In the movie "queen of the damned", the vampire Lestat "comes out of the coffin" and announces to the world that he is in fact a vampire, and no one believes him for a minute. (well..very few).
So, if a vampire of the Hollywood tradition happened to exist AND were to publicly admit to what he/she was, what would be the reaction?
total disbelief? animosity? would people beat a path to his door to befriend him? would all the little van Helsing wannabes come out of the woodwork and try to stake our hero?
what are your thoughts?
~Wolf~
it also happened in the book as well.
I am sure that the tabloids would have a field day the moment a celebrity "came out of the Coffin"
although man is fascinated by the mythology of the vampire the dark and sexual power they hold. yet humans are well known to infact think as the primitive primates we once came from. so in saying I think we as man would come to kill him if the myths are correct in the sense of how to kill a vampire
I think all the Twilight fangirls would try to simultaneously rape him.
But I also think most of the world would merely brush them off as a basketcase, and the 'loids would have a great time of it, especially the National Enquirer and Sun and the like.
The teenie boppers who are all obsessed with the Twilight Saga would go nuts over a "vampire" who "came out" to the world. I think that they would attempt to make him their own personal Edward, or whoever they happen to adore from the series.
As for the "rest" of the world, I think most of them would say that the "vampire" was just a whack job looking for his/her fifteen minutes of fame. Some would secretly believe, but for the most part mob mentality would proclaim the "out" vamp as a fraud and a crazy.
Meanwhile, the papers that typically run stories on Big Foot and Nessie and the lizard man and such would run wild with the story of a rogue vamp.
At least, that's my opinion.
I do agree with you about the twilight nuts going mad at the idea of a real vampire celebrity, I suppose there is nothing wrong with them, its just I would rather Serious vampire girls.
What do you suppose makes the difference between Fangirl and Serious Fan? Do you think it's age, or maturity, or maybe just a level of jadedness?
maturity, age has nothing to do with it.
and I am not sure i know what you mean by jadedness.
Someone who's jaded has the attitude that nothing fazes them any more, because they've seen everything, been there, done that, worn that t-shirt.
I don't think that really plays into it except that a person like that may be more open to accept someone who says to them " I am a vampire"
I think all those who identify as vampires now would feel inadaquite, and denounce the claimant as a wanna-be.
Because as they say, if the genuine article came about..
The Gig would be up.
Personally, if a real Hollywood type vampire came "out" I would like to see him locked up and used as a lab rat and have study after study done so we can better understand how he came to have this disease.
Then once we understand better, toss him out into the sunlight and watch him burn to ashes.
See, I don't find vampires all that "sexy" or attractive. And getting bitten on the neck? Yea sure, you go out into the woods and have an animal maul your neck and tell me how all hot and turned on that makes you.
S/he's be surrounded by the media but at the same time many would dibelief thinking it's just a way to make publicity.
We'd have articles on possibly every site existing and parodies etc...
Others would just ignore.
I think there would be a lot of pressure from the public for them to "use their vampire powers" or something to prove themelf...once they were proven a vampire disbelief would turn to fear. And dabbler hit the nail on the head about a lot of fake vampires admitting their fraud.
the second he/she went into the sun and nothing happened no one would take them seriously, people have closed minds.
if there was a vampire celebrity, who do you think it would be?
now stretch your imagination...
so one comes out...then perhaps more...
does the govt start to round them up?
would they become celebraties?
could even they run for public office? (the powers that be in washington are just about the closest thing to vampires going these days. living vamps aside, politicians want to suck every drop! LOL).
seriously how far could they go? new religion?
~W~
from what ive seen of them, its just saying there is nothing greater than myself, therefore i must be strong.
seems more a philosophy than a religion.
