We all know and have heard about white magic and black/dark magic. White being good magic, and black being magic done for a dark intention.
But has anyone heard of neutral magic? Magic not done for good or bad, or perhaps for both? Does this magic have a name?

Yes it is what I do I believe that just as black and white , good and bad you must have both one can not survive without the other this is call gray magic you are doing both but only when you have to you do not do things against someone just because you can only for protection or if you feel you have the right to get back at someone.
According to Donald Michael Kraig's book Modern Magick, a definition of grey magick is given and I quote "grey magick is the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will, using means not currently understood by traditional Western science, for the purpose of causing either physical or non-physical good to yourself or others, and is done either consciously or unconsciously."
I was once told by a person that he walked the grey or middle path, meaning he uses white and black magick together and he told me that one can't have one without the other and that by walking the grey path, he mixes the two.
Gray magic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gray Magic is a term for magic (or magick) not performed entirely for beneficial, ethical or spiritual purposes, yet not malevolent either.[1][2] It is seen as falling in a continuum between white and black magic. Practitioners see magic, itself, as neither good nor bad, but a neutral process employed towards positive or negative ends.[2]
According to D. J. Conway, practitioners of white magic avoid causing any form of harm, even for positive outcomes, such as in stopping evil people, energies or entities; gray magic incorporates all the beneficial purposes of white magic, but also works towards ridding the world of evils.[3] Still, Ann Finnin states that many practitioners of gray magic employ the term because of its vagueness, to avoiding having to consider ethical questions.[4]
A rather different meaning to the term 'grey magic' was given by Roy Bowers an influential British witch of the 1960s. For him it was a technique of baffling, bewildering and mystifying everyone he met in order to gain power over them, since by doing so he was always more sure about them than they were about him:[5]
"One basic tenet of witch psychological grey magic is that your opponent should never be allowed to confirm an opinion about you but should always remain undecided. This gives you a greater power over him, because the undecided is always the weaker. From this attitude much confusion has probably sprung in the long path of history."[6]
"Nothing about witchcraft is ever stated definitely. It is always left to inference and your judgement. Consequently nothing written about witchcraft can ever solve it or confirm or deny its existence.
I have to agree with ladySnowStrixx , and I my personal belief is that everyone uses it everyday without knowing. Confusing isn't it... People do a lot without knowing it, but Grey magic I believe is a more common magic... And I personally believe it harder to detect.
one cant have white magick with out knowing black magick some go far extremes to white or black but we always practice grey cause even the darkest practicsioner needs protection from the being he calls to do his or hers bidding ...
People are always with an agenda anyway. Even when they think they are being objective. Since it's people doing the magic, its hard for me to believe there could ever truly be a magic with no bias. What's good for one might not be good for another. An in between? Hard to fathom.
There has to be magic that is quite black but isnt quite white.. Kinda the middle ground type.. Guess it depends on the person who casts it.
This is a common thread. I'm surprised no one has jumped up yet and said "There's no such thing as white, black, or grey magic."
Magic is magic - it is the intent of the practitioner that determines whether the outcome is good or evil, basically boiling down to an Ethics issue.
Really, I think that all of us need to keep in the gray of life and not make things black or white. That is not the way to approach things, according to counselors.
it fall's in to the gray arey but in pagens thay cant yous gray or black but yess thers an in betwen but most know ther intenchens
Pondering on this magic is what we make of it, for black or white or grey. It is basically on the practice of the individual and how they use it. Maybe i am wrong here, but this is what i believe. give two same spells to people and they will not use it for the same purpose. totally different sheme on magic.
From what I have read all magic is gray. What makes it black and white are the intentions of the practitioner. All magic is gray because magic is both good and bad. You cast a spell for money. A month later your uncle dies in a car crash and you inherit 50.000 dollars.
I suppose there would have to be a grey area as everything has a black and white side so everything has to have a grey.
Well, in my opinion, grey magic happens when white magic goes wrong.
FOr example, say you did a spell to recieve money. Then, your grandmother dies and leaves you all her savings. That would be considered grey magic. You got what you wanted, and it was not intentional to hurt anyone, but something bad happened because of that spell.
