OK i have wondered when you start to collect your supplies for spells , potions, or cleanings so on and so forth
what is the method you prefer to use
- buy them from online and stores
- go out in to nature and find what you need and grow your own
with what ever method you use can you explain
for me
i have to buy what i need because i live in a city and am unable to grow what i need and wish to have, sometimes if i need swamp water i can go to a park and get it,
when i lived in the country i was able to grow what i needed and find what i needed, i find growing my own my spells were strong because i gave my own energy to what i was doing
Personally, I am just starting to experiment so I am using every source I can get. I do live in the country so have easy access to the wilderness but need to do more research before I make that endeavor. On the other side of the coin I live in a small town and we have no such shops where I can purchase said items so right now the internet has been my main source and I shop and compare.
I go out & buy them. When buying I try to use products that are natural. Things tend to die when I try to grow them, if they would survive, I would go with growing my own supplies.
I buy from stores haven't yet bought online I am wanting to start growing some of my herbs pretty soon and see how that goes and I like to go out in nature and get my supplies too some things are just harder to get than others and thats why I buy them but everyone has there preference
It really depends on what you're talking about. You can't go out into nature and collect glass jars to store things in.
Sometimes if you live in the city it is hard to get ahold of certain items and so ordering them is your only option.
I would much prefer to check around in the area and look for a store that carries the things I need instead of ordering them online. It's better to see and examine something in person before purchasing it.
for the actuall casting of spells, u need to buy stuff because almost every spell requires candels and u are not going to make ur own candle unless u hav a lot of time to kill
I buy, online and a few shops local, depending on what I need, but cannot grow my own herbs as I live in the city
Again as many stated, it depends on what it is. Most things I can either grow or trade for living in the middle of nowhere. Some things like candles and jars I buy, but that doesn't mean you can't decorate to give your own energy
well I buy some stuff like incense, candles etc things of such nature, and I grow everything else and even collect water off of my property from outside.
To me the magic / spell is stronger if you yourself have nurtured the things that you need most in the spell ... I guess you could say feeds off my energy as well as being fresh when I use it..
I used to work at a Metaphysical shop so I got my stuff there for half price. While I was working there I stocked up pretty good. I do have to go back there every now & then for something.
for people in the city, you can use pots to raise your own items. you can even get things in miniture versions. I have had a huge patio pot garden at one time with everything from some cooking herbs to an orange tree.
I like to grow my own but it depends what you need and when you need it.
I love to grow my own but I live in an apartment so I order online or make trips to the Village in NY for other items. Most stuff can be purchased on line
true, but some rituals spells whatever do require you to cut certain ingreds at particular times. most stores dont do this unless you find one of those really great ones. at least in pots you can cut and dry things at the right time and store them for later dates.
I prefer to find my own but there are certain things it is just easier buy. If I an find stones on my own then I do...but I have bought quite afew that I could never find in my area. As far as plants and herbs go I plant my own and use those. I think fresh is better and if you grow them on your own you have put more of yourself into those plants...and I just find that it works better for me that way.
I used to buy. It is hard to get around with a broken down vehicle. heh. For now, I just use nature. Not a whole lot of it. Only some or very little.
i used to go out in nature and collect my own assortment of herbs and such now that iam ill i go to a place known as the talking tree a store in a very small town that most people have tried to savatage by setting fire to it and throwing rocks thru the owners windows because of what she sells
I prefer to collect my own, I find it puts a bit of your energy into things.
I have an affinity for growing things, so I try to grow what I need. I am fairly new at it all but I have started an herb garden in pots on my terrace. I live on the 3rd floor of my building and have 3 balcony's so I have pots on all of them with herbs I felt the desire to grow.
I also order online what I can not grow. I have not been able to find a metaphysical shop in my city as of yet but am looking forward to finding one.
I grow my own herbs for the exception of some. I make my own candles. I make my own bath salts. My caldron and things for my altar has been brought of course. I have a minature altar I bought on line...that can travel with me.
Isnt it beg borrow and steal. Joke I would think that you would get what you can where you can
Do what feels right. If you feel the need to go to nature for something...then do it!!!
What ever it takes to complete the mission. Better to buy than just leave out completly.
we have a whole bunch of componet stores around so i use those... and there a good couple of coven ordained magic shops too so i use those...
if i had more resources i would get help from the land around me.. but i am in the very little natured suburbs.. so i make due with what i can
I prefer to buy tools that I need in the proverbial brick and mortar shop. However some items seem to work better when they're found objects. Such as a wand, or an Athame, or pentacle, etc. I feel that when they come to you, there is more of a connection to that object. There is better energy flow.
I would think the objects you go out and find yourself would be more "pure" and not have the energries of others.
