Satan
proper name of the supreme evil spirit in Christianity, O.E. Satan, from L.L. Satan (in Vulgate, in O.T. only), from Gk. Satanas, from Heb. satan "adversary, one who plots against another," from satan "to show enmity to, oppose, plot against," from root s-t-n "one who opposes, obstructs, or acts as an adversary." In Septuagint (Gk.) usually translated as diabolos "slanderer," lit. "one who throws (something) across" the path of another (see devil), though epiboulos "plotter" is used once.
"In biblical sources the Hebrew term the satan describes an adversarial role. It is not the name of a particular character. Although Hebrew storytellers as early as the sixth century B.C.E. occasionally introduced a supernatural character whom they called the satan, what they meant was any one of the angels sent by God for the specific purpose of blocking or obstructing human activity." [Elaine Pagels, "The Origin of Satan," 1995]
Satanic "pertaining to Satan" is first recorded 1667 (in "Paradise Lost"); meaning "diabolical" is from 1793. Satanism "worship of Satan" dates from 1896, with ref. to France, where it was said to be active at that time; Satanist is attested from 1559, applied by their enemies to Protestant sects.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=Satan&searchmode=none

Would anyone agree with this?
My prime example of
"what they meant was any one of the angels sent by God for the specific purpose of blocking or obstructing human activity"
would be:
Job Chapter 1 verses 1-12
1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.

Job's First Test
6 One day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan [b] also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."
Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

In the Hebrew context, he was more like a divine law giver. The Hebrew idea of Satan is quite different from the Christian idea of Him. In either case though, in those religions his character is confined to Gods will at all times. This is demonstrated numerous times in the Old Testament, and even in the New Testament with the temptation of Christ. He does not impede human activity..his purpouse in Gods so called plan is purification. The entire concept is really ludricrous..but thats another story.

Part of the etymology of the name/word Satan is the word Shaitan, coincidentally, one of the levels here.

"Shaitan" would be the Russian word for Satan, derived from Arabic, still holding the same presumed meaning though.

well in german Satan is called LUZIFER.
In the antiquity Luzifer was the name for the planet Venus.
in Babylon Venus was also called the "daily star, son of the dawn" or "morning star" or "evening star".
The Roman mythology Luzifer was known as a son of the Aurora, the goddess of morning redness.
In the Greek mythology the goddess Eosphorus and/or Eos were the counterpart to the Roman Aurora.
And also this goddess had a son, who was called Phosphoros (greek. "Lightbringer").
this equals the romanic Lucifer (lat. "lightbringer").
Foreseen in Jesaja 14,12 a falling down from heaven "ANGEL [actually CERUB,a keeper of the Paradise] of dawn" is been mentioned ,the leaders of churches kreated a parrael zu the romanic godness and gave them also the name
LUZIFER.
BUT :
In the Bible the term "Luzifer" does not emerge contrary to that of the "Satans"

" For such false apostles are deceitful workmen, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no wonder: for Satan himself transformeth himself into an angel of light." - 2 Corinthians 11:13-14

I compell you not to misinterpret this.

In the context this phrase is given where it is found in the Bible, along with coherent phrases, it is to express that Satan, as well as his angels and his mortal agents, take on the guise of an angel of light, sheding off his defying brilliance, yet withholding black ravenous hearts of deceit.

Hense,... no... I have doubts that Lucifer can be considered a 'god of enlightenment', let alone a God for that matter. ...

As you speak your 50 cents, I have spoken mine

Sameal (Hebrew, "Blindness of God") From the early centuries of the Common Era, the most common Jewish term for the Devil. He is identified with the snake that tempted Eve, and is the Guardian spirit of both the Roman Empire and Christianity. Together with Lilith, his spouse, he rules over the sitra achra, the "Other Side" or the realm of the powers of evil.

As with so much of the traditional lore, though, these neat summaries cover a chaos of alternative claims. Sameal is also the angel of death and, as such, a faithfil servant of God; he is the angel whom God sent to fetch the soul of Moses - in some sources, at least. In other writings, Sameal is the Angel of the planet Mars, or the Archangel of Geburah, the fifth Serphirah of the Cabalistic Tree of Life, though, this role is more often filled by Kameal instead. Nor is Lilith Samael's only mate; the demons Naamah, Agrat bat Mahlah, and Eisheth Zenunim are all described in various places as Samael's mate and as the queen of demons.