Grey magic can by bypassed though, by thinking ahead of all possible outcomes of a spell before doing it.
grey magic is when you do some magic with white intent but the spell goes bad. for example you do a wish spell, asking for money. a week later you mother dies and leaves you $10,000. you never ment for something bad to happen, but it does.
Yes there is Grey Magic! Gray magic is White Magic turned Black . Let's say you do a spell to obtain money, but then a week later your mother dies and leaves you some money. What started out to be white magic was actually grey magic which then turned to black magic. You see grey magic is magic that can turn white or black. That is why you should always do a divination with the Tarot cards or what ever method you prefer to find out the outcome of your workings before you do them! This way you will be sure to harm none in your spell castings. Even if you meant no harm, yet someone was harmed, you will have to except the Karmic responsibility! Once again... What goes around comes around!

I doubt there is such a thing. Everything is done for either good or bad. Just like there is no such thing as a truly selfless deed, there is no such thing as grey magick.
so if there is no such thing as grey magic, and everything si just black and white.. then take an every day occurence
you make a friend a cake for there birthday. they are allergic to something in it. you had good intentions but things went wrong. are you daying such things can not happen in magic?
Making a cake is not a selfless act. You're doing it to make a friend happy and that will make you happy which would be beneficial.
so you do a spell to make a friend feel better, indoing so that bad feeling your friend has needs to go some where you then suffer there sorrow. it was a selfless act but it can still go the wrong way
Nothing anyone does is selfless. Are you saying if you performed a spell to help a friend, it wouldn't make you feel happy you helped?
what i am saying is, you can do any white spell you like with the most pure intent in the world but it is not always going to go the best way. nothing more nothing less
Yes, but what does that exactly have to do with grey magick?
It is what grey magic is, Grey magic is white magic that goes wrong. it is not black magic but grey because it was made to be a white spell.
That wouldn't be grey magick. It would be white magick still.
Grey magick would be that which is beneficial to none or both.
Grevious demond posted a few back, "
Gray magic is White Magic turned Black"
Ahh, but in the original post ''Magic not done for good or bad, or perhaps for both?''.
i have explained what grey magic is, nurutal magic? what would you class as nutural magic, no gain to either partys? why must such magic have a colour?
Yes, that is how I would classify grey magick. Neutral. No benefit to anyone. Such a thing cannot exist.
Its just the spell going wrong for the others intentions. they mean to do one harm and dont or they intend to help one and fail.
Black n white ….*shakes head*
What ever floats your boat I guess, magic is magic, intent is good or bad, people are good or bad.
Logically if your good intention was to magically remove a cold from someone then you have killed cold bugs. Was that good or bad? Good for the person yet also bad as they wont have defense against it when older n possible die from it.
When dogma enters the brain, all intellectual activity ceases
Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!
I am going to agree with LunaObscura with the fact that neutral magic doesn't exist since magic is made to effect something and neutral magic doesn't serve a purpose for anything.
i believe one has to choose and not be neutral or grey, yes there are both dark and light magick but they ballance out eachother in the way the yin and yand do persay and if there was only grey then there would leave certain aspects of specific spells void is how i look at it.
I differ a bit in what gray magic is, I would say Chris Angles use of Digital effects, and manipulation through editing to be gray magic.
The definition of .. or better stated the tradition of magic/illusionist, is set in the manipulation of props, and perspective, along with the showman ship. To use a media form to short take the effect (although entertaining) is shady at best.
The use of planted audiences is another shady practice, although Chris uses actual audiences he skillfully places them out of the line of sight.
There are three main means of presenting magic in Fantasy: good magic, evil magic, and neutral magic. Examples of the first usually follow the hedges of magic that Steven Greydanus has outlined. Although good magic may not be overtly attributed to God, generally its practitioners are saintly (elves, fairies, aging wizards, stars, etc.). Evil magic is almost always represented as something demonic in origin. Neutral magic is that inherent magic to an object, person, animal, etc. A unicorn's horn is morally neutral magical in the same way that a fish's ability to exist underwater is morally neutral. Unsurprisingly, the majority of magic found in fantasy books falls into this third category - a fact that should not be overlooked.
(In some senses, one might say that a morally neutral magic is essentially good since God creates all things to be good and then man uses those things either in a moral or immoral fashion. This is true. However, for the sake of practicality, it is simpler to point out that until a thing is used it is essentially neutral in regard to human free will.)

