I just saw a show on tv that had a study of people on their death beds the beds all had scales under them as the people being tested died the scale would drop weight of about 0.3 1/4 lbs .... what I what to know from my fellow VR friends here is what do you think about this? i think that our whole awareness is in that weight and that this has to be proof that we have another existence that these bodies we use are merely shells
so they deleted the one i posted on lol
ok
when you die some loss if noticed 21 onces i do think ... just normal
Actually Lav I think what she stated in the topic is the more accurate weight.
In a way it could be air loss from your lungs and other parts.
i would like to think i relayed accurate info giggles but i make mistakes i dont mind being corrected.
I am not sure that a soul would weigh anthing but I do know that a body when it expires releases gasses from it...so I would think this would be the scientific reason for the body losing weight after death.
I think that it would be the loss of air in our lungs like someone else said.
-Juggalette givin MMFWCL
From what I have read there is indeed a loss of weight unrelated to breath etc. I remember seeing a thread like this many months ago and I'm trying to remember how I replied to it.
But make no mistake about it there is a loss of weight due to death.
I could be wrong, but it seems to me like I remember reading somewhere, at some point, that when we die, we have an uncontrolable bowel movement, and possibly urinate as well.
Could this have something to do with the weight lost during death?
i have worked around hospitals most my life as a aide and grew up with my mother who was a great doctor, i know the body does release air from the lungs and gases and such but not all at once and that is why sometimes you see bloating
That would seem to make sense but if the scale is under the bed then the weight would still be there just not in the same location. Sorry if this sounds crude but just making a statement is all.
what would be your reason for the relocation of the weight ? just curious
A body when it dies eliminates the waste inside of it...so if the studies done where the scale was under the bed...the weight of the waste from the body would still be on the bed...so that would not change the weight on the scales.
Ah, yes. You're right. With the scale being underneath the bed, of course the weight would still be accounted for with the elimination of waste. Obviously, I wasn't thinking that sucker all the way through, heh. :)
The only other thing I can think of then would be gases and air. But would these things add up to being the amount of weight mentioned?
I am guessing a medical professional would be the one who had the most accurate answers for this kind of question. I wonder if it has been a medical study or could be found in a medical journal or even a link on the web?
Honestly I believe we have a lot of gases in us and when we die all air stops going inside us, because we stop breathing.
Here is some info on this...

i believe that souls do have weight and that when we leave the body it does lose weight

Could be that last bowel evacuation.... er...
...I don't know... probably just air loss.
it could be air loss or los of body fluids or a range of other thing.... but all that matters is what you believe i believe that it is an entity that resides within
We would like to think its when our soul is leaving our bodies, but I think its more of the air and gasses leaving the body
The weight loss is less than that of a dime.I feel it has nothing to do with the soul, which,in my mind, would be weightless..but whos to say ?
Wow how many times can ya read "it's just gas" lol.
Oceanne- if this real loss of weight is indeed the soul, and the soul is energy, and energy can have mass....see where I'm going.
All the reading on this subject I have done points to a genuine loss of weight, albeit small. It has nothing to do with breath or gas or bowl's emptying themselves yadda yadda. That can all be measured and generally weighs more than the amount mentioned.
I've always liked this topic and hope a to see some more well written replies to it.
the weight you lose when you die is probably gas from the decay of the body the soul isn't something that could be measured.
I have heard of this, yet many scientist believe in the organs losing oxygen and shrinking from lack of blood. I do believ that the soul diminishes or escapes and some loss will be reported if minimal
"Oceanne- if this real loss of weight is indeed the soul, and the soul is energy, and energy can have mass....see where I'm going."
I knew you would get me for this one, and was secretly was hoping you would,Zav.And I think about that side if it too.Just as much.Especially because of the minute weight.... you know its a combo,so the percentage of the "soul weight"would be less....more amazing
but you know me,I lay out every side of it and then some, even if I dont fully believe it.You gotta lay all the aspects out and let everyone take it from there on their own..and hopefully get in a good disscussion along the way.Hell,my mind changes so much anyway, cause of new stuff, or revision of old due to technology etc...,Im afraid to form a hard opinion on any of it yet..Well all except the resonance thing.
lol you guys keep saying about loss of gases and air and such but we are talking split second of death the air you loss frm the body and gas loss dont happen instantly and all at once for that matter this is a measured amount over and over no matter how large the person or small the person there is another factor to concider
But at the time of death the lungs expell the air , and the body begins within 4 minutes of death to decay. Sorry worked at a morgue for some time. Do not get me wrong i do believe that we do have a soul, more of energy of the body and the weight would not regester for the energy loss. I think alot of factors do come into play. Wether the soul or the decay of the body. I have not been in the space of a sudden death where they were on a scale, usaully it takes 20 minutes ot and hour before a body does hit the morgue. And for someone to put a scale under a body at the moment of death to me is highly irregular. sorry my thoughts and my feelings i shall take the blame for those who find this offence of.
