I live in Kentucky, and there seem to be a lot of ghost and/paranormal stories here. I read on the internet that it may well be one of the most haunted states in the country. We have everything from ufo sightings, hells half acre(mentioned in another thread) and a tree that grew into the profile of the woman buried under it.
All of this is in my county, which is small with nothing approaching a city and nothing at all to do.
I wonder if that might be why we have so many reports of paranormal activity and if a good deal of it isn't out right lies.
What do you think; is there a corelation with population size and paranormal activity?
Building over places of death can cause problems, most small areas get this... or so I've heard.
We aren't really a small area, just a small community. There aren't many people and everything is very spread out.
i live in a somewhat small town and there are alot of stories around my place as well.
lots of psych wards being haunted, a gateway to hell, hellhound sightings, and alot of spirits of children in mauseleoums. i was going to go on a hunt this year but my friend never picked me up.
i think alot of these stories are bs though. ya know... guys just saying that they are going to go to these places that aren't really haunted building up a story for the place, like "the last 4 ppl to go there are in a mental hospital right now". i'm not sure how much population has to do with it though... we do have a large quantity of graveyards and abandoned psych wards though
We have an angel on a mosaleum that supposedlly every one but me has seen cry blood and flap her wings. I've been several times at midnight and she never does anything for me.
yeah i've heard stuff like that to.
i'm curious how much of the stories are true... there's a hunting group in my area that i'm thinking of contacting to see if i can't join them next time they do something.
one of the stories that i had was almost right out of lord of the rings... i was going down a dirt bike trail last year and the leaves started blowing real hard and i started hearing voices but no one was around. it reminded me of when the Nazgul was coming down the path in the first LotR movie. kinda freaked me out.
I was having some very evil thoughts and I heard something call my name. "Oh Adam" just like that. Scared the living hell out of me.
But I freely admit that it may have been my imagination. Or scizophrenia. I think you have to accpet that possibilitty to keep your self honest at least.
yeah... i hate when you hear voices in your head. i keep thinking people are calling my name but no one is. i think that some people just hear so much about an area that they let what they've heard become real. i expereince it sometimes when i'm running a soundboard, sometimes i'll think there is a hum but no one else hears it.... i think ppl just build somethings up to much until in their mind it is true. that's why i never said that story until now... i wasn't really sure if it was in my head or not, though i think i was the first that had that happen on that stretch of trail (all the more reason to say it was in my head
It's a fine line. I want to believe very badly, and I do some what, but I try to keep myself grounded a little too.
it is a VERY fine line. that's why if i go hunting i want to do it in a group. and with a camcorder. that way i at least can prove something and if someone else sees it then i know i'm not the only crazy one at least :)
My campus is one of the most haunted in the nation, we have lots of ghosts and weird stuff that goes on all the time. And since we're a small school, around 1500, that's quite a lot of ghosts to go around for everyone.
There has been extensive research in the paranormal. Alot of the southern states and the east coast have more history and therefore have more paranormal activity. I think alot of the smaller communities have more recorded paranormal encounters because it travels from person to person much easier and the smaller communities are not as fast as big cities.
Louisiana is supposed to have a fair amount of paranormal activity. I haven't seen any of it, not for lack of trying.
Yes to build over certain areas can cause problems. But most of the time a place is haunted and people don't know about it.
There are places in my country which are believed to be haunted but at the same time there are places which are haunted and people don't know, like there are places which are supposed to be haunted but they're a rumor.
I am originally from Cincinnati Ohio and when I lived there I had encountered many paranormal activities not sure if you would exactly call it hauntings!
Also a paranormal activity can happen even without the building to be old or built on a haunted land.
Example,I had paranormal activity at my parents' house, and it is new and the land is not haunted no one ever saw anything, and I've never expirienced anything paranormal, but still for a whole year I had paranormal activity.
It wasn't a poltergeist made by me,it had to do with spirits cause the same thing happened the same year,to some people I know, without doing something before. They just happened for a reason.
sometimes it isn't a house but an item that is haunted... i heard a story of one lady getting a bed for her son that was haunted by the spirit of a young boy that watched his mother die in the bed. it became a poltergeist and trashed the son's room and they got rid of the bed and nothing has happened in their house since from what i've heard
could be... i've heard of ppl being oppressed because of something they did, like burning a satanic bible once really messed with a guy and he wasn't sleeping at all and his work ethic was going down... supposedly he hadnt slept for weeks until he had someone pray over him
In that case they're not chosen.
When I said chosen I meant to have a paranormal activity happen to you without doing nothing to ''invite'' it.
Those people in a way deserved cause they were like playing with fire.
