This just came to my head..

Can someone dream of falling asleep and having a dream? If so, how would they wake up from both of the dreams?

Hmm... I actually did that once.
Or I was in another dream, in my dream, from the start and then I woke up in the dream. I can't remember what the dream was about other than that though, but I had that weird feeling when I woke up; the feeling that I wasn't really material or something.
Wow, that sounded dopey, but it was how it was :S

"The great Taoist master Chuang Tzu once dreamt that he was a butterfly fluttering here and there. In the dream he had no awareness of his individuality as a person. He was only a butterfly. Suddenly, he awoke and found himself laying there, a person once again. But then he thought to himself, "Was I before a man who dreamt about being a butterfly, or am I now a butterfly who dreams about being a man?"

That is so cool, FireSerpent.

I often dream in my dreams. That is, the person in my dream --- who is me and yet not me, exactly --- dreams. Sometimes, the dream they are having is identifiable because I've dreamed it before or there are elements of me or events in my life that I recognize.

Also, I've had adventure dreams where I remind myself in my dream that it's just a dream . . . so enjoy it.

a lot of people say that time passes differently in dreams so if you think about it. You can not really be sure your not dreaming. Most people think that you can not die in your dreams because you will die in real life and I am sure it could happen. Fear can kill you.

I have had this dreaming of dreaming but I seemed to know it at the time, rather like lucid dreams, where I knew what was happening and could control it somewhat.

No, I mean literally. You go to sleep and dream about you actually going to sleep and dreaming. I'm not talking about figurative dream dreaming, but actual stuff. Thanks for that note, though, FS, that's pretty awesome.

And if one can really dream in dreams, does that eliminate the "dreams are your thoughts" theory?

I had that kind of dream.
I awaked from both in the same time, when an external stimul was powerful enough.

Well to the question above, I do not see why it would blow the theory?, I mean who is to say that when we have a dream within a dream, does not mean they are not still our thoughts taken to another level... I feel that they are, I could be wrong yet my thoughts on it.

I wouldn't see why not. We dream of all sorts of things, so it is possible. I have a dream book that I just looked through, and it does not say anything about dreaming of dreaming... Hmmm.

Dreaming of dreams?

I think anyone with any amount of creativity could do this, although I think when they wake up, most people don't remember what they dream about anyway...

Creativity I don't think has anything to do with it really although that might deal with the subject matter of the dream. Lucid dreaming is a certain level of dreaming and most who dream in color, have sensory experiences are having lucid dreams. This is actually sort of rare according to a teacher I had at college. I have most always dreamt this way. I have dreamed I was sleeping and dreaming but we don't understand it because it is another state of consciousness. There the rules are different.

"In a night, or in a day,

In a vision, or in none,

Is it therefore the less gone?

All that we see or seem

Is but a dream within a dream."

There's a thought. Personally, I think anything is possible when one is dreaming. I've had dreams where I was aware that I was only dreaming, but I don't think I've ever had one where I dreamed.

I have had many circular dreams. They can be a little confusing, but they are always fun. You can train yourself to control you dreams. Remember that a dream is an unfinished thought or a wish/desire. If you think along those lines, with practice, you should be able to be in complete control of your dreams, includeing the ability to wake from a dream, if the dream becomes to intense or confusing.

I did not remember any dream I alseep,

ButI tell oyu my one lucid dream here in which I had awareness of I am asleep.

That Dream was 4 am and in my mind it struck that i must g to meet my cousin brother at his factory. I found myself down that industrial estate. that time no one was there to guard the premises as well as those three building. I was aware of the darkness and I am in the dream. gave a spin to myself as I know to remain in the dream dedired time, we have to give spinning to our body and that boost our subconscious remain much time in the same state.

there I searched if any guard in the premises coz i wished to use lift.

I entered that building. went upstairs walking. the light bld were dim light. no one was there. and when iturned to the door of cousins factory, there was shutter shut down. I had to wait for they come to open the building. I entered the factory it was empty. then i came out and started waiting outside. on the terrace on the same floor, in my young age I played a lot there on the terrace with my nephew.

I waited hardly 20-25 minutes, the vacuum started growing and pulling to me otherside of the floor to the last factory shutter of oter company. it was shut down too. but vacuum started pulling into that one.I tried to stop that and remain standing and awaiting for my brother's staff to come and open the factory. but that vacuum was very strong now and pullingme very strongly. Now I had to leave due to that. I started running away from that down the stairs and jumped to other side stairs at least 10 stairs down and next jump i was out of the factory two floors down on the ground out side. there I saw police man was there waiting for me. he asked me to come with him. I went with him to next building in its ground floor in the canteen place they were formed the police boothpost. I surprised at that cz in hte day time it was used as canteen. there were two more police constables. one asked me why i did goupstair wthout asking security person. I replied them there was no one. he asked security man whether he was there? he tld that he was there. I shouted at them if they were there how would I go up in the building and its their mistake and now why they harassing the common person for their own carelessness. I becoem angry and now my lucid dream broken.

I fell asleep and had a dream that I went to bed, then fell asleep, and started dreaming about something, then my alarm woke me up in the dream...then I actually woke up and reached for my phone to turn my alarm off and it was an hour before my alarm would go off.

Sure.

Dreaming of dreaming cannot be uncommon or unheard of.

As to waking up from both dreams you'll just need to wake from the original dream to wake from the dreaming dream.

Dreaming that you go to sleep and have another dream can be a device the subconscious mind uses to indicate a change in context or timeframe within the original dream, such as:

* A review of an earlier or later situation than that of the original dream
* A change to a different level of detail, consciousness, or mood of the dreamer
* A portrayal of a "what if" scenario, perhaps that is a bit of a stretch for the dreamer to imagine
* A temporary diversion in the dream itself, or representing an actual temporary diversion in the dreamer's life
* An aspect of the dreamer's life that the dreamer tends to compartmentalize or to see separately from the rest of their life
* A matter that the subconscious mind suddenly decides to explore
* A typical shift from one event in a series to the next, then happening to return to the first event
* Some other shift in reality or perception

Having a dream within a dream may be safer and more acceptable way to express material from your unconscious. The dream within a dream protects you, the dreamer from waking up. Such dreams often reflect a hidden but crucial issue which you need to acknowledge and confront.

I have dreamed that I was dreaming before. When I brought it up to my real life Coven it seems this could be considered to be part of astral projection.

I do remember I had a hard time holding on to what the dream was about and had lost most of it before finding my pen to write about it in my dream journal.

I have dreamed that I was dreaming before but the dream I just contribute to my own delinquent mind.

I dreamed of daily life..getting up...brushing teeth..going to the gym..and then to the office where I fell asleep and dreamed about sex.

I figure it was my mind's way of poking fun at my lack of activity.

I do this once every few months. It can be a scary experience, especially if it's a nightmare within a nightmare. You 'wake' up thankful that the nightmare is over but then bad things continue to happen.

I can remember with my twin brother that there were instances where we thought the same things at the same times or had the same feelings or emotions at the same time. Dreams wasn't something we talked about but I wonder if that sort of bond might cause two people to dream the same things at once.
