I remember back in the day when I was one of the youngest people on VR, and now there's all these new people popping up! And some of them are 3 or more years younger than me! I feel so old, and I'm only 17!
So I came to the realization I understand what some of you "old" people are saying, there are too many kids on here! AND, it's creepy when they hit on 30 somethings or vice versa!
What do you guys think? Are there too many kiddles running around here? Do you think there should be an age limit?
I think that definitely no one under 13 should have access to this site. However, I have no problem with the younger members being here, as long as they act maturely and follow the rules of VR. That being said, you can't associate age with maturity, as I've encountered plenty of so-called "adults" who are worse than any "kid" on here, as far as manners, respect, and common courtesy are concerned.
i agree with cajome, you cant associate age with maturity, and the age limit is 13, plus ive noticed a lot of the younger users arnt really active much anyway.
It's extremely rare that I bother to rate profiles from under 16 year olds. The one or two that I have rated are because of the content , effort and time spent.
I REALLY dislike profiles by under 18s that start by saying that they are going to kill me , my family , my dog and my tv.
Even though it's their profile, I can't see them contributing in a positive way on VR.
I'm pretty sure there is an age limit and 13 is the minimum.
I joined when I was 14 or so and I was one of the youngest I knew about but man there are some younger peeps here now!
first off, sorry to everyone in the age groups mentioned, secondly, I think there should be an age limit to, but also, everyone should know there limitations or whatever, theres only so much someone can do on here, so if someone thats to young for you approaches you, be nice about it and tell them that there to young, a friendship is a friendship and an obsession is an obsession, if worst comes to worst you can always block them. I guess thats my 2 cents.
13 sounds like a good age limit, just don't make it any higher please because I enjoy spending my time here.
ye i think some things on here is not for the eyes of youger ones
well, i am a teenager technically buti agree that it's creepy if younger teens are hitting on 30 year olds. i think that the age limit should be what your mental age is, i see alot just sisgning up and starting a bunch of crap. this is NOT like high school (or middle school i guess in some casses) and though it's slightly funny to see them write about such trivial things; it is just that, trivial. even if you are 20 30 or w/e and you act 13 then it's just as bad. but there really should be an age limit, just b/c of some of the content. i think 15 or 16 should be the limit, unless you can prove that you are not going to act like a child.
jeez, i realize that sounds phony since i'm still technically a teenager (for a little bit anyways), but i don't know how else to say it. so i'm sorry if anyone takes offence especially if you happen to be a younger teenager, since i'm completely aware that there are mature teens out there, but i'm also very aware that there are many who are not.
"I REALLY dislike profiles by under 18s that start by saying that they are going to kill me , my family , my dog and my tv."
Curses! Now I don't know what to get you for your birthday...:P.
13 is a fair minimum. Honestly its tough to regulate not matter what, since people could just lie, but oh well.
Being 30, it does get hard to see where some people are coming from at times, but I do my best to put it in perspective. "What was *I* thinking about at 16?".
When I think of 'back in the day', the internet was text-based!
I don't think that anything a youngster would see here would be any worse than what they would view on television or see at the theatre. It would be the decision of a parent/guardian on whether or not a minor should be able to visit any website. A PG-13 rating for this one seems to be a good fit.
I approve that there is an age minimum require, a line needs to be drawn somewhere, as for the profiles of the youngones, well sadly I must agree with Sabre, most of them (not all but most) do just type stupidity or meaningless things, like already said. Some on th eother hand do a good effort and its nice to see that.
Since the profile is to represent one individual it is like a mirror, regardless of what others think, a profile is not menat to impress others but to impress oneself and the young one lack in this part, but I saw some that after a little while are getting the hang of it.
I agrees with most in this thread, many kids see worse on TV and in real life for that manner. I suppose some parents would have a problem with their kids seeing things here on VR, I leave it up to them to act accordingly. Like stabb said there is no way to be able to monitor and know who is telling the truth.
i was surpised at how much of the younger generation is on vr. but i also remember being younger adn getting mad when people acted like i was too young to know or understand anything. So even though i feel there are a lot of kiddies, i respect them just as much as those who are older than me. because i was there at one point too. adn some of them could probably use some guidance or jus an ear while they are going through the ridiculously difficult growing up process.
tho it scares me that there could be predators here, waiting for the kiddies. so that being said id say no one under 13 as well.
Sometimes , as happened recently , you can catch under 16s out.
In their sex/gender /age info they wrote that their age was 15 but then wrote in their profile that their age was 12.
VR was informed of the discrepancy and the profile went bye byes.
The other reason I don't rate under 16s, usually , is because at 42 years of age something innocent I might say might be taken out of context and trouble ensues. You have to be so careful these days.....
good thinking sabre. i never thought of it that way. it could be dangerous. i dont write personal things on the under aged profiles for that reason. i just rate, stamp and move on.
I agree with STABB.
Oh, wait, I'm supposed to put my own thoughts here!