In that case you're not chosen but risking it.
good point.
it'd be really weird to be chosen though. i'm completely agreeing that it is possible but i don't think it would actually manifest itself until you triggered it somehow, kinda leading into the discussion on ouija boards.
I believe the reason you hear of more occurrences in small towns is due to the fact in this type of setting people in general know each other and talk more frequently then in big cities. At the same time you have to take into consideration the makeup of the population as well. Speaking in generalities only in smaller towns you are more apt to find "countrified" people who are more superstitious then those living in big cities.
Just for the record I now live in a middle size city in the south. I have lived in a very large Northwestern city and until I was 12 lived in a town in West Virgina where in my little "holler" was may be 70 people.
I think so. Alot of places have a long and gruesome history, I bet most stories are real.
Yes the point of the small cities is good.
I live in a small country and in almost every place there are these stories.
I never thought about spirits before, because we were the first familly to live in our house. It occurs to me now though that two room "chicken house" at the edge of the property used to be someone's home years ago. Maybe there are spirits there or in the barn.
Those are excellent points about the difference between small towns and citys btw.
I would think it would be caused by those buried there. It could possibly be their spirit, or some other higher being trying to tell people something. I also think it's because of the small population, for in larger cities there are so many people the spirits maybe become confused, or simply wish to leave.
It's not just spirits though. People in my communitty claim to have seen big foot and every other damn thing out there.
Suppesedlly twenty years ago they were having a problem with big foot and bulletts bounced of his chest(I'm not making this up) And when they found it's cave there were bones and a make shift halter from all the cows and pigs it led off to slaughter.
Oh we get all types of stories. I think only the lack of a decent sized lake prevents frm having the locke ness monster with a southern accent.
my grandparents live in an old plantation in WV and supposedly the ghost of the mail man haunts the place because he was in love with my great great aunt. (i don't believe a word of it but i wouldn't be surprised if something was going on there)
I think a lot of the stories are made up but i have had my share of experiences, so i think its a 50-50 situation.
my opinion on the population has a direct impact on hauntings is cause stories pread faster in small areas, and if you think about it, of course you area has alot of hauntings, alot of the civil war deaths were in that area, and the state with the most hauntings is kansas, that is why it is known as blody kansas, lol, but in truth now days we have less, the most we have is BTK murder wise, but hauting wise there are a ton, look up Stall, Kansas, i hope i spelt that correct
Every one has made good points so far. Something else that crosses my mind though: The deeath toll is a lot higher in larger cities, so are NY's for example more jaded to the paranormal, or do they just not have as many hoaxes as a small town?
well ghost stories are met esspecially in the old counties...it's natural after all
i dont think it's a connection between the number of ppl and the stories. it's all about their beliefs
I live in Rhode Island, USA. While it is the smallest of all the states, it has several interesting stories including two women that were believed to be vampires back in the 1800's. They lived in different areas of the state but died around the same time period. Both bodies were exhumed at a later time period because of the gossip going around that people had seen the woman and later died mysteriously. The womens bodies showed very little signs of decay. To this day, people still claimt o see them.
oh this is so my area. Doing construction over an area where someone has died can cause some major paranormal activity.
Well.. As one of the top 3 growers of marijuana in these United States, I think ya'll are bound to see some weird stuff.
ha ha ha
lol
But seriously. There is an empty cornfield and some nights you hear shit moving around and you feel like there is someone or someting just lurking in the shadows. And it's been an nights when I'm not stoned. And supposedly there have been battles during either the frech revolution or civil wars. I'm not sure. But I don't doubt there is paranormal activity. If I believe there are things such as vampires or werewolves. Why would I not believe in such things.
This wasn't me being baked and zoning out.
With any group of people you get stories -add bordom- and you get more stories
The town that I live is is also very haunted. I'm not sure if population has anything to do with it though. The town where I live has a pop. of around forty thousand. This town is crawling with supernatural activity. I have visited some of the hauted place in and around Kentucky, espically southers portions like Burnside, Sommerset, and Pineknot.
I think the midwest in general is haunted he he
Lol I don't get drunk nor high but I've heard and seen certain things.
I think in small towns the stories stay around longer for some reason. Strange shit happens everywhere. Even in my apt!!
yeah there..is..most heavy populated areas have more gohst stories..because most gosht stories where spread bye ingorent poeple..the greater the hauntings the more morons there are
idiot one says he sees a goshst
idiot two beleivs him then idiot two tells idiot three and then sudnely one thusand dumasses say thet say a gohst
in reality there are most likely very few real hauntings
poupulation doesent mean a thing u can have a town city state country be haunted by some form of paranormal creature if something hjappend there or if someone cursed it so its just a mater of figuring out wtf happen when u weret there
true true..you can have a small town..but as i said..theres "paranormal" and real accounts...i dont put to much stalk in small town lore...some of it is true..and at times you can find real stories of the unatural..but like i said..ninety percent of all gohst stories are well...stories...
real..paranormal..acounts..i would say population has a little to do with it...but history and even geology can factor
the bermuda triangal is a big example..there is absolutly no one living out in it..but it sure as hell is paranormal
in any case in terms of hauntings...as i said..sift threw all the moronic dribble the bull..the fake spook stories and there are some real ones..some promisisng ones...
i guess it depends
In every town of a country there aret hse rumors.
