For the 3rd time I have come across outright plagiarism in the VR database/Member Articles. The submission guidelines state:
'This section is for original work by Vampire Rave members ONLY. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.'

Don't do it.

It is stealing, and although I am not sure about what could happen- it just can't be good from a legal standpoint for Vampire Rave, publishing works that were so very obviously written by MAJOR prominent authors/lyricists.

If you have found your work missing- come to me and I will show you the clear references that have been found.

It is not just a VR rule. It is AGAINST THE LAW, folks.

It's all about common sense people. Common sense tells us, if someone else wrote it they are certainly not going to like the fact that all the hard work they did was stolen. Don't be so lazy, do your own ish for a change!!!!

Heh if you don't have any good article don't post it.Don't post an article just to see your name written in the Database. If you'll get caught it won't be a nice thing at all.And you would deserve it.

Is it alright if you clearly state where the work has come from?

Sometimes i cite a song or poem some else has writtin to describe how i am thinking at the moment, when i cannot seem to form the words. However i clearly state it is not my work, and who's work it is.

No. you can not. You can copy a small passage to mention it but most writers will say no to printing a whole article. On a larger scale; it is like you reprinting "War and Peace" and just saying well...I like the book at the moment...so I copied the whole thing! Would that seem OK with you?

well heres an example of what happens when you dont site...
it was in the los angeles times (dont have the article but ill para phrase)

there was a wide known author, he also produced a tv series called band of brothers...made over 100 books and over 1500 pages of written work.
it was discovered in his books that he did not give proper credit to passages he took..and even though he said who wrote the passage or who said the passage, the passage was not in proper format..meaning he did not put the passage in quotations. out of 1500 pages, only 10 werew found to be used improperly...nopt many you would think, but it takes only one misused work to be taken as plagiarsim.
his lost his honor and a author, the respect and the fame, he was charged with fraud and he went to his death with everything he had worked for being all for naught.

so....a simple reminder that because you think you can get away with it, or that its not a serious offence...but people are out there who look for these things and will press changes if they find out....

so dont do it!!

oh on a side note....dont condem everyone who has articles and assume becuase the words they use are of high articulation that they are plagerized or "cut and paste jobs."

youd be surprised by the intelligence of those who summitted the articles...and it doesnt take a highly intelligent person to use a thesaurus to replace simple words...

all it takles is a bit of time and dedication...and thats why most people summitt the articles because they care about the quality of their work

and im not jumping down anyones throats...just dont want people to lose site of those who followed the rules

this is why I have not submitted articles...
the way i describe things is through much use of various points of reference I have found in other works.....and i know that to place this in an article is to plaigiarise....so i simply don't do it....
and in threads I will try to reference my info unless I don't honestly recall where i got it...often it's random garbage floating in my memory.....those bits of miscelaneous detritus we all carry called trivia....
and yes...plaigiarism can land you with both fines and potentially a jail term.....
all it takes is one uptight lawyer with the scent of a clients money in his nostrils to start proceedings

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got bothered by the Plagiarism in the 'Member Articles'. What i wonder, dont they get checked before posting them? I mean usually you just have to copy paste 1 line of the text into google to get it.

It doesnt bothers me if someone uses a few lines from somewhere else and isnt mentioning the source, but copying whole pages and then say, I wrote this, is just way out.

You all seem to forget one thing. Common Sense isn't common. If common sense was common then there wouldn't be so many issues in regards to this or other aspects of life.

Yet, if you stand back and look at the bigger picture you will understand that not a lot of people have that aspect in their lives.

If we had common sense then the Sanguinarium wouldn't be around, if we had common sense then half the stupid little fights people get into wouldn't happen.

Everyone seems to forget about that common sense isn't common.

I wouldn't accuse someone of plagerizm because they are articulate and well written, however, when I can look up the topic on an online encyclopedia and find the article word for word..which I have seen...then yeah...copy and paste. Or when the text has strange breaks or alludes to non-existant captions..you know?

Now here is the thing. Someone could have written the work themselves and their own work then taken from them and placed on a big fancy site. Then, when people go look up this site and see it, they figure the other person is the one in the wrong.

Now there is no way around this unless you put Copywrite upon your stuff, yet that doesn't happen because not many have the ability to do such.

Those that plagiarize particularly in the concepts that those of us do write in end up insulting us to some degree. Not only is there potential that our words and materials will be taken and used for their gain but they discredit the time and effort that it took us to write on these conecepts.

I have seen it even in Journals though those are private and not a whole lot that can be done about it, it still irks me when I see people proclaim themselves to be something they aren't by putting up material that they don't source.