To add to the confusion, in Cabalistic lore, the Samael or Liars (Plural) are the Qlippoth or demonic powers associated with Hod, the Eighth Sephirah of the Tree of Life. Their traditional appearance is that of dull-colored dogs with heads of demons. Their cortex or realm in the Kingdom of Shells is called Theuniel, and their archdemon is Adramelek.

As an individual angel (or demon), Samael was borrowed by the Gnostics in the first three or four centuries of the Common Era as another name for Ialdabaoth, the ruler of the archons and creatore of the fallen material world.

Accroding to Cabalistic lore, whatever Samael's current relation to the divine, he is likely to end up on the right side eventually. At the end of the present cycle of time, Samael will repent and become an angel of holiness, and lose the letter Mem from his name; He will then be named Sael, which is one of the seventy-two holy names of God from the Shempamphorash. Mem Stands here for maveth, "death," and after his transformation death and suffering will be no more.

Satan was never originally thought of as evil. The first story of Lucifer's rebellion has Satan as his first right hand man. Lucifer and Satan as two different beings. There are few mentions of Satan in the bible but through the years the meaning have changed. Sataan was the original spelling in some of these mentions. And it was a code word for "Chaos," not Satan. Back then, the chaos theory was a very strong belief.
'Your God of Love and Righteous is strong but, His father ABBA will over come.' ABBA being the god of chaos. And since there is a spiritual kingdom, there must be a planetary prince. And there was. It was a being that JC was dealing with, not Satan. Some have heard the wording of JC being the planetary prince or 'the prince,' this is why. But this way too much info for the common man of that time. And everything got thrown together. Some people will still say that; the devil, Lucifer, Satan, Sataan, planetary prince, and some of the names of Solomans demons are all one and the some.
The things some people just don't know!

"...the Hebrew term the satan describes an adversarial role...."
This role was also given to Lucifer. To play adversary to help Man with his spiritual growth. Sometimes it takes a very strong soul to play the bad guy - not evil. I believe they are both rooting for us, although they may not know exactly why.

The kingdom is not perfect, only the creator that made it is. As the story goes there was a rebellion, several I'm told. Politics in Heaven, funny. Lucifer's name is older than dirt, and Satan's name has been overly used for too many years. I personally do not believe in evil. But there is always bad judgement, even in heaven.
Look at WW2, we had one hell of a bad guy but, look at what good came from it. People here helping each other where without him, there would not be that opportunity to do so.
We are on this planet for learning experiences and spiritual growth. For that to happen, there must be a platform to work off of.
For some reason, many in heaven do not know what this Earth project is really about. And everyone 'up there' wants to help. 110% free will is new, and many beings are curious to see what happens.
I do not believe any great being is out to get me.

I agree that the fallen angels are also following gods plan....if I were to believe in the christian mythos at all that is..
for if as they say god is omnipotent...then he would have known right from the start that the war in heaven would occur...and why...and the outcomes...meaning he orchestrated it himself....

Great discussion

I get confused over the whole belief that if God is omnipotent then why can't he just kill Satan and eliminate all evil.

The whole story of Job is basically God making a bet with the devil by messing with some poor guy's life.

Is Satan, the same as Baal, Lucifer, or the Devil or can they be different people?

"one who opposes, obstructs, or acts as an adversary."

could mean anyone

Baal is a bit different. Baal just means Lord. Different areas had the location added to the end. Baal-zebul, who became beezelbub, and Baal-peor, who later became Belphegor. The Cult of Baal was a rival to that of jehovah

If you wish to learn more about Demons. You may start with King Solomon's 72 Demons. You will find that they were not considered the same as some are mentioning. Lucifer and Satan are not the same either. And for the Devil...don't make me laugh.

something I wrote awile back

Modern culture, most notably the horror genre, has adversely impacted on our understanding
of paranormal phenomena. There is a disturbing tendency to label events as Satanic,
apparitions or other manifestations as emanating from demonic forces or Hell itself.
This has led to the discredit of those who engage in serious study of the phenomena,
as the origins of these cliché characters are rooted in quantifiable mythology not
tangible reality.

