I'm not sure if this question has been asked before but it's something else I've been wondering about for a small while.
Some people say that water is deadly to vampires and if they touch it they will die.
that seems rather corny to me but I'd like to hear other people's opinions.
Also what about religious symbols? such as the cross and such. Do these things really effect a Vampire?
as far as i know vampyres can not cross running water unless they are in the coffin filled with there native soil.
as far as crosses go i have hear that they do affect vampyres only if the person believes in the symbol if not it has no effect.
hmm...I don't know it seems odd. Any particular reasons why they cannot cross running water?
I can understand the theories of the cross since some say that vampires were made in the process of denouncing God.
My only weakness is sunlight, it hurts my eyes, makes me ill, and makes my skin crack...
I don't tan or burn, I get sick...
that i don't know, but if you give me a day or so i will find out for you. it may have something to do with the washing away of sins with water
ooh that is a good thought wow I never even thought about that..
i think i did read that somewhere in a book i was studying
there have been a lot of myths and legends regarding vampires and what not. And I have heard the whole running water and deadly to kindred and what not. But no where have I seen an explanation to this reason.
So what about vampires who don't believe in God? (basically in order to denounce something you admit its existance)
that i don't know. anybody else want to field this one?
well, i can swim but dont like the cross lol
as for the myth i dont know about the running water but holy water and cross have to do with denouncing god as far as i know
I don't like any symbol of religion mostly because at some point in time that religion did something that harmed something or someone. Of course I'm not a vampire.
Like Mykill said, the symbol only effect the ones that believe in it's power. Like in exorcisms, where the rituals are performed by the priest, or rabbi, according to the person's beliefs, or it will have no effect what so ever. Symbols work through the power of suggestion, a lot like a painting: it's not the object that is there, but it's representation.
For sharing an oppinion? Thank you, for bringing up the subject : ) as far as the water superstition...It's the first time I hear that. Had no idea, but the cleanning of the so called "unclen spirit" strykes me as a catholic belief more like the holy water, don't you think?
yes, baptisms occured in water though. But then again someone had to be there to baptise you. I have no idea I've just heard some people say Vampires can't get in water.
i personally wear two symbols
the first is an ankh that my tattoo was designed off of
and the second is a rosary that my grandfather was layed out with. i had a priest tell me that it was wrong to wear it as a piece of jewelry but i wear it to feel closer to him not as a symbol of religion
Crosses can only hurt a vampire if the person belives in the religion. It is faith in the symbol that gives it power. I enjoy wearing crosses...lol
The sun..now that is a weakness.
The sun makes me extremely sick. I have been known to pass out if I am in the sun for a period of time. I "dry out" and get short of breath.
It hurts.
Same here, though not a vampire I have a hard time in the sunlight, overheat and all that all too quickly. Throughout the summer I have been working mostly outside in the sun and it bothers me so much.
Legend creates "weakness" to make humans feel stronger. Some "creatures" have weaknesses...but sometimes..we can play it out. Why not make ourselves look weak, till the time to strike arises.
Weaknesses to items is a way to make ones self feel like there is a way to save yourself.
Very very very true. I like that. Thanks for bringing it up. It makes sense. but everything has some weakness of course. But a lot of stories put a lot of weaknesses into vampires so they seem really easy to kill...
lol oh, I'm lazy, but I'm even more curious
Here's what I found in a first aproach:
Do Crucifixes Kill Vampires?
A wooden crucifix could cause serious superficial burns, and, given enough time, could prove fatal. But this is a chemical effect, not a religious one.
Many vampires are of devout Christian, Central European descent, and a crucifix could well trigger severe guilt feelings; in some cases, self-loathing. But not fatality.
Do Vampires Fear Water?
Yes; A vampire really is an incendiary device waiting to be detonated (check the theory), and water, even steam, presents a real risk to the vampire.

