How many believe what we watch on tv like aliens, day after tomorrow , happening , The day the earth stood still , the legend?
We watch this stuff and wonder, "what if it really happened here in our world, in the real world." Would we be prepared for it?

We can be considered Jaded by that which entertains our desire for contained suspense, some press the envelop by attaching " What-if" to fictional scenerios.

*** Personally, I like to break things down to probable and improbable. I haven't seen all these movies, however, so I don't know how probable the end results are. As for Day After Tomorrow and Legend, sure...those are entirely probable. Nature likes cycles. We've already had one Ice Age; why not another? And everday, new diseases and viruses are creeping up. Maybe a virus won't turn humans into vampires, but it's entirely probable that nature will create something nasty to rid the world of its biggest pest.

Will the world be prepared for it? I seriously doubt it.

Concepts of movies some times seem so plasible, yet we must ponder on is it or could it happen. Possible in all ranges it could some day actually come to be, yet do not say that to loud - you may go to the funny farm.

Anything is possible to a degree, yet we must remain in the state of actuality than of the fiction of modern day writers.

*Chuckles* its only natural that society is rarely ever prepared for global catastrophies. Save for the survivalists out there, they know who they are.

My speculative view on this is that if someone actually believes a global apocalyptic catastrophy like an alien invasion or global epidemic caused by a Resident Evil type of virus (Zombi) such as seen on the telly is imminent, then they might just be a tad naive to say the least.

Just like most of society, I feel that even if and or when the next hurricane hits Louisiana or some other Southern State that is in the hurricanes path, will have learned nothing from the last dozen times a storm of that magnetude hit...That they will be very ill prepared and go running to the next state with panic in their eyes like they would normally do.

I think that when they make a movie like the above mentioned they put in bits a pieces that makes you think that it could really happend. This way they make the movie more interesting and good to watch.

I think its all probab le/ whoever mentioned our ONE ice age in the past is wrong/ the earth has passed through several ice ages (with warming up spots in between)
So alot of these scenarios are painted to entertain, but the serve the powers that be in a more deliberate manner (just our news stories do).
They push the FEAR level up among the populace (sheeple). When people are scared, they
1 shop MORE
2 are less likely to question authority

So, yes i believe alot of these scanarios are probable/ will I see them in my lifetime? Probabaly not... it's Hollywood, folks... remember it used to be called "tinsel town".

What is a real hoot, is when someone sits and views a movie, or TV show based on fiction, and imagined scenerios, and Rants the afterward about how unaccurate it was from their "accepted reality" of the matter.

*Chuckles sarcastically* Hey now ~Dabbler~ I resemble that remark...

Never fails even in a movie theatre that the show even when it must go on seems more like a portrayal of the all time classic: Matinee starring John Goodman, about what society might do due to a nuclear disaster...Even if they wish to see the movie again and again due to the shock value, even if said shock value were the assumed immediate future just as with the movie itself.

Humans...Oi, so predictable.

If something can be "edit" and make the viewer see something different, then, is not worthy believing in such of things. I don't watch too much TV. But, there are many who are Fanatics about those programs, that they believe to the bones, what ever the tube tell them.

Scenerios like that have been thought about countless times and there are some things we are prepared for but whether or not we have the appropriate technology of such say, invasions, is questionable. There are so many people in this world that would need protection but many wouldn't be prepared because we are too comfortable most of the time.

We are not even prepared for a disaster that has happened to our planet before and will happen again -- a major meteor strike.

There was an article about this a few years ago that argued that NASA should spend the $5 million or whatever to design a rocket that could divert a meteor and save the whole damn planet. Instead our tax dollars go to bail out GM.

So imagine how unprepared we must be for aliens, etc.

To me watching movies is like watching realty television shows....noone really knows what is going on in the background when the camera are off. We don't know what will happen in the future. It is like when the cameras are off on realty shows. It just leaves us to wonder sometimes.

People can try and predict.....but does'nt mean it is full truth. That is like trying to put together the movie the Da vinci Code. It is fiction, but yet there are believers.

As well as I am sure there will be believers in Angels and Demons, but yet Ron Howard has stated it is fiction.

