises and bells. this is why they ring bells at weddings (to drive away bad luck and harmful spirits ) and why crackerjacks were used in celebrations and festivals. so presumably, you will never meet a true vampire at a motorhead or hawkwind concert.
facts and fiction have become twisted with each culture and each belief that it simpley just is not that simple to say garlic or holy water decapitation bells brass keys cars stakes wolfbane silver bullets crusifix's its all gonna work in fiction if we want it to but in fact just depends on what the facts are
Well in most fictional vampire stories, the vampire can be burned with holy water or sunlight to the point of death. A cross is a detterant and stake throught the heart is instant immortal death!
Salt is a myth I like it in my blood lol
Ummmm silver bullets hurt
Variations in fiction are curious to me, the Lit. progression of vampires, making them more imposing
in the mind of the reader or the person hearing the tale is worth studying. The degrees of improvement, making a vampire more immortal, and when such variations appeared in fiction and lore, shows us what social and other factors did to effect the genre. Movies circumventing copy writes had a hand in a lot of revisions of vampires.
Creating the next sensation in a well covered genre, like annn Rice did, is something that can almost be predicted in cycles. How long until that ghost story with the worn out prop scare works depends on creative variations. Old Hocus pocus fades more each time it is done. There is nothing new under the sun, variation still applies.
Vampire. According to legend, to kill a werewolf, it must be shot with a silver bullet fired by a loved one.
To really kill a vampire, you must used a stake through the heart, then decapitate it, then place it in a coffin with the head down, and the body up. Surround the body with bird seed (it cannot leave the coffin unless it counts every one), bury it, and finally scatter rose thorns around the grave. Or you can use Bloombergs kit seen here - http://news.softpedia.com/news/19th-Century-Vampire-Hunting-Kit-For-Sale-51795.shtml
and slay Vampires & Werewolves that way VV
So very true! Here's one from my 'imagesinwords' journal a couple days ago:
They need blood to survive.
If they are injured, giving them blood may replenish them and keep them from dying.
Sun damages them.
Garlic, although tasty, may repell them.
You usually need to invite them in, in order for them to have access to your home.
Crosses keep some of them away.
A stake through the heart or a lopping off of the old head is a sure killer.
They like the night life, they like to boogey.
They just want to be loved, is that so wrong?
People just don't understand them.
They need energy from people in order to feel healthy. Without it, they feel sick.
They usually can't see an honest reflection in a mirror.
A certain amount of silver in their system is deadly.
Who are these beings exactly? They are human beings :)
If you look at most of the deterants and killers in general fiction they all can be drawn back to faith, generaly in God. And so it is that which is said to prevent kill or what ever the so... If we look today at vampires, we must at first determine what we are considering vampires are we thinking of Phychic vamps and Sangs and the likes or a literal version of a fictional vampire.
If we are thinking sangs and Psys then on this I take the stance that these would be humans but have a energetic problem which leads to this behaviour and needs.
So we would be talking about stopping something which is human with faith in God.
Here lies the problem, generaly speaking Psy and Sang vamps will not feed, at least not feed in a noticable manner ( refering to Psys here), unless they have permission and so Faith in god has little to do with it because I am sure there are donners who are religious etc
Fact, there is nothing that can kill a Vampire. Fiction, hollywood create the garlic, the cross, the bible, and the stake. But, like I said, a vampire keep living, generation after generation. They lived between the mortal's world as an observer of this crazy life.
reality: vampires can be killed as easily as a human.
fiction: sunlight, garlic, silver, and stakes or fire take a vampire "down".
Things like decapitation and a stake through the heart seem obvious to me...Being as that would kill anyone..
Yes the original mythos was that the stake paralyzed the vampire, the only true ways were fire and sunlight.
considering vampires and werewolves and "witches" as most people think of them are fiction, i would say everything to kill them is fiction
I'd have to disagree, PostInsanity. ;]
Decapitation can refer just to having limbs cut off. Wouldn't neccessarily kill someone.
yes - removal of the head is a permanent death for anybody/anything. LOL!
The lethal danger from silver never made any sense to me until I saw "Dracula 2000"...then it made more sense. It gave a reason for the dislike/fear of silver. Great concept.
