I am wondering if anyone has heard much about this or if anyone has done this themselves and what did they achieved by doing it.
I experienced much of the same as Infernalmage. When you deprive yourself of sleep for a day or more, you often start to experience hallucinations and 'waking dreams' similar to narcolepsy. I've never actually heard of a positive result from depriving oneself of sleep.
Cults use sleep deprivation to passify their followers, and to increase the likelihood of hallucinations, which are interpreted as spiritual experiences.
I have been a lab rat for sleep studies. I was the only person that did not push the button.
I'm not sure if I would call it spiritual enlightenment but I've definately been wonky after days of no sleep. I can see how some might interpret the strange sensations and hallucinations as a spiritual experience, but I'm not so sure myself.
Yep loads of hallucinations, paranoia … even watched manifestations of my servitor in public.
I finally collapsed …..bloody rave lol
Napping for under 4 hours is not considered sleep because you don't reach that complete restful state.
To do it properly for any lengths of time you need to monitor you food intake and supplement what your body may be lacking.
Ex. the body drains its self of protein when we don't get enough sleep.
Fasting is a common practice in religion as well. My record without drugs was
6 days with only fluttering nods. Following simple routines becomes a task. Hourly projects are ignored, in the fifth night abstract objects blend together.
on day three there is a boost in sensation though. Dreaming awake kicks in the forth day. When sleep is arranged.
Monks do it without stimulants of any kind.
How would that change the out come compared to someone it finding ways to stay awake?
I am familiar with what you speak of, they are in fact allowed meditation, suspending the awake dream under trained dicipline.. Just anybody psyched out so intensly that they are not able to sleep are subject to impairment, mood swings, as mentioned paranoiis, astruanaunts are a fine example of people who endure sleep as well as oxygen loss..
I was the only person that did not push the button.. Think about that for 6
Days, twice they asked me the day.
Changing any thing about your sleep cycle right away will have adverse effects on your emotional being, yet alone a spiritual, if any changes are needed, or felt to be needed. Then consider doing so gradually.
Beast our bodies eat protien when we don't sleep, that helps me figure something out.
hallucinations, i've had after sleep deprivation
they were only subtle though, i would be awake and not realise it, and say weird things. and comparing my behaviour when "awake" and when hallucinating, i'd say i'm psychotic when i'm too bloody tired!
I have read that some cultures deprive themselves of sleep/food/water etc for periods of time in order to attain what they consider to be direction or enlightenment spiritually.
Perhaps this is something best understood by them.
I personally would not attempt such a thing, as anything I experienced as a result I simply would not accept as being valid.
However to the people who do/have followed this particular path, sometimes for many generations it's a tool of some value.
I recently watched a tv prog that showed adepts in India who through many years of scant food/water and almost constant meditation, manage to live not only to a great age but are able to move their bodies in ways that people half their age would have trouble doing.
dabbler,
Our bodies metabolize nutrients whether we sleep or not. The rate of metabolism rises when we're active so it would make sense that we consume more calories if we're not sleeping. But as for the idea that we consume greater percentages of protein, I find no support for the assertion.
Protein is likely the most misunderstood nutrient among the "common knowledge" of main-stream society.
I'd have to agree with Beastt17 here, in that you can't hope to make accurate assumptions based on your logical conclusions, without some form of supporting evidence and theory.
However, if you do take the time to investigate properly, you can find some work which leans in the direction of your unqualified assertion.
I've been looking at proteins and how they are produced and what effects they have on the body. Copied below are a couple of interesting and related articles (emphasis added);
"Vazquez J, Hall SC, Witkowska HE, Greco MA.
Department of Neuropharmacology, Biosciences Division, SRI International, Menlo Park, California, 94025, USA.
Existing data indicate that sleep-wakefulness is an essential behavior. The biological function(s) of sleep, however, remains unknown, due, in part, to the lack of information available at the intracellular level. Preliminary microarray analyses show that changes in behavioral state influence regional mRNA profiles; however, the impact of sleep on protein signatures is virtually unexplored. In these studies, cortical protein profiles were examined after timed bouts of spontaneous sleep-wakefulness. Within minutes of each behavioral state examined, a small number of spots showing unique expression were detected. Mass spectroscopy analyses of sleep- and wake-related spots identified proteins associated with multiple functional categories. Two sleep-associated proteins were further validated using a sleep deprivation paradigm. We found preliminary evidence for two different post-transcriptional mechanisms-one (GAPDH) in which the amount of protein was increased in the recovery sleep following prolonged waking, while the other (actin) suggested that post-translational modifications may underlie sleep. The similarities between the effects of sleep on both protein and mRNA profiles indicate that dynamic intracellular changes underlie sleep-wake states and are consistent with roles for sleep in multiple biological functions."
