I'm posting this here instead of the Sandbox because I think it's important...just like everything else in our society today the Vampire is being degraded; the Vampire is being diluted. The Vampire was once the Prince of The Night, to be feared, mysterious, powerful and ruthless, a demi-god walking the earth! The Vampire was the outsider apart from the rest of man and in many ways superior to him.

And what do we have now? "Oh let's run and play and we'll sparkle in the sun...tra la la...la la....here...let me run up a tree with you...how are you doing in algebra class?" "oh oh oh, I don't feed on people. I snack on kitties." They are making The Vampire an unhappy Teddy Bear...they are making him mainstream...they are making him...*almost throws up*...normal...accepted *gag gag gag*...part of society.

I used to be proud...but I will tell you the truth...I'm starting to be embarrassed...the name TheMightVampyreTu is starting to sound cute..."Do you think he sparkles in the sun too?" This is a travesty...just another sissifying of our culture...you should be ashamed.

Hey hey hey Werewolves...they are not treating you any better!

It's because as a modern society, we discard the gods and kingdoms of old. We tell children about these places, people, and creatures in bedtime stories. Or to scare them straight.

We live in the era of science vs. everything , and if something is debunkable for lack of scientific proof that won't be laughed at, it is then a myth. And not tangible.

So why would anyone in mainstream society, respect what they consider a dying subculture?

Why not profit off of it before it fizzles out completely or is in the process of being transformed/rearranged/revamped?

~sorry for the pun~ lol

I don't know how to determine if it's a dying subculture or not...I think you hit on a main point...no respect.

from than to know things has changed so much it is hard to grab a concept on it at times but the point was hit lack of respect and the world today is all about science and stuff
as people are concerned that is what maters now days they don't belive the same anymore as people in the old days

as of sparkling in the sun i have to agree that is bs no one sparkles in the sun like that but how ever the movie's about vampire's in general could be concidered bs now days they make vampires sound fake that is also another reason why
cause the way they make vampire's in the movies that is not what a vampire is and people now days see that

There should be a respect for the character portrayed, not any type of community-esque "culture" that lives with the mythos tied in with every day or in the vampires case, night.

Yes, the fanciful portrayal of the vampire has become dilutted, only because the "sub-culture" called the "vampire community" wishes to have the vampire accepted within the "main stream" (what ever the hell that is) population.

It goes along the lines of a question: Would you rather be feared, or respected? Seems as though this question has a bit of a broad range to it. Does fear bring respect, or do cutsie little S.O.B.'s such as the Twilight character: Edward Cullen, who sparkles only from his chest? Which in my opinion is a major flaw, if he sparkles from his chest, should he not then sparkle from the rest of his epidermis? I mean come now.

Would modern society rather fear the timeless vampire of old? Or succumb to the ways of light hearted vampires of this day and age? Where does the boundary lay? Very good questions, which may not have any answers since this is a very broad subject in its own right.

PORKCHOP, TELL HIM WHAT HE'S WON!!

Well, mean ole Mr. Tu, you have won the percetive eye that most of society is selfish and ignorant in their ways and adapt persona's and scenerio's because of this trait. I would not call it quality since the term quality referes to something good in all human kind.

When the mundane population (and I use term mundane to describe the whole of the world, not for roleplay purposes)gets tired of the same old humdrum, the monotany of their lives, they need a refresher. Unfortunately for history, culture, and classic depictions, the infamous turn mediocre and dismal, then are re-vamped (pun intended) to the satisfaction of the crowd.

Thus is the way of things, a remake of a remake of a remake. Much like what seems to be happening in the theatre world as of late. Old movies being remade and re-vamped, just look at Halloween, Friday the 13th, and now Nightmare on Elm Street (look it up on comingsoon.net).

mr tu you make a point with what you are meaning take away the fear you take away the fun but if i am not mistaken when they took kong of the island it added to the fear to begin with cause to a lot of people he was not heard of until the end than it was a lot of heart break with the people in the movie

you also make a vaild point vvSoulshroudevv
with what you said on things just now

Again about Kong...the island people thought having Kong gone would be a good thing...until he was gone...the excitement of life went with him. The same applies to this watering down of Vampires and Werewolves.

