this is a good question actually, why would a vampyre be allergic to silver?
I believe it goes something along the lines that.. silver is supposed to purify the blood. I'm not sure though, Lucios knows this one better than I, and he's still pased out.
It is a very dizzying question. I personally like silver.
I think it has to do with silver being pure... it comes into effect in a LOT of legends.. not just vampires and lycans...
it was even used to bind a witches hand, and kill the devil in one story... but that's fiction anyway..
isn't silver a "religious" metal?
Silver as a blood purifier is a possibilty. It has been proven that certain oxides of silver do have anti-biotic and anti-microbal qualities. If you use the assumption of viral vampirism, perhaps it is these oxides that single out and destroy this particular virus.
it may also have stem from medieval legends were silver may have been more abundent?
I always preferred silver than gold.
And as well I've heard from somewhere that it purifies the blood.
If I remember right, it Silver was to represent that Judas, the betrayer of Jesus, was the first vampire. In which, the silver he so gained for selling out Jesus would so hurt him in unlife, bring pain constantly for his betrayal of Gods only son.
Yet not sure about the validity of the story.

i think that the vampire-silver thing is just a myth like alot of others
Its a myth, I just meant not sure if that info was from a movie or actual legend passed down.
"why would a vampire be alergic to silver?"
is my same question
I've read that silver is considered a metal of purity in many cultures and used for many centuries to ward off evil...and that vampires can't be killed by silver only weakened... and that you can't kill something that is already dead
I think that most crosses were made from silver in past times therefore it was not really the silver that vampires were afraid of but the cross
Silver?! But I love Silver! It only comes second to white gold! Anyhow mentioning how Silver bullets weaken Vampires, werewolves etc. It does kill humans as well. So whats the fuss about?!
yes but because of the time period
i think they where getting the vampires and werwolves confused b/c they say at that time they could not really tell the diferance if u look at the history and storys i mean yes and no to that last point
Never really thought of anything like this....so its really tough to answer.
Silver, I think doesn't do anything! That it won't even slow them down! It's just another legand to use!
if its true....will a vampire die from silver earrings?
I personal think thats BS! but i wear silver everyday because its very pretty and i know alot of ppl that complement me for it! but then again i thought silver only killed werewolves!
Interesting thread.
I found this:
"THERE IS A SELF EMPOWERMENT ALTERNATIVE ALLOWING YOU TO OBTAIN GOOD HEALTH AND MAINTAIN A STRONG AND VIGAROUS BODY WITH A CLEAR AND ACTIVE MIND!
A daily teaspoon of colloidal silver as alternative medicine, can be used instead of antibiotics and can be effective for acne control, pink eye, immune system booster, and as a sinus infection treatment."
at
http://www.alchemistsworkshop.com/
so, I guess Sionofrequiem might have a point.
This raises the old question of the holy and the unholy, wich leads to a rather complex pardox, because if silver cleans the body, why would anyone want to feed of the ill?
I think it does have a lot to do with folklore. Specially waht you said about the betrayall of Judas and the silver coins. But then again, here's another breach: If Judas died from regret and silver, shouln't silver count as an asset?
Please enlighten me.
Silver is probably just something that film makers made up so the "good guys" have something to kick ass with! Could've been gold , ect... (my opinion)
The whole "vampires don't like silver" thing seems to be a hollywood invention.
I wear tons of it and have no issues whatsoever, it's a personal choice.
this is interesting... perhaps it would be similar to how people in the same family would be all allergic to peanuts... only a stronger dominant gene throughout vampires that mutates during transformation into a vampire? I dunno, maybe my reason sounds crazy.
I too tend to prefer silver... but I am known to be allergic to it around my neck and wrist.... wonder why!
mabe its some thing in the chemical make up of silver that reacts with the mutated cells of the undead
Could be something to do with the purity of silver. Vampyres can't be pure, they are full of other peoples blood, not really anything is their own. Who knows.
That theory of jesus and the last guy there is excellent. I wish i thought of it earlier. That could be it.
King....Good question as always....
I think that this silver crap got sprouted by its relationship towards purity, cos all of us know that a 'vampire' has to be all ‘evil’, ‘seductive’ and ‘deadly’. I’m surprised that no one has ever given a pitchfork to the traditional ‘vampire’
Hmm maybe goes with the idea of the vampire is not supposed to see himself in a mirror.. and as silver reflects etc etc just a thought, but anyways I dont believe its a real thing, just a myth like all the others; garlic, stake etcs.
Still its a good thread, thanks for bringing it up King ;)
Thank you everyone for the comments anymores?
