I was reading this article below and a few things came to mnd. Do you think that the favorite color of yours defines you ? Do you hold the charactoristics of this color ?

Color and Personality Traits

Color and personality traits have a closer relationship than we think. Just as our personalities are continually evolving, the colors we prefer also change through our experiences, environment, age, and gender.
For example, women are more aware of certain shades and prefer red to blue while men prefer blue to red. Elderly people prefer lighter tones over darker ones. People with schizophrenia tend to prefer neutral hues such as white, black, brown, and gray. People with bipolar disorder tend to prefer chromatic hues such as red, yellow, green and blue.
People have different tastes regarding the spectrum of colors, and this can actually tell us something about who they are, or how they are feeling on a particular day. In fact changes throughout your life can/will cause you to change the preferences of your likes and dislikes, which is just as well since the same old thing every day would become boring. So, as you get older and more mature, you will find that you like different shades, flavors, and even scents. This is neither good nor bad; it just means you are changing in some way.
All right, now think of your favorite color (don't let the above introduction sway your thinking; as though you can help it, but try) and read the descriptions below.

Black - Like: This is rarely chosen as a favorite color because it is actually the negation of color. The person who chooses black may have a number of conflicting attitudes. You may be conventional, conservative and serious, or you may like to think of yourself as rather worldly or sophisticated, a cut above everyone else or very dignified.
Dislike: Since black is the negation of color, it may be a total negative to you. It is the eternal mystery, the bottomless pit, the black hole. You are uncomfortable with the super-sophisticated and feel insecure in their company. You like real people and are not dazzled by dignitaries.

Blue - Like: The color of tranquility and peace, blue tends to be the most preferred color universally. Although cool and confident (or wishing to be), blues can be vulnerable.
Dislike: A dislike of blue may mean restlessness--a need to break away from the sameness that bores you. Perhaps you would like to change your job, or even your life, and long for more excitement.

Brown - Like: The color of Mother Earth is the hue that is associated with substance and stability. A preference for brown means you have a steady, reliable character with a keen sense of duty and responsibility. Family life is very important to you.
Dislike: You probably fantasize about a lot of things, perhaps traveling with a circus or racing cars. Novelty excites you and routine drives you crazy.

Grey - Like: People who prefer this most neutral of all shades are carefully neutral about life. You like to protect yourself from the hectic world, wrapping yourself with the security blanket of a noncommittal color. You are the middle-of-the-road type, cool, conservative, composed and reliable.
Dislike: To dislike grey is to dislike neutrality. You would rather be right or wrong, but never indifferent. Routine bores you. You look for a richer, fuller life.

Green - Like: Nature's most plentiful color promises a balance between warmth and coolness, so green people are usually stable and balanced types. This is the good citizen, concerned parent, involved neighbor and PTA member--the joiner of clubs and organizations. You are fastidious, kind and generous.
Dislike: Since lovers of green are usually very social, joiners and "keep up with the Joneses" types, dislikers of green will often put those qualities down. You may have an unfulfilled need to be recognized that causes you to pull away from people rather than join them. Yours is a no-nonsense approach to life. You don't like others to be coy with you--you would rather they be direct. Nostalgia is not your thing; you live in the present.

Orange - Like: Orange is a combination of red and yellow, so it takes on many of the characteristics of both colors. It is vibrant and warm, like the autumn leaves. Orange has the physical force of red, but it is less intense, less passionate. Lovers of this color work and play hard are adventurous and enthusiastic.
Dislike: Life is definitely not a dish of gumdrops for the rejecter of orange. Nothing flamboyant appeals to you. You dislike too much partying, hilarity, loud laughter, showing off and obvious intimacy. As a result, you may be difficult to get to know, if not a loner.

Pink - Like: This is a softened red, so it tempers passion with purity. It is associated with romance, sweetness, delicacy, refinement and tenderness. Pink people are interested in the world around them, but they do not throw themselves into participating with the ardor of the red person. Violence in any form is upsetting to you.
Dislike: Soft, medium tints do not evoke much emotion--many people are indifferent to pink. It is sweetness, innocence and naiveté--red with the passion removed.