~W~
What kind of "vampires" are we talking here, though? Hollywood supernaturally fast and strong, or what? If Hollywood vampires started flying out of the woodwork, I think the Powers that Be would launch a war on them, because they would feel threatened.
gods i love larson!
so folks...let that be a lesson to ya!!!
lol
~W~
Personally, I seriously doubt that anyone would believe them coming out and saying they are a vampire for one. I think my reaction would be much the same. Most would be like "yeah right prove it" and then they would have to do so just to make a valid point. Most vamps try to keep this whole secret "veil" thing going, keep the mystery in check from people doing harm unto them (this is just an example btw), and i think if they were meant to "come out of the closet" so-to-speak, would have a LOOOOONG time ago. Since that hasn't happened, I'm gonna assume if such a person did exist, they must have some hellacious rules going on to keep such a person in line. If it's not rules, then what else would it be? Fear? I don't know but I don't see someone coming out anytime soon cuz most people's view on society is a negative one.
we have no problem accepting that someone is gay if they say they are. we don't ask them to actually have sex with someone before we believe them, why if someone comes out about being a vampire do we require proof?
Because if someone really wants to come out and say they are a vampire, a myth creature, then it's fairly obvious why people would seek some form of validation to their claims. A homosexual isn't nearly the same outcoming as someone claiming to be a vampire like from the movie sense of the word.
You make a valid point, however, at one point in time "coming out" as a homosexual was almost the same as claiming to be a mythical creature lol
hey...the president of iran said that (at least in iran) homosexuals are actually mythical.
really...he said that
still, the "classic" vampire of hollywood, lore, and legend would need to be proven to be accepted.
after all..if someone showed claiming to be from planet zort, how many would take him/her (it?) seriously without proof?
for the purposes of this discussion, lets say that our vampire that came out, provided proof. he takes a policemans loaded gun and empties it into his own chest...then he continues to stand. this is all on live television.
ok...at that point, what is the reaction of the nation? of the world?
and what would iran do? lol
~W~
no see thats where people say its just an illusion. people are more willing to believe something when it isn't staring them straight in the face.
what I mean is this many people of the world.holds some sort of dark fascination about the vampire. ns he to this many would seek him or her out. but then the mob mentally would come out and te parts of as a race would seek to kill this thing as well mankind is not known for its tolerance of things not like us. it is seen in every deed man as a species does in everyday life. I guess I am saying that we would kill it with out even truly looking at.te broader picture
well yeah people are stupid in large groups, thats how mobs get started
Disbelief, animosity, loneliness, agitation, insaninty...anger, hate, retribution, violence, research, understanding, unholy ascention, then a more spiritual calm.
Yey, tho I am but a Lowly maggot, I SEE ME!
I think the humans would try to kill him/her. As it is in their nature to destroy what the don't understand and fear!
I think people will be split into 2 categories...
Some will believe.... those are the ones who will have members who will claim to be a vampire too, based on this celebrity's claim...
Others will not believe and find everyone who believes these claims to be crazy.
If someone would come out and say they are the real thing.
The news media would have a field day with it
and the Goverment would love it, to have news
that is negative taken away from them.
The whole premise of Trueblood and the fiction it came from was on gays "coming out of the closet." And that was predicated on the invention of artificial blood so that humans would feel safe.
I don't think 1 vampire would make such an announcement because that vamp could be overwhelmed by plenty of humans, no matter how strong or fleet of foot.
So, such vamp would be relegated to the fringes. Maybe join an online site.
It (the vamp) might catch the attention of a wealthy tycoon interested in exploiting its blood.
So, my point is the human reaction would be varied: fear, spirituality, disgust, entrepreneurial.
But the vamp would need some protection, and fast.
I agree Blood Mother,
There would have to be a 'package' in place, something to substantiate the announcement.
Just like it happens here on VR, people 'coming out of the closet' then bulking at offering anything to educate others.
So a prepared publicity package would be needed.
Too many are ready to parade that which they believe makes them extraordinary.. yet they fail when it comes to articulating that which they reference to conclude their convictions.
that was to be my next question bm...
ok, so a vampire similar to dracula or lestat admitted to what he or she was....
would this being have the power to say the hell with the masses? could he or she successfully hide in the shadows an from those shadows subdue those masses?
~W~
What motivation would there be? Hypothetically why would a vampire reveal themselves to the public?
Really, I can see why someone would want to "come out of the coffin"
imagine hiding your true self from everyone around you- friend, Family, co-workers....
it is similar to asking "Why would anyone want to tell everyone that he/she is gay?"
Funny... I wonder if the person to admit it was thought to be insane? I know it was thought to be an illness to think you have feelings for the same gender
It is like a huge lie, that is far better at this time than telling the truth.