Its a combination of white nad black magic. its the in between that is powerful in its own way
there has to be a neutral for everything so for magic it would be grey magic
there are no grey areas in magic. it is either entirley good, and if it is not 100% good, then it is black magic
That's nessacarily true, healer. Not everything is black and white. That is evident in everyday life. You see magick gets its power from the users heart. I know it sounds cliche but it's true. You may intend upon performing a white magick spell however, should you have a dark thought in your heart, then it could turn the spell either grey or black, depending on how strong the feeling/thought is. There is always an in-between for everything.
From what i understand black magic isn't Bad magic?? or at least that's what i perceive from others who have practiced it
I don't know anything about magic
I belive there has to be something to keep a balance between good and bad. Tv show version would be on charmed, the cleaners.
Not that i'm a beleiver of "magic" i once read, at an imature age, that "Grey Magic" Is white magic turned bad.
dabbler -
I'm afraid I don't see how magick fits in there.
Stage magicians are just tricksters.
How can there possibly be gray majic? Its based on the elements. 4..they are finite. There cannot be a grey magic, as I see it.
Ahava -
Then how can you explain the existance of black or white magick? Or so called red, green magicks?
s has been stated in many of the above posts
Grey Magic, is nuetral no more white no more black
But I still state that its not the color of your workings it is your intent.
GypsyOfTheGreen -
Would there be any intent possible that would indeed be able to be called neutral and thus grey magick?
dabbler -
I don't think so. Entertainment benefits someone -- makes them happy or sad. And thus it effects the person doing it.
Prank magic? Any magic used to fool some one into doing something entertain another person. especially if that person did something to insult others? Thanks for pressing me for details.
That's basically what 'entertainment' or 'stage magic' is. 'Prank magic'. It benefits some people, makes them laugh. While others suffer from embarrassment by it.
Shady at best right? Not intended to harm people. But not done to benafit their well being.
Exactly. And therefore it cannot be considered 'grey' magick.
Magick is magick no matter what color name you give it. Its all on the intent of the practioner.
I would have to agree with Mnemosyne.
Regardless of what color you give it...the intent of the practitioner would be what determined whether it was good, bad, selfish, for another..
I would say that if we were going to label them white, gray, and black..then gray would be the "nondescript" version...that undefined space in the middle where most everyone does everything.
Majick is majick, not white, not black, or any other color. It is just plain majick.
I believe magick is magick. The only thing that differs is the intentions of the person
I believe magick in its natural raw form is nuetral, it is the user of the magick that determines the outcome of the magick. If the user is dark in nature then the magick weilded is dark, etc... etc....
I don't see the point in neutral magic.... If it was neutral it wouldn't affect anything so there wouldn't be a point in practicing it...
Grey magick isn't always neutral. And the color of your magick is determined by your intent. Gray Magic is a term for magick not performed entirely for beneficial, ethical or spiritual purposes, yet not malevolent either. It is seen as falling in a continuum between white and black magick. Many practitioners see magick, itself, as neither good nor bad, but a neutral process employed towards positive or negative ends.
Hrm...well..I've never practiced gray magick before, however, I don't really have experience with practicing magick at all. But considering that Gray is blending black and white and is often-at least so I believe-the color of the null, or nothing, than I would think that gray magick would have nothing to do with either good or bad purposes.
magic is different to every one, some may lable it black, white, grey, others may not at all. it is magik all the same
there is no such thing as nuetral magick, when one chooses the magick they practice it is eaither positive energy or negative energy and some work with both to balance out the energies,it jsut depends on your personal beliefs and prefferences to what kind of magick you perform.
Some argue that there are no colours in magic only the intent is important, then I guess black and white magic are just labels to define intents and still intents are perceived differently by everyone and spells are perceived differently by everyone as well, eg.some believe that love spells are evil.
I read something that was called grey magic, it was defiend as having your spell come true but with a bitter price to pay. Example having money, but for it to happen your mother dies and you inherit money.
I personally don't like the terms white and black magic, they all took something from me before something was given to me so for me it's all grey, even though I don't like to put colours into magic. Well this happens even without using magic. So I'd conclude with the quote: nothing comes for free.
But still terms will always get used to define different types, like anything.