Since the dawn of time man has been frightened of the dark, by nature superstitious he
fears the unseen presence of evil spirits and created a host of rituals to protect
himself from them. Cultural evolution seeing the creation of infernal pantheons, devil's
who undermine a God's will and lead humanity into sin and towards eternal damnation. Most
ancient societies had evil entities in their religious dogmas some, such as:
Satan - Lucifer - Beelzebub - the Demon and Devil form an important part of the Jewish,
Christian and Islamic religions. Princes of Darkness, Arch Angels of Hell and their
minions who oppose the will of respective deities, however the origins of these infernal
beings are not so unholy. Judaism is the alpha religion from which the other two groups
emerged, it is in many ways an anthology of ancient mythologies, as the Hebrews came
into contact with their neighbors during their wanderings they absorbed many of their
mythic legends, heroes and villains, Lucifer was one such entity.

Lucifer is Latin for 'Light Bearer' and a Roman deity associated with the planet Venus,
which was known as Lucifer in Roman astrology before Venus, daughter of Jupiter, was
promoted from Goddess of vegetation to Goddess of love and beauty with the planet renamed
in her honor. He was called the 'Light Bearer' because Venus was the morning star, rose
in the sky heralding the dawn. Lucifer is the son of Astraeus and father of Ceyx,
Daedalion and the Hesperides. As a deity he came to personify the quest for light,
variants of his name used for several Goddesses of 'light' including Artemis, Aurora
and Hecate. He was by no means an evil force, history reveals Lucifer the antithesis
of darkness and evil. The Hebrews never associated him with Satan, nor did the early
Christians, the name had a positive connotation, was generally interpreted as meaning
'illumination' it was a popular name with the female equivalent Lucinda (Lucy) and
synonymous with a person who searched for knowledge.

Lucifer was adopted by the ancient Hebrews and retooled Shahar God of the dawn, Jerusalem
means 'House of Shalem' and has ties to the worship of Venus the 'Bringer of Light'. In
the Christian context it was cleric Origenes Adamantius [185-254CE] of the early Greek
Church who first claimed Lucifer was the Devil, a concept championed by Augustine of
Canterbury in 7th century England based on mistranslation. Lucifer was equated with
Satan by St. Jerome in his Vulgate which claimed he was the serpent in the Garden of
Eden who tempted Adam & Eve to transgress. He erroneously translated 'Heylel', which
means Venus in Hebrew, into Lucifer and an allusion to Satan when it wasn't. One of
the reasons he equated Lucifer with Satan was politics, his hatred of an orthodox movement
started in the 4th century by the Bishop of Cagliari, Lucifer Calaritanus, who founded a
group called the Luciferians. By equating Lucifer with Satan he ensured that his heretical
views on Christ's divinity and relationship with Jahova, etc, would be thought Satanic and
not resuscitated.

There is no scriptural source designating Lucifer as Satan, nonetheless the Church taught
he was an angel cast out of heaven because he wanted to take over the throne of Jahova.
However it would be religious popular fiction which would cement Lucifer as another face
of Satan, the 'Divine Comedy' by Alighieri Dante [1265-1321] and 'Paradise Lost' by John
Milton [1608-1675]. It was at this period Mephistopheles entered the lexicon of Hell's
overlord, the name a play on Lucifer, meaning 'not loving the light'. It has no scriptural
basis, it's a medieval literary creation in the Faust novella which became an accepted
part of Christian mythology in the same way Dante's view of Hell or Milton's view of
Satan came to define the church position.

The archetypal creature of darkness in Judeo-Christian and Islamic theology is of course
Satan, the origins of Satan are complex but predates the theologies which defined him as the
antithesis of their God of love and justice. Pre-Islamic Arabs were plagued by ferocious
sand storms and hot stinging whirlwinds which could last days even weeks, often claiming
lives. They considered these winds to be an evil spirit called 'al-Shairan' also 'Saitan'
who haunted the Sahara, various rituals were performed to protect a tribe from it. Early
Hebrews came into contact with Arabs during their wanderings and absorbed tales of this
evil spirit into their culture, over time it was incorporated into scripture and translated
'Sathane' meaning 'Slanderer' or 'Adversary'. Judaic spirituality is different to Christian
and Islamic, Satan doesn't feature as prominently. To ancient Hebrews Satan had a different
meaning, like in the days of the Prophet Mohammed the term 'Jihad' meant a faithful
persons struggle with inner demons, temptations and worldly distractions from spiritual
enlightenment, so too did Satan. Who was looked upon as a metaphor for the inner struggle,
his name denoted something one struggled with spiritually, figuratively not literally,
later generations redefined the legend under external cultural influences including
Zoroastrianism which provided concepts of good vs. evil duality. He came to represent
the forces of darkness, pure evil. Jewish scholars taught he was responsible for sins
recorded in the Torah, mans fall from grace in Eden and evil extant in the world. Like
Lucifer the persona of Satan changed in the Christian context during the medieval period
to give an increasingly reactionary Church more power, he was cast in the cloven hoof
image of a goat, the pagan God Pan. Jewish, Christian and Islamic doctrines differ on
what he is in the theological scheme of things, but North Africans still live in fear of
the 'al-Shairan' or devil wind.

