If you were to create a brand new story- novel or screenplay, and had to be really unique... where would your setting be? People get tired of New Orleans (but not me! :P) I thought '30 days of night' was a neat place to take them. It was cool to see them use a place where they have no sun for such a long period of time. Imagine... a fictional vampire's dream! If only more people lived in Alaska! ha!
There has to be somewhere else in the world where we could use their nature to the vampire's advantage, right? New Orleans is used so often because it's retained so much old world folklore. People openly practice things here that isn't so accepted elsewhere. Because people seem to want to see it here (those people being tourists, moreso).
I'm just curious if there's some place brand new- one never tapped into by writers that really would work and feel 'right'.
Ideas?
I quite like the idea of the middle east...although the church is a great as well! Rome being my main thought!
Rather like a serial killer working for the police, me thinks...
I think one of the large cities of China would make an interesting setting. The aristocratic portion of the tale would take a few twists with the difference in Chinese culture, but tradition and family are still very rich, and old there. There is a massive population, and laws are much easier to circumvent than somewhere in the states. Other large cities in countries where people wouldn't be missed as easily would also work. Mexico City would be interesting - throw in an ancient bloodline from one of the lost peoples of the area.
Make him/her nomadic........always moving........maybe visiting different covens from time to time.......Gotta be riding a Harley or driving a muscle........Oooooh Yaaaah....
First off @ Sexy: what made you think of combining Vampires with Avonlea?
@Kytryn: yes I agree that gloomy rainy places Like england, Scotland and the pacific northwest specifically the Seattle are (where I am at) make for good locations for vampire stories.
I like the idea of throwing vampires into Asia like Japan or Hong Kong or places like that.
traveling through different coven is the best way to learn about different covens
im a scottish girl i live just next to edinburgh and that is an amzing place for vampire story wat with the underground streets long buried and forgotton now opened up after a fire led to there discovery!! Could do story of them living under our very noses as the hidden streets who knows how many there really is! and it would be perfect! coukd have a whole civilization down there !
also a place in scotland called linlthgow with a palace which is more like an old mini castle !
talking of which with scotttish setting think of the amount of castles you could use !!! you can be in secluded countrside and 5 miles later be in a main city/town !
vampires in alaska would be interesting especially since part of the year it's light and part of it it's darker i believe.
I would like to see a movie where they're in Russia...
the climate it very much like Alaska where we receive little sun in some months... Plus Russia is on of the locations of some of the oldest vampire myths, it would be cool to bring in some of that old school history/myths back into play with modern vampire flicks.
Most of the response to this tread talked about "romantic" vampire.
I will choose The Subway system in New York City. Vampires can go up at night and satisfy their natural instinct. And the city have to send an Army of Good Soldiers to track dawn the Vampires. Nobody return, that is when the ask for the help of Blade.
My native county, Malta, we have lots of history here and it's a culture completely different from the ones we're used to see on books and tv.
i think dallas or san antone texas would be interesting. dallas is a pretty new city, but it has its secrets...
san antonio is a very old town by texas standards, and it has many things that are hidden.
a nice change from the usual.

well i know my fianvee would love see more vampires in arkansas , personally i would love to see vampire in early london, the romanticism is just very .. mystifying....
Quite frankly I don't think it matters where the setting is really. Some are dwelling on the old Eastern European gentleman type but prior there was Carmilla which Stoker drew from. It states it in his notes. A female vampire. Since writing a story is purely fiction you can make your vampire anyway you like. I don't think many appreciate this aspect of fiction. It is your story and vampires don't have to be blood thirsty revenants...that is superstitition anyway. I put my vampires in areas I know something about so I don't have to be researching contstantly and drew personalities from people I know or have known. Write from what you know or are interested in. You could even create a story where the person who thinks they are a vampire is actually insane. I mean you can write anything and put them anywhere. Could have them in a mental hospital where they keep them in a darkened room because they believe the person's delusion drives them into violent behavior, but they aren't delusional. They could sparkle in the sunlight, hahahaha...(couldn't resist)
good point. i agree alot of people do tend to forget that. i'm helping my fiancee' write a vamp story so i'll keep that in mind.
I think vampire movies/ books are becoming overplayed and annoyingly mainstream. So I think to HONESTLY refresh something... there needs to be a break... you know like how bands disappear for a few years then come back with a bad ass album...like that...
once people see enough of something... they tend to become annoyed and look for something different for a while.
So a refreshing vamp setting would be to disappear for a few years then come back when EVERYONE isn't doing it anymore.
vampires living in or under the ocean would be a interesting setting
i would like to see them in ancient egypt as the rulers and gods personified shaping a nation or as priests in the amazon jungle
sounds a bit like queen of the damned..
im reading one now that takes place in tulsa ok...
i mean...TULSA???
lol
its pretty good so far, even tho its aimed more at the teen set.
~W~
qod just began in egypt im talking on a much larger scale vampires as the ancient gods Isis Hathor Ra.... and to become ruler would mean becoming vampire qod leaves egypt early in the story and is abiguous as to the actual beginning being just an evil force i would wish it to delve deeply into ancient egypts myths and century old stories
going through some of egypts most famous rulers ...
