I often wondered why women are attracted to serial killers, or those men on death row.

Scott Peterson, the man who was convicted of murdering his wife and unborn child, had been on Death Row barely an hour when the first proposal arrived from a woman who wants to be the new Mrs. Scott Peterson.

Three dozen phone calls came in to the warden's office on Peterson's first day at his new home in San Quentin State Prison -- women were pleading for his mailing address, and one smitten 18-year-old said she wanted to marry him.
Prison weddings in California are a regular occurrence. In general, about 20 inmates get married in ceremonies held on the first Friday of even-numbered months at San Quentin, and usually at least one condemned inmate is among them.

Why do you think women are attracted to these men?
What purpose in their life would these women have
to be married to a death row inmate?

Im thinking that these women have a need to feel special and unique in that they are the ONE that a killer wouldnt kill.And some I feel are into the notoriety of the whole 'Im married to a killer" thing.

It could be attention too. Same reason a woman might marry a known mob person back in the roaring twenties. Of course it could also be masochism. People, men and women alike can do some pretty strange things. Another theory is the unknown theory. People tend to be fascinated by things they do not know or understand, so they want to get as close to it as they can to better understand it. That's just a few thoughts.

Perhaps it is related to why people collect dangerous items.

In a manner it is brushing with ' chaos' a tiger in a cage, and the desire to hear it purr..

Knowing the true nature of their target of affection.

To be able to astonish, and shock the girls at Mid week luncheons ( the ones who gossip).


The tendancy to believe that they can assist in turning a
callous monster, maybe even idealizing that the seriel killer will ' open up to them' and tell all.

Then there is the 15 min of fame potential.

Its the fame, the idea of being the Bride of the Monster...That, I believe, and there is something inherently damaged in their psyche.

Well... if she was the one he didn't want to kill, she'd be damn certain he'd take care of anyone who tried to do her wrong.
it's scientifically proven, though, that women prefer the bad boys, as well as people that express no interest in them, or should not be interested.
i did some research on that myself, and found that at most dating sites, it's the people who aren't looking at the camera for their picture that get the most results. at least 50% more results than the others, actually.
Today's culture says that people who don't care about others, or are only interested in their own trifles are by far the most badass and interesting, they're the 'bad boys'.

Many of them- it's as simple as they believe the men to be innocent. They were swindleable.

There is the unpredictable factor to, the same factor that compells people to put their hand into a Panda, or polar bear Cage. As mentioned there is also the guilibility factor, of those who write Scotty Boy, how many would you spectulate believe he was framed, or actually innocent?

Each one ( predictably) is probly led by Scotty to believe they are the only one he is affectionate for.

Actually, I agree with Cabrion on this one; such men are the epitome of the "bad boy" so many women, usually those more insecure, seem to fawn over.

I also found most interesting his claim that statistics indicate women are more attracted to photos of men who don't look at the camera... such as Cabrion's own photo, perhaps? (Just messin' with ya, Cabrion... no dis intended at all.) ;)

I remember reading an article about how hundreds of women were writing and proposing to Richard Ramerez, the Night Stalker, who admittedly killed dozens and grinned the whole while. Just goes to show you that most of the really sick people aren't neccessarily locked up. Sie sind überall ausführen lose!

They do it for the fame and the thrill. Plus they know they can't hurt them if they are spending life in prison. I went to prison, it's a very lonely place.

i think it is a coupleof reasons why woman do this

1. 99 % of woman do not want to mate with the nice sweet guy. we will have them as friends, have them as a back up date

but most of us wont marry them, we like guys who at times are asses, brats, forget full, and crud. its a challange for us

2. most woman think they can fix some one, which we all no we cant fix or change some one who dont want it

3. some woman are just plain weird and thats all to say

That the strong feelings towards the men that they had been misjudged could have been misplaced. Feelings are hard to give names to anyway.

There are as many reasons why women go for death row inmates as there are women and inmates. *Chuckles*

A lot of them have already been touched on. Such as the women just wanting the fame of it. To wanting to know the unknown. And ofcourse the one at the top of My list......

"I can save him" women. These are the women who are attracted to the bad boys because they know "Deep Down he really is a good guy." "He can be samed and I'm the girl to do it." *laughs*

Ofcourse there are some that are just plain attracted to the deranged because they are deranged themselves. Sadist attract not just masochists, but other sadists too.

But as the old saying goes.....