But even so, the urge is there.
No one wants to lie
But, opting to come out, is pointless, unless one is willing to accept that people will have questions. and to accept that there will be people who will accept them as just another belief, along with all the others.. when one comes out, and projects that they are extraordinary.. then yes people will consider them to be delusional. Evn others who identify as vampires draw a line, and there are individuals who press that line.. all for shock value.. the only way for to avoid being lumped with such individuals is to ante up.. and bring something substantial, like a summary of ones ideals. a criteria one uses to conclude they are a what they claim to be.. not just.."Its what I feel."
I would suspect that after a traditional arc-type vampire revealed their presence, that all those who identify as vampires (except the lifestylers) would boast.. "We Told You So.." when in actually all they ever said (in mantra) was "That arc type is not what vampires are."
so if an arc-typical vampire came out to the public, I would suspect that said vampire had had enough with the mussing down of the term, and phrase..
You know, it would also depend on "how" they went about "coming out." As in Queen of the Damned, Lestat came out as a vamp, but also had his rockstar image...so many people, aside from a few "true" believers, the Talamasca, and, of course, the rest of vampire kind, thought it was just a gimmick.
So, if this person claimed to be a vamp as a celebrity, it could presumably be brushed off as their "thing" or their "style." Their gimmick.
If a "regular" person tried to "come out," it would be more likely to be taken as "that person is off their rocker."
why? for lestat, he did it just because he had an urge...he loved to break the rules.
its also a bit like someone in high school just outing themselves. perhaps they just have tired of hiding their nature.
perhaps they dont feel any need to prove anything, they are only saying this is me. if your my friend, great, but if you cant accept what i feel i am, then perhaps your not my friend in the first place.
but we are supposed to be discussing a hollyweird vamp.
why would dracula out himself? ok, here is a possiblility:
ive lived 600 years, and now i need something new. for centuries people have feared me and wanted to kill me, and now...now i want to just live my life as myself.
ok...admittedly unlikely...more like he would change is name to dave smith or something like that, and tell the world he is an accountant from buffalo...although he might tell a few friends who he was...just for grins...
what motivates people to do anything really?
~W~
A craving for attention? Yearning for adulation or acceptance? Gnawing loneliness?
i think that if after 600 years you suddenly reveal yourself to the world I would say you were lonely and wanted attention
any of the above...all of the above...
if you spent 6oo years hiding from the world that might want to kill you because your a monster, might not you go slightly mad?
and we are also talking about vlad dracula here...not the most stable individual.
lol
~W~
yeah, what family doesn't enjoy impaling a few hundred turks or belong to a secret order.
To answer the poster's original question, I probably would not believe them. Not at first anyway. However, I wish something like that would realhly appen! That would be so friggin cooL!!
apparently sexy thinks that would really really really be friggin cool.
:c)
as for impaling a few hundred turks....
well, if my own land of texas was invaded by a mass of enemy enemy that were culturally completely at odds with me and the people of this land, id want to impale them as well.
hmmm....er...no...no, never mind...
LOL
~W~
I'm busy on Vampire Wars TRYING to resurrect Vlad the Impaler! lol Anyway on a more serious note, I think the idea of Vlad being a vampire is a little overrated considering he was only a leader that was a hero for his country and a monster to others that opposed him. *Shrugs* I really don't see how people consider Bathory or Vlad a vampire ....
i dont think anyone ever thought vlad was a vamp...thats only because bram stoker needed a name for his vamp, and dracula just sounded cool to him.
bathery did bathe in blood, but again, i dont think she was considered a vamp.
but assuming vlad showed up and said howdy yall, im dracula...no really...
and he proved it.
think the hunt would be on for him?
~W~
They would be escourted to the mental hospital for evaluation, yet throughout history many individuals have been deemed "Vampires" by society for their vampiric actions.
That Doru is the rub,
When it comes to people claiming to be vampires, it is much more reasonable to come out as practicing vampirism,. Personally I would reason that any actual arc type vampire would eventually be discover, through their activity.. it would take a league of dedicated minion to cover all the activity of a arc typical vampire.
