Okay, many of us have seen zombie comics and movies.

Now my question is, could there possibly be a breakout where people become so mad that they act like zombies or raving animals, like on 28 days later and 28 weeks later, the people were suffering from mad cow. In the past, people have been infected with mad cow and was not extreme as the example I put but it was bad from what I remember hearing.

Could an outbreak like this happen? Why or Why not?

You are speaking of a pandemic..And yes,it can and has happened.There are diseases that can make a person "go mad" as you put it to an extent .Parasites too.
There are more and more parasites that are becoming resistant to anthelmintics,I see it in horses more often these days.And if they were to get encysted into the brain tissue of a human,Im fairly certain it could cause some pretty horrific behaviour.and at that point,if you were to take something that could kill them,the endotoxins they might produce is terrible.
And take a hemorragic fever of some kind,like Ebola...I think Id go a little nuts trying to keep away from the poor bastards who have it ,who are overcome with fear and panick ,begging for help,coming at you with arms open ..bleeding and screaming.

It can and does happen, most of the outbreaks are covered up by the government but they do happen.

There is a book called the Zombie Survival Guide that outlines attacks that have happened throughout history. Whether or not these attacks are substantiated, is in the air. But who is to say they have not?

The military has plenty of chemicals to use as well drugs to produce that can call forth zombies within certain guidelines.

Voodun rituals can produce the same effect, but only on a minor basis.

An outbreak or pandemic can happen if the government knows what its doing and just wants to end some sort of over-population by any means nessessary.

A pandemic doesnt need a goverment to make it happen thats for sure.Hell,a goverment is hard pressed stopping them when they do happen.And its almost impossible to cover up a pandemic.Unlike an epidemic which is not as wide spread.
But nature does have her way of kulling over populations.As far as Zombies,I really dont look at it in that light,because Im just not into them or reading about them too much,but there really are some nasty diseases out there that would make someone seem like one.I've seen things like that for myself.
We have come very close to a nasty outbreak many times during the past 30 years or so.
One could also result in the release of animals that are used in testing etc... Activists who break in and release animals have brought us closer to epidemics or a pandemic than almost any other.
We have them now even HIV and the flu just to name a couple.

I think a fear of something as unrealistic as "Rage"(as in 28 Days Later) is a little unrealistic.However,I have spent the last decade or so obsessing over some type of outbreak,be it viral mutation,medicinal disaster,or biological warfare.I know people who actually believe that HIV was originally purposefully induced as a form of population control gone awry.I think that's a bit paranoid,but what if?...

There was a paper I read,I guess it was in the 90s where a woman discovered a Dinoflagellant that she named Pfiesteria piscicida in the rivers of North Carolina and the eastern seaboard up to Virginia
I think.This cell is bascically an alge that becomes prolific in Nitrogen and phospherous rich water.It caused major fish kills and affected anyone who was on or near the river and was airborne.It caused nasty lesions in the brain,muscle tissue and on the skin.It altered their minds in a very bad way as well,and killed some.This all caused by the run off from the pig farms and fertilizers getting into the water shed.All in all it was a bad deal.So yeah,there is all kinds of things that could cause a Zombie like scenario to happen.

But seriously,although this is good fodder for comic books and movies,its real and its scary.We just lost a horse two weeks ago(its in my journal) due to an outbreak.I got a call in the middle of the night and had to leave Tenn. to come here and deal with it.Five horses were affected and we lost one in the end.I had to quarrantine them,gear up in Tyveck and Mach 4 chem .Face shield...the whole nine.As I said,four are recovering but the one who died? It was a horrible thing to watch.And watch I did.I had to stay with her,I wouldnt have left her anyway not alone to die like that... while she circled,whinnied and pawed ,laying down and getting up again although she was so weak, her head swelling up as eyes bulged.I had given her so many pain shots and knowing I couldnt give anymore because she would have to go to Clemson for an autopsy.Thank goodness she couldnt talk because she was begging me with those blue eyes of hers.BEGGING me to help her.so I think that was actually worse.And I couldnt.I could tell her mind wasnt hers anymore and at that point ,it got too dangerous to go into her stall.2 am it was over.Thankfully.
It was one of the worse deaths I have ever witnessed a horse go through.
So no,it isnt funny.
Anyway,they still dont know what it was and we have the best in the country working on it.There can be animal Zombies too I guess.

Pandemics could spread fast in todays society, not only the USA but other countries are still doing experiments with bio technoligy. lets build the better weapon, build the better solidier. Heck possibiliities of virus spread is real, yet zombies I think that may be far fetched to a degree.

Well, if, an outbreak happen, I assure you, that the government will take over any situations, including, force. The segregation (quarantine) of human will happen so fast, that the main factor will be control. Every time that we get any "weird" case at the Hospital, that case must be declare to the CFDC. What troubles me these days about it is that Im seeing more and more diseases and such crossing Vectors/species.That in itself is alarming.Not only that,but they are mutating into bugs we just cant kill with current meds.Sadly,much,if not most of it is our own fault...ie: not finishing antibiotic rounds,not vaccinating and things like that that perpetuate mutations and such.We dig deeper into the ground and establish ourselves on lands where we have not been established before bringing bacti to the surface which have been buried for millinia..And as was stated above,everyone has been brought closer together by super transists.

I think it can, scientists in little bunkers in the world out there are constantly creating new germ warfare crap to kill as many people as possible. So YES I think they have tinkered with things so much that it could very easily happen.

In my Sci-fi Alternate reality, I imagine the source of an outbreak as being not a virus, but a serious side effect if an hasty applied Anti-cancer " vaccination..

