I have been thinking vampires are ageless they never grow old and they don’t die of normal means. So, why do they need to drink blood? What is the prepuce of it, exactly? I have heard of meany reasons for this but I don’t know if any of it is real or anything exactly. So I wanted some other opinions on this.
According to legend that is where they get live to stay immortal. To them it is like food for us if they don't consume they die.If you do not eat you die I believe this is the answer to what your question is?
I agree I thought / think it is their source of live energy etc. without it they will die and lose their Immortality. And do they not live for the immortality or do they live for the kill / rush of having such control over their own life, something we as mortal humans ...Have no control of our lives in that way at all. Just my opionin
Well, the term "vampire" refers to the Hollywood version. The real life people are known as Vampyres. Hollywood vamps are immortal, but Vampyres are not, though we may have a longer lifespan that most. Seeing as how most humans only live to their 60 and 70s, it's not all that hard to outlive them. Some Vampyres have been known to live to be up to 150, but that's very rare.
Blood, to us, is like an addiction, a need. Kinda of like a medication. Some people that have asthma need those air things, well, it's kinda like that. We go crazy without it. Oh, speaking of which, not all Vampyres feed off of blood. There is also psychic, emmotional, and sexual energy. Thus this conversation isn't complete.
I should of made it clear that Yes it is Hollywood version of what was said. I mean people in real life that live the vampiric lifestyle they do it for the energy, rush or whatever it is that they do it for . No disrespect to anyone.. I am not vampiric and sorta still learning about the Vampiric life that people lead, which are each different.
Who isnt a sexual vampire and who doenst feed from sex :P
Ok I have come across a couple of people in my life that doesnt get anything from sex but cmon? But this was about blood the hollywood style.
In Blade they are talking about how vampires need blood cause their own i sick and cant carry hemoglobin. Has this someting with it that you had in mind?
Blood contains all the necessary ingredients necessary to the continuation of of a bodys integrity. Oxygen, glucose, insulin, platelets, and other constituants are as necessary to the vampire as the human. Some vampires are now using synthetic blood which helps them survive without having to feed on humans. There will soon be a series on HBO that will have this synth blood drinking vampire.
There could be many reasons as to why vampires must drink blood. Granted that most of the answers are entirely fictional, and very few based on theories, any of them could be correct. One of the most common reasons vampires need to drink blood concerns the biology of the vampire.
As the vampire is immortal and has great strength (in most versions anyway), it is said that vampires lack the necessary bodily functions that allow them to generate their own blood. While the blood they take from others contains the vital nutrients and immunities required to keep any living organism alive, the vampire can't produce it on its own. A vampire drinks blood to absorb the nutrients, and other life-essential properties carried in the donor's (or victim's in some cases) blood.
The vampire needs to drink blood to stay young. the blood of humans keeps them young how i have yet to figure it out but it just does
The blood keeps the body moist inside & out. Otherwise they would dry up-dust all over. If your dead your body can not make blood like ours does. So drink or get the dust mop. lol
Vampyres need the energy that is within the blood that sustains life. Thus, immortality comes to play. many choice to believe in it or not but, we all have it within us not in body but perhaps in s spiritual sence. true there are many that need to feed but not all of them have to feed on one source.
Blood myth, like blood ritual, is ancient. Every culture has mythological associated with the power of blood which = Birth (menstrual blood stops) , Death (blood ceases to flow) and, most importantly, Rebirth (or Resurrection).
All resurrection tales involve blood ritual of some sort, even if only metaphorically (blood and wine at the Last supper, before death and resurrection).
Vampire myths depend on the blood sacrifice. Without we would not have this supernatural creature who is in the process of being transformed in popular thought into a Superhero, perhaps even a minor God.
I don't drink blood, but I can imagine it like being like a fine wine or a diet coke. When digested, it really doesn't do anything, so it's more for the taste than anything.
Things change when they are processed, for example, one doctor told me to lay off orange juice, because the acid in it would hurt my urinary tract. Now, if that doctor had done their homework, she would have learned that once it reaches the urinary tract, it has been transformed into a base, high alkilinity rather than an acid.
Alot of the vampire myth is hollywood stuff.
Sang vampires is the ones who do the blood drinking for energy that drinking it gives. one is drinking the life force of another.