My vampires are similar to the ones Upir mentioned: rich, classy, educated, etc...
I'd like to also see vampires in a modern Southern and/or Western setting.
If it were for me I'd throw in northern Scandinavia or Spitsbergen for instance... bearing consideration that such vampire could leap vast distances in a short matter of time.....I think that's enough elaboration from my part.
a vampire story set at the golden age of the roman empire would be a nice change
or maybe throw Vampires into "Arabian Nights" style universe
well seeing as I am writing a story about vampires... my setting is actually in Scotland. It seems to me to be a less used location
Scotland is an excellent setting, what with all the ruined castles and stuff, Scotland and Ireland are great, England is dull unless you where to set in say 700-900s when magic was still around there.
The NORTH POLE is not something new for placing supernatural. In the new movie they just revived the idea of Mary Shelley with her notorious Frankenstein.Evidently is harder to accept for the modern public, even after Anne Rice placed Akasha`s origins there, that Egipt will be a fit place for vampires: too much sun! They even had a central cult of it.
;))
So if we are talking of revamping some old places why not Transilvania or Vallachia? The people there still believe in supernatural and strigoi there.
And this area is still am exotic land for the English speaking world.
:)
If you care about the elegant and masked vampire maybe we can think to the Alps in the XVIIIth century.A delicate pale French or Italian beauty would be a nice revamping of the beauty and the beast theme.
The masquerades would offer the perfect frame for it.Just like Hawthorne`s masquerades from the new world.
actually the idea of throwing vampires into Beauty and the beast sounds really good.
all this talk is really making me want to write a book, i just have no idea where to start
Mine would be based around something i've felt or experienced personally myself , and wrap it around that and add something completely different from what is in the mainstream atm.
There are tons of romantic versions, horror versions, etc etc, dracula yadda yadda, it gets old.
A new perspective on a NEW character would be great. I can practically see mine already ;)
I have half an idea, it would involve a boy who was unaware his parents were vampires, thats as far as ive gotten so far
im liking the idea of a remote island in contempory scotland where christian beliefs dictate how folk live. Doru had a great idea wtih the vampire infiltrating the church and being on a remote island, there isnt much escape...
Quebec would be great, we have old places with castle, and caves and we also have big forest and we also have multi languages, and we speak french (gigles) Oui oui mon chéri !
plus we got cold winters that can make you woder if it would be hoter in the freezer and we got also hot summers that can make you wish you live in an oven
plus I live there I mean here hehe
As for style, story or genre, well lets say they would not sparkle or burst in flammes, simply they would sort of be able to live during day time as normal humans, but once the sun is down they would be pure animals and totaly destructive towards any humans who dare stay outside after dark.
I will throw Australia in the ring simply because i live there and its a fantastic place with a diverse environment.
I would use my own little secluded area were i live now, in the woods of CT, no neighbors for miles.
...or something totally different...vampires in space? haha imagine being in a spaceship and finding out one of the crew was a vampire who kills your shipmates, your only option is to land the craft on another world...and the alien lifeforms on that planet are not in any way similar to human beings... you are more compatible with the human form of the vampire...what do you do? do you let the vampire give you the eternal kiss, or do you live alone for the rest of your days with creatures you find repulsive...?
I always wanted to write about Vampires in an Asian country, like China, Japan, North/South Korea, or Thailand.
Imagine a country where they are so overpopulated that a Vampire could have full range of any victim they wanted and the police and the people of the community would just think it to be a criminal crime, not a vampire.
I think it would be something to write about, imagine all the possibilities a writer can have doing that? Endless opportunities for someone to create a gruesome, nonstop reader that's for sure.
Makes me want to write. =}
In a secluded ranch community in southeastern Colorado, population of 120, and long, hot, uneventful days. A vampire could really stir things up :P
i currently read the blood books and the idea that vamps evolved from fallen angel was really interesting. for some reason it made them more relatable.
and as far as the vamp book located in tulsa OK... the house of night and i love them~!~!~!~!~! the idea that vamps are normal people who under a pyshiological change is very interesting.
i would love to see vamps in busy major city whose supersitions run high... bejing tokyo hong kong.... or queensland .... somewhere that isn't completely played out. I love the gothic scene but it's soo played out. I am a huge poe fan so i would even like to see something like the tell tale heart retold from a vamp perspective... a vamp with a conscience. who feels regret for killing it's prey the way the main character did in the tell tale heart.
I would pick my home County of Cornwall in the United Kingdom.
It is steeped in heritage and has some cracking dark natural weather to set the scene
South Carolina during the summer............It is so hot that i would have the vampires use the heat as a strength and to build there anger........They are strong enough to withstand cold but came to the south to feast eternally
How about a desert, isolated and alone away from the population.
but what's the point of them being isolated??? they need the masses to maintain their status as living be it undead or not... it may only be fiction but anne rice proved that with louis when he went into exile he basically doomed himself to starvation....
Hmm, where have they not done one? Egypt? Jamaica? Iraq? Hahaha........:P Send 'em over to Afghanistan.
indeed..... although... all that sand would do horrible damage to their fangs... the cayman islands
