Scientists predict that in the next twenty years, they will have figured out how to keep us alive and young for 150-200 years. What will this longer life span mean for vampires? Will they become obsolete as we enjoy our own extended long lives? They are slowly being undermined as sexual creatures as more an more people live out their fantasies in a less strict society. Will we ever see a day when humans don't need a vampire?

I don't believe science will ever be able to explain everything...and as long as some of the mystery remains..so does the facination with creatures such as vampires. It is about more than a long lifespan.

She's right, even though vamps don't like the idead much, that vamps sang or psy,indeed..need humans.Humans don't really need vamps.
Science shure likes to tell things that are unknowen yet.
like weather forcasters..they like to think with there
fancy equiptment they think that they know whats going
to be in the future.I was reading someplace..that they said
in 2 thousand years from now...humans will be only ONE
sex.and that is female.cause the male cromisone is shrinking,
soon females will reproduce on there own.
(sorry about the spelling).

Scientists can not find a cure for aids so how are they going to keep people alive longer if they can not keep people alive now, and even if scientists could keep a person living 150 to 200 years old how is that going to affect a vampire?...

Interesting thread. It should be brought then to question, What would that cost, how would it effect things such as schools of magick, if people are allowed to live longer, and then gain more in their studies and discipline. Heh, funny side note. Oh well I look forward to seeing how this will all turn out in the end.

Since the myth of the vampire has evolved as society and customs have changed, over vast centuries in fact, I cannot see the image completely disappearing from our minds. There is always something out there that humans see as darkly unatainable. The image of the vampire just seems to fill that role.

With projects like the Human Genome and so forth, soon the world will change. Soom mothers and fathers will pick what sex, what eye color, height and IQ. It will start as a way of improving life, taking away genetic disease and so forth, but after time parents will change their offspring, why not manipulate a gene and have fur? Manipulate another gene sequence and oMG vampire tendencie, see what will start off as simple will become complex until there is a world of extreme difference. It is possible to see a world where being human is at the bottom of the food chain.

I believe that vampires will change in the future, but it is natural for everything to change. Everything will at some point evolve or be altered in some way, shape or form.

We've already seen the vampire go from an evil creature bent on killing people for blood to today's vampire which is more fashion statement and lifestyle than evil foe. So it is logical to presume a further evolving is to take place.

Mainly this is due to society learning about a myth then understanding it and finally accepting it.

Everything must change, adapt or evolve or it will whither and die.

Sadly many people fear change to the point they will do anything to keep things the same. In the end their attempts become futile as change will force them to make an abrupt change and then it hurts those resisting even more. ;)

i would have to agree with some of your statements...but when some of you say that vampires need humans than they do us...i would have to boldly disagree...

i mean come on...we are the inner selfs of sexuality we give thrill to everyday life...everyone knows about vampires even if their information is fake, but they still know of us...We give them reasons to make movies...we are entertainment to them...as using as it sounds but its true...

plus we were all once human (unless born from a vampire)....

and we do need humans to feed, but there are other things to feed from...

Scientice have never done fully what they have ever said....There are so many different thing to learn about i think longer life would be discovered only by us...

after all look at us...we are the undead, but the only ones with longer life...(well other life forms like us)

p.s just my opinion though..

Sciencetisit claim all sorts of crap. I agree they can explain everything. I'd prefere a cure for cancer and AIDs to living longer. As well, even if we live longer, the world will always need the myths and legend to amuse them. Many people don't believe in real Vampires.

I beleve humans need vampires just as much as vampires need humans. But, vampires well continue doing the same thing as in the past by continuing to adjust to the world as it evolves. And as for race or culture vampires are more of a culture but no need to get into explaining that.

This world needs vampires to explain thing that cultures can not, in this reguard they will last forever. If the human race was to live 150 yrs. this world would be over run with old people, not to mention it would screw up our political system. If Strom Thurman was still alive and able to run for president, where would we draw the line. Would we have age restrictions on lifes little pleasures? When do we as a world draw the line on human development and or mutation? I wouldn't want to live till 150. My life has had enough tragidy as it is. Why suffer any longer.

I do not really think that scientists will find a way to increase our life span, I am not saying that it is impossible, I am just saying that it is just unlikely. As for the vampire, I think there will always be a place for it in society, people will always speak of the creatures of the night.