Not only are they saying the "bad boy syndrome" but that it is a safe relationship because they don't spend more than 1 or 2 hours together, supervised and in some countries conjugal visits are not allowed, therefore the woman can control that aspect of the relationship even though it envolves the rules of the facility. They also say the notoriety makes them feel special. The attention as some have already mentioned. Some places like Australia frown on marriage with those in jail/prison. I wonder if men do this too with women in prison? I highly doubt it for some reason. I think for some it is the forbidden that is found exiting and takes them out of a rather humdrum life in some circumstances, especially if they know it can only go so far.

Historically, when given a choice, women have aligned themselves with men who can support and protect a family. That's why marriage was invented.

personaly I dont see the attraction but I have to agree it is the 'I can change him' attitude of big headed women and also these men are good at manipulating women that write to them out of morbid curiosity ........some women feel safe being manipulated and controlled if they have been in abusive situations either in the childhood or adult life it feels 'safe' and 'normal' rather than face change and find a 'good' man

i think you are half right. there is no scintific proff that woman like bad boys.

but we see the proff, tv , daily life, court.

just because a woman gets married to a guy does not mean he is a nice guy.

marrige back 80 years ago then to the beging of time woman did not marry out of choice. she was told you marry him. then they were basicly treated like cattle. they woke they worked the house and property and bared kids.

maybe in some ways they also marry these men is they are making the choice, maybe they have people who always tell them what to do so this is there freedom thing

Well, at least you'd have the guy's attention while he's locked up. It would be like a pen pal with benefits, but not the actual touchey ones.

Maybe what we see around us is not so much women choosing bad guys as that there are more bad guys than good guys?

I'm in a different demographic and while I wouldn't want any of my friend's marriages, there's no devastating abuse apparent, they appear stable, and their children are prospering.

I dated bad boys at one time mainly because I didn't know any better. There were no familial or community standards available to guide me. Fortunately, I am not a masochistic.

Many women are taught to be masochists. Many cultures define femininity in purely masochistic terms. I'd go so far as to say that a list of Ideal Feminine qualities would largely consist of attributes that make women susceptible to exploitation by bad boys.

It could also be the fact that these men are locked up and in control by the penal system.
The women who are attracted to them may feel some power in knowing that these men can't do much, to them or anyone else. In a way, the women have the upper hand. And of course, these crazy chicks want to feel 'special'.

I think we need to discount what's on TV, since it trends toward the sensational. Making hay with volcano news the announcer says, his voice full of anxious concern, "The Volcano and You!"

People are used to a twist, a turning point, and conflict in the stories they read and view.

Some people lead twistless lives with nary a turning point.

But if T.V. is your only source of training as to what constitutes LIFE, then so be it. You're condemned to overwrought, violent twists in your life.

For anybody still unsure, relationships not across-the-board like this.

I think conflict and drama are addicting. Gets the adrenalin flowing. Makes some people feel like they have a life . . . just like one on T.V.

I don't see post as " right, or wrong" it is degrees, and combinations of likely factors. It is theory, is it not?

i have to admit i have had a few crak pot emails from what i said with the tv

but , the tv i am talking about is doctumantrys, not relaity tv , that stuff is so blown out of propration. but i have watched live court, snaped , history , so on so forth


but i have also seen it in places where i volinter or have volintered , shelters, job corps, hospitals , church.

Bloodtrope, it was an experiment i did myself, otherwise i wouldn't have believed it rather than keep bringing it up for shits and giggles. if you want the names of them all and such, well, i couldn't rightfully give that to you even if i wrote it down. i encourage you to do it yourself if you'd like, but i'm sure someone already did a full article on it somewhere.
Just check out places like e-harmony, matches.com, or fling. However i'll tell you now it's more the sites aimed at *ahem* human interaction that you see this play out. Not to say you won't notice significant differences on the others, of course.
Also older women seem to be more immune to the 'bad boy' thing, as they seem to be looking more for someone to settle with as opposed to someone who can give them that 'one last wild ride'.

I think the reason women are attracted to these type of men is because deep down they want to be the one who turns them from their dark ways to be gentle an human.

I think there is deep down in many women the need to save, rescue and nurture those that they deem to be wounded and in need of healing.

I think there is also a sexual attraction to being with someone evil, or who is a bastard to them. I think the majority of women are brought up to believe they are inferior and unworthy so they seek out men who will treat them the way they expect to be treated.

I think Oceane hit it right on the head, I didn't have to read further, and this was the same point I was going to make.