Myself, i am part psi vampire. i feed off of just energy in nature. (the other half i am wiccan and empath)
anyhoots, those who drink blood do it for the energy/ feeding.
I have heard that some can go for years with out feeding with out dieing. but this is also partly hollywood storys i heard.
I think it is just like food not that much a source of power but more normal everyday food. I think they feed of the energy they can most easily use.
That is right sb blood is their form of subsistance nothing more nothing less.
well age factor is eithor is subject of ginom and or to psychic advance exercises which is now wiped from the universities. the person reside deeper, (which can meditate for hours) underwater, without having breathe activity (like david blaine) ha-ha those are seem having age of many hundred years such as sea turtle, giant squid.
Again, this is why I enjoy the stories of the Vampires as depicted by White Wolf.
Caine and the First Nights
According to Kindred myth, the first of their kind was Caine, the first murderer. For his crime, Caine was cursed by God and thereby transformed into a vampire. Exiled from his people, Caine was forced to stalk the fringes of civilization, fearful of the sun and ravenous for blood. Caine gained a lust for human blood because of the way he killed Abel.
From the book of Nod:
In the beginning there was only Caine.
Caine who murdered his brother out of anger.
Caine who was cast out.
Caine who was cursed forever with immortality.
Caine who was cursed with the lust for blood.
It is Caine from whom we all come,
Our Sire's Sire.
What blood does for the Vampire:
Vampires need blood (which they call vitae) in order to sustain their undead bodies. It can be human, animal or vampiric blood (but animal blood is not as good, and vampiric blood has potentially troublesome supernatural properties — such as the ability to create a blood bond).
Also, blood is truly vital for vampires, because they can only have so much blood in their body and they continuously spend it to heal injuries, use their powers or even simply to make their dead body move. When a vampire does not have any more blood in its body, it falls into torpor and cannot be reanimated unless someone feeds it with blood or a period of time has passed. This period ranges from a few days to several years, depending on the individual vampire's humanity - a measure of how much the vampire has retained of his former self and how much he has given in to his "inner beast".
Vampire (World of Darkness)
well...
meditation is base of mostly all psychic exercises...
even david blaine do meditate at the time of breathe holding. that time his eyes are gazing in one line and never divert, he is doing center focal point practice during meditation in extreme condition ( breathe holding ). meditation makes conscious strong and conscious always strong in silence and it can even stop the age too. if meditator is highest level. we can't say about the power of cosmic energy ((cosmic force) it can do miracles.
Even the immortal undead would need to feed to keep their strength and health up. If something doesn't feed it weakens and eventually dies.
they would need something to sustain them to keep there organs alive and going...blood does that for them..
energy and power have to come from somewhere and its partly what we put into our bodies , even vampires
Not all vampires drank blood and for some this idea came from the phases of the decomposing body when they dug them up. Not all in the subculture drink blood; they are a minority. I say whatever floats your boat. They use to say it was because of concentrated energy but that cannot be proven. All bodily fluids would contain life energy. Some are getting away from that definition. I think here they are talking again of Eastern European types and some of those didn't drink blood either. We have this idea mostly engrained from books and Hollywood or superstitions because many of the nomadic tribal groups of that area had blood rites and were cannibalistic. This was not every day and only in battle or to honor their family dead. Superstitions formed around this and some as I have mentioned in that area from the Roma. You cannot believe everything you read, especially if the same old things are parroted over and over again without deeper examination. Even Dictionaries and Encyclopedias state this and it is because it has come out of the definitions of superstitious folklore handed down, that this is what a vampire does but not in all cases if that type of vampire ever did indeed exist beyond imagination. I cannot see that synthetic blood would have any impact if people really do need to ingest blood. It wouldn't be the same nor have been inside a human body so they couldn't tout the lifeforce idea but it probably has an energy level as far as caloric, like everything else. They could just as easily ingest plasma which is mostly water. Blood is a living protein among other things. I don't know how the synthetic holds up to this.
I have my own theories about all of this but they will not be addressed here. This topic or similar ones keep coming up over and over again. I think people should read the archival materials first personally.