Miss Emmy, Non and LadyBlood: LOL! thanks for the comments guys! :*
And yes, it IS fiction..I would just like to know what's with silver that kills a vampire..ANY theory is accepted. Thanks!
=)
Yeah for example the garlic thing.
Isn't garlic supposed to make blood better,in that case wouldn't the vampire be more attracted to it?
And hitting the vampire with a wooden pointed stick in his heart 0_0
I think everyone would die at that!!!
And then the sun,too much sun annoys everyone and it could also be a medical thing.
And I've heard about the mirror thing too.
What a pity for the vainly ones lol!
Anyway...
Silver won't kill kin. Nope. I am allregic to silver, but its because my whole family is. Not because I am a Vampire
silver doesnt kill vampires it kills werewolves and killing a vampire can be with sunlight and other stuff. thats why i hate the day and i love the night better
ahhh...kill or weaken..the question is..why? and it doesn't include the sun..thank you.
mm..interesting..i love silver...i don`t like gold..mm maybe for the colour? dunno..
i would rather be in the night as well, only because the sun hurts my eyes-but i dont burst into flames.
I have never seen a vampire that couldn't withstand silver..It is a lie, indeed...
I wonder if it might have something to do with the idea that energetically silver is a dispersing metal. Gold is tonifying and stainless is neutral.
So if you are dealing with someone who needs blood/energy (deficient) then a dispersing metal with dispalce too much of their already precious energy1- hence the "allergy" to silver.
Just a thought... since you were asking just for the fun of it!
you know, i think this is the first time where i read anywhere that silver is suppose to hurt/kill vampires...
very interesting even if it is just a fable
I shall have to be with you on that Zuberi....Never have I heard such nonsense...Everything I have peirced on my body was real silver...
I think that this may be a recently invented way of dealing with hollywood movie monsters... I do know that colliodial silver has blood purifying properties. and can cure many maladies today.. possibly that is why they would come up with such nonsense like that.. because vampires feed on blood, and yet their blood is an amalgram of other peoples, maybe the silver breaks down the blood, causing whatever is in the blood that keeps vampires alive to dissipate, therefore weakining them before killing them.. altho I personally consume blood, and have taken colliodial silver as a treatment for disease, and I am still here.. and also I am very fond of silver. go figure..just a theory.....but thats the ramblings of my mind.
Many metalic elements are in a certain degree toxic! Some of them are toxic in small quantities (like Mercury, cadmium etc) some other metalic elements are toxic in larger quantities (ie. copper). Silver might be toxic too in certain quantity!
Saille has a really good point, thats what I first thought as well.
However, people like you, Benoit, are what stops us having intelligent conversation around here.
I'm currently watching this anime called "trinity blood". It's really good...wait that's not the point.
My point there is they use silver bullets to 'poison' and kill vampires...but arent those supposed to be for werewolves?
If vampirism could be considered a disease,
a bacteria that spreads through the blood.
Silver has germicidal effects and kills many microbial organisms in vitro without causing noticeable harm to more complex life-forms. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, wrote that silver had beneficial healing and anti-disease properties. Various kinds of silver compounds are sold as remedies for a variety of diseases. However, no clinical study has yet demonstrated a therapeutic use for silver as an antibiotic in vivo.
Silver compounds were used sucessfully to prevent infection in World War I before the advent of anti-biotics.
Silver compounds are used to accelerate healing in burn victims.
Just a thought.
Silver and anything supernatural have gone hand in hand for centuries, but it is beileved that supernatural creatures such as vampires are alergic to it because it is a pure medal.
"silver is the metal of the moon and since Lycans and shifters are moon bound, so I think, ALL that concerns the moon would affect a lycan or a shifter." you said it ur self. vampires are also affected by the moon and are moon related. also, silver is a sacred metal in mythology and things like this. silver can cause death to a vampire if inhaled because it stays in the body. if shot through the heart by a silver bullet or stabed by a silver steak then they will also be "purified" by the sacred metal, and going through the vampire's heart it will rub off into the heart's mucile.
finaly an intresting topic but i have herd nuthing new whut i have herd thow is that siver is a pure metal , and the part that neather hevin nor hell would igsept the betrayer of gods only son ovesly god wouldent let him in and considering satin was a falin angel and gods right hand man who was said to try tack over he would still not wont to mess with that umm as for a shap shifter i have herd that u got to hit them in the hart or fuck all happins but an ingory lycins i dont know to much about only that there a rare and powerfully speacheys of wolf differnt from a basic wearwolf and that siver in its purist form when milted can be pourd in a hot tea and the drops in the glass will tell u ur futer kinda like the tea leaf thing but i have also herd that siver was a preshes metal and was cursed or some thing so ya if any one can make sence of whut ive said feel free to try and read i dunno y i just thought of this but whut if it was a siver crusifix ok now i am off topic bye
ok i thought werewolves were the only ones against silver why vampires? just because of dracula 2000? ok i think thats soo funny
oh by the way as you see in alot of pictures of vampires what kind of rings do they wear? silver
Silver nitrate or oxide(cant remember which) is used in certain types of antibiotic cremes and bandages...because it helps wounds heal faster and helps the purification of the wound...more the blood. Silver has always been said to "cleanse" the blood and spirit.