Purple - Like: This hue has an aura of mystery and intrigue. The purple person is enigmatic and highly creative, with a quick perception of spiritual ideas. Purple is often preferred by artists. People who like to consider themselves different from the common herd or unconventional often prefer purple.
Dislike: If you dislike purple, you probably have no desire to be artistic or creative. You feel that purple represents snobbery, falseness, exaggeration and vanity. You pride yourself on your sincerity and genius, and sometimes misjudge others because you do not like them or approve of them.

Red - Like: Just as red sits on top of the rainbow, you like to stay on top of things. You have a zest for life. Remember that red can speed up the pulse, increase the respiration rate and raise blood pressure. It is associated with fire, heat, and blood, so it is impossible to ignore. And so are you (or would like to be).
The key words associated with red are winner, achiever, intense, impulsive, active, competitive, daring, aggressive and passionate. Red people are exciting, animated, optimistic, emotional and extroverted. Desire is the key word; they hunger for fullness of experience and living.
Dislike: Since red is primarily associated with a zest for life, excitement and passion, a dislike of this hue could mean that these feelings are a bit much for you to handle at this point in your life. Perhaps you are bothered by the aggressiveness and intensity that red signifies.

White - Like: White is cleanliness and purity, and those who prefer white are neat and immaculate in their clothing and homes. You are inclined to be a cautious buyer and shrewd trader, but critical and fussy.
Dislike: Since white represents cleanliness and purity, to dislike white does not exactly mean that you are a messy person, but it does mean that you have never been obsessed with order. You are not very fussy. Things that are a little off-center are much more interesting to you than those that are perfectly in line.

Yellow - Like: Yellow is luminous and warm because it is strongly associated with sunshine. It sparkles with optimistic activity. Yellow people are highly original, imaginative, idealistic, creative, artistic and often spiritual.
Dislike: If you dislike yellow, you usually dislike the qualities that this luminous color has. You are a realist--a practical, down-to-earth person and probably critical of others who are not.

Colours are wavelengths, of course it is just a coincidence that some of us only feel comfortable with red black etc and bats, leeches, spiders and crows are black.
Personally, always wondered why the church likes red and black...odd that? Unless they're really on the other side?
He Hee- Father , I have a confession a doubt, are you are the father of lies?
No of course not child...and then Pope Benedict promptly orders the red papal slipper from Prada for 200 dollars a shot... now that's comedy. Gotta love the mafia.

I love the color Purple but also love other colors as well. to me purple is a royal color, not that i am royal or anything, it just makes me feel warm and i guess that is where i get the ideas for my poems.
i also love blue, green, silver, pink, i see different hues when i look at pictures, that is what draws me to them. but yes i think colors define us and it also depends on what makes you happy to.some colors make u happy some empower you other just make you feel like u are not even there. so for me i chose a color that will make me stand out in a crowd if the person that u are hoping to attract or to notice you will know right where you are

Nice one AlieNation!

I would have to say that I tend to agree more than disagree. I myself prefer darker colors than the lighter ones....the lighter ones cause headaches and the darker ones just make me feel more comfortable.

Reading about black, that was interesting.

to me i think the things we like color, art, music, and the like defines each of us as a person but with on singular item that truly can not define a person as a whole being as we are things of many different intrestes so to say only one thing defines us that is a falsehood as it can not truly dwell deep with in each of our souls. but that is only my opinion on the matter.

Colors and their various hues have long been known to affect the human psychology and emotional response. As AlieNation points out, all the information we receive, whether by sight, sound, touch, taste...any of it...all is percieved in wavelengths by our very electrical brains.

Color psychology is fairly accurate and specifically selected colors are picked in painting rooms both in prisons and doctor's offices. "Blue" rooms are calming while a Bright Yellow is likely to set someone off who's already on edge.

Not only are colors effective in our emotional response, but also in our psychology. Every wonder why marketing for Cash Loaners paint their signs bright green? What is the instant association.

