''The Morgawr is a sea monster that many people have claimed to have seen over the years in the Falmouth Bay area of Cornwall. Its name Morgawr is simply from the Cornish (and Welsh too as it happens) words 'mor' for 'sea' and 'cawr' for 'giant'.

The first recorded sighting dates back to the nineteenth century when in the year 1876, two fishermen claimed they had caught what they described as a sea serpent at Gerran's Bay. Exactly fifty years later in 1926, another group of fishermen caught a creature supposedly twenty feet long with an eight foot tail, scaly legs and a beak-like head.

Morgawr was then quiet for another fifty years until the mid seventies when there was a rash of sightings of the monster.

There were two sightings in 1975; one at the river Helford, near Durgan where two London bankers out on a fishing trip reported seeing a pair of monsters frolicking at the mouth of the river and another at Pendennis Point in Falmouth where a Mrs Scott from Falmouth reported seeing a humpbacked creature with a long neck, stumpy horns and bristles down its back. Mrs Scott described how she'd seen the creature dive and resurface with what appeared to be conger eel in its jaws.

In the January of 1976 there were another two separate sightings off Rosemullion Head and another off Trefusis Point by a woman enigmatically identified only as 'Mary F' photographed the monster. The photographs which were published in a local newspaper the Falmouth Packet, are disappointingly typical of all such photographs and depict a shapeless blob floating on the water that could be just about anything. As it turns out the 'Mary F' photographs, according to an investigation carried out by one Mark Chorvinsky and published in Strange Magazine, were indeed a hoax and believed to be the work of one Tony 'Doc' Shiels.

Another six sightings occurred in 1976 - a family spotted the beast at the mouth of the river Helford once more; a sailor saw a forty foot long 'worm-like' creature pass by as he sailed about thirty miles north-west of the Scilly Isles; a couple in a motorboat saw two large humps in the water off Restronguet Point and a man described a creature like a gigantic eel with humps on its back swimming offshore at Gyllyngvase.

On the 9th July 1976 another local newspaper the Western News, published a report of two fishermen who saw the creature, who said that;

It looked like an enormous tyre about four feet up in the water, with a back like corrugated iron. We came towards it and it could have woken up, because a great head like an enormous seal came out of the water. It just turned it's long neck, looked at us, and slowly submerged. The body was black and the head was grey, and we saw a total length of about 22 feet.
''

From everything2.

Another source. [picture from above comes from here].

This creature is one that seems related to the supposed 'Lochness monster'. Do you think there could possibly be a connection with them? or is it chance two such creatures have remained alive so long?

Could this creature be a dinosaur left over from the age of dinosaurs? As there have been fish found to still be alive from that age.

Or is it a genetic mutation of something? Could it simply be a hoax?

I think it's possible that the two could be of the same species.

It stands to reason that if we have found fish that date back to the era of the prehistoric period then we could also have other creatures..especially in areas of depth and distance so great as our planet's bodies of water.

I think that too many sightings have happened in too many places to really assume it's a hoax.

Interestingly, this is reminiscent of the stories of "Nessie" and how that did turn out to be a hoax. Well, more of a visual mis-interpretation, to be diplomatic...
Since we are already looking almost 30 or so years since these sightings, and no carcass has ended up on shore, it is probably safe to say this was not a brontosaurus going for a skinny dip.... Again, I am a nay-sayer!

this seems similar to an African legend, the Mokele Mbembe. Which is also a dinosaurlike creature.

From Wikipedia. The link is given above.

According to the traditions of the Congo River basin the Mokele-mbembe is a large territorial herbivore, approximately the size of a small elephant or a large hippopotamus. It dwells in the Congo river and the surrounding swampland, and has a preference for deep water, with local folklore holding that its haunts of choice are river bends.

I'll try to put this delicately. I copied the image (both pictures), and loaded it into Photoshop. I confirmed that there is absolutely no detail in the dark patches (the supposed sea monster), in the middle. This indicates very badly damaged photos, a drastically improper exposure, or bad fakes. I tend to go with the latter. Even if the supposed creature was jet black, the fact that it would be wet and that there are highlights on the water, tells us that there should be highlights on the creature, yet their are none. It looks rather like a black and white photo of some water, after someone took a rudimentary editing program and blacked out a shape in the middle.