Some are true most aren't.
I agree most places have some sort of paranormal activity occuring
though how absurd the rumours may become is based on the people who are willing to believe... and how believeable the person who is saying it happened is.
The smaller the community the more likely its inhabitants will belive rumors. I have traveled to several of of these communities that boast such paranormal activities and left somewhat unimpressed.
tis true what the guy above me said the smaller the community
I live in Pudsey in rural England very boring but lots of activity
When a community is smaller these kind of rumors are more popular cause te people know each other more.
Living in a big one,it's difficult and most of them won't believe it.
When you live in a small town and you hear for example that there's a haunted house, you'll start to imagine that it can happen something into your home,if you beleive it.
When it is a big town,it's more difficult to get impressed cause the town would be big.So you would say:It's far away from me,so no need to get afraid.
Also there's the possibility that people of small towns maybe want to attract foreigners to get business from them or the opposite they want the people of that town only and no strangers to invade their town.
Or it's because most of the times small towns are older.
Even mentality has to do with it.I noticed that people who live in small towns tend to belive in these things more.Am not pointing my finger at anyone and saying, all it's just that's how it seams to be to me.
I know cause I live in a small country and town myself.
I live in South Carolina but the town I'm from has lil activityu while as others in the state have huge it all depends and it also has to do with the whole 50 50 shot in the dark wether to believe or not..
I myself have seen and encountered quite a few ghost in my days here on earth.I seem to attract them to me a medium if you will..I can't count the number of entities that has contacted me over the years..
And Adam I have to say that when you hear your name being called do not answer it unless you see it or the person calling you..Maybe myth but I've always heard bad things come from unseen voices when answered you allow whatever to be able to work through you or against you..
i think alot of the people claim they see things are foole by what they actualy see...
the mind plays tricks with what we precieve..we might think we see something paranormal but in truth its nothing but a trick of the light or an influence from someone else..its easy to think we see what others saw even if we really dont...
i can make myself see purple elephants..but it doesnt mean they are there
Very true but real paranormal activity is not to be exluded either.
The fact that more paranormal activity is reported in some areas may just reflect how willing people are to accept that it is actually paranormal. In areas that are more 'developed', people seem too busy, for lack of a better word, to stop and consider. Just a thought. I don't know too much from a statistical standpoint, but it's something to think about.
I live in a mid sized town in Ontario Canada, And there are a lot of stories of hauntings and paranormal activity. So me and my friends went hunting and some of the places nothing happened but other times you just had a feeling.
Now when you live in a smaller town gossip and stories travel a lot faster then in a bigger city. But I live near a major city and they have a website stating all of thier haunted places.
For those of you who would like to look it is
www.hauntedhamilton.com
We even went on a haunted walk once and it was a very good night.

I live in a very small town, and we do not have alot of actual stories so to say but I have been to several places that I can say I KNOW are indeed haunted. Now the town here is small but the population is not. I don't know that I necissarily think that size has anything to do with the actual hauntiungs themselves. Perhaps, it is vise versa perhaps the towns are small because of the hauntings. Just a random thought for ya.
We have a strange amount of paranormal out here but I think that when someone wants to settle down and die they tend to head towards a small area where people are more spread out. They tend to feel so peacful there that their spirits won't leave and more and more tend to gather there.
I used to live in Davison Mi. The town used to be called Davisburg or something similar, and was actually moved because of a fire. The place I live in outside of downtown had a lot of activity. I believe the amount of activity has to do the past events and what happened there. Listen around town for stories or do a little research.
I live in Arizona and there is a small town out to the east of me called Queen Creek and there is a Indian Reservation like south of that and some of the homes are being built n old burial ground and my aunt lives out in Queen Creek there are many spirits in her home and it is because of her house over that burial ground that there is disturbance there in her home the burial fround out here is part of the veil and spirits pass back and forth from there as well there is alot of paranormal stuff going out here to Sedona is to be said a portal of such power to the many planes and worlds it has a high vibration that and there is alot of UFOs to have been seen around Sedona but I agree with most on this thread~NFA
No, but there is a correlation between superstitious beliefs and education.
I live just over the river from Liverpool in England, and I have to say we have alot of paranormal activitys over here.