People (some) will take bits and pieces and believe what they want to believe. Wonder if people believe we will have a Terminator?

If a work of fiction alluded to " supporting historical documents" that is enough to make people blur the line between reality, and fiction. I just picture all the people actually subscribing to "National Treasure" the movie with Whats his face..

I just saw the Happening that was just mentioned and all he did was take an idea concerning what so many are stating, that man is destroying the environment and ran with it. It was a fictionalized worst case scenario. It was ok but quite honestly I thought it a little over the top and I personally didn't like it BUT things like this can be a wake up call to act to clean up the dang planet.

If we can think it, the possibility exists. With the amount of planets in space, we have not begun to imagine the life forms that already exist. We are not alone.

Possible to a degree, depending on the future or th unknown that we can speculate.

That is actually agreed on , the probability of life existance on other planets,
yet it is far fetched ( fringe) to stretch that to assume such life has visited earth..

Not everything imagined is probable. It is sad to think that people cannot accept the nonsensational likelihood, over pushing the rational, logical.

Rational or logic aspect of aliens, maybe far fetched. but if one assumes that it is plasible for life on another planet than it would be plasible to say they have technoligy that they like us are now visiting closer planets and some day we shall meet.

The day after tomorrow scenerio with the planet in chaos, huh plasible but not to the degree of the movie. yet could very likely happen the way the world is changing.

logicall thoughts of gov't bio warfare creating something this world could not handle. plasible for the are infact doing studies every minute of the day.

Logical portions of thoughts of hollywood, but on a rational point and not the fictional side of the dreams.

That has been mathmatically reasoned VG, is it rather telling that the moment after science, and academia accepted with a degree of certainty such a thing that the fringe pushed the envelop and Avowed " We knew it, The alians are here." In no way have those who are so engaged in, and claim to even be in audiance with alians contributed to existing think tanks relating to reasoning the probability of life existing on other planets, the same people who offer no reasonable speculation as to how alien life forms can cover vaste Vaste Distances, seems had half these professed Channlers of aliens where in concert with aliens they wouldn't need to be dependant on Seminars, and book sales..

Sensationalism is instaled in humans at a young age. Somehow people feel that they are above make pretend, so they make believe instead, as if all the sensational topics they fantasizes about are factual .. any media support that implies a reality link.. They buy.. All the while scoffing cinima portrail of what they so desperate believe to be " factual".

I personally believe The Day After Tomorrow was not that far-fetched. The earth has been through several ice ages, and some had to happen so very fast, otherwise we would not find fully intact Wooly Mammoths to study. The fact remains, we have no idea what we are doing to our planet, because there has never been pollution of the kind today from the things we have created. All things evolve to adapt to their environment (kind of redundant), so why wouldn't the environment evolve to save itself?

Would man kind be ready for any sort of disaster like that? Are you kidding? We can barely fix ourselves after hurrcanes or tsunamis or earthquakes. And apparently can't fix the economy either. A massive disaster would come down to the survival of the fittest in the worst-case scenario, I'm afraid.

I also think to believe that we are the only intelligent life forms out there is very arrogant. We have yet to explore but a small percent of the galaxy, much less universe.

what most dont under stand is how powerful media is , people get ideas and more then you would think from news and the media uses us like sheep .
We see bad news and think wow its true , not always so they only put in the news what they want you to see .
Some if you have a great mind can read what the true message of a movie is .
Sometimes our own gov uses movies to get to a point .
Dont be sheep know what is and what is not true use your own brain and dont be used .
Remember there are only two types of people in life the users and the used.
Sorry to put that so blak and white.

well stated, movies have always seemed to influence humans, romance scenerios, alien scenerios, and fighting. a tool that brainwashes the mass at some given point.

we see that everywhere on what we buy, vacation and some drastic points on murders on our society.

so yes the influence is there at some degree.

I agree with BeautifullySadistic, in regards to the things that are probable, and therefore believable in movies like 'Legend" and The Day After Tomorrow'. We humans are always capable of ruining the environment and destroying each other.

I might also add that the 'reality TV' shows are just as make-believe as the fantasy/sci-fi movies one sees.

