if music symbolizes something, why do some songs seem to have no meaning?or am i just too closed minded?
everything has meaning to somebody even if you think its meaningless... it's like that saying, one mans trash is anothers treasure...
I don't think all songs make since to us because we are not in the artists state of mind. That is what makes us listen hoard music is ones that is easy to understand what they are meaning..
I think I'm babbling.. I'll shut up until I think about this more... *walks away*
You also have to take into account that some bands are simply formed to make money, not music, and bands like that are poison to the industry. Cough Cough ashley simpson.
I agree with Daire here
I love music and praise talented musicians ..so i get cross when i hear the utter rubbish spewed forth by the music industry simply to make money from teenagers
I definatley agree with Daire here. But I think the record labels have a lot to do with it in some cases. I've seen record labels destroy some very talented artists.
Laugh all you want at this one, but Vanilla Ice is an example of that.
Each person on this planet has its own tastes and it is so with the music. Everyone likes something else, what make him happy ....makes a sence for him...Therefore everything has a meaning ...If not for u than for someone else evethough it is sometimes hard for us to except it.
I too agree with Daire ... prime example of several of these bands are uhm to name several ..
Menudo, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, Tiffany .... you could go on and on, back generations since recorded music began ..
Thera makes a good point as well, since no two people are exactly alike, they aren't going to get the same meaning from the song/musican as the next person would
music only tends to mean something if you can connect with it in some way ..... its subjective.... just like art :) bring ur own meaning to it :)
I think that music is a type of expressing yourself. Like if you are into Cradle of Filth etc, you are a kind of darkish minded person (Kinda I guess) but if you like HIM maybe your into romance? I find it easy to connect with music, although others may not. Some people can't live with it, some people can't live without it!!
I kinda disagree with you pertending, I love COF, and AX7, Cruxshadows and many other "goth" bands, but I alos like bands like GC, and Simple Plan, Social D, Rancid, to Metallica, Motley Crue, even some dance and hip hop .. I think it's too general to try to say a person is thus because they like a certain type of music ... that's like putting a lable on them or judging them
all songs have meaning- one way or another- it can be any meaning- meaning of love, of pain, or suffering- it just depends how a person looks at it
Music is passion, to expresess a certain part of yourself that you could not otherwise express, for me it is a world of imagination and relaxation and self expression... i listen and then i close my eyes and think.. it is how i listen to music mainly... so i do beleive that music and most other things in life have a meaning altho its not always obvious... thats what i beleive.
Music is LOVE and passion, and maby the text in a song means nothing to you, but for the one who wrote it, it may mean alot, and it may stand for things she/he feels n so on....
Every song has some sort of meaning....Sometimes it's easily seen, other times you have to look deeper.
Even more times you can't find it at all because the meaning is known only to the artist or people of a like mind.
Octavia "One mans trash is another mans treasure."
I totally agree, it all depends on the person, and what the music means to them. You can hate a song and still find that it envokes particular memories and ends up inadvertantly 'meaning' something to you.
Take for example, theres a Blink 182 song, I cant remember what its called, and i dont really like the band. However, this song (during the period of which i was going out with a guy called Damian) follwed the two of us everytime we went to pubs, cafe's or clubs. Although I dont like the song, it means something to me now. I cannot be parted from my Manson, my sister cannot be parted from Girls Aloud... it totally depends on who you are.
I agree with Daire that a band can be purely about the commercialism, and these 'trends' of bands such as Keane, Rooster and The Killers taking advantage of the 'return of rock' into mainstream culture trends and making it easily accessible to those prepared to part with their cash is shallow, and ruins the industry. However there may not be much industry left if some bands didn't try to be millionaires.
Like HellChildDami, I have a very wide spectrum of musical tastes. I adore bands such as Black Sabbath, The Icarus Line, Scarlett Soho etc but also, from my acting environment, love musicals such as 'Rent' and 'JCS' because they also mean a lot to me.
I think music is adapted by the person for the emotional state they are in at the time, and for people who require different things from it. I prefer music which builds an atmosphere, and obviously has somehting of the writer in it, then a manufactured band with shallow lyrics, but I know that lyrics which I see as shallow, as I shake my head at bands that dont actually play any instruments, can mean something to others. You have to take your hat off to their entrepeneurial skills.
Dont know if that helps you with the question.
Why thankyou Octavia. Sorry, Ive been going into 'lets write a novel' mode on the forum lately...
I agree with you too Echo. And I don't mind your long posts because at least you use them to get a valid point across and they aren't just rambling.
good point some music today dont have a point are message behind it record lables are putting together so many groups just to make money alot of the groups are made just to go with with the current trend not to point fingers but (good charlotte to name a few) sorry if i offended any body with that statement (syke really doesnt matter its my opion though rite)
some music has no meaning, or is really dumb, because many groups are about money, and not what they should be about...music! That's why i like local bands they're all about the music and fans!-- (216)--
i think that eveything has a meaning if it is writen right i think music is a form of a poem and some poems have no meaing becuase they are nto writen in the right form
True, even if a song doesn't mean anything to you, it could mean the world to someone else.