I read a series of books called Haunted Liverpool, and so far there are around 14 books by the aurthor, with only one or 2 stories repeated.
Apparently in liverpool city centre, there are time slips, people walk up the street for it to turn into a 1940's street, there is a church which got bombed in wwII, the outside is pretty much in tact but the inside was destroyed, and people claim to hear organ music coming out from it.
There are also reports that the devil has appeared in the city several times (in the last 50 years) taking several people with him.
There has been reports of paranormal activity for aslong as there has been comunication. Ghosts are reported in the bible, and many indiginous (sp) populations around the world, who have never made contact with other tribes, have many similaritys in their beliefs about the paranormal (dragons, spirits and fairys being just a few of them)
to me, that says their must be some truth to it all.
I don't think population has anything to do with it. I think it has to do more with how much tragedy a town has had. Any place where there is alot of violent death, suicide, etc..is where most of the paranormal activity takes place.
hauntings and or entities tend to be drawn to places or persons with a high anount of energy. if you brought someone with the ability to se energy lines and centers (the kind that occur naturally) into the area where you are i would be willing to bet money that there is a high concentration of natural energy in that area
Well, I live near Jamestown Va. They filmed the movie "The New World" about 10 min from my house. The area has been a part of the Reveloutionary War, Civil War, and various Native and Slave uprisings. A plantation near my home burned during the Civil War, and was never rebuilt. Yorktown Battlefield has tons of things out there, fighters who never left the field to slaves going down the tobacco road to the ships at the old harbor. Colonial Williamsburg started doing ghost tours in the 90's due to all the stories being told by the locals.
One thing that is freaky as hell out here, Colonial Parkway. It goes between Yorktown and Jamestown, and run by the national park service. In the 80's there were a series of murders, mostly of young couples out "parking". After 4 years the murders stopped. The FBI was involved but no one was ever caught for the crime. People still don't drive down the parkway at night. There was an X-Files episode dealing with it (or based on it). I'm one of the few who's still here who's old enough to remember when it happened. 2 of my mother's friends were victims.
Still, on occasion you'll find me on a warm and cloudy autumn day with the top down playing "red right hand" by Nick Cave
i live in jersey, the most densely populated state, and there are still a lot of messed up things going on in the paranormal sense. i have about six "weird new jersey" things (including places to sight ghosts) to check out within twenty minutes of my home.
I don't think that there is a relative connection with the population size compared with paranormal activity. If anything it could appear that because of fewer people and the mechanics of rural areas, that when one person sees/hears/experiences the paranormal they are more comfortable in expressing it and that it spreads like wildfire amongst the inhabitants and hence more likely to be reported and/or recorded.
Areas of higher population tend to have less trust and so more speculation against the word of one another. Though as others have stated who dwell in highly populated areas the paranormal activity still runs rampant.
I live in a moderately populated area though we do have extensive rural areas as well. Paranormal activity runs rampant all through the counties here though...
I live in NY on long Island and we have our fair share of odd places and hauntings. I love all that stuff. However you always here of weird happenings in tiny out of the ways towns.
Once when i was 6 i saw shadows walking across my hallway wall. I checked for anything that could cast the shafows but there were no windows...I freaked out and hid in my room. I saw them go in to my mums room ran in and they weren't there. I saw the same thing in the bush as well.
Recently I have read about people who saw the same thing.
::nods:: yup. the whole ghost story thing runs rampant around here. so much so that it's hard to tell who knows what the fuck they're talking about and who's bull shiting.
It all depends. The moors are lonely, isolated, and quiet well known for paranormal activity. However, a crowded city like London has a lot of weird stuff happening, too. Maybe it has to do with ethnic background. Celtic people are renowned for their psychic abilities. Another interesting theory has to do with geomancy--the idea that there are "lines of force" running across our planet that channel psychic energies. Where ever these "ley lines" run, that's where supernatural occurrences tend to happen, regardless of population density. Another theory holds that psychic trauma creates paranormal disturbances, so places where a lot of bad shit happened (e.g., houses in which suicides or murders occurred) tend to be paranormally active. If this theory is true, then the old locations of the Nazi death camps should be the most haunted places on earth! Other investigators explain high-intensity psychic locales as the result of the magnetic currents running through the area; the kinds of mineral deposits occurring in a specific location; the astrological influences prevalent in an area at a given time, etc., etc., etc., there are a million theories! Who knows? Just enjoy your weird Kentucky surroundings, get the most from them, and maybe you'll be the one who discovers the definitive answer to this interesting question.
I agree with Soul, it doesn't matter whether the area is vastly populated or devoid of people. If something occured on in that area that left an imprint its going to have paranormal activity.
