What is your personal defintion of magic and to what degree do you think it can affect the world/events?
Magic is the personal power, will, and energy that you put out in the world.
Just my simplified definition.
Magic Is the illusion Of greater power , purpose. We use the term magic to explain Many lose thing's or personal tie's. We use it to illistrate great things and weak alike. It's what I call, An over used Word. And even some argue on it's spelling, Magic/Magick/Magik.
That’s an interesting way of looking at it, shade, and I have had many similar thoughts in the past. I believe magick is taking the energy that is already there, and simply bending it. For no energy can be created or lost.
I see it as taking energy from a greater force, or "thee great force" (I have no idea what that means, by the way) and just using it for a need. But you must respect this force and only use it for something true. That is why it comes to most as a rarity.
WHat you take and use is that from what is called lay-line's. Equvelent to tetonic plate's in a sense. In certain area's where they cross is prime place's to cast. Also very Abnormal happening's from wench are formed from these place's. One must be careful as well as not to be tainted by all the meanings that flow throughout.
Lay-lines server the purpose to ciculate energy from one point of the earth to the next. Like a Vein or nerviouse system in a human.
Ah I see. Energy is all around us in this world, we *are* energy, we are life, and that is enough proof that energy circulates. So I really do agree with the theory that magick circulates as well, for magick in many sinces is energy... correct?
My only thing to is that I don't believe that it just limited to our earth. I believe that it is something more vast, something that touches places far beyond our universe.
You are correct.
Back a long time ago, As you here from drudic circles, This wasn't a religion but a science. Druids were doctor's lawyers and teacher's of their time. Even advisor's to Kings'. But a religion did form but not as many know it.
Their were to major scinces associated in druidism.
Celestial and Terra Sciences.
Stars and Earth.
One party assumed that only we existed and another spectated that we were not the whole, we were part of the whole.
Lets see...personal definition of magic. That would have to be anything you can do or create by visualiztion when theirs nothing else around you to help. And I believe it affects everything. I've seen results on both sides.
I agree with Raveneyes, Magic is personal effects...
How you see it making a difference or impact is in the eye of the beholder right?
magic to me is a personal power, or a power you can chanel or call with people or tools to focus energy with
Strange things have and will continue to happen.
When ever I practice magic it is only to put myself in the state of mind to encourage sucess. For example you feel more determined and more reasured that you will achieve what you desire.
I think of magic as being a force that's not entriely explainable. I would call faith magic. I would call supernatural activities a form of magic...
I don't believe in "magic" such as card tricks and pulling a penny from someone's ear... I do believe in the power of one's will to change the envirement around them if they are stronger than what they are trying to change.
I believe in the Earth's magic. I believe that you can possibly tap that magic.
I believe in the magic of faith too. Faith can inspire greatness in people... not just goodness, it can be terrible tragerdy... thousands have died in the name of "God" ... but the activities faith does cause is great as in large, big, huge... how can that be anything but a form of magic?
hmmmm....magic...the gathering and dierecting of the energy that flows in all things...its the directing part thats tricky...
As to what I Said, A short word with many Definition's. Anybody have any insightful history of this word or might I explain where the word came from?
I think magic is what you personally make it, and what you believe. Without belief, there would be no magic!
Ah I found a good source!!
The word magic ultimately derives from Magus (Old Persian maguš), one of the Zoroastrian astrologer priests of the Medes. In the Hellenistic period, Greek μάγος (magos) could be used as an adjective, but an adjective μαγικός (magikos, Latin magicus) is also attested from the 1st century (Plutarchus), typically appearing in the feminine, in μαγική τέχνη (magike techne, Latin ars magica) "magical art." The word entered the English language in the late 14th century from Old French magique.
Likewise, sorcery was taken in ca. 1300 from Old French sorcerie, which is from Vulgar Latin *sortiarius, from sors "fate", apparently meaning "one who influences fate." Sorceress appears also in the late 14th century, while sorcerer is attested only from 1526.
I think magic exists only in the heart of children and even if I were to believe in such things it wouldn't matter.........
Magick is commonly accepted as the ability of mankind to exert change upon our physical world by means of manipulating the upper world. Our intention and thought, whether it be through meditation, self-fulfilling prophecy, ritual, or prayer, is powerful when one invokes the subtle energies that flow between that which is hidden and that which is seen.
Some would propose that magick occurs through the use of correspondances; that it is actuated by and with the help of the celestial spirits or earth bound spirits.
I believe that magick works because of our innate ability to alter the subtle realms by means of the soul/spirit that is within. In conjunction with the use of ritual, magick becomes even stronger. We link objects of the physical world to the desires of our intent which lie in the unseen. Or we summon and call to our side the aid of what we have termed spirits and gods and goddesses to help us to move our desire and intent towards bending the shape of subtle level reality. And by means of magick, the unseen becomes manifest in our reality through a variety of methods, procedures, and principles and laws that govern the way the natural world works.
The art that purports to control or forecast natural events, effects, or forces by invoking the supernatural.
The practice of using charms, spells, or rituals to attempt to produce supernatural effects or control events in nature.
