666 just sounds evil. With all of the Omen movies, it works for me.
People tend to believe a number of things which are devoid of even the slightest of credible evidence. I think this can be counted among them. And is usually the case, the belief fails to provide any credible link to reality.
Numbers are tools. They're symbols to represent quantities and the interaction of these numbers can be of assistance in building models which may mimic reality. But numbers are still just man-made symbols and reality remains reality.
The number 666 is a symbolic representation of a given quantity utilizing the decimal number base. That same number can be represented as 1010011010 in binary or 29A in hexadecimal. The value remains the same as do at least some of the symbols. The only thing that changes is the rationale behind the symbolism and even that retains a consistent pattern.
The idea that 666 is an evil number comes from the book of revelations in the bible. In revelations it says something to the effect that 666 is the number and the mark of the beast and that at some point in the end times if you don't receive this mark on your hand or forehead you will not be able to buy or sell anything. It also says that if you do receive it you will be subject to the wrath of God. There are an endless number of theories on exactly what all that means.

ah but you can't prove it isn't either. Any way it's not so much that the number is evil just that it is supposed to be the mark of the beast and it's the beast that is evil. It's from what is supposed to be a prophecy there is no way to prove or disprove it until either it happens and comes true or time ends and it doesn't happen.
the problem with revelation is it's symbolic and most people take it literally.

I think before everyone gets carried away with revelations ... the most important part is Let him that hath understanding ... there is something else to understand, it is not as simple to say "it's 666, it's the beast!"
Even so the number itself, in my humble opinion, is not evil, it is simply supposed to be a number that is supposed to eventually mark the 'beast'

One of the problems with attempting to show that anything is good or evil is that good and evil are perspectives, not absolutes.
In Nazi Germany, it was evil to harbor a Jewish family and good to assist the authorities in rounding them up for the concentration camps (death camps). And while we readily see this as evil, even the Pope and the Catholic Church loudly voiced their support of Hitler's agenda, as did the majority of the German population -- even many of the most devoutly religious members.
Watch a Disney movie about a young cougar mother attempting to feed her cub and you don't feel bad about her taking a weak and sickly fawn to prevent her young cub from starving. Tune in the very next week and you may well see a story of a mother deer attempting to protect her young fawn from a vicious cougar attack and you'll be cheering for the deer.
It's perspective, not absolute.
But unless you can offer some evidence that there is anything malevolent about the number 666, or even significantly different than any other number, then to assert that any such difference exists is to insist blindly and without support.
People tend to go by what the movies & tv shows portray that number to be. But, in my opinion it is just another number.

I think there is no proof that number is evil. To pagans it is not an evil number simply because we don't believe in satan. It is a christian concept.

Seems like a lot of it has a lot to do with a persons religious beliefs. Personally when i was going to church it bothered me slightly, but after stopping, figuring out my own "beliefs" it doesn't bother me anymore. It just seemed pointless to put meaning or faith in something that is just written down without any real backing...
As others have said so far, it's just another number with no real meaning or emphasis unless you give it to the number or object.

To me, 666 is just a number. For people who are brainwashed by organized religion, they believe it is pure evil, on the same note, they also believe the number 7 is lucky. The number 6 has always been my lucky number.

Evil or not? I don't really know. But biblically speaking; a man will be born from incest. I think that the number 666 revolves more so around the belief that a person has or a superstition that a person has. I personly feel that its just another number. If the number 666 is evil then what would its counterpart be the number of good is what I mean to say. As always with anything for evil to exist there would have to be a good side to it as well.

The Apocalypse has never been before certain groups got ahold of it cannon to any religion...that came much later and it got renamed in another language. Same word just different language. Certain numbers in and of themselves have meanings behind them and because of it they were used to represent something but it wasn't doomsday or any anti anything...its a misconception of what it was all about and if it had been left as apocraphal which it was in the first place and thought to be pseudoapocrapha in the first place with a ? mark enough to put it at the end of an original Bible there wouldn't be so many scared people around spouting things that have nothing to do with what the original intention was. Not saying anything more as numbers and letters have been used for meaning since way back in most cultures in the area including Babylon. They just happen to initiate many things that down the course of history get skewed.

I don't believe this nmber is evil, bt we have taught to believe it is. 666 is just a number and numbers have linked to many different things.
Take 13 for example - this is meant to be unlucky and evil why, because the Templars were arrested on friday the 13th of october in the 1300s. Also 13 is normally associated with withces and covens, this is because 13 people is the max number that one person can easily monitor (to prove this point, let me say that my company had a reshuffle last year and we from teams of upto 40 people to a max size of ......13).
Also the number 23 has been linked with many things in the pass such as the murder of Ceasar, the Titanic sinking, Hitler the list is endless.
I feel people should be left to make their own minds up about things, not be told what to think by places like schools and more importantly the church.