Another pre Judeo-Christian evil entity is Beelzebub, commonly called 'Lord of the Flies'
he is regarded as the prince of evil spirits and Satan's chief lieutenant. However prior
to his being expropriated by the Hebrews he was the patron God of the Philistines in
ancient Palestine, a popular Arab deity linked to Ekron and Baal. Like other foreign
deities the Hebrews took to and worshipped their clergy branded Beelzebub a false god,
an evil entity which was embraced by Christian theologians as another name for the evil one.

A popular character in the religious realms of darkness is the Demon, the modern view of
them is the infernal minion of Satan, tormentors of the dammed in Hell and largely a creation
of the medieval Christian Church. As is often the case the origins of this mythic creature
is outside the Judeo-Christian theology, it comes from the Greek 'Daimon' which means,
depending on the context, "replete with knowledge" - "divine power" or "fate". The ancient
Greeks believed there were good ones 'Eudemons' and bad ones 'Cacodemons'. They were
intermediary spirits between men and its pantheon of Gods, Eudemons were considered
guardian spirits who gave guidance and protection in Greek mythology some were deified
heroes. Philosopher Socrates said he had a Daimon who warned of danger and bad judgment,
it was more accurate than omens or reading the entrails of birds. Cacodemons led people
astray, Helenized Jews introduced the concept and early Christian literature created the
popular horror movie image.

The word Devil is a popular blanket term for the Judeo-Christian Satan, however it has no
theological foundation, it's derived from the ancient Greek 'Diabolos' meaning "adversary
or prosecutor" with no particular religious connotation, introduced into Christology in the
medieval period which was a time of great theological inventiveness. The widely believed
home of these pseudo evil entities is Hell, the original concept of an abode of the dammed
has Persian origins, but was a place where disobedient wives were dispatched. In the
Judeo-Christian context Hell means different things to both groups, the ancient Hebrews
adopted the concept from the ancient Greeks 'Hades' which means 'the unseen place' and
'underworld' where the spirits of the dead repose without any moral judgment. The Hebrews
translated 'Hades' as 'Sheol', like the Greeks the Hebrews referred to Sheol as simply an
abode of the dead, a place of waiting for final judgment. The popular image of Hell as
being a place of horrendous eternal torment is a product of Christian mythology, the works
of authors such as Dante and Milton whose imagery has no scriptural basis but is widely
embraced nonetheless.

These communal myths are products of retooled external cultural influences, rooted in age
old fear. Western culture is permeated by ancient mythologies, modern horror movies and
novels have legitimized it and ingrained it deeply in popular consciousness. Those who
investigate paranormal phenomena or ponder claims which are made should do so with an
open mind and weight of scholarship behind them, guard against notions of mythologic
creatures and concepts modern clerics don't accept any more.

I hope that spaces right on here

The modern concept of "The Devil" is a very garbled one. It basically came about by the clergy in the dark ages taking Pan/Kernunnos, the Greek/Celtic god of fertility and the wild, and saying he was evil. Thankfully they had this "satan" concept that they could use, and so they merged the two. That's why pictures of the devil have horns and the lower body of a goat - because pan had them.

Then the clergy got another bright idea: why not keep the peasantry in line by creating a huge boogeyman that would get you if you didn't do exactly as they said, but could also be used to blame all your faults on, so that no one ever had to take any personal responsibility for their actions, and risk thinking for themselves? Well, that'd be just peachy. Hence, the modern concept of Satan.

Personally, I'm not Christian, and as such don't bother with Yaweh, or any of his henchmen.

The Old Testament
When copies of the Ancient manuscripts were first translated it was into the Latin Vulgate Bible. At this point in time the Hebrew word 'satan' (spelt the same way in English, Latin and Hebrew) was introduced to its new language. It had never before been used. The Hebrew word 'satan' simply means 'to oppose' or 'to be an adversary'. When the Latin Bible was translated to English, once again, the word was transliterated and introduced, this time, to the English language. In many cases transliterating the word would not have 'fitted into' the doctrine of the day and so in those cases the word was translated.