Well when I first started my studies I was taught that black magic is that of evil intentions, to cause harm to others or to control another's behaviour, or to seek death of another. White magic is that of good intentions such as healing, positive, growth, balance and stability. Grey magic was always the in between stuff. That was neither good nor evil, dark or light.
Isn't Chaos magic considered Grey Magic? I wasn't sure on this as I haven't studied Chaos magic all that much. But I was sure I read that it was considered Grey Magic.
I do not consider magic anything but a tool. Neither black, white, gray or Honduras maroon. Anymore than a hammer or pair of pliers are evil or good or neutral.
Equinox....there is always a middle to everything. Not everything is black and white. When one uses magick they are not always using simply white or just black. There is an in between. A person who practices white magick could cast a spell that they are intending to cause some sort of storm maybe, intentional or otherwise, this could harm someone or something. Thus making it grey magic.
well im wiccan and ive never heard of grey magic but it could be a form of magic that has no side good or bad ill be sure to look into it cause thats a good question that is going to bother me.. and ive been into magic for 10 years now..=(
Well in Canada and the UK and other countries influenced by the UK the word is grey but the proper spelling in the US is "gray." So it will depend on who writes a website to look up anything. In other words where they are from. Many of the colors that pertain to magic came from alchemy and then they were added and mixed and changed by magical systems or religion if they used them at all. They do use colors in many things such as chaosmagic. One must remember the spelling of magic with a (K) is modern and came from Crowley.
Black and White magic is perceptual and it is also depending on religious beliefs. Many of the magicians I knew and learned and discussed with the last forty years do not believe in black and white. I know Wiccans do but it is a relatively new concept and on top of it has value judgments because of the religious aspects as do other forms that have a religious basis. What I learned was many believed there was no black and white in all actuality. It was a perception of the Earth plane because here we have cause and effect, yin and yang and all of that but in all actuality just like time isn't truly linear...magic is just magic. It is neither black nor white...it is whatever the person's values are in regard to magic that places these judgments. Sorcery if we judge magic is totally self oriented so many think of it as a dark form of magic but it can be used in unselfish ways like any system and that is how people perceive it merely by how it is used. Many say intent but who says...who judges that? You can be in error in a spell if you use formal spells and it will be very negative...is that your fault...you bet it is for not thinking things out ahead of time...its not like you can say ooops I made a boo boo. But metaphysically it is believed there is a reason behind everything so perhaps what one sees as "black" has a purpose we just don't understand and most of that anyway comes out of movies and books...there are curses of course but you know it depends on if you believe in such things and if they actually work. I don't know really. Like anyone else I would only be able to listen to second hand information or read about it in some book which is questionable. Achelmy does state that most magicians practice gray magic. (Probably spelled grey) I get tired of putting the "k" there and forced to because of one man. One should know by the thread which is which.
are you kidding me? gray magic? there's no such thing as gray magic any more than there is black or white magic. black, white, and gray, are conventions by which we attempt to categorize magic, if magic is indeed real at all (i believe it is, for the record).
magic is as magic does, whether it's black or white or red all over is up to the beholder. nevertheless, if you feel inclined to put a label on everything, then ask yourself... does gray exist if there is a line between black and white?
if there is a line between black and white where one crosses over, then can there be any "gray" area of magic? some would argue that magic is only with good intent or bad intent...
You are ill informed as to what most magickians believe that have been around the bush a few hundred times. Grey magick stems right out of alchemy...they have everything divided up into colors and so does chaosmagic. I could care less what anyone wants to believe but please do your homework. We are talking about magick and not religious things certain groups do they call magick. I am not vouching for everything this person is saying but he touches on some of these things and the only reason I am saying what I say. I have been involved with magick for at least forty years. No matter who writes what there is always opinion involved. At least he explains some of these things. Others will explain it differently but the concept is OLD.
Magick has been defined quite accurately as the "Science and Art of causing change to occur, in conformity with Will." It follows, then, that every intentional act is a magickal act. Magick is the science and art of living. The modern custom of spelling magick with a "k" has been adopted in order to distinguish between the Holy Art and the sleight-of-hand tricks of stage performers.