I found this website and maybe its interesting for them who are not sure what plagiarism is.

Definition

Lets start with a definition:

Plagiarize 'pla-je-,riz also j - - vb -rized; -riz·ing vt [plagiary] : to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (a created production) without crediting the source vi: to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source - pla·gia·riz·er n

FROM: Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 9th ed, (Springfield, Ma: Merriam 1981, p. 870).

What to do
Now what does this mean for you?

1. First, it is unacceptable to copy something out of a book, newspaper, journal or any other printed source. The most blatant example of this is to directly copy something word for word. It does not matter if it is only a phrase. If it is not yours, either do not use it or place it in quotes and reference it. There are different methods for doing this. The important thing is that the reader can tell what is yours, and what is someone else's.
1. For short quotes, use quotation marks in the sentence. An example is "CFC's: These substances are also of concern in connection with the destruction of stratospheric ozone" [Bunce, N. Environmental Chemistry (Winnipeg: Wuerz, 1994, p. 19)]

2. b. For longer quotes it is appropriate to indent the entire passage:

Chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs: These substances are also of concern in connection with the destruction of stratospheric ozone (Chapter 2). Like N2O, they have no tropospheric sinks, but are infrared absorbers. Up to 1984, the tropospheric concentrations of three of the major commercial CFCs...

[Bunce, N. Environmental Chemistry (Winnipeg: Wuerz, 1994, p. 19)]

2. Another reason to use references is to show where you get information from. When you state a fact, unless it is "general knowledge," you should say where it comes from. Otherwise, a careful reader will have no way to verify your statement. It may be subjective to decide what is "general knowledge" but keep in mind who is your audience. As an example what is your reaction to the statement:

Wetlands emit 150 million tons of methane each year [Bunce, N. Environmental Chemistry (Winnipeg: Wuerz, 1994, p. 18)].

Without the reference, why should you believe me?

3. The above examples may seem obvious. If you use something word for word it MUST be acknowledged. Things start to get a bit gray when you paraphrase. There is one simple solution to this dilemma. DO NOT PARAPHRASE! Only use someone else's writing when it serves a purpose. Only use someone else's writing when you want to quote precisely what they wrote. If this is not your goal, USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
1. This avoids any ambiguity about who wrote it. After all, you do not want someone to accuse you of plagiarism.

2. You need to learn how to write in your own style. You may be influenced by authors that you find clear and easy to understand, but your writing needs to be YOUR writing. Mimicking someone else is not a productive exercise. You just learn to cut and paste.

3. An instructor who is reading or grading your work is interested in YOUR understanding of an idea. I am not interested in your ability to copy explanations from the textbook. I know that the author of the book understands it, which is why I picked the textbook. I need to know if YOU understand it.

4. Understanding and learning is more than just replaying something you have heard. Writing is a valuable exercise that tests your ability to explain a topic. I often think I understand something, until I try to write it out. This is an important part of learning.

Kat that is a nice bit of work you have post there.

there is more to be added though, since there is a few refrences that discribe a Scientific nature, there is also laws throughout the world in particular the internet.
That allow the writer to use another’s terms or reference in dealing with matters of science ect. I shall try to look it up for you.

this might seem as a stupid question, but I had a case where someone in Denmark had used a project of mine in psycology, the original was on 25 pages, and then someday I accidently stumbeled upon this persons "work" and I recognized it as my paper, but the person has rewritten it all, so it was mostly in his/hers own words... we have had a loud discussion about it..

is that the same or at same level as plagarism?

True Plagiarism is very wrong but there are cases where a persons work may sound similiar to a published article but the writer having no knowledge of this just having the misfortune to have his work closely related to another.

Closely related and an all out cut and paste are totally different. We have complete cut and paste jobs going on and it is simply embarrassing for Vampire Rave.

They still have not all been dealt with. I have been trying for some time- and I will have to push for more assistance. I can only personally edit and delete in the Vampire Database- but in the Member Article section we have plagiarism (complete cut and paste from other sites), and I am making it my personal crusade to get rid of it.