While this does not explicitly detail the differences between how proteins are used during sleep and wake, it does identify a function of sleep being the recovery of the protein used while awake for an extended period, such as a deprivation.
A second article which looks at protein intake (emphasis again added);
"Tang JE, Phillips SM.
Exercise Metabolism Research Group, Department of Kinesiology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown are simultaneous ongoing processes. Here, we examine evidence for how protein quality can affect exercise-induced muscle protein anabolism or protein balance (MPS minus muscle protein breakdown). Evidence is highlighted showing differences in the responses of MPS, and muscle protein accretion, with ingestion of milk-based and soy-based proteins in young and elderly persons. RECENT FINDINGS: Protein consumption, and the accompanying hyperaminoacidemia, stimulates an increase in MPS and a small suppression of muscle protein breakdown. Beyond the feeding-induced rise in MPS, small incremental addition of new muscle protein mass occurs following intense resistance exercise which over time (i.e. resistance training) leads to muscle hypertrophy. Athletes make use of the paradigm of resistance training and eating to maximize the gains in their skeletal muscle mass. Importantly, however, metabolically active skeletal muscle can offset the morbidities associated with the sarcopenia of aging such as type II diabetes, decline in aerobic fitness and the reduction in metabolic rate that can lead to fat mass accumulation. SUMMARY: Recent evidence suggests that consumption of different proteins can affect the amplitude and possibly duration of MPS increases after feeding and this effect interacts and is possibly accentuated with resistance exercise."
This again does not directly support the case for the body using more protein when awake than when asleep in general, but does indicate that the body can utilise additional protein intake in order to develop protein dependant systems.
Essentially, neither case pronounces that the body uses more protein when awake than asleep, but both do provide some angles for further investigation. There are however, very limited studies into protein usage in primates while awake- almost all will have been carried out on mice or rats during a sleep deprivation analysis of effects on the brain.
On a side note, Fold It is a fun little exercise which helps to show how proteins actually work.
Also, meditation relaxes the body, and when done for long periods of time, can be a temporary substitute for sleep. It can also often put the mind into a dream state, while remaining lucid.

This article describes the connection between meditation and REM rather well.
The 'adepts' in India that you speak of are largely yogis, aren't they? It's been known for a long time that regular practice of yoga keeps the joints healthy, and has physical benefits that prolong and improve flexibility. This has little or nothing to do with meditation or sleep deprivation, though.
Spiritual Enlightenment has to do with helping others heal and awaken other points of view to help themselves so in turn it will help even more, not just having personal expanded perceptions. For example..sitting under a tree meditating and having oneness with all is not enlightenment. As will be the effect from sleep deprivation. It can be useful to gain insight due to the change in perception.
I have noticed a tightness to the skin while deprived of sleep. Nerves relied on to sense things get dulled, physical touch sensation is distorted. A sleep deprived person speaks much louder then necessary.
I would be prone to suggesting that it's more likely a decrease in the brain's acuity to signals received than of decreased nerve function. And as one who has worked a fair share of "graveyard" shifts over the years, I've noted that speech can become significantly more labored and deliberate when extremely tired. In some this may also manifest in speaking louder but many simply over-enunciate and speak more slowly.
As to the overall concept of spiritual enlightenment through sleep deprivation I would have to suggest that the idea is as devoid of credibility as are similar assertions common to many cultures regarding certain mind-altering chemicals. When people don't understand why their perceptions have changed, even when connected to a particular practice or substance, they're quick to suggest that it's something spiritual. This is little different from the time when it was suggested that disease and mental illness were "spiritual" in nature. People become so obsessed with the idea that the "spiritual" is other than a fantasy realm that they begin to plug it in whenever understanding is lacking. In reality, nothing has ever been shown to be spiritual and most things proclaimed as spiritual can be demonstrated to be something having no connection to the proclaimed "spiritual".
To me this term is sleep in fasting.
if someone wish to get spiritual enlightenment, they go on chanting but intake very less food till they get enlightened message. my opinion is that our mouth is the engine of our celestial body to go to astral portal. when we goes on fasting our dire grows and less food and less energies put our conscious in subconscious state to aim to get enlightenment so that we can recover our energies after that having food.
grown dire makes our subconscious grow very fast.