I agree Fatal. The vampire will most likely fall back into the role of a deity again. We can already see this happening in our disenchanted and faithless society. People, unhappy with their choices of religion, which can't seem to keep up with science and society, are making their own religion, which sometimes involves old style pagan rituals and sharing blood as a way to bond members together. Vampires will survive, because, after all, they are immortal."My Opinion"

Science will never be able to take away everything people believe in. Vampires are one of those things. I'll keep my opinion out of here and be optimistic. IF vampires do exist then there will be absolutly no way science will be able to discredit them. IF they do not exist then science won't be able to take the belief away from people. It's like trying to take God out of everyones mind. It's so hard to do, it wouldn't be worth the time once you got it done. I'm not saying everyone believes in God I'm just saying everyone has a belief and it's hardpressed for science to ever stop everyones belief. That's just my take on it.

As I said to GreviousDemon,

Everyone seemed to take it literally, as in the 'feeding' way of needing.

The idea I thought you were aiming for, was that the primary aspects of the vampire being immortality and sexuality, would be less relevant to people who live longer and have more opportunity to experience their desires.

Thus the concept would give way to other, more outrageous ideas, probably cyber-freaks or some other powerful identity with which to subsume the vampire.

Perhaps, we will be able to expand that beyond 200 years with application of psionic, and metaphysical principals. Seeking to keep energetic presences corporeal longer and longer, Vampirism, is always a way to gain power one could not gain for themselves.

At present the maximun natural lifespan is 120yrs those who live longer just drank the right type of gin lol.
The emerging goal for science is to bring the ave life expectancy to aroung 100 and have maximims pushing 200ish.

As for vampires I dont think "humans" ever needed them however Im not sure the whole extended life thing is that relevant to the Vampire as pertaining to people.

I dont think so. We exist because we will be needed to prepare the path for the future. Everything exists for a reason. Even extinct animals have paved our own paths! Say, dinosaurs for instance. Since they existed, we're trying to figure out why and how, and in the process a few things are accomplished. We find other creatures, and we become more technologically advanced.

So, vampires and humans, I do believe can co-exist in the future, even if we can someday live to be 200 years old. Beause one depends on the other, you see. Even if it doesn't seem like it.

Vampires have evolved as successfully as humans have. After the fall of the Roman Empire the domination of Islam and Christianity over the previously pagan world should have marked the end of bloody rituals and dark gods. But superstitions, most of them originating from pagan beliefs, and a Church's crafty use of demons and vampires as conversion tools evolved the vampire into the walking corpse, a step closer to humanity. With the loss of control by the Church, education increasing and the industrial and scientific revolution, the vampire again faced extinction. But with the sexual repression of the Victorian Era in full swing, the vampire fell into its new role easily. Now, with a new step in human evolution approaching, the vampire will have to again adapt...This is my meaning as in "need".

After looking over this thread I have to say this is a very deep subject.... there are many ways to answer or theorize what will happen but I will post my response anyway..... I know vampires will adapt again.... everything does if given the chance, and just because humans may have a longer life span in the future doesn't mean they will no longer need vampires....

I think we would need to look at this from two different standpoints.

One, the fictional/mythological vampire is just that: fiction and/or myth - it will be around as long as we write about it, talk about it, dream about it, whatever. How long that type of vampire survives definitely depends on us, as humans, to keep it around.

Two, from the standpoint of someone affected by vampirism. I AM human. There is no seperation to say that other humans need me, specifically. Not being a solitary creature, I do enjoy other humans being around, and frankly, feel that I need it. I need the companionship, the energy, and most of all, I need the people producing everything else I require (job, government, clothing, food, entertainment, etc...)

"Humans"?

We -are- humans. If the rest of the human race dies out, is the biggest problem we have really going to be whether anyone gives two shits on our subculture? Probably not for most of us...

No matter how long our span of life, we will always need fantasy.

How else to overcome the hum drum most of us find ourselves in.

Fantasy, is the one thing that helps us to cope, and it doesn't cost money lol

Need...
Some mysteries science will never solve.
Longer life spans for humans means little more than at 100 you will have a mid life crisis.
and more restricted age limits.

Carvall,

What I believe the gist of this thread is intended as, is that vampires will no longer hold the same sway in fantasy in the long-lived future of humanity.

To be replaced with another, more exotic archetype..
