Vampires turn up in folk stories in many parts of the world. In Britain and Ireland, many faeries have vampiristic tendencies, and set out to suck the blood of humans. On th Isle of Man, it was believed that if water were not set out for them to drink the faeries would suck the bloo of the sleepers in th house. They might also ble them, and make a cake with the blood, and if the cake coul not be found, and eaten by the householders, they would waste away and die. A large number of faeries set out to seduce mortals in order to drain the strength and the life force from them, or even suck their blood in the form of a classical vampire. These include ANCHANCHU,AZEMAN,BOABHANSITH,CHUREL,
GELLO,GLAISTIC,HIBLA-BASHI,IELES,
LHIANNANSHEE,LANGSUR,LILLITH,MAHR PEY,and VADLEANY.

Like some vampires, many faeries are the ghosts of unbaptised children(the VILA, WISHT HOUNDS, SAMOLVILY, SPUNKIES, and TARAN), murder victims (YARA, BEAN-NIGHE, DRUGGAN HILL BOGGLE, RUSALKI), or women who have died in childbirth(BEAN-NIGHE,CHUREL, ELK, LANGSUIR, PRAY, TZITSIMINE).

In more modern fiction, the vampire is always revenant, but it occurs in more older myth as a living sorcerer or witch, or as a supernatural demon such as LILLITH, the first wife of Adam.

Centreal to the myth of the vampireis the age-old beliefs relating to blood. Many cultures held that blood was the animating spirit, or life force(lose alot of blood, and you die), or even that the blood contained the soul.Warriors would drink the blood, and eat the flesh of their enemies in order to gain their strength. On can see how the idea developed that if a corpse were to gain enough life force from drinking blood, then it could be animated.

Ancient magicians thought that sacrificed blood atractted spirits who would feed on it, and carry out the magicians bidding in return for the gift of blood. It was commonly thought that spirits are jealous of humankind's corporeal nature, and always hungry so that blood could give them strength, and form at least temporarily.

This information came from the Encyclopedia of the Faeries.. Written by Anna Franklin.

I have heard some of these tales but never really thought of fae as vampires but it does make some sense. I suspect one of man's early discoveries was that if too much of the red stuff was lost from a body it sickened and died. It would make blood become a very fascinating subject that has continued even into today.
I must admit when I think of the fae I always picture them as small folk such as pixies and brownies but now I'm trying to add fangs to their images. Odd to say the least.

There are many types of fairies that range in height like the tree sprites are up to 3 feet tall and have claws for climbing. But it is amazing that there is a vampire legend in every culture including the native peoples. We have the Wendigo who appears during the blood moon and you know it is him when you hear the whistling. Whistling is his warning that he is close but if you get caught out in the woods then the Wendigo will posses you and you will become the living vessel for the Wendigo to be able to feed on the blood of man

Tinkerbell with fangs. It's an interesting picture lol. Seriously though, it's another way of thinking about vampires. Fairies would be one way of getting blood from inside of a house without people turning into mist. I had not heard of vampire fairies. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Oooh, this is too interesting! I don't know why I'm delighted at the idea of mini-vamps flitting about, but I loved reading about them...gruesome!
Ive read variations of what households eat in order to save themselves; crushed bones, ash of a burnt heart, etc. Cake or bread was usually made and sometimes the whole family ate while other times it was only one person afflicted.

I've never heard of this, it doesn't surprise me though. There is mention of vampiric elves, why not fae? On the notion that there are "real" vampires out there, then why should we think it would be limited to humans?

I had never heard of the theory until it was presented here. But it doesnt seem that far fetched that there might be some vampiric faeries out there.

The ANCHANCHU, is a vampire faerie of the Aymara Indians in Peru. He travels in whirlwinds, and seduces his victims with pleasant smile's before draining their strength..

So this one sounds like it is more of a Psi vamp to me..

Here is some more information on LILLITH,

Lillith was the first wife of Adam whom he put aside for Eve. She is often said to be the mother of demons, or faeries, and to be a SUCCUBUS, LAMIA, or VAMPIRE.
God formed her from mud, and earth, and married her to Adam. However, she was not happy, and objected to taking the subservvient position during the act of love making- she wanted to be on top.
When Adam tried to force her to lie beneath him, she flew away. Three Angels found her beside the Red Sea where she was happily coppulating with demons, giving birth to a brood of children called lilin, or liliot at the of a hundred a day.
According to Jewish folk tradition, Lillith preys on newborn babies. Giels were vulnerable up until they were twenty days old, and boys until they were 8 years old. Protective measures have to be taken against her, including the drawing of magic circles. She is also a Succubus who attacks men through their dreams, sucking their blood like a vampire.
The legend of Lillith suggests an alternative creation myth embedded in the biblical book of Genesis. She is probably a pragmatic demonization of an earlier Godess.

