I watched something on the discovery channel not to long ago and found it interesting. i would like to see what people think.

The Bo were an anceint culture in China and coffins have been found on a tall cliff and it has not yet been decided on how they were put there.

From far off, they saw a cliff some 600 meters long and rising 120 meters. Nearly 100 coffins hung on the cliff side supported on wooden stakes wedged into the rock. Other coffins rested on rock outcrops. The sight aroused heated discussion among the experts.

Why did the ancient people bury the dead in hanging coffins?

According to historical records, the Bo people believed "Coffins set high are considered auspicious. The higher they are the more propitious for the dead". Also, after experiencing years of wars and natural disasters, the Bo people dreamed of going somewhere peaceful and quiet after their death. That is why they chose to rest their bodies on the precipices with the mountains and rivers around, all peaceful, beautiful and quiet. The Guyue people, on the other hand, held a high esteem for high mountains, and believed the higher the hanging coffin was placed; the better they could be protected.

How did the ancient people do it?

So how did the ancient people, including the Bo people and Guyue people, do it? This question once caused heated discussion among experts . Some believe the coffins were lowered down with ropes from the top of the mountain. Some ought the coffins were put in place with wooden stakes inserted into the cliff surface as artificial climbing aids. Others feel that earth ramps were the answer.

Cui Chen, a curator of the Yibin Museum, who examined the three different ways the coffins of the Bo people could have been put in place, has this to say:

"Earth ramps might have been used but experts discount this solution due to the amount of labor required, which would have been difficult in an underpopulated area. A timber scaffold supported on stakes in the cliff might have offered a plausible explanation but years of investigation have failed to find even a single stake hole. On balance the third option of lowering the coffins on ropes from above had always seemed feasible and now cultural specialists have found the telltale marks of the ropes which were used all these years ago. And so this part of the mystery of the hanging coffins has now been resolved."
During the later years of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the imperial army cruelly oppressed the ethnic minority peoples of Southwestern China Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces. In particular, the Duzhangman and Bo Peoples fell victims of massacre. To escape their oppression, the Bo migrated to new locations. They hid their real names and assimilated with other ethnic groups. Like their culture they have disappeared but their descendents are still here for they are a part of us.
How the Guyue people hung the coffins onto the Fairy-water Rocks of Longhushan (Dragon Tiger Mountain) remains a mystery, since the hanging coffins are so dangerously located. Over the years, it has taken on a mystic air. Some people say the coffins were hung up with the aid from the immortals in the heaven, while others say there are invaluable treasures within the caves. Longhushan Administration Bureau once offered a 300,000 yuan ($US 36298) reward for solving the mystery, but so far no one has won the reward.

There was an ancient culture that preceded the Incas in Peru that placed their dead in high cliff walls. I find it fascinating! I believe like the Bo, there was a deeper meaning than we may ever know.

ropes and from above is an easy way to guess on this

all the way on the top and simply slide things down sort of like how window cleaners clean glasses from 34 stories or 50 stories in the air

thats my guess

How would they get the poles into the earth at that height and wouldn't they have to climb the mountain to get the ropes to use?
I'm not arguing with anyones ideas just trying to give more of an idea or question.

maybe they had a large group climb up and basically lowered the ropes with plat forms so people on the ropes coul bang those holders in

and then pulled them up took a break and lowered the coffins im not sure its like how did the pyramids get created or perhaps did atlantis exist

Yes I agree with "FLCB" that this may have been there positions in the afterlife. It may have also been easier to hang the coffins then to bury them.

Definately cool to see it but im working on the idea that every cliff has a route other than climbing to get to the top of it, in other words they must have went up an earth ramp and did it by rope. religious belief can give some people a really strong drive to do something thats dificult.

Trying to figure out how th coffins were plaaced there, would be trying to figure out how the ancient eygyptians built the pyrimids.

I suppose u would need to experiment and try different technique's.

This is a fasinating subject, thaks for posting it:)

Maybe there was something else in their culture that was against putting death into the ground.
Could also have something to do with status.

Maybe the people put their dead on the side of that cliff, so that animals could not get to them, i know their are more easy ways to protect their dead from animals, but maybe that was their way, thats my opinion...

Mysteries Revealed

The hanging coffins were once a hot topic among architects, paleoanthropologists, folklorists and artists. In the Spring of 1941, experts on antiquities including Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, Liu Dunzhen and Chen Mingda arrived at Sumawan, which is today part of Gongxian County.

From far off, they saw a cliff some 600 meters long and rising 120 meters. Nearly 100 coffins hung on the cliff side supported on wooden stakes wedged into the rock. Other coffins rested on rock outcrops. The sight aroused heated discussion among the experts.

Some believed the coffins must have been lowered down with ropes from the top of the mountain. Some thought the coffins had been put in place using wooden stakes inserted into the cliff face to be used as artificial climbing aids. Others felt that scaling ladders were the answer. Lin said they could leave the mystery for later generations to solve.

Why did the Bo people bury their dead so high? Li Jing writing during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) offers a clue in his Brief Chronicles of Yunnan. "Coffins set high are considered auspicious. The higher they are the more propitious for the dead. And those whose coffins fell to the ground sooner were considered to be more fortunate."

Cui Chen who is Curator of the Yibin Museum examines three different ways the coffins could have been put in place. "Earth ramps might have been used but experts discount this solution due to the extent of the labor required, which would have been difficult in an under-populated area.

During the later years of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial army cruelly oppressed the ethnic minority peoples of Sichuan and Yunnan. In particular, the Duzhangman and Bo Peoples fell, victims of massacre. To escape their oppression, the Bo migrated to new locations. They hid their real names and integrated into other ethnic groups. Like their culture they have disappeared but their descendents are still here for they are a part of us.

No animals or worms to destroy the remains maybe. It looks in the pictures like they had plenty of holes in the walls to insert the climbing sticks whenever they needed them. Ancient peoples were logical and practical.

Hrmm...
I don't think that chinese population was a factor in the time of the Bo people.
I don't beleive that is was concern for the animal life either.

More likely as not , it was based upon a lost belief system.

I think the people worked the holes from platforms suspended from ropes. ala window washers as someone else stated.
That being the case the same platform could probably be used to place the coffins there as well.

Death and custom has always been an absorbing cultural enterprise.

someone in the tribe was assigned the task, or took it upon himself, to cut the holes in advance. Wood was prepared to exact dimensions as well.

What we tend to forget is how time differed for the ancients. They had bountiful time to spend in such pursuits.

If their basic needs for food and shelter were in place, and if there were no wars, then the architect of this design probably rallied many young men to the fore for his heavenly morgue.

They gladly swung from the heights, defying the wind, a cirque de soleil of swinging ropes and balanced platforms.

I'd like to know if the dead were buried with anything special?

Wonder if National Geographic has covered this?
