It's hard to come up with a topic on VR that hasn't already been beaten to death so I thought I would ask everyone what sort of topics they're interested in discussing on VR's forum? Anything special you want to bat around or a topic you want to know more about?
How about coming up with a unique perspective on a topic already discussed?
There is nothing against creating new threads coming from a different angle.
Try to be original with your thoughts.
I agree, when someone starts a new thread maybe because it was on thier mind, not realizing that it has been discussed before.they get bombarded with comments on that it has been discussed and to refer some where or to move on. It is tuff to come up with new Ideas. A fresh one would be nice.
How about scientific topics? I'm sure plenty of members would have decent discussions on things other than metaphysical subjects...
DarkSeraphim,
Clearly, it appears that you have spent much more time on the VR forum that your current status level and post count indicate and I would agree in part that many threads are closed, some of which refer to topics that have been done before, but usually these are subjects which have been covered extensively and often, the new thread is begun with an open question, rather than a new proposition.
If new posts are going to ask for the same information that has already been discussed, time and again, especially recently, it does not serve to examine that thread only to receive the same responses.
RENFIELD,
It doesn't take more than a few minutes to try out the forum search, or scroll page by page to find a currently open thread on the most common topics.
If someone has a whim, it usually ends up in the sandbox.
If someone genuinely has a new idea, or creates a discussion through questioning, it does stay put. I know because I read them and try to keep them open.
I unsderstand that, but when we get a newby in here they are not aware how to navigate through the site. I'm just saying that I have seen some unpleasant remarks to the newbies when they start a new thread not knowing it has been discussed previously.
I have been "scolded" before and I took it as a rookie mistake, no big deal. I just dont want anyone feel unwelcome(reguardless of how the remark was meant). But you are correct about taking offence to a simple remark. This is a discussion group made for sharing information. Taking things "personal" is a little immature, yet it still happens. I know we can't please everyone. I just wanted to bring up that point for those few that do give the remarks, to have a little patience with the new people. I remember when I first came here I was a little reluctent to join a forum. If the newbies first post get's a "scolding" because it hase been discussed, that can be a little discouraging to continue to participate. Unfortunately not everyone is as easy going as us, especially the teenies that already have that typical teen mentality of "fuck them then".
I'd like to discuss philosophy, religions and their connection to vampirism, that sort of thing. Whenever it does come up people start talking about it literally and taking everything personally.
i'm new and I am glad to see that at least one person has managed to say what they feel in regards to "us newbies".
I realize that one should learn to look for themselves, but as time is of the essence for some of us it is not always practical to search thru the massive amounts of posts, open or closed to gather information.
and yet i can see from the other side as well. being one who has had to train others--you tend to feel that they should know this stuff already. paitence is always a good thing.
Sgtsneaky
As a newbie, what sort of topics would you like to see discussed on the VR forums?
Good idea Rowan, we should ask the newbies that exact question. That way if they have a topic that has been discussed that we can point them to that thread.
sgtsneaky,
Even though time is of such essence for you, perhaps an exercise in patience from all sides is neccessary?
Is anything you wish to know so urgent, that the relatively small amount of time spent looking a little deeper is unwarranted?
The learning process works more effectively if those who seek it, are prepared to work for it.
RENFIELD
What might be a better idea is for members of VR to write articles on some of the more basic subjects that Newbies wish to know and submit them to the database. This way the information is available 24/7 where if we post it to the forums when the topic gets too old or too large its deleted.
RowanTears,
RIP staus on a thread means that it will not be deleted, but kept so that it may be read later.
Threads which are RIA usually have little substance and so, are deleted.
STABB666
My mistake. But having articles on topics that Newbies might ask in the database would still make sense. That way it would boost information and free up space on the forum.
Im hoping to not get whacked for this.. but..
Metaphsyical.. Lores, Mythology.. all great subjects.. but we all have other things that effect us as well that I would love to see.
Fashion.. I dont envision alot of nekkid psy vamps running around the city.
Job VS Lifestyle.. what kind of sacrficies do people have to make to keep their jobs.. do they quit? move on? try to find something else?
Lifestyle stuff.. Im getting married next year. You know how hard it is to plan a gothic/vampiric wedding? eesh.
which leads into problems with the inlaws.. who dont like the upcoming spouses beliefs.
I did kinda think VR was going to address alot of these type of things on their forums.. and not just feeding and the metaphysical.
Travel too.. but im bias.. as a travel agency owner.. its my favorite subject aside from the macabre things that make my mother go to confession.
but.. im assuming vamps travel too.