I have read a bit and drinking synthetic blood makes no sense to me because they are used to transport oxygen. Every site I looked at said this. How would drinking such a thing affect them. Does it improve oxygen levels when one drinks it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Blood substitutes, often called artificial blood, are used to fill fluid volume and/or carry oxygen and other blood gases in the cardiovascular system. Although commonly used, the term is not accurate since human blood performs many important functions. Red blood cells transport oxygen, white blood cells defend against disease, platelets promote clotting, and plasma proteins perform various functions. The preferred and more accurate are volume expanders for inert products, and oxygen therapeutics for oxygen-carrying products. Examples of these two "blood substitute" categories:
Volume expanders: inert and merely increase blood volume. These may be crystalloid-based (Ringer's lactate, normal saline, D5W (dextrose 5% in water) or colloid-based (Haemaccel, Gelofusin).
Oxygen therapeutics: mimic human blood's oxygen transport ability. Examples: Perftec, Hemopure, Oxygent, PolyHeme and Perftoran.
Oxygen therapeutics are in turn broken into two categories based on transport mechanism: perfluorocarbon based, and hemoglobin based.
Volume expanders are widely available and are used in both hospitals and first response situations by paramedics and emergency medical technicians. Oxygen therapeutics are in clinical trials in the U.S. and Europe, however Hemopure is more widely available in South Africa.
Artificial blood is supposed to fulfill some functions of biological blood, especially in humans. The term oxygen therapeutic is more accurate, as human blood performs other functions besides carrying oxygen. For example white blood cells defend against infectious disease, and platelets are involved in blood clotting.
The initial goal of oxygen carrying blood substitutes is merely to mimic blood's oxygen transport capacity. There is additional longer range research on true artificial red and white blood cells which could theoretically compose a blood substitute with higher fidelity to human blood.
Unfortunately, oxygen transport (one function that distinguishes real blood from other volume expanders) has been very difficult to reproduce. There are two basic approaches to constructing an oxygen therapeutic:
perfluorocarbons (PFCs), a chemical compound which can carry and release oxygen. The specific PFC usually used is perfluorodecalin.
hemoglobin derived from humans, animals, or artificially via recombinant technology.

I think that is why it is called a substitute and synthetic because it will help but it isn't the same thing at all.
In the "days of lore" it was believed in battle if you ate the brains of your enemy, it would make you smarter and know what your enemy knows. Nowadays, we know this is not true. Same with blood, we used to think it would "give" us certain things, but with modern technology, we know this is not true either.

From what we have seen in teh movies vampires are the living dead, but they need to drink blood for the energy to keep going

Wasn't there some famous lady that bathed in the blood of virgins because she said it would keep her young and beautiful forever? I know the name I just can't remember right now.. My pain pills make it hard enough for me to stay awake as it is and now I'm trying to participate in the forums.. lol.. wow...
well i think its because that vampiric blood dont servive that long because the blood destroys itself and has to be replaced
Its something in humans blood that vmapires can not make on there own.
DemianA - Some vampires are now using synthetic blood which helps them survive without having to feed on humans. There will soon be a series on HBO that will have this synth blood drinking vampire - the synthetic blood is now listed on the VR database.
The legends of blood drinking vampires has gone back thousands of years, across the whole planet, far further back than when the word vampire started to be used 1725 or vampyr(e) 1732 - the Rakshasas of india were blood drinking, cemetary living, rise from the dead types mentioned in Indian holy writings called the Vedas (about 1500 B.C.)
So its not enough to blame this idea on Hollywood. It is a really ancient idea probably based on the idea that someone noticed if enough red stuff flowed out of you, you died, so the red stuff must be where 'life' was - drinking it might put the life back.
In this modern age we know that drinking a lot of raw blood can cause all sorts of problems to an average human being.
To put it simply, Blood is life. The vampire is the un-dead. The not quite dead, the not quite living. They take blood, so they can be closer to what they desire. That of real life. They drink blood, so they can be alive.
I think it's supposed to represent life.
By drinking blood, you stay alive...because without blood, you die. So they keep consuming more and more blood, aka, more and more life, so they never die.
Epik -
But what of those vampires who haven't fed in a long while? Who become all but animalistic with hunger? Wouldn't the blood they had have been wasted up by then?
we are no ageless and never will be i'm a half we crave it but the beter of us can restran that earge