There have been cases where people had scales in their bed at the time of death for such purpose as to answer this question.
I think the point the author and I are trying to make is this "We know the body losses weight due to gasses and other things, who cares. The question is does the soul have weight, why and wouldn't the body loose weight after death due to the soul leaving?"
On this regards Xzavier i donot think myself the soul has weight, for it is in my opion the energy of the body. soul having weight would be harder to expell and a pepple or small nickel would be clearly shown somewhere if leaving.
But why does the soul have to leave the body at all? Perhaps it doesn't always, and where does it go? I don't believe in heaven or hell myself, maybe its in limbo....but I diverse.......
I am figuring when a person dies it isn't the soul that weighs anything.. it is most likely body fluids or gasses expelling from the body at the time of death.
21 grams. That is what they say the soul weighs. Have you seen the movie, called, 21 grams? It's a great and intense movie.
it might just be natural but then I always thought when you die your body became heavier the when you where alive.
And a soul isnt natural? I am having a bit of a time understanding your statement..sorry.
The bowls relax, hence release when you die. But I don't thats the reason. I can't honestly say why we lose weight, but I'm pretty soul that souls don't weigh anything
If the soul is energy, which I think it is, energy can be measured because energy has mass, so that very well could account for the loss of grams immediantly after death.
I originally wasn't thinking clearly through this, because I, too, thought that it could be accounted for by the elimination of waste. However, despite the elimination of the body waste, it is still on the scale. It's no longer in the body, yes, but it is still on the bed.
Also, with gases, it is not an immediate release. It takes some time, and this weight loss, as I understand it, is immediantly after death. So gasses couldn't be the reason either.
Vespers- Thank you! Finally someone with a clear thought lol
See guys-NOT GASSES OR WASTE :)
Energy does have mass and mass can be measured.
good logical point yet energy has mass, huh like air huh which has weight ok. OK
I do believ vesper did a great explanation of this. yet some will still be in aww and question.
The thing I am curious about now is if the grams lost are always consistent. Do they fluctuate?
If they do fluctuate, that would mean that some souls weigh more, or less than other souls. What would this imply?
From what I've heard the amount lost is always the same.
Ah, I see. So no fluctuations, even if minute, and small?
I need to look more into this. I had never heard of this phenomon prior to this thread.
I was also wondering if it is common practice to place a scale below the bed, or if it is something you need to request?
I am sure the scales placed below the bed was done for a study such as this...to see if the soul has any weight.
I like the idea of the fact that it does not vary in any of the test subjects so it does suggest that it is something that everyone has in common...so it would make sense to assume the soul does have weight. We do all have a soul....depending on your religious beliefs of course.
OK this is a old one. All was concidered including air in lungs & the air pressure on the body. The study was done in a sterile room. all was measured and accounted for except this little bit of weight. Some believe it is the soul.
While we are alive, we are full of hot air and food :)
Hot air serves to lighten us a little throughout. When you die, you lose the air altogether, or it grows colder and sinks.
With food, we are constantly eating it, using it for energy, and expelling it from our bodies. Your body averages at a mean weight where the food you take in and the amount you use is taken into effect. When you die, this process stops; the food in your stomach stays there.
Like a few others said, it could be that they've breathed their last breath and are ridding all of the oxygen from their bodies.
Or it could be the weight of the soul.
The origin of the 21-gram figure can be traced to Duncan MacDougall, a doctor working in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the early 1900s. MacDougall had a keen fascination with death and spent part of his career on an almost obsessive hunt for evidence of the soul. He thought that if humans had a soul, it must exist in the body as some kind of material. And that material must weigh something.

Take 21g idea with 0.0015mg of salt
thats a pretty cool thought in a way but what about the weight of the air we take in added w/ our actual weight that could also be the reason why the weight went down after the person died it's an interesting theory but closely looked in to would uncover a logical explanation as usual they'll never except the supernatrual at work with these things they'll go into it so deeply to try to proove otherwise that they'll start toalking about the weight of the adams in the air flow the weight of gasses in the air the weight of polution we breath in they'll never except that it could be supernatual. I think that stinks in a way but something very interesting to look into.
we know the weight is the same with each death 21 grams so if you look at that fact also knowing each persons lung capcity is differerant, ITS NOT LOSS OF AIR IN THE LUNGS PEOPLE nor is it voidance... what is the 21 grams?
i would say same at death as alive and this test gives us an idea that it does in fact exist
there are many reasons for this
1. when you die your body automatically lets go of any urine and feces held within the body
2. All air is pushed out
3. the soul leaves
so its kind of a mix of everything
1. when you die your body automatically lets go of any urine and feces held within the body
That I did not know.