You are probably right Sire, I have been here for about a year & still finding new areas & articles havent read yet.As well as still learning to navigate.
Honestly, I think the reason people post these threads is not so they can sit back and read them for a couple of hours. If they wanted to do that they'd search 'em on Google or something. They want to talk about it. You know, discuss. Just because it's been done before by someone, doesn't mean that everyone has already had their say and are satisfied with the results. New members are joining all the time who've never even heard it before. They should have the right to discuss it themselves, not just read the opinions of other people. They should be able to respond. Maybe there should be another section for that sort of thing, that way everyone can enjoy, even people who have posted on it before and want to keep talking about it.
Vashti,
I understand what you are saying, but the case is that many of the discussion threads are still open on a lot of topics, they just have to be dug up (ha ha).
For those threads which are RIP, there is also nothing preventing a new thread, particularly if the discussion is progressing. But there have been numerous instances where a new thread on the same subject has been created and asks only the same questions, which were covered by the previous and sometimes, recent, thread.
I know what your name is "STABB" I was offering a form of respect. See now I am offended by you "scolding" me!!!
LOL just kidding
my tastes along the esoteric..I'm researching for my next thread on parallelism/ non-localities theory
Stabb666, this is true for some but not all. In what I've noticed so far, it's been about 50/50 posts that are open and discuss-able and ones that have been shut down for some reason. In another site I belong to they have a specific section for newbies to post so that they can get the feel of things. The fact is, that not everyone has the time to go back and read every thread that's similar to the one they want to start. Even if they do, and they find that one has been up before, whether it's closed or not, I'm sure that there are other people who haven't discussed it yet. Personally, I prefer to read every post before responding, but if every time someone wanted to discuss something they opened up a 3 month old thread with 6 pages of posts, I doubt I would even look. Besides, if someone has posted on a thread topic before, no one is forcing them to do it again. They could simply ignore it if they wanted to. And if they're the 20th person to mention that it's already been done, it's pretty obviuos that they don't really care what the topic is, they're just trying to up their post count.
Maybe I'm being impractical, but I think a separate area would be a good idea.
RENFIELD,
I wasn't intending to scold you, but there really isn't any need to call me 'Sire'...Honestly. I'm only little old me. Always likely to be as well. Unless I mutate somehow. That might be a bit wierd though. And a bit off topic, so...
Vashti,
I personally don't feel that the board structure is the problem. And we have all the time we need, it's how we use it which matters.
I've seen year old threads and more dusted off and brought back to the front page. And though I appreciate what you are saying about the benefits of other systems, it is true however, that VR operates an open forum policy.
The sandbox is an ideal place for anyone new to the site to begin meeting people.
But in this forum section, the subject matter is required to be specific to the name of this site, where it is expected that people will ask questions and expect a reasoned response, or posit their own thoughts and expect meaningful replies to their efforts.
We owe each other no less.
So when it comes to people looking up old threads, perhaps the benefit is that they are able to gain a more informed opinion, before making a new thread about any particular subject.
I personally would like to see more threads on the ancient side of things.. Old folklore, superstitions etc..
Just my 2 cents worth
lol i know this one had been done and been done but what was your first drop or first feeding like what was the exspirenc like to have that thurst that NEVER goes away!(*well atleast for me it dont*)
I have seen some fairly good topics and before anyone can really respond , or get into a discussion *poof* instant RIA without even the thread given a chance..
In your opinion STABB what makes the topic RIA.. RIP is one thing cause maybe that certain thread has met its limit on information..
Anything which does not fit within the forum posting guidelines may be subject to arbitrary RIA.
yes this I do know .. it did
I t was a good topic and still was RIA thats why I was asking your opinion on what makes it worth keeping open..
Sometimes it seems like a popularity contests .. People that have been here forever seem to get special treatment..
I have seen it both ways newbs with a good topic get RIA someone that has been here alot longer and posts a topic that has been dicussed way to much and it runs forever..
For my personal opinion, I like to see a thread which has discussion in it.
But that discussion ought to meet the theme of the site, in the case of the top forum at least.
I think it is a great idea as a lot of the topics have been gone over extensively and there is really no sense in beating a dead horse. If I were to pick some topics i'd most likely discuss music, lifestyles, nature or poetry...things i share common interest in.
Sis,
how about talking about the annunaki or theory of origination of vampirism , or types of theriantopes or vampirism and how it effects ones daily life .. are people in general open about wha they are.. , Starkin and relationship to vampirism.. well those are jsut a few ideas rolling arround in my head o na sunday afternoon..