The charms, spells, and rituals so used.
The exercise of sleight of hand or conjuring for entertainment.
Indeed, wonderfully put Jenova. We can't tell you've been doing this a time or two. ;)
I also agree with Jenova there are many different forms of magick, some people believe the practice is just certain tricks done for entertainment, it's so much more than that.
its a power within, it can be good as for white magic or it can be bad as black magic, it is powerfull for some poeple gifted or/and skilled, or it is weak, but one thing is to have it another is to control it
(sorry hit the wrong button wanted to go get a window down sorry)
So as I said to control it is another thing, as it can be control by some who use it willingly other its not willingly, magic comes from inside, from the earth releasing its energy and the spiritual relam transanding its to the person that uses it
First my anal retentive preferred text book definition.
“Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.”
-Aleister Crowley
My personal definition is more simplified.
Magick is simply constructive hypochondria.
Well this might not be the definition everyone is looking for, but I feel there is a point to be made.
Someone said they don't believe in magic as in card tricks and such. Well, this form of magic can be very, very powerful in the right context. The idea behind performing "parlor tricks" isn't just for laughs and jokes from some magicians perspectives. Some, myself included, use it very sparingly and in potent forms.
To me, its a way to recapture that sense of awe we all tend to lose as we get older. When you are born, everything is fresh and new and inspiring. A blank piece of paper if you will. Then immediately we begin to categorize things. We learn the difference between up and down, right and wrong, the general rules of the world around us. All these ideas go into a specific category in our mind. Right now you could be putting my name is the crazy-nut-job category.
But what if something happens that has absolutely no explanation? Your mind staggers and wanders around trying to figure out which category this event goes into. But you cant find it. So what happens? You are left with a blinding sensation.
I could get into some serious details here that could probably fill a small book, but I think you get my general theory. Essentially my point is that even though it might have been all a "trick" The sensation it creates IS real and valid. Even therapeutic to some people. If not masked with jokes and with a presentation that has substance it can be a very powerful thing.
Just some food for thought. Feel free to put me into the crazy-nut-job category now.
-JS-
What is magic...
To me it is a sensation...
Many see it as something to harness and control. Maybe it makes them feel powerful.
I believe it to be a gift and I find the simplest things to be magical.
The first thing that comes to mind when I even think of the word magic is a cool breese, grass in between my toes and the feeling of complete collective harmony..that one second that can last a lifetime.
Personal definition of magic ... hmmm well lets see I feel it in the bending of energy and or will around you..
alot of peopl ein the world . believe in magic , supperstitions and what no t.. Some learn there abililities others are born with i t.. believe what you may but magic in some forms or what not does exist .. and is a way of life you others all around the world
Wow, I never thought of magic that way, JackofSpades, but I really agree!
That is really good way to explain "trick magic" which is a lot more than what people crack it up to be... which really is just repeating what you said :P
Magic is trickery, its an illusion to the eye. Some ppl are very great at it others are not.
Magic is energy from within. I believe we all have magic and the ability to use it. However, I also believe you must become one with yourself and find your center if you will to bring that energy to the surface to use it. It is very powerful and there are many things you can use to enhance your powers such as crystals, herbs, ect. so be very careful if you are not trained in a certain area.
I Personally Believe That Everyone Has A "Power Cell" In Them With The Ability To Make Changes (From Minor To Major), It All Depends On Your Beliefs And If Your Powers Are Strong Enough To Make A Change
I belive that everyone has abilities, some just know how to use them or are more in tune with them. Also, I have heard that everyone has a "magic core" within them that is basically what VampyricOrigins said.
I believe magic is whatever you make it out to be. No one has the same abilities... It's like personalities. Everyone will be good at something else and there are all kinds of variations depending on that person.
For me magick is endless possibilities... Is shaping your own life and making the best or the worse out of anything...
Magick is about willpower, energy and fulfillment... For me personally it is also about peace and harmony...
magic to me is whatever you set your mind to and it happens...some people have special abilities that tie into magic
sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worst....it really depends on how they use their "gifts" or abilities
i agree with all of you, magic is around us, within us. we breathe magic. just open your eyes and soul. get away from the materialism world. magic is beautiful. for me is also my spiritual life that calms me and relax me from this ugly world of ignorance.
magic is something that has to be channeled, and it's sometimes difficult for most people because they don't think they can do that. Fact of life, to many people look down on themselves.
I think that magik depends on the person. You can practice white or black or both and it depends on what god or goddess so it just all depends on your intrest.
I believe that magick is only as strong as the person performing it. Someone who practices a considerable amount would, in my opinion, have more strength than a novice. If a good portion of the world had a day, such as Earth day, a Magick day, I think that some good things could happen!
I think that tzaddi is spot on only hte power of your own beliefs can make things work
magic is the manipulation of hidden forces or intelligences to produce a desired result.
Magik is a power of ones inner strength, it molds ones will and makes it stronger, and make a person more in control of their enviorment, and themselfs...
Magic is the ability of one to become involved in the web of another.
It is a connecting of energies, the ability to help. It's the ability to see through change.
