What do you think a vampire (not a person) would smell like?
Iron or metal..from all the blood hes suckin.
Maybe rotton meat,since hes dead.
And alot of cologne to cover the stentch?
ew
I doubt that a vampire would put out much scent if any, you never hear of them perspiring for one thing as I suppose they don't need to. They don't have the same human functions. I have read that their skin is like marble, so perhaps no pores, no scent....
Well they are dead to begin with, right? Dead doesn't smell very well last I checked..
well an unusual post, probaly like mentioned above, rottening flesh for they are dead and the smell of iron from blod they have consumed on their cloths and their body. the smell of stale dust . huh I just cannot fathom this post.
I have worked in the cemetary business and smell of a corpse is not a smell to take lightly. a vampire in terms of hollywood would be a decaying blob to say, yet the blood is to substain life yet many cells as predicted would not be reborn and still give off that smell. when all elements are in place the dirt, stale confines and the decay of flersh even embalmed would just take your breath away.
I don't think they would have much of a stench...but not entirely sure. I would imagine maybe a faint metallic odor or maybe no odor at all
I would think they would smell rather nice, actually, because you wouldn't be able to lure victims into your reach if you smelled like pigpen from Peanuts, lol. I could see that as a comedy skit though, lol.
Thats why they have to hypnotize them... Cause of the stink.
Since when do vampires lure or hypnotize? The vampire I know of just attacks out of the blue, no luring, no hypnotizing.
Where have you been? Sure they do,they lure em in and hypnotize em before biting them.
Or maybe the victims are simply sdo afraid and overcome by the smell they pass out or cant move.
Perhaps, but I would think that zombies stink whereas vamps wouldn't. All I know, is if i were one, I would find a way to not to stink, lol.
I can picture it now, "Vamp by Mennen".
I would think that the essense or or scent the undead breed of vampire would give out would depend upon the breed, feeding habits, and in some cases, hygiene.
When it comes down to basic physiology, the vampire is different than humans; they have no body odor of their own as there is no sweat or oil being produced--blood replaces most bodily fluids, so vampires will sweat blood and cry blood under certain circumstances.
However, if they have just fed or are in an area that has a distinctive odor, they will most likely take on the scent of whatever they have fed on or been around. And, like humans, if they bathe, wear perfumes, etc., their scent will change as well.
The vampires I've seen attack from the shadows..maybe in groups. They don't come out casually and go "Hi, I am going to bite you now :)", but they attack you from behind and eat you.
That's what I see vampires as.
This topic is irresistible, like my fantasy vampires, who exude no scent. It's part of their hunting strategy so as not to alert prey. Only other vampires can detect them.
Their very undeadness is because of a magical influence that we have yet to understand. For humans, their pheromones are like a calming salve, a siren call to succumb.
Otherwise, I go with what psivamp said.
You seen a vampire? where you standing down wind because dead stink really bad.I worked in forensics and if a dead pig smells unbearably horrid.I am sure you would of defiantly smelt him in the shadows.

I suppose it's safe to say that they don't usually smell like garlic.
As for what they do smell like, I would suggest they smell just like unicorns, Leprechauns, fairies, angels, demons, gods and gremlins... for obvious reasons.
Stephenie Meyer says they smell terrific.
And as for them hypnotizing, golly jeepers, pick a vampire book! It's quite common in vampy fiction for them to have mind control.
well according to Stephenie Meyer they smell sweet and icy and wonderful
its sensual smell to attract victims
I wouldn't think they would give off a smell. Or at least a noticeable one. That'd scare away their prey!
i wouldnt think that vampires wouldnt smell , but their pheromones would be sky high that would explain the attraction ...too me
I see nothing silly about this post, or this question. It is a valid question about vampires on a vampire-based website. One that also forms a discussion, as I see different views from some people here.
So please put your brilliant humors in your pockets and refrain from posting here if you have nothing relevant to say on this topic.
Does anyone know of any vampire literature which mentions how they actually smell ?
I can't think of any myself.
I only know of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga that makes a note of it :)
i would think they have no smell. or atleast i would hope hope they have no smell. but who knows for sure
anything, a vampire could wear perume or colonge, just like us.
You're right Ant,its a valid and damn good thread actually, but Im sorry,I cant help but laugh and think of silly things when Im trying to answer. But I really was serious in my first post.
I imagine the smell they have would be connected to their activities. Since they no longer function as a living person, body odor wouldn't be an issue. In the stories, the more monsterous ones smell earthy because of their connection to graveyards and crypts. They often either dug out of their own graves or at least sleep in a crypt. Their breath usually smelled very foul because of the blood they would drink and they never bothered to brush or anything. A vampire would hardly have to worry about decay and dry rotting blood is not a very pleasant odor. I imagine more civilized versions would either have no odor at all or would simply use cologne, perfume, or deodorent to blend in more on the hunt. I imagine vampires like in the Anne Rice novels would be like this. Just my two cents on the whole thing.
Thanks for saying imagine.. I agree with Oceans creative input.
Iron or metal..from all the blood hes suckin.

Beast funny.. I actually have it on good autority that fairies smell like rice paper, glitter, and glue.
lapercauns smell of beer.. and clover.. I will tell you a story of the wee people that show up on photos taken by tourist in Ireland.. a rascal crowd of pranksters the Wee folk.
All Crafted of course.. just as my ghost is crafted.. BTW my ghost usually smells Like Sweet Leaf, though my ghost is in retirement except for limited Halloween engagements.
*Trying to remember the name of that Popular Powder ..
Yeah CryingDutchess, you crak me up!
Maybe they smell like the wood of their coffins, the silk linen that lines the coffins, and the roses we threw on top to pay respects. Or maybe they smell like CK one, LOL.