Fascinating folklore, thanks for posting this. I enjoy reading about the different myths and superstitions that comprise what is a vampire. It's true that mankind is a superstitious creature to begin with. And while our modern world leaves us with little reason for superstition (other than of each other unfortunately), there are still plenty of regions that devote understanding to folk remedies and folk explanation of illness and death.

My response is from a purely fictional source.

I am an avid fan and reader of all things Laurell K Hamilton. Her Meredith Gentry series is about the Fae and the different participants in the Unseelie Court. The Demi Fae are tiny and beautiful, but can be vicious as well. They *feed* on others of the court and gain their power and strength from their *donor* blood.

So, having said all this and with the fact I DO believe in Faeries...then I have to reply with a resounding YES!! The Faeries can and some probably are vampiric.

Might be true. But maybe storys of the truth..could be streched out into a wierd fairy-tale.Maybe someone seen that butterfly
that live on the african plains, watching it feed on blood instead of pollen, and made some kind of story about it being a blood drinking fairy.I forogt what that butterfly was called..But I seen it on animal planets,

In every faery tale there is either some element of truth or a lesson to be learned. The butterfly theory is a good one. More likely it was a way to keep people in there homes at night. As far as vampires being limited to the human race, silly human assumption. Why do we continue to believe we are the only beings capable of higher being?

If all of us beings believed that we are the highest being, then there would be NO rumors or story's about higher beings..smarter and faster and stronger. If people did not believe in a higher being the 'Man' storys,or myths would not exsist.I think they might like the idea of a higher being. They would just scared of it..if it was true..and destroy it.I think..storys are made up..to test 'man'.To see if they can handel such silyy or scary things.Like when the government tests us by vido games. When they time is EVER needed..when things get as real as the vido game, alot of 'man' or 'Woman' beings would be able to handel the though of it..and know what to do.
Like storys of the blood thirsty fairy.
Or of dragons or vampires or were wolves.
IF,indeed somthing ever happens to proove that they exsist..threw all thoes storys..
many WILL except it..more then without storys to warn the minds ahaid.

Interesting .. I come from Plymouth England, we are separated from Cornwall by the river Tamar and a corn wall. As children we were told to watch out for pixies and my friends in Cornwall were told to watch out for fairies. The story goes like this a great battle was fort between the pixies and the fairies and the corn wall keeps them divided to this day. I found out this story was a nice way of saying the remaining British Celtics were in Cornwall and Wales and the popes fairies were in the rest of the land, till this day Cornwall has it’s own tax and money system and has never been conquered by The church so it never paid the taxes.

PS tinker bell is a pixie not a fairy ;-)

They're similar but the main characteristics seem different. I mean, fairies dont really need to feed as we do... Humans are our source of energy and food. Sprites would rather toy with one than be straight about it.

Funny you should mention Indians, and their hunting aspects.. I know for a fact that the Black Foot Indian's believe that you carry the spirit with you of your kills in the hunt. Not that it is a life force, but more of a power animal. One that helps seeks the souls of other animals.~NFA

If a farmspeople could look no further than where their lords told tham, them who's to say this was notfertile ground for ignorance and the rise of faerie folk? Constantine, himself, was apagan until baptised over his deathbed....paganism ran free for quite the time before furrowing underground adn in teh shadows. I say I must subscribe to the possibilty.

Very true Dutchess, past tails do have a lot to do with historical events, especially when they originate all over the world. It reminds me of the time i asked a priest how he knew that the whole Noah's arc thing happened, he said: "Well not only is it written in god's word (he means the bible here) but there are stories of this even all over the world."
Funny i asked him if that made warewolfes and vamps real as you hear stories of them all over the world, he denounced their exsistance. But anyway his argument for events that are only read or heard about are valid when they exsist all over the world.

fayries have been assosciated with many different source of myth and beleif, plus they come in different sizes and shape. I know someone mention tinkerbel and the taugh of her with fangs made me laugh especially sicne I imagine her bitting cpt Hook lol, so anyway seriously, since they come in like I said diferent shape and size, they could be a good vampire, plus since they usualy possess several powrs hidden then it would make it possible for them to enter homes, or boats or other places to feed themself