Does one go to Vampire movies to feel good? Why go to any movie that might scare you? Remember the first time as a youngster you walked into that biker bar? Would that have been better if there had been no fear? Hell...why ride a roller coaster if it may scare you? Fear is excitement...a major component. We have become obsessed with making everything safe...Ah ha ha ha haaa...a safe vampire...Oooooo what fun and excitement! It needs to stop...and right now!

I feel thats a bad call, yet everyone has a voice in everything and I respect that, I mean everything has it safe ground for each level of maturity, If I can recall "30 days of nights" is a movie not so far from present motion picture production, and yet it reflect that side you guys intend to save in the vampire imagery or portrayal. Twilight is just a hype for a group of individual and it was meant for that type of things in the industry, it just serve as the same level as Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.. It is not turning into a safe ground nor innovative conception at all is just a posture of the Author imagination, yes! that movie shift the conception a little to far from the originals, but: Live and let live; their is Sesame Street, there is Power Rangers, there is Ben 10 and then there is Twilight, all aim to different focal point in the industry ( all aiming for $), to say is diluting the vampire imagery from Fear to Lame is to say the Count in Sesame Street serve the same fine as Twilight in their conception.

One of the best indeed, Its one of the brutal concepts in the vampire portrayal in a long time I might say. They did well indeed. Yet I might admit that- given that twilight has sold more tickets than "30DON" ever did, it could turn to be a drastic concern in the new aiming as for directors in future film production, lets hope not everyone aim to sell-out but to inspire originality without sacrificing tradition.

Hmm, 30 days of night was more like a gore horror more then anything. If we are to be discussing relations between classics such as Dracula 1931 with old Bela, then I would have to reference Interview With The Vampire, myself. it is both predatorial as well as elegantly Dracula in its own right. But far removed from Twilight and its pedophilic cousin Vampire Diaries.

At least Lestat nor Louis for that matter wanted physical relations with Claudia, I mean hell.. A high school crush from a vampire that is like 500 years old? Come on now. Dracual nor Interview were like this at all. At least they had the decency to percieve the vampire in a some what respectable light.

vvSoulshroudevv makes a point what i think is 30 day's of night was one of the worst out of all them i mean come on look at it on how they pertrayed them in any other vampire movie there mouth did not open up as far the grand canyon it is the same way with blade 2 it might have been an ok movie but still they were fake like the rest but more so(so i will stick with what i said it has to stop but like was said people never want to hear the truth well at least most people don't

Fake? they are all fake, reality is in the designer hand to create in their perception what could be portrayed as reality. If it came to that I would rather choose: Moonlight series from all the above, in reflection of a "real based vampire" You all began talking about Fear and the correlation in a vampire, now you looking for new safe grounds between Reality and a sip of fear, falling again in Twilight. Houston we got a problem.

everyone thinks different i know i am only 14 but vampire movies now day's is all about the gore and the sex but vvSoulshroudevv is right i have seen both interview with a vampire (that is my favorite movie) and i have also seen near dawn they are not all about that stuff what i think is interview with a vampire is the closest thing to the truth about what a vampire is cause it goes into what is fake and what is real both through out the whole movie to a point so does near but only to a point and i am not so sure if the world is ready to hear or even know the truth to be honest with you so i believe it should stay the way it is until the world can handle knowing the truth though my dad vamp91 made the comment that people should know the truth but ask your self this what would happen if the people knew the truth about it

~Firmement~ I think you are missing the point of the chosen term "fake." It is about the pre-concieved notion about what the vampire has to offer and not "fake" blade movies where the vampire kills at every turn based on an action adventure comic book series of the same name. Which is far from reality.

The point that seems to have a hard time coming across is that the "traditional" portrayal has turned into "fake" sensationalised squall of glittery idiots, regenerating body parts (not like lestats heal all to the face mind you, since he was still pretty mangled from the swamps aftermath, thus not as FAKE as the rest), and several other differant things that I cannot think of at this time... What ever happened to tradition, I think is the point that is trying to come to light.

We cannot help it if we are old timers, living in a neo-society where most of society wants "trendy" movies based on new viewpoints as to what the vampire never was in the first place.

I see, well is all about adaptability cause if those interested in old films are not in the director game we are far from watching anything traditional anymore, I guess what it sell is what it goes and if it came to that we are screwed, not only in the vampire conception, but the whole idea that they are integrating werewolves as the villains too.

