I know years ago it was believed the moon could make people go mad.. I was just curious to see if anyone thought that the moon infact has powers over a persons mood or state of mind.....

These types of questions are heavily based in superstition, lore, tradition, etc. So, I have not been able to find any sort of definative answer. I'm not sure if the cycles of the moon DO actually cause people to behave a certain way, or if people have the notion that they "should" act crazier, if that makes sense...

What I can say is, I actually have noticed that at my nightjob, people do seem to act more wild and there always seem to be more fights when there is a full moon. The security staff swears there is a cause and effect correlation between lunar cycles and behavior. I'm skeptical of alot of things, but I do believe that others strongly believe it.

I know a full moon makes me feel strange, and my cat behaves strangely during a full moon too. i dont bother to keep track of the phases of the moon, and i sometimes feel the effects of a full moon before i even know its a full moon. actually, the effect starts a day or two before the full moon, and sometimes lasts four days

The moon's gravity, whilst weak, still maintains an influence over the water in the human body, perhaps even the subtle changes of tide are also present within our bodies.

The full moon is when the gravity is at it's peak of influence, so people perhaps have more unsettled hormones at these times...

I'm thinking along the same lines as Stabb here. When you consider the effect the lunar cycle has on something as massive as an ocean, it's quite apparent that strong forces are at play. There are any number of factors that could be affected by the change in gravitational forces resultant from the lunar cycle. Along with the water molecules that make up the majority of our bodies, it's likely to have an effect on electromagnetic forces as well. This could cause subtle shifts in the firing of neurons in our brains. And as delicate as the operations that occur there, it seems very likely that they could be affected by the lunar cycle.

Both Stabb666 and Toiletduc make excellent points for the physical reasons I can only add that after 25 years in law enforcement, 1/2 of that on the night shift, There is no doubt in my mind or anyone else who works in law enforcement that the full moon makes people act odd and often wilder.

Patrick Moore once said the gravitational effect of the Moon on the human brain is no greater than if a pigeon landed on your head. dont know about Pat, but if a pigeon kept landing on y head, I'd certainly be pissed off!

karnstein,

Might it be that Patrick Moore doesn't consider how a pigeon landing actually in the brain, might feel...

I reckon that would be a mighty unhappy bird.

I would be too, with my feet all covered in someone's goo.

For many the phase of a full moon is seen as something like a charger for batteries. I was told that my pentacle should be "recharged" during the full moon if it is acting funny. My deck is left alone during the full moon. As for whether it has an effect on humans, perhaps we act strange because we are being recharged, being filled with a purer energy then during the waxing or waning moons.

The numbers seem to say it all. The police have seen the difference, hospitals see more birthes, women have their friend more often. Nature herself feels the pull and energy of the moon. Why is it that people tend to think that they are an exception to it all? Of course we feel the moon. We are not seperated from nature/the solar system but part of it.

The moon's orbit used to be much closer, and had a greater effect on humans. As of now, humans have become so disillusioned with themselves that they no longer need the gravitational pull of a stellar object to affect their state of mind. They do it themselves, and then whine when they're too stupid to realize the consequence of their actions.

When the moon is full, my energies are at a greater level naturally than just regular night time. If you were to ever fuse this boost of power with Halloween, I would have reached 100% of my possible power in this world. I may describe this as some sort of video game, but it is what I detect within myself to be true.

Actually, all creatures of darkness, be them vampire, lycanthrope, or something else that has roots to some sort of evil origin, are stronger during the Devil's Night, and in general the supernatural gets one night to throw its weight around (if it wanted to) before this world goes back to normal.

Call me a kook if you wish, but this is indeed the nature of the moon, and the night itself.

For me personally, I find that my energy levels increase and decrease naturally with the moons phases. I can sleep very little when the moon is waxing, up till it is full, and usually be ok, but when it starts waneing I find I need more sleep. The moon definitely affect other things as well, tides, animals, etc.

Like it was laready mention and I agree since i saw and notice it, that the moon affect the tide and all the water aroud the world, so therefore since we are 70% water, and mainly our hormones like testosterones which triggers violence and other reaction similar then logicly the moon affect our mind and personality wether we notice it or not.

Strigocia, while you are right, the word has many definitions:

lu‧na‧tic  /ˈlunətɪk/ [loo-nuh-tik]
–noun
1. an insane person.
2. a person whose actions and manner are marked by extreme eccentricity or recklessness.
3. Law. a person legally declared to be of unsound mind and who therefore is not held capable or responsible before the law.
–adjective
4. insane; demented; crazy.
5. characteristic or suggestive of lunacy; wildly or recklessly foolish.
6. designated for or used by the insane: a lunatic asylum.
7. gaily or lightheartedly mad, frivolous, eccentric, etc.: She has a lunatic charm that is quite engaging.

To sort of defend myself...

I am currently in the presense of a psych major. She states that this word, used in medical term, originated because of noted changes of people, during lunar activity. Though you won't find this at Dictionary.com, you can find it in books relating to the history of psychology.

The word lunatic absolutely comes from the latin root 'Luna', the name given to the moon.

Also known in Greek as Selene, ruler of the night.

It seems overwhelmingly obvious that there is a connection between the moon and peoples' state of mind.

In my psycology class in high school we discussed the effects the moon can have on a person. Now I'm starting to wish I had paied more attention in that class.. But.. I follow the cycles of the moon, and I must admit that the full moon does have a sort of calming effect on me, at least more so then when it's waxing or waning..

I happen to be an expert on lunacy. Im instilled with energy on full moons. They're a very pleasant time for me and a time for growth. The moon waning is a time for regrowth. (this is what I've found out least)

well if you look at the word..the root is luna the moon, I know that I get alittle more wild on full moons and when under moonlight, does it make me stark raving mad..no I think that it lunacy has do to do with more chemical imbalances in the brain that may manifest during a full moon due to the perception and belief that it should...we all know how far belief in something can get a person.