I am curious to know how many test subjects there were and what their belief system was?
the waist is still on the bed so its still being wieghed
i cant remember how many test subjects they used or what thier beliefs were.
we are looking at subjects losrn 21 grams not 18 not 30 but always just 21 ... you would think size would come into this but it dont
This is mostly meant to bring a chuckle or two around the table.... But supposing if we eat a lot of soul food before we died... would that make our souls larger and give us a thinner corpse? Brings new meaning to the phrase "prettiest girl in the morgue?"
**The next person who talks about gasses and waste I'm gonna rate a 1 lol** That has been "put to bed" already.
There have been several experiments in which the measured conditions would only weigh the soul nothing else.
Again the soul is energy energy has mass thus weight therefore it can be measured.
I would say souls would have a general weight which is similar to everyone but has small changes per person.
I think it is air loss once you die...other stuff could be a cause but...i'm sure there is a easy logical reason for it..
Exactly what I am getting at....that is why I am wondering how many test subjects they were and what type of belief system did they have?
Was this a medical study or one done by a theologian (spelling)?
Is there a link that we can go to that has the actual study documented?
I know that the body loses weight when the body dies and it is caused from gases and fluid loss when the body expires... we lose all our body functions and then the urine and fecces all leave the body upon the expiration of the body.
as for the Soul having weight I am not sure and I myself do not feel we should weigh the soul for any reason.. I do believe it takes leave and moves on tho' LOl so just an opinion...
wow !! ok Xzavier I will take my 1 as said LOL I just posted and when I did I seen there where like 5 other posts were posted, and yours with the statement .. LOL *Runs to hide her profile LOL *HUGS* your a sweety you know it.. *Rhonda....
Dr. Duncan MacDougall in 1907 did the first study that I am aware of. Of course there are a lot of people who disagree or don't believe his findings...21gm.
WarriorinHell.....LOL...it does help to read the posts previously before posting...might save you some ratings...LOL!
If the bed tilted or weight was shifted on it , it could result in variations in the weight perceived by the scale .
ok...so if this were true then how can it be accounted for when the weight lost was the exact same amount each time?
LOL I did read, DeadlyDesires and none of the last few were there till after I posted LOL I do not have high speed ...I have dial up..slow one at that LOl and Xzavier 21gms..... so is that suppose to be the weight of the soul? I am curious is all and is it always the exact amt.?
its still on the bed it is still being measured come on my fellow VR friends i know you guys are open minded people lets hear more science
Do you happen to remember what tv station or the name of the show you are talking about. I would like to see this. I find it very interesting.
no i was just randomly flipping channels and fell on this expierament and was facinated by it
That is very interesting that it always comes up 21 grams. I would like to know more about this. I see now what you are saying after reading through all the posts and the waste and what not being on the bed while the scales are there. And how it is always the same never varies.
i know im checking out the movie called 21 grams as soon as i can find it thanks for posting it as some info to check on ib regaurds to topic
The only thing I can think of that would be expelled from the body which cannot rest on the 'bed-scale' would be water. It gets expelled as we breathe and upon death, the body continues to release a certain amount.
I doubt it is air, as it would have almost no weight. If it is excrement, that would rest on the table, not reducing the weight.
I could also wonder if weight and dead-weight are different somehow. Hmmm.
There's no proof to the existence of souls so I doubt it's that. I myself believe it's the water or whatever that leaves the body.
The whole expelling water and air seems to make the most logical sense to most...however...everyone has a different lung capacity and we all have varying amounts of water in our bodies...so how could it possibly be one of those if the total loss is always 21 grams? What else could it be with varying ages, weights, etc..would cause a consistent and common weight loss with all the subjects?
I consider that what is spiritual is have no weight, only material has a weight.
It is basic logic.
Since what is spiritual is from another realm therefore it can not be calculate, weight in our realm, the livng one.
VampireYuri-
What if the spirit/soul (whichever terminology you use) is energy? Energy has mass, and mass can be measured. If the soul is indeed energy, and we have no proof that it isn't, than doesn't it make sense that it would then have weight?
well vespers makes sense.. it would have to be energy cause everything else would cause different amt with each person.... ok I get it and this is very interesting.. :)
Enjoy learning and broading my mind here on VR. :)
I agree with whoever posted the forum. I think that our bodies are just a cover to what is really inside us. Well, you know what I mean. Our souls.
well I believe that energy is the answer to this whole delimena... I could be wrong yet energy becomes a gas mass and can evaporate or expell from the body.....
i believe it is energy that leaves the body that makes the body lighter.