http://www.vampyreverse.com/facts/faq.shtml#Water
erm...I guess this raises even more questions...
hmmm...interesting I still don't know if I buy it just because I have my own stubborn beliefs. I think there are basic things that bother a vampire but not so religion based. But that's just me. I can understand the cross/guilt deal.
this becomes more and more confusing...like the coffin bit. Why sleep in a coffin when there is a nice bed?? I happen to like the coffin bit..but is it truely nessacary..
I don't buy that. Neither the water nor the coffin. I think both are either personal choice (coffin) or folklore.
I've been told that vampires whom cannot cross running water, are weakened by it due to it resembling blood flowing from the neck, making them want to turn back and hunt. I'm not sure if it is true, but I'm humoring my friend and puttign this down.
Don't humans also fear running water, cause u never know where it is safe to cross...there are many ways to look at it.
Vampires cannot cross running water, even over bridges and what not, not just the water itself. Even if its like a small river or a large lake.
the coffin in which they sleep was the one they were buried in. and it is filled with earth from their native land, that is how they renew they powers.
that is why they sleep in coffins and not in beds
in some book i previously read it said that nothing dead could pass through running water. i'll find out why eventually. crosses and such i believe are also true.
Most of the vampire myths are false... I have crossed running water, eaten garlic, and everything else... Myths are just that...
Myth~a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon; usually dealing with supernatural beings
Myths are made so people can describe the world around them, so they are not true, for certain...
garlic reminds the vampyre of their own breath and they don't like it that is why they recoil from it. don't forget that the vampyre is dead and the dead have very bad breath
is it just cross', or is it anything religious that vamps dont like? i mean, what about Buddist symbols? native American symbols? or perhaps the most common "modern" symbol of peoples beliefs/God , money :) If i have to fend off a vamp an money works,I'll let ya know
it all depends on what religion they were before they were turned. ie a Jewish vampyre would be affected by the star of David
sun is the only weakness i have... but my lord also has a thing with garlic... it makes him sick... those are the only ones that i can think of... that water shit is wrong because we have to bathe as well!
Garlic.....bring it on. Running water I can cross....unless it's Holy Water blessed...then we have a problem. I can look at a cross all day...
As Loius siad " I'm quite fond of looking at them"
LOL Marius, One must also ask then of Lycans, born originally of Gaia, would a Pentagram destroy them?
I have worn my mothers cross many days, and it does not affect me. Not because I denounce god, merely because I don't believe a simple object can harm me by pressing against my skin.
my friends and I wanted to know can a vampire be in daylight if hes inside his coffon?
Well is the coffin closed? Then I believe yes, im not a vampyre, though If the coffin is closed I would assume yes. Though perhaps another would be more enlightened to that kind of information.
not sure but water sets bounders for evil it cant cross it even over a bridge . it a system of checks and balances
Maybe if certain spells against evil have been done on the running water. Just the whole idea of vampires not being able to cross seems hoaky to me.
allright then well I geuss that kinda answers my question
stupid people closed minded small minded arrogant people
I think the guy has a point.
As I always say, the vampires of myth and film fear these things. This is because anything that is created has to have a weakness, because that is the glimmer of hope in the pandora's box... in our egocentrism we compare everything to humans; therefore all thing must have weaknesses like us.
I see vampirism as a lifestyle, and if anyone thinks that they are Lestat, then thats a shame.
Its a decent question Morrigon, so dont think that I am being derogatory towads you. I simply mean my post as trying to get around this mentality.
for me my weakness ae sunlight, garlic bothers me and im light sesitive bight things piss me off lol
Frankly I think Vampire greatest biggest weakness is beauty...
Yendor, you have an interestign point, and I hope you will expand on what you mean.
well am a plain human but still am weak with a certain weather....
This is turning into a 'vampires of media' thread (no offence Morrigon.)
lol then I know for sure I'm not a vampire as I Scuba Dive :P
mmm indeed haven't seen a vampire swimming.
And ofcourse remember the count in Bram Stokers movie.
On board his ship he's in a coffin filled with earth.
Frankly, the thing about the holy water sounds interesting, but water in general I dunno.
I see many things brought up in movies, books, and magazines how vampires. All they really talk about is how evil they are and how to get rid of them. It could possibly be another thing added on to catch the eye of one who could never understand what it means to be one.