Arthur C. Clarke has stated that "any sufficiently advanced technology will appear to be magic to to those with lesser technologies." For this reason, the magickal arts have been shrouded in mystery and an air of supernatural nonsense, which stands in the way of many serious students. It must be understood that magick is quite natural, and quite effective. Recent developments in psychology have validated many magickal principles, particularly the work of Carl G. Jung and his colleagues. Magick is the realization and utilization of Man's True Nature.
While all magick is working with the same forces, any powerful force can be used for various ends, and so magick is often separated into classes or schools such as White/Grey/Black, or similar labels. White magick is more properly understood as mysticism, because its sole purpose is the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. Thus, white magick is sometimes referred to as the Yoga of the West. Grey magick is really what most people think of when they think of magick, except for the ignorant few who think of all magick as "black". Grey magick is the practice of manifesting the will or desire of the magician. It is extremely important that the magician be sure that this manifestation is in line with his/her will, not just a petty desire, or they will suffer the consequences. Black magick is the name given to all magickal acts which pander to the weakness and avarice of the magician, and for that reason are ultimately self-detrimental. The concept of black magick has been clouded by a great deal of self-righteousness and false morality over the years. The idea of lodges of black magicians is absurd, but is used as a tool to strike fear and to slander the reputations of good people.
Real magick is performed in a place beyond "good and evil", but it is foolish for a magician to manifest that which is not in their best interest. For this reason, many magickal Orders and Masters insist that the student be well versed in the practices of white magick, union with the Higher or True Self. In this way, the student may learn what is best suited for them, and will not allow their grey magick to fall prey to the petty desires which are injurious to them self.
A distinction is sometimes made between Low Magick and High Magick, or Sympathetic/Natural Magick and Ceremonial Magick. The Low/High labels should not be understood as a judgement on the quality or morality of either methodology. Rather, the terms derive from the fact that Ceremonial or High Magick developed among the people of the cities, usually built on high ground. The more natural forms of magick, Low Magick, developed among the "pagans" and farmers of the lower rural lands. Over time, the practitioners of Natural and Ceremonial Magick have at many times blended traditions, and very few of the modern magickal traditions are exclusively Low or High Magick.
The 20th century has seen a great revival in the occult arts. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many organizations like the Golden Dawn and the Ordo Templi Orientis sprang up in Europe. Great minds like Eliphas Levi, Aleister Crowley and Helena Blavatsky helped to organize the useful information and discard the nonsense. Publications like The Equinox have set a scientific standard for the study and practice of magick. In more recent decades, the work of Gerald Gardner, Doreen Valiente, Margaret Murray and others has led to the Wiccan movement, reviving the old pagan systems of Europe.
But this modern renaissance is, in reality, nothing new. Magick is, has always been, and will always be an important part of human culture and society. It is unfortunate that this form of personal development was outlawed and despised by the mainstream Christians, for much of the wisdom of the ancients has been lost. To that which we do have, we are only now rediscovering the keys. The systems of alchemy, astrology, Qabalah, Goetia, Tarot, the Enochian magick of Dr. John Dee, and many more are beginning to coalesce into a meaningful and coherent tradition of Modern Magick.
Magick is not the evil, supernatural hodge-podge of magic words and flashy light shows which the ignorant make it out to be. It can, however, be a dangerous process. The magician deals with many aspects of themself, their environment and the divine which may be psychologically traumatic. The mind is pushed to its limits and beyond, and if proper precautions are not taken, obsession and insanity can occur. Anyone with neurological or psychological disorders should consult their doctor before taking up magickal practice. Magick must be afforded the respect and discipline that would be given to a martial art, and the care and integrity given to a system of psychotherapy.
However, magick is not outside the reach of the dedicated student. There is much to be learned, many ordeals to be passed and a multitude of obstacles along the way, but there is no path nobler, more full of delight and ecstacy, than the magickal path.
http://heru-ra-ha.tripod.com/topics/magick.html
I have always been told of the black magick and white magick but have never heard anything about grey magick until now. I do however feel that magick depends on the intent of the person that uses it.
I was reading some of the answers to the question about gray magic and could not believe the fact that some people think everything is black or white , if that was true, then you must live a very boring life. because everything is not nor ever will be black and white because if it ever is the witches and people like the ones on this site will quickly cease to be. because the ones who think only black and white are the ones who only think they are right and they are usually Christians.