And since science has proven somewhat that being a vampire is a infection of sorts...silver would cleanse the infection. Same reasons why werewolves are "allergic" to silver.
there are many misleading facts out there silver hurting vampires appears to be another maybe spread by vampires themselves ? Or it could just be another invention of hollywood . AS I have never been bothered by silver and most of my jewelery is silver I believe this to be truely just another misleading myth
Most "vampire" wanna be's wear silver because its the goth look that makes the outfit.
so ofcourse they are willing to say it's a myth because they are not really being affected by it. just like sunlight.
But silver does have(like sabastian said) healing remedies to it...the "cleanse" the blood
thank you nightangels...I have seen many people state the ACTUAL medical and scientific properties but few seem to acknowledge it. Everyone wants to make it seem like it's this whole fabricated tale that either vampires or the media just decided to say "silver is all holy"
and in some books I have seen it says that silver will SLOW a vampire down.
Good thread King...... :)
Hmmm... I don't really know but I thing that it 's only a Myth
untrue many of the members of my house will only wear silver and it does not effect us in any way...
Well, I don't really know how to answer this quetion , but from my point of view, there are people who have pale, sensitive skin and have lack of iron in their blood stream who are allergic to silver in most cases!-these characteristics are identical to a vampire's ...maybe those are the factors...or maybe silver produces free radicals that weaken more a vamps health and then he's dead.
Yea, basically the main story I hear is that silver is the metal they used to nail Jesus, represents the 30 pieces of silver, and is a holy metal. Must of the time the bullets and what not are blessed. Or melted down from a cross.
*kisses RaChellE*
this person thinks....good theorizing hun
...a stake through the heart, holy water, or direct sunlight kills a vampire...
i can't fathom how silver could kill a vampire. Maybe because it's in a constant state of being shapeshifted into a vampire? Ii know that's kind of streching it but it's the best Ii could come up with.
I really don't think that a vampire is going to be affected by silver. . .
Maybe it's synonomus to Clark Kent being allergic to kyrptonite.
Or another theory is that the physical properties in silver don't mix well with properties of vampyre blood.
I love silver. I am constantly wearing necklaces and have yet to get so much as a rash. However, a friend of mine gave me a silver necklace that she got from church. I barely touched it and my skin aced. I wonder if that has something to do with it.
i dont believe silver really kills a vampire. its all a myth. no one knows for sure how to kill a vampire. there might not be a way to kill a real vampire.killing a vampire with silver, holy water, garlic, wooden stick through the heart is just something that people/movies created.
we as far as being shot...i dont care if its copper..if you get shot right your going to die...but as far as silver goes...its a bunch of crap...im wearing 3 silver rings right now and i feel fine...so yeah...
there is the fact the the movie vampire hunters is a very gorry and awsome movie but at the end the main vampire hunter takes the huge cross and tries stabbing the vampire with it and it doesn't kill him but the vampire pulls the cross into him with the stake at the bottom end of the cross and he touches the cross part and still doesn't die and i can't remember how the vampire died but i know that he did
And also the best kind of silver i find from movies is blades famus silver bullets and stakes...
The first I heard of silver causing harm to Vampire's was in Wes Craven's Dracula 2000. The legend goes that Judas Iscariot was the first vampire (or, in the movie, was Dracula) and that silver would bring harm to him because of the sorrow he felt over selling out Christ for a bag of silver.
I had never heard of this before the movie, although I wasn't as studied as I am now (which isn't near the level of some of the others here at the Rave).
i thought that is was only true it movies and books wow i guess i was wrong
I was thinking about reflection, like the light bouncing off the metal. Don't quite know though.
Ec 12:6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Ec 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
I don't know, just a thought.
It represents the soul and when broken supposedly leaves the body.
So, if a vampire stays clear of silver it may be because they don't want their soul revealed to them, it would end their life having roamed the earth with their soul still intact.
as magnetism is to nickel :silver: reflection is to ground.
Ya i too think it has to do with Silver being a pure element much like salt being used to ward off any "evil spirits" by making a ritualistic circle or some such...