Here is a simple concept. The rabies virus is transmitted through blood contact right now. This virus like any other is slowly evolving with each new host and adapting to new environments. Let’s say this virus becomes contact contractible. Ok now it is going to spread faster, the people infected will slowly go insane, they will attack people around them, they touch a door knob and now 500 people at the same mall just picked up the virus. They take it home and pass it to their families who pass it to their friends. Within months the virus is everywhere, and people are treated for it. The virus responds to the treatment by evolving once again…..only in time it become capable of airborne transfer. Still not a problem we can vaccinate for it, oh wait it’s evolved again, and now the strain is resistant to all known treatments. It’s unlikely that this would ever really happen and it takes years for virus’s to evolve….usually. But think about it, an airborne rabies based virus. Be just like the good old zombie movies, only they wouldn’t eat us, just maul everything to death, and in time die themselves due to the virus slowly destroying their nervous system.

Yes, I think so. There will someday be a widespread panic for some reason or another. People are too scared and stupid for it not to happen with the way things are going right now.

Lord wolf I know there is laws govering Bio weopons for the world yet the spectrum of knowledge in all is that there is still experiments with such chemicals still going on. So depending what you may call Bio chemicals could span along range of viruses or outbreaks that could be happening today

Yeah I think the government has a lot to do with the AIDS outbreak. I also know that they give a certain pill cocktail to phlebotomists for needlesticks and rape victims to prevent AIDS. If they are able to prevent it with pills, why not a vaccine. It makes me ask a lot of questions! And don't even try to say they don't, because my sister is a phlebotomist and I have been raped and part of the rape kit was those AIDS prevention pills. They made me sick as shit!

Hey Sexy,as far as the PEP kits..Those are basically antivirals and for two and three combos antibiotics for people in WHO and such. The combinations depend on the type of exposure one has had or could get.sadly,its just a hopeful precaution and hasnt been proven to prevent HIV and the side affects are undesireable.Indications are that they are administered within two to 72 hours.You probably took yours for around 4 weeks .We only wish it were just as easy as taking a pill.
Anyway,ya,there is alot of suspision as far as it being an engineered virus.Another thing I would like to bring up on this is that during the cold war,there was alot of work being done in Russia on bio weapons..ok

I saw that someone mentioned the "Zombie Survival Guide," but there is also a book called "World War Z" that outlines, like a reporters notes, the supposed future zombie outbreak. It is an even better choice of book than the latter, IMHO.

Also, I have been thinking about the makings of a "Zombie proof suit" for many years now. Pretty much, it is a length of chainlink fencing that you wrap around your body. Think of the majority of modern zombie films you have seen. It is almost certain that a plain, innocous fence--usually chainlink--that stumps and keeps the zombies at bay.

I'm sure we will see pandemics that could cause peole to loose their minds.

I always thought that zombie stuff was kinda corny. I always have a good laugh when I watch those Zombie movies. Especially Evil Dead 2 and Shaun of the Dead haha!

But yeah... a pandemic/wide spread panic/however you want to refer to it is definitely possible. May not be probable, but it is possible.

Some reasons that might cause wise spread panic are finding out that we are being invaded by aliens, about to be hit by a giant meteor that could end the world, the end of the world itself among several other things.

i recall years ago people going off on "the govt created aids" theory. it struck me as silly then and even more so now.
why would the govt engineer something that takes years to really do damage, and is such a fragile virus? add to that the inability to cure it...
good weapons need a way to not kill the ones using them.

back to the subject tho....if your afraid of zombies, see shawn of the dead...it should cure you. zombies in certain circumstances can be your friend!

Yes I believe it can happen.There are many reason why.For a terrorist threat ,government mishap or a rebellious group.Its only a matter of time as to when,and whatever is used in the outbreak.

Zombies are reanimated corpses who dine on flesh. While there could be a pandemic that made people crazy before they died, crazy enuf to bite, it would also make them very ill and unlikely to travel in hordes.

A pandemic that affected our food supply, caused huge crop failures and/or destroyed cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs and cats and any critter we can eat would bring out the gastronomic zombie/cannibal in many humans.

I just found it curious when you said "humans are always finding new ways to destroy themselves" - and while there is some truth to that the opposite is far more prevalent. Every age of technological advancement has given us new ways to destroy ourselves, but also more efficient ways of living, prolonged life, increased standard of living etc. If you start stripping those ages of advancement away you would find yourself back in the days of slavery, then the dark ages, hunting and gathering with tribal warfare and so on. And while there is still hunger, famine, disease, and wars today - they pale in comparison to our past. We have advanced - despite all the new issues we have created.

Yes I do believe an outbreak can happen. There is never a 100% garantee that accidents will not happen. As long as we keep making virus there will always be that chance.

thats only because we are to concerned with stamping out all germs, there is a reason why every couple years a new more terrifying flu comes a long. germs are constantly evolving and we keep making our natural immune systems weaker.

This is exactly why I do not go to a doctor when I get sick! We fill our bodies with god knows what, oftentimes triggering horrid side-effects which usually out weight what you were trying to fix in the first place, and inhibiting our bodies natural ability to heal itself. In the long run, we make these medicines less likely to work because our bodies build up an immunity to them. So why not just ride it out and let your body do what it was made to do.

Take for instance, swine flu. Bam, we're in a recession. Crap, there's a new horrible sickness killing people..namely the old and the young. Did the millions that went un-medicated die? NO. Some did. But not all. The hype was made to get people rushing into hospitals and doctor's offices world-wide. $CHA-CHING$.