All those who identify as vampire, are adamant about "hollywood vampires" not existing. So my question as always is, if the Arc Type vampire does not exist, then what is it that they seek to replace the arc type vampire with?
i actually was suggesting that ol vlad allowed someone to shoot him and he just stood there.
how would they take him to the psyche ward?.
dabbler...we are talking about vampires in fiction.
~W~
It is good to see a thread that relates to the arc Typical vampire, my apologies for wavering topically.
Though I stick to the post, that Those who identify as Vampires would have a plate full of crow to eat, if an arc typical vampire went public.
And of course we all know.. There would have to be a Reality show.

This thread is really getting scattered- i.e. other people asking questions beyond the author, frivolous posts, one word answers, sub-discussions. Please stay on topic- I just deleted several posts.
Find some stories about the Japanese star Gackt. He has been quoted in telling the media that he is a 1000+ year old Aristocrat/Immortal. It has only made him more of a mega star, much in the same way it did for Lestat in the aforementioned movie.
i agree kyriele
but the question now is this...
could the full power of the govt be able to capture a vampire of even medium intellect if he or she didnt wish it?
and if it came to a war...would we be able to prevail?
~W~
Vampires, even without all the cliche weaknesses are not invulnerable. I think the whole fear would be over played. The only thing that would change would they would lose anonymity, the one thing they would have going for them.
By full hypothetical reasoning, if an arc type vampire existed, then so would the Arc type Hunters exist.. a check, and balance.
Personally I think the public will act with disbelief and hundreds of people will come out onto national television to tell us why its impossible for this person to exist.
And then be inundated with others who say the same thing but will be proven to be false.
Teens will be running around thinking Edward Cullen really does exist and the poor actors life will become a living night mare.
Lastly, I don't think he would last long in public, before he was kidnapped by some government and experimented on to create super soldiers and immortality serums for the rich. I think it will happen so fast that everyone will be asking weeks later, "whatever happened to that weirdo who said he was a vampire?"
i still think the human mind will over power his or her sense of reason. with of the human race we all have this at unholy attraction to any thing of the super naturall being werewolf or vampire or any such being. As with all humans we all fear death and growing old so with that being said it would only be natural for humans of all ages and of all races flocking to this being to see if it true and then in doing so there primal and at times irrational sense of fear will kick in and then they will want to kill this being. so i think it would truly be a dual edge blade in the sense they will flock to it and at the same time they will want to kill this thing as they will not understand it nor wish to. but that is my opinion. whether or not this would truly happen is plain to see as there is no such thing as the arc type vampire.
I have to agree with what ObsidianFury said. Althought I do think all the "hunter" and "slayer" wannabes would come out of the woodwork and try to hunt and kill our hero
One factor that would drive a an Arc Type vampire to come out would be a depletion in resources. Imagine the Freaks that would flock!
that is true. but i still not sure. they could have many reasons for coming out in to main stream in world of man. only they them selves could truly say such a thing
well if it was a celebrity that no one pays attention to anymore like fred savage, it could be a way for them to get attention to their dead careers
that is true but in the end it comes down to the simple fact that we as a race are pretty fucked in the head when it comes to these sorts of that things but in the end it would come down to cold hard facts
most people will disagree... simply because it is something they do not understand. =]
people tend to act that way towards things they don't understand.
I don't think that would happen that they would expose themselves for fear of the consequences.
But the general public reaction would be animosity and fear unfortunately. There would be for sure disbelief. People fear often what they don't understand. Sure, movies such as Twilight have a shed a trendy light on vampyrism and fans of those movies will flock to befriend the vampyre but they'd likely never get to them because they'd be busy attempting to not be captured. It would certainly be interesting nonethless.
Then there is are those who would ask, what of it? As in big deal! Obviously it if such an arc typical vampire existed, it had not made a significant, outstanding presence. so what, so where to go from there.
I personally find it curious that people who identify as vampires now assume that anyone who doesn't react emphatically to their claims are afraid for some reason.
People would be curious as to the specifics of the individual announcing their nature. They would have to expect that there would be request for observation, and research.
Implying that everyone fears the idea of vampires existing is rather telling.
i think there would be a wide variety of reaction...
everything from people apologizing for all the staking in history, to people screaming that they are satan spawn and wanting to kill them.
might even be someone that said...who cares? i really like cheese! LOL
~W~