It's the same with poetry, one poem could seem like it was the deepest poem and reached in and touched your heart, whereas another person would just blow past it because it didn't stike them.
I'd like it if all songs had meaning but I'm afraid I can't agree some daft rave tune written for generation E with all it's sterile happy in the trees with the birds rubbish is not meaninful it's hollow so is alot of pop music which I can't say I've even heard in the past few years it sucks the life out of me!!
there are alot of bands out there whos songs have meaning. there just hard to find lately, Alot of bands that we tend to see now are in it for the money and i think that those bands have forgotten the true meaning of music.
I can't see the meaning in some songs that some of my friends can. But as was said, some bands today are put together solely for their commercial value - so their songs probably have little or no meaning to them.
I am infulced by alot of different kinds of music it depends on how I feel on what I listen to..
I agree with what people have said I mean I may not like some types of music but I listen to them and there are songs that just completey annoy me because I listen to them for a long time trying to see a meaning but never do and there are songs that I listen to once and find a meaning to it
It helps if you play the record backwards, then you can hear the 'message' the way it was ment to be.... *evil grins*
heheh I think that pretty much never happens any more.
I do think a lot of songs don't have any meaning to them any more besides a desperate attempt to put oneself on the map and make some money. But to some people it does have meaning...hmmm. Like mainstream things, and music. It's called a stream because it's shallow.
Ugh.
i think that allot of the main streem music has lot its meaning in lew of trying to produce a sound that will smash up the charts and lyrics that the main streem think that they can relate to step off the path and u can find some music with meaning
It all depends on the song, you and the mood your in when ur listening to it. to one person a song with no words can have a very deep meaning but to someone else it could just be music with no words. Same with a song with word. the meaning or lack of one depends on the person who is listening to it.
i think i've found a hole in the market.. gonna get started on some 'rewind' records straight away.. just need some sexy vampire's for the video shoot... *grins*
i like alternative music more than todays pop crap. i've noticed all today's chart music tends to be the same. about breaking up, love, and money. alternative music tends to be a more braod spectrum of topics within the lyrics and it has a lot more thought put into it.
Example:
I ripped my hair out with my brush the other day
now i see their nasty stares
and i want to look away
no meaning to it, i should know, i just made it up. :-) but it makes money and that's all people care about. i think as soon as money and contracts come into it, music loses a bit of it's freedom and the freedom to express it, is what makes it beautiful.
music classical, rock or even shitty rap. those composers most of them, play whats on their mind. am i right?
i think those crappy music is an outlet to disturbed feelings of the composer or to simply to be unique and their music known worldwide sell albums with unreasonable songs to make bucks.
Love music... yeah listen to them everyday rather than my mom nagging... lock myself to my room and listen to it all day. nevermind eating or other needs the music fills me with it. yeah sort of getting drunk or addicted to music.
fave songs to play when i'm angry or furious to my limit rock. Voice out my thoughts and shouts it. nice songs of linkin park, pod, korn, evanescence and other cool rock bands. classical, well down the memory lane I go.
You should do it sometime really relaxing and intoxicating. Music always quells my thrist for everything.
I personally think that every song has a meaning, of course some only do it for the money of that I think that isn't worth being called music... songs is more about the lyrics and the sohpiticated meaning of them..
::goes and plays britney spears backwarts to hear if it contents demonic messages HAIL SATAN:: lol hahaha
~AmaliA~
forgive my awfull spelling ::blushes::
There are still quite a few groups that have backwards messages in their music
(All you Juggalos and Juggalettes out there know most of the ones I'm talking about)
i agree with daire, and yeah u have to be on the same level as the artist to understand whats going on so if ur not on that same level of course ur not going to understand what the songs about so of course ur going to reject it cause pple tend to reject that wich they dont understand
I think that everything has a meaning. Some may find the meaning some may not.
meanings what you make of them really
its your oppinion of it
no1 can be sure about it
but everything has a meaning to it in some way
I think they all have meaning. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. That doesn't mean you're close-minded though. ^.^
Everything has it's meaning..
Even those Backstreets, Spears and such, And their message sounds 'We're doing this for cash, so buy our new record, it's brain washing anyway, so you would love it sooner or later and it's on MtV so it's 'cool'' crap... and I could not even call that music; they are disease unfortunately without cure...
Just try to listen TooL, for example, Maynard is a lyrics genius.. Figure out his meanings ;)
i love music but i hate some stuff coz theres nothing to their music
I love all kinds of music.......all of it has meaning to someone out there in one way or another.
The music I listen to the most has meaning to me in a lot of different forms.
There are bands out there aside from nin that I've listened to for years cause their music has meaning to me........
i like pointless 'angry' musik like Korn and Slipknot. especially korn's Twist. and the sick stuff like Rammstein (check this and youll see what i mean) i hate it when people have to guess at what the meaning of a song has. especially when it has absolutely no meaning to it whatsoever (system of a down - bounce)
i just realized that this thread followed away from its original question: "if music symbolizes something, why do some songs seem to have no meaning?" to answer the question, some songs are written just for fun. some examples: Korn - Twist, System of a Down - Bounce, Aquabats - Pizza Day, etc. i like to make songs that have absolutely no meaning
i think some music has meaning but i hear some songs and think, wtf??? i listen to an eclectic amount of music, the only music i dont listen to is opra.