It is our reason to exist, it is what is used to fill in the blank holes until there is an explanation. Magic is what science was, and magic is science, religion, art, and education in all forms. There is no beginning or end to what can be seen as magic, just as there is no end to life in that there will always be something existing. The question is really what.
Magic is that, not knowing how or why something is, just that it is. And the greatest thing to magic is to let it be what it is and not try to make it into something that it is not.
Magic is just a word, that means different things to different people.
Magic can help you along and help out others.
It can change things dramatically.
But, everything in the universe is connected. Good and bad things happen for a reason. Nature isn't going to allow you to alter it permanently unless it is meant to be.
Magic can't change to world, magic is the world. People just forget and magic and nature will come around to remind them.
any act that will cause intentional change. that is the definition from wikipedia and it is as good as any.
Magick is defined differently by all of us. I use several types in conjunction with each other. Magick can be combined to suit our needs. there is no right or wrong way.
I believe in the essance of magic and the pureity of alchemy but weather or not you can change the world.......I don't think so but it can change things around you
magick is the art of creating a desired effect with willpower. That is what i believe
Magic in my opinion are phenominons created by the manifestation of human energies derived from wants, needs, and willfulness. Most of the time Magic is a trick of the mind.
Magik is arts and rituals based on any type of energies and are carried out based on the same factors as Magic, however the main different being Magik can or can not be an illusion.
the doing of unexplained, non-earthly events formed by a wiccan
Magic is not so much as an Illusion as it is a will and energy to change or create.
If you don't have the energy, belief or will to do magic, then it simply will not work. Magic is not something you can learn over night either, you aren't born with the ability to do magic, the skill comes to you over time and with much practice.
You're not going to get it right on the first try either. And even after years and years of built up skill- you can still mess up.
But back to my original statement, you can't do magic if you don't believe magic.
Same with Voodoo, which is just a branch of black magic, if you don't believe in your self or your skills, then your already standing on quicksand.
Magic is how you manifest your energy back to the world.
I think magick is a self-power. Does that make sense? I mean, like what RavenEyes said at the top.
The flow of energy and spirits in which to preform spells and to preform rituals, or bush becoming a good president.
Magic is the personal powers engulfed by each individual that sets them apart from the rest in a outright cry of individualism
Magic is a personal power and energy that comes from inside you .
it is the manipulation of energies and it can be learned
Magic is a gift that only some can possess, however it can also be learned with the right intent.....if you want to use it to do horrific things then you will not be able to possess it to the extent that you would if you wanted to do good in the world.....=)
I believe as others have said, it's the exercise of ones own will on the natural energies of, well, our existence and universe around us.
To me magic is a power or form of energy created by a ritual of some sort. When you cast a spell you are casting it out into the universe. To me that is magic.
I also think that magic is all around us. It just depends on the person and if they are open minded enough io see it. The rain, a thunderstorm, falling leaves. Those things are magic to me =)
nergy that can be used in many diffrent worlds and how it effects depends on how powerful you are when using it.
It is an illusion. The effect on the world is joy and mystry.
It can also be described as wonderous. I think it has an effect over everybody. People tend to be in awe of magic, sometimes scared as well.
well of course there would be some scared people when it comes to things that will never have a definite widely accepted definition
I think it is more the fear of the unknown. If we cannot explain something we fear it.
but that's just it. Sometimes it's better to enjoy things and not bother to find an explanation. Just because something can't be labeled or explained doesn't mean that it's harmful or bad. People need to understand that.
"Magic" is a word used to express our inability to understand what we have witnessed. The earliest uses of static electrical charges were seen to be magic or supernatural. Yet we today know they were strictly natural -- just misunderstood.
And while it's true that we tend to fear that which we don't understand, that is precisely the reason we should always seek to understand. That which we fear we attempt to destroy. And most of that destruction is totally without cause once understanding has been added to the mix. We needn't fear rattlesnakes, cockroaches, black cats or people who dress oddly. But we can, if we desire, attempt to understand them and remove the mystery that usually leads to attempts to destroy them.
"Magic" simply means, I lack enough information to understand. And gaining that information is never a negative even when the information we're lacking has more to do with our own behaviors and choices than with the behaviors of others.
Is magic really magic, or is it an illusion..I think we need to establish that first before we try to figure it out..
I believe magic is simply energy, and one who uses magic has simply become better practised at bendign said energy to their own will. It is not created, nor is it lost, because it's entirely impossible to create something out of nothing.
I find the source of the energy to be a fascinating topic. Bare in mind, humans only use something like 10% of their brain power. The energy we use in "magic" could easily be the unused energies from within us, as usually we don't use anywhere near the entire store of our resources. This doesn't contradict the idea that the energy we use comes from the eart, far from it. We are as much a part of the earth as anything else.
Magic is the use of the natural forces within, mostly untapped in many of us.
There are also places where this resource can be tapped more readily than other, hence lay-lines, Thors Rock in West Kirby, the Henge etc..
Are there any confirmed instances of the implementation of magic?
i think magic is able to put someone in subconcious mind and making believe people what you want them to believe.