As for the article, I thought it was a good one..:) and fairly accurate on my count of like and dislike..^^

I can see by what you mean.about colors of clothes people put on..at diffrent ages and how they are or act. But,anyone can choose any color they like, even change in the likings of colors.I know of many who loved the color pink or red,but then after 12 years passed.. they hate thoes colors and decided to like the earthy colors instead.their lives changed none.
this also reminds me of arura(spelling bad)..colors.
Colors of peoples spirits and energies.Like mood rings and such.but, about with all things colors matter. It helps alot of beings 'tell' onto whats happening or going on with somthing else.Like when an apple in not ripe, its green or yellow.when its ready to be eatin..its red.Or when a bug is a bright color,it a sighn to others that it cant be eatin.
when people choose colors that put on,some may have meanings and some may not.
but,it is curious..in thought..that maybe this is very true for ..well.. at least 60% of the human world.

i don't think they define us.... but I do believe that through life and our experiences [in turn, our outlook on life] we may find different colors our favorites depending on the circumstances of life.... over the years, my favorite colors have changed, and so has my life [drastically] so I do believe they can correlate.

My colors are blue and green. While I have many of the characteristics described in the article, there are some that I dont have. I wouldnt say that who I am is defined by colors, merely that there are colors that we are more comfortable wearing.

My daughter has recently decided that her favorite color is orange. Although it wasnt mentioned inthe above article, orange is also the color of creativity. My daughter is creative, she can sculpt, sing, and draw exceptionally well. Can she do this because her color is orange? NO, like most things it was inherent. However, the color orange does suit her well. Therefore, I would say that the color a person likes fits who they are but doesnt define that person.

Well, many people don't define the color Black as a color. I dress 99% of my life in Black, and when I die, I will be bury in a black suit. Now, how that define me? for some, weird and for others, the new Johny cash. LOL

Colors, imbue reactions in people. It is a Visual stimuli, this is why as odd as it can be some people hate sports teams, and others love them.

As for personal definition....

We do or we don't, this is the definition of life. Truly if you must have one it is what we do. This does include the things we say, the things we think, the very things we plan. Provoking a sense of group similar behavior by placing small pre-set definitions into likes and dislikes is not the way to discover ones self.

Finding out what is most important, doing what we can to get to those important things, and accepting defeat and lose even though we shall try again are defining moments in a persons character, in ourselves.

if your fav colors were black and red, according to the the blub at the beginning, your a very conflicted individual.

i dont think i actually have a fave color..i do love black...but i also love red and green.

it does seem just a bit silly to me to attempt to define someone by a color preference.

Do you suppose that's all innate, or is there an environmental component? I think society and culture do much to reinforce certain parts of the color spectrum. Not just towards a specific gender, but to different ethnic groups and socio-economic classes.

Definately environmental too- blue for boys, pink for girls etc.

Research found that young children have preferences for the primary colours (sorry have no references) hence the brightly coloured toys, nursery furniture, associated with childhood. Incidently that is a cross-cultural thing (universal) all young children show preferences for primary colours as opposed to say pastels or muted colours.

in ways yes i do feel that it is also do to ones enviroment that also is to be taken in to account on how we feel towards each color. in ways as it was said before we are raised and introduced to certain colors based up the social enviroments around us. so in many ways it is our upbringing that contributes to our perception of certain colors and how that certain color affects our mentality and mood as such based on that color.

I see there are many intresting views on this..

As for do colour's define us. my answer to this is for some colour's would define us. but for thoes more focused on this..

No they would'nt as colour's are just a guide to whom we are.. we each may have a unique colour to define us..

And some colour's may be the same but may have diffrent denations for others whom have the same colours..

But Colour's are colour's just diffrent because colour's are pretty and to motivate our imgination..

That is just my view. but we are all diffrent. and that I respect that.

I loved reading all of the different views about this article and the questions that you posed Mystic.

I know that hospital's and other places (already mentioned) has been used to boost moral and healing. In a work place, I can understand why people would get bored with the environment there because there is usually no color. I do not think that colors define us but they can present the mood that we are in. I am like a coat of many colors because of the variety of colors that I like or feel better with. I guess that I could say the aura would be what I am thinking of. I will also agree with the posts that Oceanne posted as well. Everything is connected in some way shape of form.

This is one of the best, and I mean best, threads I have seen in a very long time.
Very interesting to read the color info and I must say, I do see the truth in the association of colors with the things written.
I have had my favorite colors change from year to year...especially during major changes in my life and it seems pretty accurate.
Also, I have noticed in my own life that I am instantly cheered when looking at yellow or calmed when looking at pink, etc.

did you know Russians have the best color distinction?
at least, the ones that speak russian do.
It's because they are taught more colors. Basically speaking, english speakers only have like...11 or so standard colors, and any others are called those obscure names like "Cornflower blue" or "Eggshell white"
while russians have specific names that they use more frequently. A lot of perception is based off of that sort of thing, and i think color attraction is based on things very similar to that.