~Shadowdancer~
What about the medical aspects of vampirism? What physiological changes occur upon "awakening, feeding, etc"? Isn't there virus of some sort associated with vampirism? Just a few of my thoughts.....
I know it's probably already been discussed but i have only been here for a few months and have yet to find Peganism discussed. Wicca is always discussed. As is vampirism all the different theories. Everyones' different perspective on wicca and magick but i have yet to see pegan discussed. I'm recently really starting to read up on it and i find it quite and interesting subject.
-Tori-
I am new at this site though maybe how everyone came to where they are now
The folks who administer the forums need to cut some slack on new members who want make a simple post.
The search function doesn't always work.
The criteria for being appropriate for which particularly category is so subjective that most people fo straight to the sandbox.
I am surprised that this thread wasn't closed, because "it was apropriate for a journal entry" or "VR Forums" have nothing to with VR.
I couldn't believe a few days ago, that someone who speaks English as a second language made a post about the Romanian language. I added a post of how it relates to Vampires, yet it was closed because the Romanian language doesn't relate to vampires. Yet, we have threads open for years about Reiki and Triangles.
If you want to make the forums better, then take away posts as a metric for levelling up.
As a true newbie. There have been quite a few forums that I have wished to comment on while reading for page count. One I was to low a level. And secondly I did not wish to put my foot in my mouth and get stomped on for it. The topics do not really matter to me. I will go for anything interesting. As far as the request for pegan topics. Sure I'm up for it. I have been into the dark perspective of life since I was 5. Been drawn to it, pulled, even forced by certain aspects. I have read up on much and explored many aspects so what ever is chosen will be worth reading at a minimum. The main thing is the worry of being stuffed for those that take it personnally. Just my opinion.
Pepper,
If members refuse to invest the time to learn how the forums work before deciding to post in them, then they must expect that the criticisms will be harsh, since all of the guidleines are available to read through at our leisure.
That posts count towards changing up a level, is not an excuse to abuse the system.
Besides which, it only counts towards 10% of the level rating. Which means that it shouldn't really be a priority. VR can be used as a game, but it is also an honest attempt to discuss the subject in a serious manner.
This is my opinion and nor representative of the site, but I know many who agree with this point of view.
I would like to get to know more about the people here and their interest. I find behaviour and habits of others intriguing .Something with some substance other then the typical" Im 14 I wear black and drink blood" ( rolls eyes) Its all been done a million times.
Stabb, my response was not at all an agressive response, maybe my words were not well put i must say, but hence it does happen that ppl ae judged by their status or post count, for such i am not refering personally to you, not in a way... but sometimes i do feel that certain posts that were useful were deleted... but thats a personal opinion as said.
Dark Greeting's, I am a Newbe, and am looking forward to posting my first forum topic, but it is intiminidating and I'm 47 and a junior in college, and at times I feel more intiminated by the forum than any paper or class discussion.I like reading all the post's by those of you who have been here for years.i don't take alot of things personally as i've learned through the years and school not to.but i can immagine how the youngin's feel.So this is a good post hope some new ones get in,but cut us newbes a bit of slack.Thanks.
Dark Blessings,
KA
What I mean to say, is that if someone decides to jump in at the deep end, they ought to learn how to swim first...
I'm not sure where the argument of aggression is in this thread. It seems a fairly civil discussion to me. ;)
i must agree stabb actually, once again my wroding was wrong.. damn english not being my first lang, thus i must tell you to bare with one on this one please ;0
I would like to see posts about things like religion especially Christianity's interaction (and possible interference) wtih other religions.
where you can find rare items for witch craft.. lilke dragons blood or dragons breath.. the really rare stuff.
Perhaps a good topic to cover would simply be a history of magic and the occult.
Some works do go into it with some detail, like Encyclopedia of the Occult by Rosemary Guillery (sp?). I like to do some roleplaying (ok, I admit it, I'm a White Wolfer...) and a resource that covers specific historical figures prominent in occult history would be a cool resource to have.
if a thread is RIA ed does that affect your forum post count? and all those who posted to it, then their post was subtracted? because for some reason my count was reduced by quite a bit
god damn this is a long ass one but i wouldn't say that personality disorders wouldn't be a good one...lol
I feel there are so many topics that have been covered already its getting harder to come up with a unique topic that some will get involved with...
As me I will ponder on this and try to come up with a just topic ..