I do both, I buy online lots of stuff I also go to Montrela and buy some at the boutique there I found and I grow some on my balcony, mainly my herbs since my balcony is both towards the moon at night and the sun at day so I get both lights. If I want to grow something in darkness, as I got 2 herbs I do that with,I gorw them inside, they only get lights sometimes during day when I turn my lights on.
I wouldn't have a clue what some of the ingredients of spells would look like, so to avoid any confusion and time I would be off to the supermarket. :)
i buy somethings but mostly find things or make them myself ----- i like that personal touch .
I guess i like to collect. When I go to collect the things i need it gives me freedom.
I am not sure about the guidlines for this type of thing, but would people mind posting a few of the online links or messaging me them. It is really hard to find good stores.
i prefer to collect my supplies as much as possible that way i can give thanks for the blessings directly when you buy online you run a risk of not always getting the proper items
What sort of things would you collect? like roots, bark, eye of a rook etc., that sort of thing?
I have a supplier on the historical re-enactment circuit
i do both purchase from the stores as well as grow items needed
marajade some ingredients can be but it depends on where you get them from also if you can get most your stuff from nature it is better off and more apealing to the usage
I grow about 80% of the things I need, buying for the online store is ok, but hand made things work better then anything else.
I also do grow my own stuff yet the traveling alter that Mysticwinds mentioned may be worth buying ... Humm. very interesting idea... :)
Yet your own energy and powers are stronger as was said to make or grow your own stuff / supplies...
I would do both ways, I would shop online or at the stores.
I have seen that making your own things, like alter and sword and other things by hand, help Allot. The more you put your self in to the things you use the easier it will be, and more powerful " " The spell will be.
The herbs that grow wild in my country, I will collect myself at the time when it is most benificial. The herbs I cannot find growing wild, I will grow myself. I will have to buy the seeds online and have them registred an checked before I can plant them.
The reason I like collecting and growing my own herbs is that I have done some work to obtain them, I came to their hidingplace and asked if I could collect, they were not mailordered by me.
Another thing is; that to get the most power out of your herbs, they must be picked at a certain time, whether it is a special day or a phase of the moon it is much easier to adapt your collecting into your own daily schedule.
Note; I am a practicing wiccan and just because my methods works for me, does not mean it is the only correct way, it is individual how to do it.
Before it closed, used to go to a fantastic little shop full of just about everything needed. Also, friends and I would go gather fresh from nature, and now it's online or a long drive to a store.
Living in rural Louisiana, I collect from nature as much as possible. I am fortunate to live in an area that has both the swamp and forest environments very nearby so I have access to many native plants. :) I prefer to use collected plants as they seem to work better in spellwork as they have not picked up unwanted energies. I go online when time does not permit or I cannot find the item be it plant, candle, or other supply in nature. :)

I would have to say I do a bit of both, I grow many herbs in my garden and from time to time make my own incense sticks. But there is much I don't know how to do so I will buy online or in stores.
Collecting, harvesting, and growing your own stuff should defintely be a goal. The extra care and energy should manifest in the materials.
I prefer to collect my materials from nature. It feels more sacred that way.
I am practitioner of both nature and death magic. It alows me to go peacefuly to the nature and gather all I need from there on.
The death magic requires somewhat more unnatural resources, so I have no problems in hooking up with the morgue security guard and getting what I might need from there on.
Magic is a very exciting thing.
well with my surplies, i buy a lot of things, but if i have a chance i will either grow my own or go out in nature and find what i need
I do both, some of the stuff I can't get from out side my front door and so I go out and buy what I need.Yet some stuff I can not find in the shops but can get butt loads from my backgarden when ever I need too. =)
I like to scourge Good Will stores (second-hand items) and then customize by going to craft stores and getting things there.
Every now and then I will actually make my altar items.
I also will see things, anywhere and everywhere, that would be amazing on the altar. My eyes are always open :D
Items found in nature are pure and uncorupted by human hands, I would think if you have the ability to gather your own goods from nature it is always the best route to take.
Thanks Darian69, I was just wondering if it would be an expensive pastime or not. I could think of a few spells I would like to conjure up, so I must be off to look for the recipes! Is there any particular place you could recommend where I could find them?
While I would love to collect them, which to me would make everything more personal...it is much easier for me to shop online or buy my things from stores.
I go out and buy the things I need, I found a really good place to shop in Dundee, MI called Mother Earth's Stone Castle. It's quite aways away from me so when I go there I buy alot. It's a nice shop and carries everything one needs.