Yes! Colors do define us.

In the simplest of terms - we have a favorite shirt - and a favorite color.

Depends on the mood - for example, if you're sad or feeling gloom - as cliche' as this sounds - you wear black.

And when you're feeling lucky or good inside, you wear your favorite shirt which is in your favorite color.

Tarquin, that just means we define ourselves through the use of colors

I have to agree with King`T.
It's easier to see a mood through colours than it is to... say, tell their emotion from a stance or whatnot.

I have to agree with Tarquie, it's far easier to tell someone's mood through use of color than through their stance, for example.

I will have to disagree with King T on this one. Colors don't define us because not everyone uses colors to show the mood that they are in at a certain time. So in this point I will disagree with you. Another reason why I would disagree with King T is because not all colors are visible to the other person specially if the colors are not there to be seen.

No, i dont believe i did.
Colors don't define us, we define ourselves.
Different colors mean different things to different people, so the actual color itself standing alone is completely meaningless, lacking any sort of mood-related definition, until a person sees it and attaches it to a mood.

But anyway, instead of arguing for the simple sake of debating, and responding to what you actually meant without playing with ambiguous points...

i'm not convinced people work that way.. some wear things because it makes them feel a way that they wouldnt otherwise feel (Someone who is sad but wants to feel happy could listen to a happy song, or wear a color that makes them happy) or perhaps the outfit they are wearing is just the first thing they grabbed. It's kind of narrow to associate color with moods, and i do believe that the definition of a person far transcends both emotion and the emotional influence a person might think comes from a color.

I would have to agree with Carbion on this on colors alone have no purpose or exact meaning until someone puts that purpose or meaning to that color.

To me, it seems like a horoscope or the zodiac, them pick out a bunch of stars, play connect the dots, give it a name. and describes the type of person you are. people will tend to find the good traits they believe they have and embrace it.

Of course, here you chose the color, while you don't have much say so on when your born, but the same general idea applies.

When you wake up, kick your toe, and burn your food, (Or do whatever your morning consists of) you're going to wear a nice, bright colour like yellow, eh?
The point of what Tarquin said, I gathered, is that it's a show of mood, for the person. Person. Singular. It's a personal reflection.
Yeah, it may not be the same for everyone, but it's usually a personal reflection on the mood of someone.

There is no right or wrong answer here, either. It's each to his/her own opinion, and some people believe that the colour worn on a particular day has meaning in the person's mood/whatever.

I agree DrCullen. Colours dont define us, we define ourselves by using colour though. We are drawn to certain colours and that is a highly personal thing - some days I feel black, others, I feel white.

Advertisers for example though can influence us by using colour. The easiest way to explain that is how they use primary colours for i.e. childrens toys, clothes, or nursery furniture and that is based on research into the visual preferences of children to indicate trends and preferences. It works too, kids prefer red, yellow, and blue to black, white and grey.

I follow with cabrion as well. Material type also factors into any appareal equation as well. even a black environment does not dictate a depressed dweller resides there, it could well be the lair of a person who needs focus, and black is a color that does not distract, though personally I would opt for gray as a "static atmospheric" color.

I don't think colours define us, but I think colours tend to effect people's moods, emotions and feelings, and different people have their own way of defining colours with their own perspective. Colours can effect people in different ways, because they tend to have their own meanings for certain colours, like in the tarot and candle magic for example.

My favourite colour is blue, and it describes my rather accurately. However a colour doesn't fully define who I am as a person, so much has gone into my make up as a human being, how I was raised, my past experiences, my beliefs, etc they are what define who I am. I think your favourite colour just describes a certain facet of your personality.

I do believe that different Colour frequencies relate to different psychological and physiological aspects in both the body and mind by suppling the body and soul with different energies.

Define being the keyword here.
I agree with Rogue, Oceanne and LordDrarnus have posted. They say it all.
It's not a defining point, but the colours used can be an indicator to the moods and whatnot.