If you are depriving yourself of sleep, I too believe it is more like halucenations, and not enlightenment. The two have been confused throughout history.
Sleep deprivation and starvation are proven to cause hallucinations and paranoia.....
Some of the earliest prophets and seers used this method to commune with the Gods. There a documented cases of this in all the bibles of the world..
Fasting was once a very common christian practice...
And is still practiced in some circles....
But can this method truly be used for enlightenment?
Maybe we should ask the tweekers.............
My personal opinion at this stage is, they practice sleep deprivation with the belief it causes an enlightenment of somekind due to seepage of DMT while awake. They might not have realizerd this, but and as Ive pointed out before, DMT has been known to cause these kinds of spiritual feelings in people.Im fairly confident that its the release of Tryptamines and the resulting experiences from it their going for.
You might try reading...
Tryptamine, Beta-carbolines and You. Dr J.C. Callaway, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Kuopio, Finland
Sleep deprivation increases endogenous DMT levels which triggers these transcendent visions and religious experiences. Buddhists and Hindus have the same experiences through meditation, and the South American shamans use their sacred DMT containing brews to achieve the same thing..enlightenment.
I dunno,it isnt really all that mysterious to me why sleep deprivation is employed for spirtual experience. For one,DMT and its use, whether drink, smoke or natural(sleep deprivation) is at the core of every single religion there is.Look at Christian revelations to the people of the Amazon, who have been using methylated tryptamine with beta carbolines since the prehistoric days.
Everyone is pretty much going for the same chemical..one way or another.
And what are your views then?
Can spiritual enlightenment be had with out the use of DMT? and such chemical stimulations to the body? or is it a requirement for such things?
DMT occurs naturally and is produced in our bodies Infernal. At this point there are a couple of different trains of thought.. one, it is a neuro transmitter that somehow connects us with the spiritual dimension and with one another.it is, I think what they were inadvertantly doing ,where things that cause the production and release of it in order to experience "divine" or spiritual experiences. But they didnt see it that way, they just see it as linking with the divine.Or whatever it is they are worshipping.
In my experience the Dream/hallucination was very interactive, having done
LSD, and Mushrooms reactationally. I adapted myself perhaps by preserved
Subdual memories subdual pardon my spelling, not subtle.
A merger of mythos soft ware, or adopted assurance ( not necessarly a belief) contributes to the soft ware that later allows one to slip into death eith out sensation, investing so much time attempting to imprint upon the soft ware of others is futile. So does the veil exist between this world and another? To me personally I "saw" what I imagined. I learned an assurance
Trumps belief.
Escapism=what ever makes it easier to die.
Those that claim to see beyond the veil, see projections, and here faint echos. Not from any great beyond.
It's your trip it works for you, let people know you have a conviction, assurance in what you believe, better yet let them figure it out, let it be a mystery, eventually they will learn.
People are tired of reading stories of cults filled people that compromised themselves through cult practices of which is sleep deprevatiion.
it is your trip..this is mine, assured.
Over stimulation of DMT likely weakings the bodies dispersal effectiveness.
Sensationalism can make even fantastic mundane observations, and reaction, dull and boring. Entertaining a persons belief is nothing new, and those that do so are being exposed at a phenomenal rate.
While I don't know if it is factual or not, I've heard that one could actually die if deprived of too much sleep.
Chemically aided depravation causes psycosis, and biochemical imbalrnces
Good question Isis, does lack of sleep kill? A dear local man died driving , lack of sleep being the summary.
Perhaps the lapse in judgement can kill more then lack, without chemical stimulation
, I am sure the body would shut down, this is based mostly on military experiences with sleep deprivation, and in uc berkley bio science studies.
I was the only person that did not push the button.
Pretty much Dab.
Here you go...

Sleep deprivation can kill in more ways than one.
Longest I've gone without sleep was about 10 days. Of course, this was when I was younger and used a lot of drugs.
Day 1: You may feel slightly drowsy, but usually a cup of coffee or a cigarette fixes that.
Day 2: You start feeling the effects of wanting sleep a little bit more.
Day 3: "The Enlightening" period occurs where your body begins fluctuating brain waves between alpha and beta. You'll start having strange thoughts.
Day 4: You start hallucinating. This includes seeing outlines of objects that aren't there, and small "exploding objects" in the air.