Actually I am enjoying this discussion & getting a lot of really good opinions here. Thes are the type of discussions I like to see, not so much the topic of this particular one, but one that everyone of all levels can be involved in. As for stautus advancment, I went down one because I was not able to get online for a couple of weeks.
Ok this will come from left field, but I would like to see a bit about conservation, more specifically wildlife. I've got a very strong feeling on poachers.
Ok, how about dragons or video games???? I feel kind of silly now. Thanks to my son, Cap'n.
Why bother? It's to damn difficult! People don't read past 2 or 3 pages anyway and when they don't see their topic, they create it. You pay your money, you take your chances and hope for no RIA/RIP.
Well I'm going to put my neck on that chopping block we all love. I would like to possibly discuss the which came first theory...if you don't know what I'm referring to, its creation vs. evolution so to speak.
i would like to know what everyone's name means and why they chose to use it on VR.
My name is explained in my journal.
How about a thread on what members would like to see as standard profile info?
Not required, just preferred.
Just a thought.
Stabb, hope to see around the house sometime.
now to come up with a topic seems virtually impossible, and i think im being serious and realistic about it, to get one that doesn't get RIA u must do a good bit of research as i have been explained
and the reason i understand this is because too many members are using the forum for the wrong reasons like adavancing in levels too quickly and they have made vr more into a game.
if u read my journal about this subject i think i have made a very well thought out understanding of forum topics
i dont mean to offend anyoneor disrespect
thank you
Ok, how about where everyone is writing from. No one need be specific, like their city or what ever, even just the state. I am just curious as to where the majority of people from VR live.
I would love to see some more threads on vampires and other related topics discussed from a scientific point of view, that actually has just a hint of reality to it, and even better, if they could stay that way.
I would also see some more topics on mythology and spirituality.
I think we are gettin goff the main forum subjects a lil bit .. the site is VR .. so should most of the topics we discuss be about Vamps or related ?..
I would really like to see a thread open about Clinical Vampirism (Renfield's Syndrome). Although it is a rare disease it does exist. I think it is an interesting topic that has potential on this site.
I want to see a thread about peoples families..we always post about ourselves, what about our families?
This thread has been around for a few days now I believe. People are saying what they want to discuss and what they are interested in. Even if the topic doesn't fit in the main forum there is another section that it will fit in.
People are rattling off great idea's and things I would find interesting myself but, has anyone started to research the idea's given?
well i do understand why some things need to be repetitive, because we get new members on the rave and they havent had the chance to see other similiar threads of what they want to discuss, or they want their own specific answers to similiar questions
my problem is why couldn't they do it? i really hate to keep bringing it up, but its frustrating, cause i love the true idea of this site its just that everyone is worried about their status and making sire i guess, which is creatting a problem for the real purpose of VR. so almost all threads are getting shut down period.. and it causes a problem as to learning others thoughts and views and meeting other people..
Somebody say "Renfield's Syndrome"? Now that sound's like a good topic.
STABB- for the newer members who registers to the site, why is it that they cannot participate in the same exact topic as was discussed before? i think all members should have the chance to post, learn and interact with the same important topic that others have discussed not get it second hand. and not have the opportunity to meet others interested in the same. but now the new member has to do alot of research to find out if its been discussed before, therefore not getting the answer or discussion they really want, which i believe will show a decline in members who will stay on the site
I have a idea: At what age did you begin to experience Vampyic traits?
raziel,
I really have no idea where you have gained the impression that I have somehow inferred that new members are not allowed to post in the forums.
Even on a topic which has been discussed before.
It seems clear to me that you have misunderstood my previous posts in this thread, if you have read them at all.
If you have a problem with having to read up on a subject before attempting to dicuss it, then I have no sympathy if your posts are contradicted by someone who has.
If asking questions for which answers exist elsewhere in the forum, people may find that they are directed to those, but someone may have the inclination to answer it, if presented in a manner which draws their interest.
This forum can only be what we make of it. If you are willing to contribute in a constructive manner, then I would happily support you in this.
i agree with alot of what i read .. i'd be interested in more vampyric music
If it's to do with members only using posts to level up then why not abolish posts being part of gaining status.
That way people wouldn't make such pointless threads and post pointless answers in order just to level up.
trouble,
I don't think that is what this thread is intended for, but is actually about coming up with new ideas, not preventing people from posting soley towards gaining status level.
I know but was just a random moment where I was thinking about the mascara section being RIA'D all the time. Just thought I'd bring it up. I'll ssh now.
Getting too long in the fang to read
RIP