_Generally, due to lack of time and or patience, I don't do anything with spells and what not, however, when it comes to supplies, when I do do them, I collect things. Buying stuff from the store is, how shall I put this, hazardous? to the continuity and strength of the spell. You want to use items that have a portion of your own spirit in them, and so, when you use things you collected or things you grow, it works better than things you buy from a place where other people have touched it._
I think buying is the only way. Although collecting would be better it is a matter of time and where you can go to collect the things you need or want.
I have to say I do a bit of both. I like to grow my own herbs and make my own incense as well. I try to make some of the items I need for my alter and work, such as home made bowl as a cauldron. Make my own candles etc.
Sometimes it is hard grow a particular herb so I may have to buy it instead. I do buy crystals and that sort of thing.
A bit of both actually and they all have worked fine for me. I also like to hand make what items I can for my altar. It's a real thrill when I do find something in nature for use but often difficult so I will buy it and just cleanse it before use.
collecting .. or preparing them by yourself I thing is the best ideea since the spells must me a precise thing... and you don't need other's energy in your spell:)
I'm for collecting...
i buy a lot of my candles and oils from bath and body works ;-P
and a lot of insence you can find at spencers.
you can actually find a lot of wiccan shit from the mall.
but a really good site for hoodoo and stuff is
luckymojo.com
they have really good spells and a lot of inventory.
I just let things come to me and keep them for a time that i might have to use them ^^
It's best to collect from nature. You can never be too sure of what you may be buying.
That is just a really great question especially for some one that is new. (Not saying you are , but ya for others)
I myself recycle as many thing as I can, so that is where i get my jars. Candles I recycle too. When they have burened out down to the wick and there is still lots of wax left, I have save it.
As for Stones I have found some in nature yes and have even gone mining for some. But if there are certain ones I need, I have several friends that own shops that I wil go to.
Now as for herbs/flowers/plants ect ect ect...
I have a huge garden.... and I grow as much of my own that I can. But somethings yes of course i will have to go to a the shop for. but with the joy of growing my own things just adds to the energy of it for me . Plus the fact that i can then make my own oils and inscences.
I have a great many books on plants and flowers , so when I do go hiking I always have my journal and with me.
I personally have actually done some of each. Gemstones for example. Most people can't go out in to their local woods and find crystals and such, or volcanic rock. So those you would buy. Other things you can grow, if you know how to and have the time to care for them. It basically comes down to the energy that attracts...if you are attracted to a particular item, then I feel you should buy it if you have the money, or collect it if you find it in nature.
i just buy my stuff its quickker and easier. the only hard pard about it is waitin for them to get there
I too prefer to find in nature what I need but I also find recycling suits my magical needs very well too. I will buy when I cannot obtain locally but I always magically cleanse anything bought or recycled before using in ritual or spellwork.
i buy herbs and oils and tools, and cleanse them before use.
I buy my supplies, but it is my desire, when i buy a house in two more years, to have an herb garden so that i might use the herbs for rituals.
i buy online cause the one store that sells stuff like that really doze not have much
The problem with finding all of your supplies in nature is that some objects are man made. The rocks, crystals, and plants available really are dependent on where you live. Even the herbs are not year round products. Most people I imagine have to use a combination of both local and purchasing through new age stores online or in their community to enhance their supplies.
I do a little of both. I purchase my gemstones from the local new age stores, but I also like to collect stones found outdoors. As far as candles, I have made my own in the past, and I have a friend who makes them for me. I've also made my own ritual supplies, like wands, but I've purchased them too. My athame was purchased online from a previous owner. The energy of the blade was great. With herbs that I need, I either buy them dry, or I get them from a friend's garden.
A little of both actually I collect as well as buy....it does not matter to me which method I use only a few spells call for things that can only be collected....
I like to buy them from trusty stores; what I can find in nature, I collect myself... it gives me a feeling of a greater power knowing to prepare my own stuff... What I can't find around I have to buy...
i perfer to order online because i only put what i can spend in my paypal......
however as for most of the time, it is at a local shop if i find what i am looking for....this town doesn't have shit
i don't collect... i had a roommate who did.. pissed me off
I buy as i need my supplies. I dont stock up or collect.. I get it all in one bang..
just going to the store for your supplies is a lot esyer then collecting them.
but then again collecting them or growing them yourself can be cheaper then buying lol.
If I was going to do magic i would go and buy what I needed
right now i am buying tll i have time to start growing my things like i did before
I collect left overs from other ppl who have used them for magic
I can go into nature and collect containers and potions that way, it's cheaper and more creative in my oppinion. Plus, I love nature so I connect with that in my search, giving it more meaning.
going out in nature nd finding what you need...It's more to sticking with tradition of the old ways....although if your in a big city area buying is probably your better bet.
When I use to believe in that stuff I found it more enjoyable going out in nature or making it myself. Also most are willing to trade off surplus items.