I would not nessessarily call it "srewed", it seems a bit daunting the way you delivered your post ~Firmament~. A very pessemistic way to ponder. There are few and far between vampire movies out there that are well made and deserving of recognition, such as Dracula, Interview, Subspecies, Razor Blade Smile, Near Dark and a couple of other titles that I cannot think of off hand. But while we are waiting for more classy flicks to hit the big screen, we will go back to our books and wait while the hype dies down on cheesy movies such as Twilight.

I have to agree with you guys on the Twilight garbage. Summed up in the phrase: "real vampires don't sparkle." I never watched the movie, but an ex tried to get me to read the first book. Couldn't get past the first chapter, the writer is a horrible author, IMO. Writes more mature-ish subject matter, but in a style that seems more for 4th graders. I haven't seen any of the classic movies since I was really little, I need to look them up again. Another theme with vampires going around lately that bugs me is that vampires are a genetic mutation or something. I prefer the 'uknowness' of the vampire condition, or the mystical idea.

Well, dare I start this way and not offend everyone... The truth that society and majority of the users on this site are not "ready" for is that there's no such thing as vampires as we as a society have come to know through literture and movies, etc... It is, simply put, a creature based on mythogy. The dillution of said creature/character I think has stemmed partially from a world too pre-occupied with becoming overly PC. It sucks...pun intended

I don't think anyone in this discussion was under the delusion that vampires were a real life, real creature. Only concerned of the watering down of the stories, turning it into carnival of degrassi-esque high school romance garbage. They did the same thing to Superman with Smallville.

Oh give me bram stokers Dracula any day. I rather the concept that a vampire is a hunter, top of the food chain and something to both admire and fear...

I can fear or admire a sparkling vampire sorry to say, regardless of modern day needs to improve the vampire image.

Give me the classic vampire, the nosferatu that makes you jump at the sound of a scratch at your window...

What is going to be next, tame werewolves that you can walk in public on a leash as the ultimate fashion accessory?

None of these movies were produced to give a *real* depiction of a vampire- they were all written as fiction.

If Twilight has done anything, it's made everyone talk about it. Even those who hate it keep giving it more and more publicity. The threads never stop here, and people keep posting. And so... another person goes to read because they want to know for themselves. 'No such thing as bad publicity', as Cancer once said regarding a site that made fun of Vampire Rave.

We are talking about Hollywood. They are not interested in an accurate depiction or a classic one either. They are interested in money. And if Twilight sells then we might as well brace ourselves for an onslaught of cute, sensitive vampire movies.
Vampire movies aren't being made by vampires so there is no need in the eyes of the filmmakers to understand their subject. The aren't interested in the question of respect or fear. What will sell? That is the motivation for them.

The Count on Sesame Street and then Count Chocula cereal were the first signs of this degradation. Alas, no one would listen, the portents were ignored, and those who stood by and shrugged their shoulders have now borne the burden of their ignorance: their children want to fuck shimmering vampires, and not in the good old-fashioned way. These post-modern vampires have perversely twisted Dracula's long drawn out suction of Mina's blood into something akin to a fast, a vegan rite, a festival of vampiric self-loathing! *shakes head* It's so wrong.

I will say I have been here two other times...the first being many...many years ago. I remember when I'd speak of The Vampire Rave I'd get strange looks...those "Are you some kind of nut?" looks...*sighs*...how I cherished that...now...that's gone...now...I hear how they've read "Twilight" and then once was jokingly asked to step into the sun so they could see me sparkle...ha. The difference you ask? The first made me one to be weary of...perhaps a little feared and definitely kept an eye on. The second? Well...I had to kill them...what else could I do?

Being outside of society can...at times...be lonely,,,but I always felt a fierce pride being there...now...it's like I'm being dragged into the maelstrom against my will...and you old timers that know me...know that doesn't sit well.

First off, thank you for starting a thread that has been around practically forever. This topic is getting old.

Second, you obviously hate it. So, it's getting a reaction out of you. Guess what~ that was Stephenie Meyer's goal since book one!

Third, I want to know if you have bothered to read it, or just decided you hated the fad that was going around, because I love Twilight and even I find the popularity of it utterly annoying.
If you have tried to read the books, then I respect you for giving it a chance. But no one has a right to hate something they've never tried.