The thing about the cross...well I believe that some things can only effect you if you believe they can. It could also be a way of again displaying how weak they are and less superior to mere mortals.
......Well I definitely can't swim. I hate the beach and pool areas. I am also afraid of deep water. I never wanted to learn how to swim, how useless it is. Unless, you live in an area where you have to know. I do bathe though, otherwise my wife would cut my off from the booty big time:]
If water hurts and crosses burn, well then, someone tell the One God to make sure he got it right. I'm a water sign and enjoy swimming and Crosses do not hurt or bother me.

Yeppers..I love the water. I wear crosses, pentagrams...whatever..."oh no i'm melting' lol... sterotyping vampires..because of tv..movies...doesn't that get old. Evolution HELLO!
ROFL Natalia, Hell yeah I wouldn't touch you. lololol Glad you aren't that afraid of water.
Only thing that gets me is uv; cant see, exposed skin stings, and i get sick and exhausted (mind and motor functions work about as well as someone who's been up for two days) after only a minute or two of exposure. The only time i was stuck out long enough to burn, i collapsed.
Interesting that some humans are very UV sensetive as well.
Yes, seen those poor kids, I had a chance to do a study on a few, for a paper in college. The trick with them is, that any light at all hurts them. For instance one kid had to where a hood and sunglasses just to travel at night, becuse headlights could permenetly blind him. Light bulbs, flash lights, spots, floods never bother me. (I run lights for a local theater company) Personly i prefer it dark, but that just that personal.
Yes, that would be terrible. Some days the light is really hard on my eyes, not sure why. One night I had to wear sunglasses at a resturant because the lights were burning, my eyes were watering like crazy and i could barely keep them open. Damn I felt stupid.
I would get bad headaches...in class..because of the lights...i was prone to passing out...
Well the lights in schools are horrible. Seems like they're trying to poison your brain. they are very strong too, and flicker.
Where are other places where the indoor lighting is just plain horrible? We should write them letters, "excuse me, the UV sensitive people need you to change your lights, oh yeah and the vampires."
Yeah can't forget us. :) Some restaurants have horrible lighting. How am I to enjoy my steak with this crappy lighting? lol
Lord, speaking of flickering lights actually, I was in perkins the other day and there was this fan that was running, and the blades kept going in front of this one light so it was almost a strobe light effect. It was terrible, gave you an instant headache. Why do things like that happen?
Now see lights in schools, factorys, and even those new HID headlights don't bother me, but a couple minutes out in the sun and I feel like I've just woken up from a concussion. I'm not prone to passing out, heck it's been three years since I've had even a head cold.
Concussions are painful.. Yeah. I know how that is. The sun is my major weakness. And I can't use sun screen. Everytime i do i get sun posioning. I'm the type of person who goes to the beach to swim at 3 am.
On what, when i passed out? I was told by the ER that I gave off symptoms of heat exhaustion, even though it was only 75 out and i had been exposed for (as far as i can remember) two hours, and i was sitting the whole time. Still their explaination was heat exhaustion.
I'm usually good in the sun, it's just my eyes that get effected. I suppose with the flashing or flickering lights could it get annoying because your pupils don't have any time to adjust.
hmm, ive nvr heard anything about vampires haveing a weakness of water. but crosses im not totally sure about
i love to swim(mostly at night when i can have the pool to myself) and as far as crucifixes goes i just flat out don't like them.at times i'm obligated to enter a church and everytime i do i feel a pressure in my chest and it gets hard to breathe...i normally don't stay in them for more than a few moments unless i reeeeely have to,and even then i find an excuse to leave
To answer your question you have been either listening to people who watch too many vamp movies or you have been watching too many of those movies. Hollywood has turned vampires into such a fucked up idea of fiction just to get rateings.
Running water? No problem. If I had a bathing suit, I'd go swimming.
Religious Objects? Which Religion? Once again, no problem. I'm pagan, and tend to wear an Ankh (egyptian symbol for life).