When it comes to the Christian and Catholic faith, this is not an irrational thought. Whether this is a superstition can not be more than pure oppinion. Especially cinsidering that literally billions of people believe this to be true. The word "superstition does not tie in with whether or not 666 is evil and/or it's origins. ;)
Oh and you have that wrong. NO WHERE in the bible does it state thatthis number is evil or represents evil, it clearly states that the anti Christ will bare a birthmark resembling three 6's. ;) The number itself is not evil, the person who bares this birthmark is.

It is a number get over it. Why do people promote a belief system they are not even subscribed to? I don't hate Christians Dabbler. I don'thate anyone for any faith they may have. it isn't my business what people choose to believe. Let them have it it's their American right. But, I was raised STRICT baptist/non-denominational so I do however know the King James bible inside and out. Do I buy any of it? Of course not. But I don't redicule and/or persecute those that do. I have my own oppinions and beliefs. I keep em to myself so long as they do the same. And yes...I agree. It is just a number nothing more nothing evil about it. Um no I didn't. I clearly stated that superstition was the wrong word....have you ever met a person whom is afraid of this number? I most certainly have not. Therefore if it is a superstition, it's a rare one.

Well no not really Dabbler. Not all rehash considering this was also written in the "great bible" which is the European bible. originally in Hebrew. very rarely used anymore. It is where all of the English bibles were translated from. But yes...most of the original scriptures were altered and changed due to translation. And scholars changing meanings purposely because they did not agree with them. Which is why I don't believe in the bible.

From where the idea came has nothing to do with whether or not the idea qualifies as a superstition. The idea is not based in reason, and has no demonstrable link to reality. It is thusly, a superstition.

I would suggest that if you look at the definition of "superstition" you will see first that origin is not a criteria for superstition and secondly, that fear is not a criteria for superstition. One need not fear anything to hold a belief which qualifies as a superstition.
And as the topic is whether or not the number 666 is evil, the question has been answered, though not to any unanimous conclusion -- it is not evil.
People that subscribe to the belief. They are likely to belief it as it is presented. Then there are the Agnostics, who study for the conclusive academic connection. Like Rasta Say.. They need that, when they are missing the finer things (actual things).
What one believes is not what determines what is. People might believe the number is evil, but the number will remain as innocuous as ever.
And while some people do hold superstitions which cause them fear, one can hold any superstition without fear as a factor. Fear is not a necessary component of any superstition. Irrationality is.

As was previously stated the number its self is not evil,but the person with number marked upon them. Say that 666 is evil is like saying the name Adolf or Mao is evil. Neither of these name are evil, but the most famous people from history to have these names have done some very evil things in there lifetimes and then ttied to justify their actions as being 'for the greater good'.

Evil is a concept created to scare those that chose to avoid the doctrine of the church, by degree Evil became an umbrella word. Once something is branded Evil it is sent to be dealt with by "gods" or in Holy Realms. So Evil is a simple way to remove society from solving Defective/degenerate actions from our list of responsibilities.
Sure it is evil! 666 means three bellied over weight men doing each other in the a$$ at the same time, though I am not sure how that can be possible because over weight men with fat bellies are not in a position to clearly see their organs of procreation. As well I am not exactly sure what are the first man, and the last man doing, because the first man seems to be free of action, but he is getting it instead, and the last man is not getting any action, but is giving it instead. I assume their meaning is not of boredom, but it signifies a incomplete circle of fulfillment , a loose end in the first man, and a state of unfulfillment in the last man, which is about to be closed toward its completion, once they drink alcohol, then the first bellied man will come from behind the last bellied man, and give him what he is missing, completing the incomplete, and suggesting the perfection in unity, and mutual benefit, a full circle. You get the picture. I am quite sure that the middle overweight bellied man is not a question during no time, since he certainly enjoys a well fixated place, of stability, and fulfillment, where he is receiving willingly, but at the same time, he is giving freely to another fellow as well. This signifies balance in action, and the position of the number 6 which finds its position in the middle of these three, is an ideal example. That is my analogy at least. Then again, there might be that there is a serious deep whole in my concept, or few even. If we take the current 666 option correct, are the overweight big belly men 1 and 3, really missing something in essence? Perhaps this is exactly how they wanted to be? In any case it is safe to assume that if there is not higher sense present in their acts, then, it possibly they do act simply out of the rule, and which is, who comes first, gets to lead. All in one, am not exactly sure, which overweight big belly man is leading here exactly, last one, or the first one? I would suggest they loose weight and turn them selves in sevens. At least, if nothing else, they would seem like followers. But I am sure they do make their own sense, the way they are, what ever they meant that they are doing. But thats a totally different story for another time.
Good point Dabbler, how easy it to put a label on something and put with other things. Take for example the two nuclear bombs dropped during WWII, that makes the States as evil the Axis nations, but it is not seen that way why? because as we all know history and therefore somes fact are written by the victors.
But back to the subject of the thread, how can a number be evil? It can't. Because it is just a number it no control over how people see it, it has voice to agrue it's case.
It is a number people nothing more, nothing less.
If I was to start saying that for example 911 or 112 was evil and it was believed by an awful lot of people would you still dial the number in an emergancy or would you be scared of the repercussions and that you will damned to the end of time?