Well they certainly seem to attract people vice repelling them, so I would stick to the thought of them being good smelly types.
i think they would have a slight smell of a preditor, a long with a little tang or iron from the blood and then what ever else they may be waring, perfume etc
i dont think they would have a smell if they did it would be very distinct and we would not be able to smell it cause they like to hide.
Perhaps a faint musty smell, kinda like an old book. Just a faint hint of age. That is about it.
I have met many vampires and they smell no different than you or I. The enviromental factors come into play (i.e... certain shampoo's give off a flower smell in their hair, cigarette smell for those who smoke, different types of cologne or purfume, ect...) Those who claim to be vampire's are no different than those who claim to be a christian, baptist, catholic, ect.. It is a choosen title to identify themselves to a group of people who believe as they do. To be a vampire, you just have to believe you are, just as a person believes they are christian.
*note: I was referring to the mythical version, which is considered undead...THAT would smell like butts and cabbage.
The vampire lifestyle type peeps...
I'm sure they smell as good as their hygiene habits allow them :)
Everything has a smell, either good or bad and it changes... WEG...!
Depends on the type of vampire. If we're talking some countries definition, nothing, it is a spirit. Then in others, rotting, it is a corpse. In still others irresistably good, (Incubi and succubi)
in the movies the vampires have GLAMOR so they can smell like whatever they want to smell like to you. knowing you love cookies he'll make you think your smelling vanilla when he is near you.
sure i'm makin this up based roughly on games and movies and literature and assumptions and quazi-logic (quagic, yes i invented a new term). as the saying always goes: ask a nonsensical question get a nonsensical answer. thats how the saying goes riiigh?
if you think about it vampires wouldn't have a smell because the story is they are dead but still alive so they are not decomposing. I mean come on wouldn't you run if you smelled a decomposing body coming after you.
When it all comes down to it, it all depends on what the person writing the story wants.
Common sense tells me , not human- no funky human scent. Undead and not decomposing- can't be smelling rotten.
I think they could smell like not a whole lot.. If they wear cologne then that maybe.. Or maybe they smell like where they are at.. If they are in a bar then they might smell like smoke or something.
i think they would smell of the earth being that all i remember a vampire must sleep with the earth from his burial spot in his or hers casket, i think that feating to stay healthy undead would keep them well preserved and not smelling of death or rotting ....i do think if a vampire has not fed then he or she would start to have a rotting oder most foul
Isn't that kinda harsh.. So you don't believe in vampires dabbler? Is that what i get out of that comment? I mean that is your view and your a individual and all which is great cuz we all have different views.
I accept vampires as creations of fiction. Plan and simple. I also understand that others role play, or pretend to be vampires, mediums, and other mythological creatures. I doubt anybody can produce any convincing testable evidence that they , or anybody is a vampire. However some manipulate the definition of vampire to suit their claim. it is all mystic baiting, set and performed to awe those that they want to appear to be mystical for, usually because they have nothing else about them that has social appeal.
Imagine, what is wrong with only imagining things people? Be creative by all means, stop pressing creativity as real, it is so damn old.
Yes I am harsh why, because I am insulted, by people declaring those that have common knowledge that can tell the difference between mythos and reality are called closed minded. That Pathological people are pressing pathological beliefs on others. I read this post.. and I imagine.. as writers do, and have done, and people then take what writers write and act as if it sould be excepted as real.. Insulting, I am done with this site. ..
What do you think a vampire (not a person) would smell like?
That was the question.
Do I not believe in vampires? People have different views, if those views declare vampires to exist then without actual proof I have to conclude they are delusional people, or people that have created a role that has consumed them. Pathological actually.
" Wooo I'm a vampire .. are you scared?"
Make believe. Nothing more. Clinically you can understand the long term damage of such delusions.
What if I claim to be a ghost, or the swamp thing.. ? Humoring people that claim to be anything, Mediums, Vampires, and what not, just gets old after a while, no longer entertaining. Even if it is entertaining it fades to boring, and then creepy because some are insulted in their delusion that they are actually vampires and they have no problem lashing out at those who call them on their delusions. Imagine people be creative.. but get off the extreme role playing. Vampires have no scent, because they only exist in books, and in imaginations, and all your claiming to be one will come to nothing in the end.
Insist you are a vampire? Then here's an idea, prove it. It is so easy with all the cameras we have today in the world. Do something vampire like. I mean Until then I will keep my reality and fiction apart. Act insulted if you must, but I must ask why are you insulted by my lack of conviction that vampires exist? Does that somehow threaten your belief, does my disbelief effect your delusion.. then here's an idea, don't challenge my lack of conviction. Can people acept that I can imagine the things they believe. Are you aware that your views are a fraction of a minority, and not the majority, that people do not live in a world that is is commonly excepted that vampires exist?
maybe they use embalming chemicals to cover up the smell of decay; or maybe they smelll like people and blood since they aren't decaying
I stand with dabbler on this one -- he's giving a reasonable answer. I found nothing harsh about the statement. I don't believe in real vamps, I believe in role players -- and as someone kindly pointed out, the role players smell as good as personal hygiene would permit. (When is someone going to salt this thread? Just curious... Not attacking any sensitive parties but there is glue dripping from the dead horse)
They probably smell like whatever they used to clean themselves when they took a shower last.
probaly a rather pleasent smell to help with the suduction factor, or something that humans couldn't smell, but proally perceptible to themselves
somone was reading this over my shoulder, and they had a good point. They would either smell undetectable, since they are hunters, and a smell would give them away, or they would have a smell with a paralyzing effect or and effect that draws you in.
i am closing this one since it has been answered already and no more can really be added to it *smile*