I'd assume those got started when the Catholic Church started demonizing anything that wasn't Catholic back in the dark ages. If you weren't with them you were against them and probably going to be burned at the stake or hanged.
Hence to keep power, they kept ignorant people in fear.
BTW I'm not trying to pick on the Catholics, I'm stating historical fact.
i dunno...god doesnt want me in his house and he's really never been in mine
I think that the weakness differs from vamp to vamp, i personally despise water in certian instances, sunlight and photography are my two main pains
I do have a bit of problem with the sun, if I get to much or exposed to heat to long, I get really sick. Sun does bother my eyes a little, but due to my work schedual 3 pm to 1230 am, I don't have to bother with the sun to much, specially since I'm in and out of the airplane all day.

I dont think that water or religious symbols have any effect on vampires. I've read and heard so many diffeent stories, and none of them are the same. Some say its wooden stakes and crosses, while another might say running water and silver stakes, or what have you. Personally, I honestly think that the only thing that can harm a vampire is sun light, or UV rays.
something tells me you stake ANYONE in the heart with a wooden steak they might die....dont quote me on that...but im guess they probably would bleed and then die.
we are still living people, so if you stake anyone we die. Painfully might I add.
I do think that everything must have a weakness, but I also don't think that vampires have as many as some stories say they do.
yeah, but we aren't immortal beasts of the night with super human powers and what not. Either way we are still normal people, just with a few extra items attached to us
That is a great question..I'm don't have many weaknesses..but I haven't been out in the sun for three months..and I know that when I did yesterday my skin hurt but that happens to anyone who hides from direct sunlight. I do know that I'm not weakened by a cross or garlic..All of that is babble made up by the writers of dracula and other ealry vampire movies and myths.
pfft, water?
doesnt do a thing, i even bathe... occasionally
as to water, it only does not quench the thirst. crosses, they fear the wraith of god. sunlight, we are cursed to the darkness. surprisingly u will find stuff abotu vampyres in the bible
I have taken my own bend on vampires
Mine wear crosses and eat pizza and walk in the daylight, they are weaker in day tho
The water issue is a new one to me.
Crosses and running water...a lot of folk-lore!
I can understand certain reaction on silver or garlic....
Some creatures are allergic to some substances.
But Crosses...if you are not a christian you cannot turn a Vampire away?
On the other hand Vampires are very ancient (before Christ and his symbol)!
I don't believe that a cross can have any result against a vampire...at least not more than any other symbol!
The crosses and holy water don't burn, they disgust. Look at the smaller picture with Hollywood. You'll be suprised at how many directors are trying to tell you something.
If you feel that you have a strong distatste for Christianity and you think your a vampire, then i suppose it wouldbring disgust, btu only like anything else would.
religious symbols no, and water definitely not i shower daily
lol:-)i love showering and it doesnt hurt me at all...i think sucking an old blood could kill me...brrrrr
Those who feared vampires at the time the myths and legends where so popular where very strong Christians... this was a comforting protection of God.
i dont belive that vampires are affected by water or a cross or any religous items. the sun maybe.
My own greatest weakness is the sun. I don't tan, I burn horribly and it hurts my eyes, so when I go out in the sun I wear spf 45 and sunglasses.... and usually wear long clothes (shirts/pants, etc). As for the other things, I don't believe there is any truth to them, just "old wives tales".
well every religion has a vampiric creature in it even the mayans they just have different names. oh yea i dont have a religon its just fun to study
crosses are supposed to drive vampires away, according to legend. Also, they can`t go out in the sun,and have a fear of holy water(water blessed by the, catholic church).
Oh you know a cross wont work if the vampire itself is a christan and hold the lord as protector but a vampire like that isnt one to be feared unless he sees as a threat or hes just really hungry. My friend and mentor is half and was a catholic and he wears his cross every day but then again theres more to him than his vampiric self
I don't know about vampires' physical weakness but I know about their mental one. Its all about how strong they are, inside theselves and if they still with guilt strongly. Guilt and Loniless is a big killer of vampires. And also the idea of living forever can be deadly.