Fourth, I highly doubt that ANYONE actually believes that vamps actually exsist- much less sparkle!
We are still safe. Trust me.
Society today is too insecure with their own issues to pay attention to us.
I intend to keep it that way, just like most vamps today

personally, I admire the author for going out on such a limb. Pulling out a view of vampires that is absolutly rediculus.... But. I love the story line.. And if it wasn't for the sparkle factor I'd say the books were perfect for the younger audiences out there. Almost like how they took the real farietale stories and made them better. I mean seriously has anyone ever read the real versions of cinderella and peter pan? They are really grusome.. but they were toned down for the child audiences. And if you look at it from that point of view she did a good job at makeing vampires the safe bed time story for children.

vampchica4 makes a point on things how can you hate something you have never tried and twilight was a preatty good movie other than the whole sparkling vampire thing that was just bull shit right there and as said before other post above this one people now days don't want to know the truth cause they are afraid of it and most just can't handle the truth and another thing the world now days belong to the youth aka the kids not us old timers and the filmmakers know this so that is another reason why they make the movies about vampires the way they do they do it for the kids not the adults how ever sad it may be it is the truth but i still stick with what i said one of my above post it needs to stop the truth needs to be told but i also know that it is not likely to happen

vampchic4...one...I have not been here for years...excuse my ignorance of not knowing what has been posted here in my absence. Two...yes I've read all three novels and have seen the first movie...will I see the second? Perhaps...the females have some great racks...so probably...Oh ho ho ho don't confuse that I actually like all those neatly wrapped up happy endings...because I assure you...I do not. And third...thank you...it's nice to know dregs still reside here...what great fun you might be.

I mean...come on...after one has faced the government...divorce....divorce again...sometimes divorce yet again...the folk lore/Myths are a yawn! By the time one hits middle age they've seen real horrors lol. I say scare them when they're young! One is actually being kind in preparing them for the real demons that await...no?

me for one would like to see the truth out there but that will never happen at least not in my life time cause as stated in a above post the world can't handle the truth about things know matter how much me or anyone else dislikes it things will keep going the way they are if not get worse until the world can handle knowing what a real vampire is and even to a point the old vampire movies was bull shit but at least they added the fear in with them and not all the sex and gore of things but know if it is not the gore it is the sex or even both of them in same movie i mean if add a little more sex in some of these vampire movies now days it will be more like a soft porn than anything else and as it is most of the ones they make now is not sutible for kids to watch

I really didn't care much for the portrayal of the Cullens either, but other than the goal of profit margin, she started a new generation of Vampire Lovers.
It at least it keeps them (Vampires ) Immortalized and alive, and as those fans grow they will venture to more notorious themed Vampires.
Vampire Dairies is a little more like it for the teen audience and adults as well.
Evil killer vs good vampire and brothers at odds even better!
And lets what to see how Burton & Depp turn the audiences.

The sparkling was the least onerous aspect of Twilight for me. The idea of some vampires being able to tolerate light makes sense to me. Their powers are not all the same.

Also, the adolescent sexual hungering and the vampire denial is classic bad boy/good girl behavior.

Have you ever wondered why Dracula sucked Lucy dry on a first go, but lingered over Mina for days?

~Vampchica~, you seem to contradict yourself in your post saying that the vampire is not real, and yet you claim to be one at the end of it. Which one is it? Are you alluding to the vampire not existing within the eye, that they are hiding for a reason as not to be realized by the society that degrades them so?

As well, there are a couple of childish posts from certain parties that seem to want vampiric interaction... Now, why would you wish to involve a true vampire into the discussion when this thread is NOT about true vampires, but about theatrical movies gone arry from classic to sensationalised.

This thread has NOTHING to do with the vampire populous, just vampiric movies which are based on FICTION and FANTASY.

I think the twilight movie was aimed at the younger audience so it was given restrictions, also the romance side of the idea sells more to those who prefer that side of things, maybe they could turn it more interesting in future movies which i hope will be the case

and just to say, im approaching 16
to me, the books are amazing. Its as simple as that.
My friend is over thirty, and she loves them just as much as I do

(And thank you for giving the books/ movie a chance)

all these points will be in my mind next year, after I finish my poetry novel and begin to write and hopefully publish my own vampire novel

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Yes, the Twilght books are "watered" down vampire stories. Isn't every Anne Rice book "watered" down as well? Not many here is hasn't enjoyed them for years. The original vampire stories told of ugly, fearsome creatures with long grotesque finger nails. What Stephanie Myers has done with her work is a natural progression of what has been happening for over thirty years easy.