It is, I feel, all about taming something wild and upredictable. About being held in such regard to someone that judges on a daily basis, that they couldn't possibly take you out of this world.

I do have a friend, who is quite weird. Which what little knowledge I have in psychology, I could say he has some precursory traits that could lead to something much worse. He has tried many times to bring me into some of the messed up things he likes. (I am keeping this a secret as to not be sick or vulgar) It really does feel like I have gotten to a point where I am respected and seen as off limits for his deviance. I am sure this feeling is what drives the women in question, in this post.

Mystic...crazy could be one word to describe those women.
But on a serious note...
Personality...a woman who wants to marry a man on death row has issues. She may fear a real relationship. Perhaps due to abuse or what have you. She may have a need to "fix" people or save them. Some are just weird and get off on the inmate thing or the murders itself. And if she gets off on the murders then she really needs help herself. There are so many reasons why...regardless maybe they should see a shrink. If they fixed their inner issues then maybe they could have a real relationship with someone not on death row or in jail.

I definitely believe that women are attracted to such men, because they in some sense have control over the relationship and what goes on. Many women who have always been forced into the submissive role by abusive or dead-beat men feel the need to regain their control of their lives and self by overpowering and dominating not just any man but a man that is perceived as an overly strong, feared, murderous, killer, etc.

Taintedlips....If one wants to gain control in relationships, how are they to do that when their mate of choice is behind bars for life? I think if a woman has a relationship with a death row inmate...she does not have any control, she is hiding. She is hiding from a real relationship, hiding from life. What control could she have? Other than the say of who she is with? She is still alone. Her life doesn't change. She still does the same things she did before hooking up with Mr death row. Sure they may allow visits for some...but that is not control. I fail to see how the woman has the control here. She can make herself believe she is in control but she isn't. Many death row inmates have perfected manipulation, the woman would believe anything he says. As i stated before, a woman who chooses to marry or date a death row inmate has inner issues. Deep rooted self esteem issues, whether it be from abuse or trauma...the woman needs help; especially if she thinks she is in total control of the relationship with Mr death row. Come on...she doesnt even have say on his life or what he does.

There is no definite answer for this question; could be what everyone said here like it could be nothing to do with it, the answer lies on each person deciding to engage on a particular relationship of such nature, it is quite strange discussion to speculate on something outside our personal comprehension. This is a mere speculation, those who want to know, should have to ask the person interested on it to have one version of the psychology behind it.

what happens if a good guy has a bad side but he never shows it to anybody do you think you can help him out from his darkside or not?

Some due it to get attention, others do it for power and celebrity..I mean telling a friend or family you're dating a convict is a high for you.. I dont recommend it though..

It is a futile effort to try to logically explain a rational reason for feeling emotion for one bag of bones over another. Emotion is sort of what I would define as the opposite of rational.

I will admit that I agree with most of the above statements. I think furthermore that alot of these women are just attracted to what they beleive to be the "badboy complex" and some how feel that being with someone who has commited such crimes is a good catch. I have known a few friends that have this complex and write to men in prison. I guess each person has their own way of thinking about who is worth and who is not.

I'm sure they do, however there are less female serial killers, or maybe they are better at not getting caught.

I have noticed myself, that we seem to live in an age where a man could walk up to a woman, knock her straight to the floor, down a 5th of Jack and say "I do this a lot and I like to cheat, too," and that woman will look up at him thinking "Oh, baby!" Women like that are, put simply, idiots! On the other hand, there are women who go for the "bad boys" because they like the self-confidence. They just look for that in the wrong places. Not their fault. There are very few of us out there who are confident and yet worthwhile. As far as being attracted to murderers and the like, I'm guessing that some kind of rebellion is involved. Or maybe they just have a subconcious death wish...

i think it's because women don't want that sweet/ tender/ gentle guy. Women have those qualities [for the most part] themselves and are looking for the dominate and at time brutal side of the personality spectrum... some women, yet, go a bit too far and look for the crazy guys.... but in their defense.... sweet/ tender/ gentle guys can at time become boring. Everyone needs a little excitement in their life.

They just need to find a guy in that happy medium.

I am Not attracted to them but i did catch the school bus at the end of the Green Killers Driveway thru highschhool and junior high..

he wroked at Kennworth trucking on pacific hwy so or hwy 99 it was the strip hed puck up hookers at and then hed murder them.

Many of the bodies were found within a 3 mile radius of my home as i lived off of hwy 99 in the seatac area of washington state where gary ridegway the green river killer was born and raised.