I have omitted the John Polidori Story but given full reference to author if i add a disclaimer would it be acceptable? i am unsure whether it has a copyright and who holds it as it was published a fair time ago and i wanted to omit it purely because of its historical impact on vampirism being one of the first vampire stories to be brought to the public i have also omitted some other important stories that i feel people SHOULD read. If this is unacceptable either with or without a disclaimer could an admin inform me and i will take them down! Thanks and possibly, Sorry :s

It's not just member articles.. I have seen profiles who have totally copy and pasted from other profiles or from a popular myspace I have seen.... It happens alot ... I rate too many profiles.. >.> So I see alot of repeating crap which is ridiculous.. I try to say something about it... and they say they did it themselves when I know it's a lie... Which is kind of sad. - sighs-

I totally hate people who plagarize. It makes me want to choke those who do. I don't like it when people steal my work, and I'm pretty sure no one does.. So, don't do it!

So require a references / works cited page on any article submitted. Pick a format (MLA, Chicago, etc.) and refuse to allow an article that was researched that has no references.

Obviously these people are on the computer already. They can take three minutes to Google "MLA citation format".

Cool beans HJ? lol

It's all about honesty people. It's simple- don't take credit for something you didn't do, didn't write, etc.

Geez- I feel like I'm in JR High again! =)

I'm glad that this issue is being worked on. Plagiarism is something I really hate. I still remember being in highschool and having someone steal a poem I wrote and it got published in the school newspaper. Yeah I never got it copyrighted or whatever and it was just a school newspaper, but it was mine. It was my poem that i worked very hard on. So it really sucks to take someone elses work.

my question is........did you let the person or persons know what they did wrong so that they are aware of what they did and will not do it again.

of course we are telling the people as their articles are coming down. There are still plagiarized works in the Members Articles section that need to come off- I am working with those that have the power to remove them.

plagarism is annoying, not only yfor the reader, but also for the original author.

It sucks to spend a year and sometimes more on fieldwork and writing, and then suddenly all your hard work just pops up on some random website.

It is okay to show interest in the work, I am happy that people think my work is good enough to be posted, but still I feel completely bumbed when someone steals it and claim it as their own work.

to prevent this from happening, make copyright on it. That way when people try to tcopy and paste, a note pops up and says it is not possible...My friend did it on my work..

when you copy and paste an article for the database/articles section, which is specifically for original pieces, it shows not only the level of laziness a person is willing to drop to, but it also shows a huge lack of respect for this site, it's moderators, and it's members. It says that you are not only not willing to work to get your respect as an author, but that you believe the rest of us to be so stupid we would not notice.

While I understand that you are referring to written works on here I also have a real problem with people using others art on here.

As a professional artist, I have had my work used on this site without my permission and I have seen literally hundreds of examples of other artists work on here that I know the person who is using it hasn't asked permission.

It's not that hard to send someone an e-mail and ask.

I've seen so many Dorian Cleavenger pieces on here my head is spinning. How many people do you think actually asked his permission to use his work?

This issue needs to be addressed right along Plagiarism.

JLyons has raised an issue that has been bothering me since I joined VR. I understand the desire to add beautiful art that moves you to your profile. I'm guilty of adding several myself. Still, it is a copyright violation, and often directly against the artists wishes. Isn't it wrong to turn a blind eye to that sort of theft and only focus on the text bandits? I realize that people who add art to their profiles aren't claiming it as their own work, but still, I know of at least one artist whose work is on at least 20% of the profiles here that would blow a fuse over the way her art has been treated.

I think you have to differ a bit about using art and plagiarise.

The kind of plagiarism we are talking about here is to copy stuff from others and actually say U wrote it.

I havent seen yet anybody using a pic on his profile and then saying he made it. most of them state, 'this are images i like'. Different story again, if you use it with photoshop or psp and change it and then say you did it, cause you not really did it all, but used someone elses art.

And then you have the open source stuff, like the brushes and tubes you can use, to enhance/change an image.

It's a really grey area with Art, particularly derivations from original pieces.

The law has sided with the line of having any derivative art, which is altered beyond the scope of the original concept, but which is produced for a personal non-profit function, is not a legal breach of a copyright.

The original artist's may disagree however and it could be seen as plain rude, to ignore an artists request not to use their work in such a fashion.

just a quick note on plagiraism ... it's ok to quote a source as long as you use one of the methods to give that source it's due.

1. footnotes... these are good for multipage documents... not so much the articles because you don't want people running to the bottom every second...

2. quoting. use quotation marks, and the next sentences says who and where you got the quote from. simple.

3. bibilography. this isn't so much to quote your sources as to let everyone know where you got your information from. just remember, your only getting your info from them, not your exact wording.

We've got enough feedback on this one :)

I can only take care of things personally in The Vampire Database. The Member Articles plagiarisms should be brought to the attention of an Administrator, preferrably their House Master if they have one.

Keep taking care of Vampire Rave by making sure we are on the 'up and up'.