The Twilight books were fine. Well written stories, though not exactly my cup of Jack Daniels. It is the movie I find fault with. From the supposedly cute actors to the media coverage of their cute romances and overindulgences. Sorry, they turned the characters into caricatures.

The point of Twilight was to sell a product, and that product just happened to be vampires. As long as people have a fascination with something that has the quality of a dangerous beauty, it will be packaged and sold to the world. No matter how much the vampire community pissed and moans about being portrayed as hot dangerous creatures, it won't stop someone like the creator of Twilight or any other author for that matter in watering down the vampire image for their own personal gain.

All of the vampires in Rice's Vampire Chronicles are beautiful and romantic almost without exception. That is the watered down I was referring to not the fact that there are many instances of cruel or gruesome acts happening.

I am trying to think of a vampire movie...or book...that is totally void of what you consider watering dow. Even 30 Days of Night has a scene where the head female vampire is shown kindness (love?) after she is burned. Stokers Dracula was filled with such things as love and romance. I think this depends on how far one takes it...is there a example of vampires not showing a loyalty to their own kind? A love? Such things are even in Dusk To Dawn. I have not seen where a vampire has been portrayed as a creature totally void of emotion. Please...an example of what you speak?

Lestat was full of romance...deadly romance...not with Claudia but with his victims...the two whores in the flat were wined and dined by him...he did romance them and in his way he did love Louis and Claudia.

Are you saying early Bella had no hint of romance in it? I've never seen the movie in it's entirety but what I have seen sure smacks of Rices idea of vampire romance.

I don't remember for sure if there was none it has been awhile since I have seen it though I have the movie but I was just saying that it is the closest thing to what we were talking about if you watch the 1931 verison that is the original dracula it is a lot better than stokers or the other verisons out there and blows all these other movies like 30 days of night and stuff out of the water

One of the original movies regarding dracula/vampires was Nosferatu, an old black and white silent film adaptation of the genre. Bram Stokers Dracula adapted its format from this movie, but sensationalised it into a romantic predator instead of the dark predator as described in Nosferatu.

There was a film made in 2000 called "Shadow of the Vampire" which was a fictional account of the making of Nosferatu. In it, the actor Max Shreck, who played the vampire, is actually the real thing. The movie wasn't bad though the original screenplay was even better. They dropped some key scenes and characters when they made the movie.
There was also a Mexican version of the 1931 Todd Browning/Bela Lugosi film that was made at night using the same sets that the American film was using during the day. It basically followed the same script but is actually a superior film. And I say that despite the affection I have for the Lugosi version.

I know one early time Vampire Lord Byron Byron

He was expelled from his own nation due to his act was vamping.

Saul by Lord Byron
Thou whose spell can raise the dead,
Bid the prophet's form appear.
'Samuel, raise thy buried head!
King, behold the phantom seer!'

Earth yawn'd; he stood the centre of a cloud:
Light changed its hue, retiring from his shroud.
Death stood all glassy in his fixed eye:
His hand was wither'd, and his veins were dry;
His foot, in bony whiteness, glitter'd there,
Shrunken and sinewless, and ghastly bare;
From lips that moved not and unbreathing frame,
Like cavern'd winds, the hollow acccents came.
Saul saw, and fell to earth, as falls the oak,
At once, and blasted by the thunderstroke.

'Why is my sleep disquieted?
Who is he that calls the dead?
Is it thou, O King? Behold,
Bloodless are these limbs, and cold:
Such are mine; and such shall be
Thine to-morrow, when with me:
Ere the coming day is done,
Such shalt thou be, such thy son.
Fare thee well, bur for a day,
Then we mix our mouldering clay.
Thou, thy race, lie pale and low,
Pierced by shafts of many a bow;
And the falchion by thy side
To thy heart thy hand shall guide:
Crownless, breathless, headless fall,
Son and sire, the house of Saul!'

I think I have a slanted opinion on this. I wrote The Black Diary (It's in my journal) - and I try to make it clear by the way I portray each of the vampire characters that the idea of good and evil - is all something that depends upon the person becoming the vampire.

There is no ultimate evil or good in men..why should there be in vampires? The characters show you, and even cause you to have some sympathy for them. Well..except for two of them..and they deserve the title of EVIL.

Have a look - and let me know what you think.