Some consider the grey magic
"Magic done with the intent to help, but without the permission and/or understanding of the receiver."
while white magic is "Magic done with the intent to help and with the permission and understanding of the receiver."
But couldn't it also be magic used not for good without the consent of a person or persons?
What if it was the blurred area between is it magic, or is it just something that appears to be magic?
What if it is so neutral in its function so it appears almost white?
alixaryon -
Nothing can be done for neutrality. Everything benefits someone else or harms someone. Nothing does nothing for no one.
LunaObscura
I am of different opinion. There must a number of individuals which own interests do not tie with two groups of other individuals which are making the two groups, one of each duality through their actions, and for that the observer group which does not tie down in interest of influence and action, truly possesses the element of neutrality. It is safe to assume that the concept of gray magic, clearly is that neutral middle, as an embodiment of those two extremities, one to each side, and which are black and white, in this case, which of course clearly examples that there is such state as true neutrality, other wise, the term neutral it self would never be forged. Further more, the extremities cannot, exist, or move to each side, if they do not have their middle. which is in this case their starting point.
I believe that all areas have black and white answers and also grey answers. So if there is black and white magic why can't there be grey magic. It all depends on the person who is performing the magic and how it is used.
I feel that everything you do has the ability to affect something else.
If your intent is to do something that affects nothing, then would you do anything at all?
So if I only want to use a metaphor for magic, is that not gray? Why all the objection Luna? why so polar about magic?
For me there is no black or white magic, I guess you could call it all grey.
I was taught and raised to believe that everything we do in life involves magic. That what our intentions are will make it good or bad or neutral. There are no absolutes.
gray magick is nutral magick. stuff like palm reading, tarot, things like that
So could you say that being intuitive enough to read people would be grey magic? Depends on what you see "good" magic to be versus "bad" magic. Personally I see all magic as being grey because there is almost always a side effect that can harm or hurt. So I see the power in itself to be neutral.
"Magik".... are we talking about spell casting, mixing herbal ingredients, burning offerings, etc. ....
I much prefer to do "candle magik" as through this medium, I'm able to control my intentions more.... or, if nothing occurs within the alloted time of my intention, I can redo the intention in another way... re-state it otherwise.....
Leoderloewe14
I would say that grey magic is what sits in the middle. It's not necessarily bad, but it isn't entirely good either.
it is called Shadow Magick and is a natural balance of white magick and dark.
moonkissed -
Wouldn't 'shadow magick' incline towards it being dark?
Nothing’s totally Black or White... and like life and its people, Magic, too, has its shades of grey.
The Middle-Path magic, as it’s called, is the most common type of magic. It uses negative energy for a good purpose. Say, a spell is cast for a poor person’s wealth, but he/she becomes rich due to the death of a close friend or relative who had willed his all to him.
Whatever maybe the path, the intention is kind. Grey magic employs some aspects of both Black and White magic to cause the desired result. People who practice the craft believe that it induces balance in the natural order of things- balances Karma. Often, spells can be performed for another without their permission for a desired beneficial outcome. This may fall in the Black Magic area because the one performing magic does not have the other’s permission, but because the intent is unselfish it falls in the ‘good’ category.
Also called Neutral Magick, it does not come with the dire consequences of Black magic or the extreme ‘lightness’ of White magic (For example, you can’t cast a spell of revenge) .
Grey Magic aims to help. But before beginning the practice, it is very important that a divination be done first to ensure that no harm is done accidentally to anyone. Otherwise, things might go wrong and turn into Dark Magic. So, beware!!

i was busy the last few hours and couldn't get into it. i have always believed in a balance regardless of the label. i have heard many, believe me. to much white magick can have a negative result. it can often lead to a misguided sense of pioty and rightousness in the practitioner. just as dark magick can lead to overwhelming negativity.
one of my favorite made up chants was from The Last Unicorn, Shcmendrick calls upon the magick many times to "do as it will" that is more or less what i like to do. at times. i personally follow common sense rather than the Rede and if i perform a charm or do a working that comes in my favor than it must be my lucky day :)
magic varies in every shape and form, black, white, grey... its all magic, the trem grey magic is usualy used to describe the plane between black magic and white magic
there is always a middle to everything. between white and black is gray. gray magic is a very thin line with black. but you can use more magic with gray than white. gray is not black magic but it goes into the darker arts of magic.
