"The sasabonsam is a forest vampire which originates from the Ashanti people of Southern Ghana but is also found in Togo and the Ivory Coast.
Little is know about this creature outside of native folklore, which is prone to exaggeration and contradiction. The creature is described as about man sized with short, stubby arms, but has been reputed to have a wingspan of up to 20 feet. It is also often given iron teeth. Sasabonsams are rarely seen nowadays, but they were known to sit on treetops and catch unsuspecting passers-by to suck their blood.
Much like the kongamato, the sasabonsam may be a conflation of representatives from multiple baramins, combined with some Ashanti imagination. More research is definitely needed."

I have never heard of this before.

I have a co-worker who is from Ghana and I will ask him what he knows of this legend.

My co-worker from Ghana tells me this "All B.S. made up to scare the kids and keep them out of the Forests". The rural areas obviously contain many of Africa's more dangerous wild animals. The youth do not have a large fear of these as they are part of everyday life. But a mythical vampire with iron teeth...THAT's something to be frightend of!

It's just one person's opinion, mind you and I have no no stake in this either way. So please don't shoot the messenger!

While vampire bats are common in rain forests and according to wildlife experts cannot survive a night without feeding. Your friend from Ghana can also, dependent upon his background, of blood-leting rituals done in the forest. Some of these rituals were rumoured to be cannibalistic though I have nothing to proffer to say one way or the other.

Morrigon, I thought the same thing -- what kind of mentality? In my search I came upon a definition for vampiric folklore. Since it is quite lengthy but well worth the read, I'll post a portion and the link for what I've found.

I don't want to sound pathetic or corny, but they sound like the kind I always dream about... and they are always in the forest in my dreams... lol

never heard of sasabonsam before and its also my first time to hear that there's a vampire with wings----well i dont believe that vampires can turn into bats.

different culture have different legends and itll be better if there's a sighting of sasabonsam to prove that it is for real

Lilith who is thought to be the first vampire was said to have grown wings and flown out of the garden of Eden. So with that in mind maybe it is possible to have vampires with wings. This creature sounds like it could be more like a chuppacabra though