All music has some kind of meaning, even if you cant find it. ToiletDuc is completely right in the whole backward messages thing. Juggalos and Juggalettes definately know how those are.
MONEY MONEY MONEY that seems to be what most of the bands today are about most not all so if you think about it they all have somekind of meaning behind them even if it is just money
if the lyrics have no meaning try and see if the actual music does
Music has the meaning you want to give to it.......even those that apparently have no meaning at all
Yes I agree with almost all of you. These days music is more made for money than passion, what a pity!
However even those commercial songs have a meaning. They can mean:another commercial song of this artist so buy it,or if it a party-dance music it can mean: just dance and have fun.
However I prefare songs with good lyrics, but that's just me.
if i could say that the only type of music i remember haveing true meaning was my grandfathers stupid doo woop.
todays music in its own special little way has a meaning that we just can't seem to hear or even feel.
Sometimes the meaning of a song may be nothing more then to appeal to the masses to gain popularity, and as a result, achieve fame and fortune.
There's still meaning there.
Sometimes a song is written and preformed because the artists enjoy what they do.
There's still meaning there.
Sometimes music is written to release or express emotion.
There's always some kind of meaning in any music. Just as there is some kind of meaning in pretty well everything we do.
The best..... doing something for the sheer meaninglessness of it... yet that in itself is still a meaning.
I believe every song has a meaning. it's just that to certain people that meaning may not be top on their list.
i think money make the world turn,so moust of the music makers too. it's sometimes hard to believe like your favorite band becomes an MTV pop icon. and Rock just flow away. sorry for my mistakes, just i think that more and more people in the music industry are just money dolls...
Everyone has their own taste in music. Some songs make sense to only some of us while others may not. But I think you can only understand a song when you understand the artist's point of view about it.
Some artists(most of the young) only sing to make money, I agree with that. They usually start with TV shows and end up singing really badly, but making money. And their music, I believe is not worth listening to...Hilary Duff, Jesse McCartney, Ashlee Simpson, etc.
some songs mean something to someone but not to another person i just depends on who you are and the way you think....
whether or not you get the meaning behind some music is irrelevnt. the fact that there is a message there is important. music is poetry, and poetry is an expression of fellings or moods. the meaning is always there whether or not everyone gets it.
Sometimes I listen to the background music, sometimes i listen to the words. All music has meaning and purpose. It is life. Even the crappiest, happiest sounding bullshit.
~morgana~
nothing is trivial.
I think all music has a message I dont find any music meaningless
i love music it is in my soul.. most music does have a meaning.. most of it does as a matter of fact... atleast to someone.. to me all the music i like to listen to has it (rock) but other stuff i listen to doesnt always.
im sure whatever the song is, it has meaning to the person that wrote it...it might have meaning to others because they dont really know what it was written about
I listen to alot of gothic and heavy metal music.... people have their own opionin about what they listen to in this world no one is the same we are all different no matter what....
having a meaning for someone else isn't gonna stop me from disliking it
Some songs have one meaning for some and another meaning for others. It depends on how you view the music and the lyrics. No two people will hear a song and think of the same thing. That is why we each have our own opinion.
ur right, some songs out there just have no purpose at all, pathetic. and music does symbolize its own meaning, love, death, hate, sex, sadness, some songs have nothing, just blabbin out words
i hate songs tat have no meaning, wasting up time
I agree with xXsexbloodrockXx, some songs are just worthless, there to take up time for no reason, but most songs are there for a reason, i'm sure i could relate something from my life in every last song i have, that's why i keep them.
music makes me feel better.i mean when i listen to dani from cradle of filth i forget about my problems and relax...efect Ville Valo = his music makes me dream
LOL NonMortusEst,I agree, it is also because of their meaning that I dislike it, haha!
I'm sure that a song which repeats the phrase ''suck it'' all the time has some sort of meaning to its Author but What the fuck!
Just because the music has no meaning to you, it doesn't mean that it doesn't have meaning to person who wrote it.
Music in it's very nature is passion. It is human expression in one of it's finest forms. Music has the power to cheer us up, calm us down, work us up, make you want to dance, it makes you want to sleep.
Music can make you angry, or it can make you depressed.
But truly, not many people think of that when they listen to it. And those who do may get a different point of view or a different idea of the meaning than you did. It doesn't make your viewpoint wrong, nor does it make theirs wrong.
A song is like a book, everybody will look at it differently and take it to mean what ever they want it to at the time.
LadyEslaina that's basically what i said, but in shorter words
i think that all music has a meaning to someone but all can not see the meaning in all music
I beleive in some peoples eyes music is mindless drivel, To me it represents my will to escape from the real world and enter myown little noisy, heavy metal world.
that the one reason i listen to country it mean something to me most of the time