Day 5: The hallucinations become more prominent, and you become prone to microsleep. Sometimes you'll wake up and not even realize you dozed off.
Day 6: At this point, the hallucinations don't get any better or any worse. They just become "different". These typically will range between auditory and visual hallucinations. You normally will NOT have sensory hallucinations until about day 8.
Day 7: Your reaction times become noticably slower, and it takes a bit longer to process information. Amidst hallucinations, one could liken this phenomenon as "The Walking Acid Trip".
Day 8: Your limbs feel quite heavy, and strenuous movement becomes somewhat difficult to perform. Auditory and visual hallucinations give way to sensory hallucinations that can range from: skin tingling sensations, liquid legs, intense random vibrations of one's own body and the surrounding environment.
Days 9 and 10: Same shit happens, just with more intensity. With some regularity you will have dreams while you're fully awake. Only a few seconds will have passed, but it feels like you've been dreaming for hours.
inb4 "10 days is impossible."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_deprivation#Longest_period_without_sleep
72 hour sleepless position is the state of depression and only meditator can enter that period rest fall to depression or get anti depression medicare.
While the concept is extremely fascinating, i woudl think that the testing would be flawed. At no time are any two individuals alike and so the data retrieved for both cannot be calibrated to show any patterns that would really open any doors. In the same direction, of it were to be that one person were subjective to being exposed to such an enlightenment, who is to say that they have really been? Conversely, the other subject, thinking there has been no evidence of an event, turns out to be the one who has had that exposure?
That was well stated CD.
Dreaming awake is so like being enlightened, then realizing your just dreaming awake is a revelation.Even obvious concepts are proccessed as mystical after a week without sleep. Getting clear answers to inquiries is quit the task for testers as well.
Actually Ive seen a few good points made in this discussion.... Earlier I said maybe we should ask the tweekers... Well truthfully I used to fit into that category.... I saw a great many things that according to reality were not there.... But when I dwelled upon said images I always found a relevant signifigance in one or more of my current life situations of the time.... My visions were always beneficial if I chose to accept them as guidance.......But I am still at this time unable to say whether or not they were of a divine nature or simply my own psyce working out its own perception of the tribulations I was facing... Self Preservation or divine influence that is the question......... I dont believe in psychosis... Poeple are not crazy they simply see the things most are unwilling to accept.
The Native American use this technique all the time when going to the swet lodges for enlightenment, and for the means of spirit talk as well as coming of age ceremonies. The walk abouts ask for at least three days without food or water. Meditation is a must, but no sleep is preferable within those three days.
Bloody hell, I would be talking to the spirits after all that as well.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't ignore this:
I dont believe in psychosis... Poeple are not crazy they simply see the things most are unwilling to accept.
So you're saying that Dahmer wasn't crazy? People didn't understand why he ate children because they didn't see what he saw? Does that mean he was more enlightened than they were?
What about Charles Manson? Was it an enlightened state of mind that caused him to order the numerous murders?
Ted Bundy, Ed Gein, BTK, all of these men are considered crazy, but according to your statement, they just see things that most are unwilling to accept.
In yoga and psychic exercises it is suggested to sleep good from 9.30 pm onward till 4 am and later start meditating in th sacred room. the person who wish to get enlightenment go on fasting by taking only one time meal on noon and no feeding else except juice, water and if wish a little cup of tea. he when enchant day time, he is very nearer to all states of cerebro in spirituality
these state are:
1) Jagrut Awastha : Open eye active mind state: this case he see the total materialstic world as the matter part of the God as universe (Vishwa Roop Ishwar)
2) Swapna Awastha: Close Eye Dream State in this state his dream will be lucid and see the God as the Light or Ascension, the world he will see is the ho;le the God of Light - spirits is its power. (Tejas Roop Ishwar)
3) Pragya Awastha: in this state matters are slept and just deep subconscious very thinly awake and the person do not know any thing of materialstic world in this deepst slept dreamless state but his thin deepst subconscious is only aware of the God, Nothing else.
4) Tureiya State: in this state his conscious control over his mind and it see everything as the Grace of the God and part of the God and nothing else. This is the state of real bliss. The enlightenment. Its not easy at all.
it require a little long period in this duration he drops every sin. and this tureiya is the state of samadhi.
Psycosis is very real, I have suffered with self induced psycosis for a year after my meth use,
Mental capacity is depleted, comprehension is dulled, coping skills are impaired, erratic episoids, delayed sensation ( makes you wonder if you feel at all).