Before we look at the actual verses let's see the statistics.

The Hebrew 'satan' is used 33 times in the Old Testament.

7 times as 'adversary'
3 times as 'adversaries'
1 time as 'accuser'
3 times as 'accusers'
1 time as 'oppose'
1 time as 'stand against'
17 times as 'satan'

Of the 17 times the word is transliterated 'satan', 14 are in the Book of Job.

So that you may verify what I am saying for yourself the two numbers to look up in your Strongs concordance are #7853 and #7854.

Satan - A study on the Hebrew word ‘satan’ in the Old Testament
Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary'
Numbers 22:22
Then God's anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the way as an adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
(Here we see quite clearly that the angel of the Lord is the 'satan'.)

1 Samuel 29:4
But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, "Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become our adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary'). For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these men?
(This verse shows us a human being as the 'satan'.)

1 Kings 5:4
But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') nor evil occurence.
(There is no 'satan' who might attack Israel during this period of Solomon's reign).

1 Kings 11:14,23,25
Now the LORD raised up an adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was a descendant of the king in Edom. {23} And God raised up another adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') against him, Rezon the son of Eliadah, who had fled from his lord, Hadadezer king of Zobah. {25} He was an adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') of Israel all the days of Solomon (besides the trouble that Hadad caused); and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
(Here we have two 'satans' named! The first was Hadad, the Edomite and the second was Rezon, the son of Eliadah.)

Job 16:9
He tears me in His wrath, and hates me; He gnashes at me with His teeth; My adversary (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversary') sharpens His gaze on me.
(In each other case found in Job 'satan' is transliterated Satan, I can't see why it wasn't done here also!)

Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversaries'
2 Samuel 19:22
And David said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be adversaries (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversaries') to me today? Shall any man be put to death today in Israel? For do I not know that today I am king over Israel?" enemies rejoice.
Psalms 38:20
Those also who render evil for good, They are my adversaries, (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversaries') because I follow what is good.
Here we find king David explains what a 'satan' is - those who render evil for good.

Psalms 71:13
Let them be confounded and consumed Who are adversaries (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'adversaries') of my life; Let them be covered with reproach and dishonour Who seek my hurt.

Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'accuser'
Psalms 109:6
Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'accuser')
Psalms 109:4
In return for my love they are my accusers (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'accusers'), But I give myself to prayer.
Psalms 109:20
Let this be the Lord's reward to my accusers (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'accusers'), And to those who speak evil against my person.
Psalms 109:29
Let my accusers (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'accusers') be clothed with shame, And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle.

Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'stand against'
Numbers 22:32
And the Angel of the LORD said to him, "Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'stand against'), because your way is perverse before Me.
The Angel of the Lord has come to be a 'satan' here.

Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'oppose'
Zechariah 3:1
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'oppose') him.

Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan'
To 'transliterate' a word is to bring the word from its original language into the new language without translating it, thereby creating a new word in that language. The word 'satan', a descriptive word meaning adversary or accuser, was introduced to the English language by the translators of the Vulgate bible and has been kept there ever since.

1 Chronicles 21:1
Now Satan (Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan') stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
(A duplicate account of this census is found in 2 Samuel 24:1 where it says that God moved David to number the people. Is God 'satan'?)

Job 1:6-9,12
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan (Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan') also came among them. {7} And the LORD said to Satan (Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan'), "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it." {8} Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?" {9} So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? {12} And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
We are the sons of God. Let's imagine we held a prayer meeting and went before the Lord, one of us invited the next door neighbour in and he wasn't a Christian. If this non-Christian challenged God and God took up the challenge wouldn't this non-Christian be considered an adversary.

Job 2:1-4,6,7
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan (Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan') came also among them to present himself before the LORD. {2} And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it." {3} Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause." {4} So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. {6} And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life." {7} So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
Verse 7 is the only case were we can see that the transliterated word 'Satan' actually, physically did something. Boils are the result of the body emitting toxins from itself. If I was to put a poison in your food your body would attempt to eject it from itself through boils.

Zechariah 3:1
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the LORD, and Satan (Hebrew - 'satan', transliterated 'Satan') standing at his right hand to oppose (Hebrew - 'satan', translated 'oppose') him. {2} And the LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?"