Does anyone else feel the photos look doctored and unconvincing?

Alot of fake pictures are to bee known and this one i would say is the same, Even tho the legend may hold true, but people after proof finally give up and make their own, i would like to say these photos are just that a hoax. great legend tho.

I think that they're both part of the same species, a species that has survived since the time of the dinosaurs. There have been way to many sightings in several places to say that they've all been hoaxes. Many the Morgawr, lochness monster, and other similar creatures out there are descendants of the Plesiosaur, and they've just evolved or adapted to survive as things changed.

As cool as it would be to have a real plesiosaurus in our midst, I just can't see it possible.

The lochs and rivers in England/Scotland just aren't that deep that sonar wouldn't have picked it up by now.

I agree with Nista, I think it is entirely plausable that there could be such a creature about. There are all kinds of creatures that are still undiscovered in our oceans.

Take the giant squids for example, untill recently they too where believed to be mythical creatures.

But those creatures are hiding in our oceans which are much deeper than the lakes or rivers that some of the sightings have been in. I'm not saying that there's no possible way that the creature couldn't exist, I'm just pointing out that it would be much easier for a creature to stay un-noticed in the ocean than it would be for a creature in a lake or river...

While it's entirely possible for something to have survived these millions of years, I'd say, judging from those photos, that this particular one is a hoax. There are stories of sea monsters from around the globe, most of which are implausible, but like the coelacanth, there may be some large aquatic creatures from the mesozoic still 'lurking in the deep'.

I'd say that if these are real pictures and if there was a "nessie" than it's either the same creature in a different spot or a creature just like it.

If there is such a creature, I'd venture to guess that it's a very long lived, rare dinasour that has by some miracle been able to escape notice or discovery by the world at large.

That being said, I don't find the photos convincing. This is something I would have to see with my own eyes.

I believe it is possible for such a creature to exist, even if it dates back to prehistoric times and even the time of the dinosaurs.

There is plenty of proof in nature that dinosaurs still live today, crocodiles and sharks for example.

They could just a rediscovery waiting to happen,

Nay to be one to argue, but there are plenty of places in Loch Ness that havent been able to be sonar mapped, so "Nessie" or any of the others would have plenty of places to hide and play

Website for Champ and Nessie

Most lakes where an "animal" is sighted, have at one time, been connected to the ocean. It is said, that due to the continent shifts, some of these monsters were trapped in these, extremely deep and cold Lakes.

Lake Champlain, in up state New York, has Champ. Loch Ness has Nessie. Both of these lakes, use to be connected to the Ocean at one time.

I think its possible for dinosaurs to still exist, I mean, we haven't explored the ocean totally. We don't know what is out there.

The illusion of the photo, many monsters pics taken are of toys or other man made monsters before the new computer graphics of today so this is why they look dopey.

There may well be such creatures after all we find "living fossils" all the time. However, the images are fakes. They're little more than altered "Nessy" pics.

i do believe that its possible that such an animal exists....
that said, i think the photos here are fake. i dont think anything out of the ordinary is in loch ness...there have been sonar scans all over it, and they show nothing.

while some might be amused that im skeptical, i indeed am a skeptic. i just think that almost anything is possible!

skeptism is a ggod trait especially when trying to determine a prank or hoax. yet the skeptic may say that the pic was taken after the person actually saw it. then the mystery lies in skeptisism.

many wonders have yet been discovered on mother earth. and soon maybe things will be known.

I feel that the picture is a fake - the shape looks almost like someone took a picture of the area and then just cut out a shape to look like Nessie.

That being said, I do believe in creatures like this. Just because we've had no substantial proof yet, doesn't mean they don't exist. Take, for example, the pink iguana that was just discovered on the Galapagos Islands. This iguana has probably been around over 10,000 years but was never discovered until now. Who knows what else we'll find if we don't destroy our planet first.