I dont like this Silver kill/hurts vampires, thing.
Its stupid. So often you have a new movie or tv series (Buffy TVS, et al) creates a new way to kill vampire.
Like jazz and country music to kill vamps, lol
Personally, I think only wood can kill. And fire too can destroy a vamp, otherwise they are invincible at night
And on a side note, The russian othadox church said to Vlad Dracul tepsh(Vlad the Impaler if he did not renounce the roman catholic church and their beliefs, that when he dies the would pierce his heart with a silver steak to symbolize his excommunication. Perhaps this could be another theory.
strange...i like silver...nothing happened to me...y would vampires be alergic...
I agree that silver is the element of the moon and therefore should hold no threat to the creatures of the night
i as well am afriad of crosses that might be cuz im messed up i dn
Well I have always known that Silver is harmful to Vampires...I have an idea (even though it may be stupid) maybe since Sliver is a metal that humans are kinda obsessed with, that when a Vampire gets injured by Silver they feel the greed and craving for Silver that a human has...I've also wondered, since Sliver is harmful to Vampires, what does Gold do to them???
I believe it has religious aspects as well as medical. The same as the theory of garlic. Garlic also purifies the blood, And if you eat too much garlic you feel the burn.
i guess everyone is allergic to something but..how could we all be allergic to the same things...we should find a willing vampire or two to try it out
yeah that makes you ponder....interesting, very mind boggeling...
maybe vamps have a disslike for all pretty shiny thinks, maybe theyre like anti-magpies, lol.
no, traditionally silver was used in curches for crucifixes, candle sticks, etc.
i love silver, its positively one of the most beautiful metals on the earth.
i like gold personally, my skin reacts badly to silver
I usually only wear silver and it never gives me trouble.
this is a really interesting topic for me... i have friends that claim to be hunters... some of them coat their weaps in silver and when i asked them they said it was just what they had been taught. silver does slightly annoy me though.
as to my thoughts on why it weakens vampires. i have to agree with the moon idea... i think that silver absorbs some of the suns energy, just enough to do damage but not enough to really make the silver glow
This is a first that I've heard of this one. I did find Judas theory interesting.
Maybe it was a rumor so that people would buy more silver jewellery since people used to prefer gold....
a myth spurred by economy *taps chin... interesting idea, it happens often enough i wouldn't be surprised. the judas theory is an interesting idea as well.
i'm curoius if there is some sort of chemical difference between humans and vampires that effects how silver reacts.
i'm not saying i'll lead the investigation on it but it definitely could have part in it.
hmm that is a good question and i don't really see a solid connection either i'll try to put some research in and see if i can find a connection.
silver naw it couldn't hurt a vamp...but this little vamp is allergic to gold. weird but true.
I have but one compound word for this...silver thing.
BULLSHIT
Silver burns but does not really hurt... neither do crosses or garlic thats bullshit and so is the whole holy water thing it burns but does not kill
Silver was thought (and still is to this day) to be a purifier. I have known many to use silver rods to inject Argent into there own drinking supply.
It isnt so hard to make the assumption that what purifies the body would destroy the body of the unclean.
Others believe that when the skin of a vampire excretes sweat (weither it be actual sweat or blood ala Rice) the dead body excretes a toxin that reacts violently to silver.
Thus, making stab wounds from silver blades more dangerous because of the burning of the flesh, therefor taking longer to heal.
i think it has more to do with certian religions a vampire would decay or burn from silver because in roman times they would have suspected vampyers drink liquid silver and if they died over the nextfew days they were a vamp and if not they'ed try a different test........
The real question is this. In alchemaic times silver represented the moon, while gold represented the sun. Now, why would a metal of the moon, do damage to creatures of the night? Shouldn't it be gold that would do far more damage?
silver may be a purifyer, never checked it out, but silver is the metal that reflects the most light if properly refined, also silver is a poison, weak, but a small chunk of silver spread through your bloodstream will very well sicken your body and dilute your thought proccess
Ironically its also a good thing to have in your body. You can take up to 5mg a day before you really start to get sick from it, everything else is just gravy on the boat.
I didn't know silver was also a poison!
I do know, however, that if one is allergic to any metal, contact with that metal can cause pain! How fast this happens depends on how severely allergic the person is...
I am sure there are some vampires out there who are allergic to silver, as there are humans out there allergic to silver. Vampires can be allergic to anything humans can because the bodies they inhabit are human (mortal) bodies!!!
It was stated earlier that the legend could come from the inability to distinguish vampires from werewolves and other creatures of the night, or from religious connotations of silver. Either idea would seem like a plausible theory as to the origins of the vampire and silver legend to me!