First off I want to address Peppers response to some degree. Everyone sees Satan differently. You may see him as evil and another might see him as a true inspiration. Most of it comes from how society and the people within that society see him and pass their views down. I don't believe Satan evil not at all. He was the most beautiful of all angels and one who had his own ideas and wanted them to be heard. When he went against Gods wishes he was cast out. Seems even in Heaven speaking your mind was a bad thing to do..But as God had a right to his views and beliefs so did Satan. Doesn't make him evil. Just makes him a Deity with his own beliefs and feelings.

Secondly MASTERVAMPIRE flaming is absolutely 100% not allowed in the forums or anywhere on this site. Please refrain from refering to someone as a fool for making a thread on an interesting topic. Thank you. =)

Evil is everywhere just not everyone wants to open there eyes to it and this leads into the misinterptation of a being like satan and people like hitler

Wasn't Satan an ex-angel who was banished or something? From what i remember back in school scripture Satan was an angel who stood before god and was defeated by god and took off and made hell 2 balance good and evil and brought other angels with him. But in any case he was still pretty sweet.

He gives insight to others. To judge him solely as the dark lord may be correct. He stood up againist god for a reason and people neglect to find out this reason so they smack the label pure evil on him. After being cast down into hell he bacame sinister not entirely evil

i'm not sure if i really believe in satan. in christianity i think it says somewhere that the devil is the one that makes bad things happen. i'm sorry but i think that is such bull. most of the time bad things happen to people because they make a bad desicion and it all depends on the situation. i'm not sure though. i'm not a bible reader or a scholar to know really anything about this subject. but from what i have heard that is what i think.

I don't wish to step on any religious toes here so Yes...I believe that to be the correct etymology. Some key things to keep in mind when purusing your bible. The word "hell" is often used as the translation for "sheol" which was a place to hide things (like potatoes) not torture them. Gahenna was a place outside of Jeruselem where trash was burned to destruction...not burned for eternity. So the idea that "Hell" is some place of eternal fiery torment seems a bit like literary license.

well, satan isn't the supreme evil spirit, there're far worse that make him look like just another upstart wuss, his major thing was pride.. course many people also tend to forget that lucifer is the good guy, untill his fall and satan while the same being was him reborn into a new role.. I always found genisis (another fallen angel) more interesting though I've forgotten so much about that one I'll have to look him up again

I am a LeVay satanists and don't believe in satan or god as real, made the mistake in god there times, never again. What I do believe in is LaVeys take on the costumed, carnal, ritualistic needs of man.

I am satan, you are satan, were all satan, were all god, make your choice, its people who do good or bad things.

Satanism: The indulgence in human instincts.

We all make our own heaven or hell, we are our own gods, we make the decisions.

Have you ever seen god, have you ever seen the devil, have either one ever talked to you?

So, I guess if there is a god and i despise him then...............................................

I'm going straight to hell
to burn in flames with the devil
fuck the church and that christian shit
my tombstone's carved with a 666
I don't care about the lies that they preach
alive to live, not to beLIEve
in a god that I cannot see

after death
enter life
in the grave
to never wake
into the dark

true how does anyone know there is a god no one has ever seen him but people know there is most certainly the devil. Satan may not be as people think he is made out to be. God may be the one who tortures people for all eternity and stan be the one how rewards those who have worshiped him.

To answer BillytheJusts question, I would have to say Live my life to its fullest dont let anything get in my way, never give anything up and if I cant get something easily then take it forcibly. No one or nothing can stop you from getting what you want in this world. Make yourself the greatest heaven you could possibly imagine. Perhaps I will add more later.

In the satanic bible it states that christaanity developed satain and sataism. It also sates that either or can not exsistice without the other being that they were both developed by the same groupe catholics. In cathology back in the times of kings and queens ( i really don't know exact dates here ) It sates that a catholic priest developed the i dea when he needed to blame the eivl on something or a person thus using the fallen angel Gabriell as his story basis satian was developed so christanity may have well started to argued with their ansesters for the most part i beleive if there's a hevan there's a hell and too all things good there is an evil side so there

just to let everyone know.....Satan is not Lucifer. Satan is one of the high lords of Hell but he is not thee high lord.

neither is Balial, the devil or any of the other names people like to call Lucifer.

Lucifer has only one name, and that is Lucifer......which in angelic script means (the morning star).