As long as there are movies, tv's, newspapers and radio we will always have this. I am skeptical of all of it. Newspapers and radios only print or broadcast what they want you to hear because it is good ratings..same thing with television..and movies...Oh well the impossible is always possible when it comes to movies. It all comes down to what sells not necessarily truth.

For all who foster and proudly proclaim a philosophy that "If we can think it, the possibility exists...", P.T. Barnum's immortal adage most specifically applies that, indeed, "a sucker is born every minute."

Gullibility is most certainly the product of an attitude that indeed all things are possible to them that "believeth." And no where is this better exemplified than in those who believe whatever the TV tells or shows them. There's a reason why TV has been called so often the "idiot box," and nothing defines "idiot" better than those willing and wanting to believe in anything and everything they or anyone else can imagine.

While this is not to say that there cannot be truth on TV, yet as previously pointed out, the TV's primary purpose is to generate a profit through the selling of advertisements to viewers. And the only way to get the viewers to watch is to provide the most sensationalist programming that will best ensure that faithful viewership. Thus, truth or any degree of believability does not and never has figured particularly high on the totem pole of broadcast priorities... and only an "idiot" would believe otherwise.

personally I think the inhabitants of this planet would react far better than our governments would give us credit for. of course, there are always the exception, such as the gun toting, gay bashing, bible toting fanatics, who would probably come out guns a blazing

Well if you believe everything that you watch on movies then you probably believe everything you hear on tv. There are tons of things out there that we can not explain and I do believe if the "what ifs" ever happen then we really would not know what to do. We would be wanting to run back to the books or movies to get the answers when all you should really do is use the brain that you were given to help figure out the solutions. In nice terms.. we would be screwed.

I take things in movies and on TV with a grain of salt. In other words I dont think much of it. I love watching them and sometimes I think about the what if's.
Anything is possible in the real world. Why should we get ourselves worked up over something we watch on tv or the movies. Yes we need to prepare ourselves for any situation and sometimes movies can help us in this area.

All of the movies that you list are works of science fiction and are not to be taken as being fact. Most are based on probabilities, imagination, folklore and, in some cases, small bits of truth. The fact that we exist only increases the possibility that there is life on other planets or in other galaxies.

If the day came that Aliens did show themselves to us I think it would first be taken as propoganda. When it comes to the subjects of aliens, the unexplained or supernatural, etc, depicted as being true on TV, many have been proven to be exploitations for personal gain--mainly money. After a while it becomes the "Boy Who Cried Wolf.

One thing "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (and I am speaking of the original version made in 1951) has right is the way Humans reacted. Until we, as a people, are accepting of each other for our differences, we will not be accepting of those from another World.

On the other hand, "The Day After Tomorrow" is different--changes in planetary weather conditions could be caused by many things (such as Meteors) and movies like that are based more on conditional proof, hypothesis and conjecture. If it did happen, I think, like in the movie, we would not be prepared to deal with it.

Funny TV Teaches People that " We only use 10 percent of our brain."

And I hear that anthem all over this sight.

TV teaches " Anything is possibile, and that is a popular Cliche' perhaps one should expand this question to " believe every thing you see, hear on VR.

Now the post is: Believing what happens what we watch on TV.

To that I would have immediately said: Uh uh!!!

The question inside the thread elicits an entirely different response. Yes! I watch some of the end of the world movies, etc and think: That's entirely possible!! What if.....

It usually ends up with me jumping online to research the potential disaster.

Stephen King's "The Stand" held an entirely rational premise (with the exception of the Devil walking around on earth..laugh). Man creates biological weapon. Man has an accident. Man chooses self-preservation over safety for the entire planet. With the world being global, infection cannot be contained. Most people die with the exception of a few who are genetically immune to the disease.

That scared the living crap out of me.....well...still does.

That is the power if creativity, crafting the nearest likely worst case senerio, and uping the Ante.

Rather then being stuck into being so concerned about everything they believe being really possible, writers develop the story complete with a happy ending .. ( sometimes).

The same people that laugh at others for roleplaying off what they see on TV, are Make Believin' off of what they find online.