Numbers and math was created by man, thus 666 was also created by man... I don't see how people get 666 as being evil...... Its just a method of keeping people in line and making a profit..... Just my personal opinion again..

666 is just a number it is not evil.
Of course it is not evil . It is a number and no more no less . No different than the number 13 or the number 7 . It is used (in my eyes) as symbolism when a name would have led to a death sentance . It came about in letters written by a John , which became revelations . John the author of the book of revelations . The letter delt with the evil and atrocities being done by the Romans and the current ruler of Rome . If he wouldn't have been cryptic , he would have been killed .
And no I do not believe the book of revelations has anything to do with prophecy of our future . It served it's purpose way back when it was written .

For centuries, people have been intrigued by the number 666, the "number of the beast" from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament.
Not only is it mentioned in the Bible, it has been associated with the Satanism, universal price codes and the game of roulette, as the numbers on the wheel add up to 666.
Now, the legendary number is getting a fresh look, as researchers are re-examining evidence the number may actually be 616.

In the King James Version of the Bible, the well-known verse of Revelation 13:18 reads:
"Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
While many Bible have footnotes saying the number translated from the original Greek could be 616, experts say new photographic evidence of an ancient fragment of papyrus from Revelation indeed indicates the number is indeed 616, instead of 666.
Scholars in England have been using modern technology to scour some 400,000 bits of papyri which were originally discovered in 1895 at a dump outside the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus. Many of the sections have been damaged and discolored, but an imaging process is shedding new light on the sacred text, believed to have originally been penned by John, one of Jesus' 12 apostles.
"This is a very nice piece to find," Ellen Aitken, a professor of early Christian history at McGill University, told Canada's National Post. "Scholars have argued for a long time over this, and it now seems that 616 was the original number of the beast."
The papyrus in the spotlight is believed to be from about 300 A.D.
"This is very early confirmation of that number, earlier than any other text we've found of that passage," Aitken said. "It's probably about 100 years before any other version."
The main researcher promoting the 616 claim is David Parker, professor of New Testament Textual Criticism and Paleography at the University of Birmingham in England.
"This is an example of gematria, where numbers are based on the numerical values of letters in people's names," Parker told the UK's Independent. "Early Christians would use numbers to hide the identity of people who they were attacking: 616 refers to the Emperor Caligula."
Many commentators have gone with later copies of text which assign the number 666 to "the beast," believed by some to be the End-time world power.
Some have also linked 666 with Nero, the ancient Roman emperor known for persecuting Christians.
Parker points out the possibility of 616 was considered by the second century church father Irenaeus, who rejected it.
Regarding this new text, Parker told Britain's Church Times, "This adds weight to those who believe that it is a reference to Caligula's attempt to desecrate the Temple in Jerusalem, by having his statue erected there as part of the cult of emperor worship.
"There may be a reference to it in Mark [13:14], where he refers to the 'the abomination of desolation.' But this was overlaid by the Neronian persecutions. People believed that you could get from '666' to Nero because in Greek he is the emperor Neron Caesar. And 666 is one number less than the perfect 777. The text [showing 616] is quite legible to the naked eye. It was published in 1999, but it has taken people time to catch up."
The National Post quotes Elijah Dan, professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Toronto, as saying the new number won't likely have an impact in the popularity of 666.
"Otherwise, a lot of sermons would have to be changed and a lot of movies rewritten," he said with a laugh. "There's always someone with an active imagination who can put another interpretation on it. It just shows you that when you study something as cryptic and mystic as the Book of Revelation there's an almost unlimited number of interpretations."