While I am equally put off by the comments Sabre mentiond (F-Off, I'll kill you, etc.) I find they are more from the "Young Adult" newbies (17 - 20) Than from the younger crowd. Many of the younger members who bother to attempt to put up a meaningful profile, or post on the forums, are, in my opinion, mature for their age. I see no problem with the current 13 yo age limit. As others have stated many of them prove to act more mature than some of the "adults" here.
I do read and rate all new profiles, and I try to look out for some of the more naive younger members. I have sent several of them messages regarding what I though was too much personal information in their profiles, and the dangers of the internet. I have, all but once, gotten a "Thank You" in reply and they removed the personal info.
I guess I'm just showing my advanced years, and am overly careful, as I have a 13 year old!
Well im 17 and I rele dont care who gets on VR as long as there not popo faces about it...lol(popo face)
Well Sabre, maybe they're just out to kill T.V.s? I'm kidding of course.
I absolutley agree that some of the people in my age group are worse than the young ones. I'm just more worried about the younger ones because of sexual predators (pervos). I mean, but the time someone gets to be my age, they should have a pretty good understanding of what they're getting into ona site like this. But I don't know if all the younger ones understand that. Then they do put up personal information and such. Or if a pervo befriends them and lulls them into a false sense of security and then Bam, the next thing you know little such and such was abducted or whatever. And I won't lie, there have been times while I'm on this site and men send me very inappropriate things. It's annoying really, but I don't know how you stop it. It's not like they read profiles... I don't know.
Hmmm, I guess I had more to say on the subject.
Oh, and I do hope I'm not one of those with a bad "kill you, kill your family, kill your TV" profiles. I mean immature of course.
As far as the preditors go, I don't think that the children are in any more danger here than they are anywhere else online.
I can only hope that the parents of these 13 year olds are aware of what they are doing. Cancer and the other administrators do their best to keep a safe environment for the teenagers and keep an eye out for predators. Some like me, like to take teenagers under my wing to give them someone to talk to in case they are uncomfortable with a situation on here.
As for maturity, I have found on 14 year old female friend on here, has more maturity than some of the 20 somethings. Its due to the person and their experiences.
An idea I would suggest would be that it is compulsory to fill in the age / gender details in the 'info box' so VR are "covered ". If any investigation was conducted by authorities ( or VR themselves ) VR can be clear that it acted in good faith with the info the member supplied.
There is already an age limit as previously stated of 13. And yes the younger members don't seem to be as active as some of the older ones. I don't have a problem with them being on here. After all, some kids act like adults while some adults act like kids.
This is a good debate thing, my son is on here, he's 14 years young, i do keep my eye on him here and try to get him to do decent things and behave himself, if he does step out of line on here and i know about it then i will nag at him.
I also agree with the age limit, i have had a couple of 13 year olds message me and i had to tell them politely that i didn't feel comfy chatting with them, i also apologised about it to them, and wished them luck, and they were fine with that :)
More parents should be aware of what their children do. It is not VR's policy to "police" the kids, that is their parents job.
As for young members, I think VR is a good place for some of them to learn how to communicate in an adult fashion and potentially learn while having fun.
There are some excellent points made here and I am actually okay with the younger members too as others have said many of them are as mature as or more so than so-called adults. I will admit to being a bit more careful with what I say when speaking with younger members. I have never looked upon VR as a dating site so laughter is how I treat that stuff. I suspect the rules are in place to meet or exceed any laws regarding the youth on here. I trust Cancer to have taken care of that already. When you get right down to it many of the under 18 members are the ones most willing to try and make new friends here. I think we (the older adults) should consider being more willing to mentor the youngers ones until they find their way on VR.
Nightgame did you know House Eternal has an Adopt a Whelp page?
This I think would fit under that as well :)
I just think that even if an age limit is set for the site, it would be practically impossible to enforce it unless it were to become a pay only site which would then limit access to numerous users due to finances and would not be certain to stop all underage users either. I worry about some of the underage users, primarily female, that post about their breast size and what they like to do sexually as this is only making them easy prey for online predators. I don't know how that can be dealt with without putting limits on every user either.
There might be 13 year olds on here that are too lewd or there are 40 year olds hitting on 15 year olds... But at a certain point we have to realize this isnt a baby sitting place and to authenticate everyones age would be tiresome.
Furthermore, age is more than a number. There are plenty of mature minors on here and a good number of immature adults. Just because someone is 16 doesnt mean that they do not offer insight or desire to to help document everything vampire :)
Sometimes I well looking through the profiles here I do get to smile when I get to read some of our younger members stuff. Well I am sure it would warm the cockles of Dracula's heart really :) It is fun for me listening to them play in the vamp-box as they role-play heh.. kids, can't beat them they are fun, fun, fun! Btw, 17 isn't old! lol
Sometimes you see people here that have nudy pics in their profiles and things, they are not "kids" they are adults. Why can't everyone follow the rules?
Too few people look at the rules, especially the young ones. It certainly isn't VR's responsibility to baby-sit, not by any means. I like a lot of the younger members. I seem to have an easier time talking to them, since we're still in school, so I can relate to a lot of their issues. I like the younger crowd, I do. I just worry about some of them...
i think i agree with CAJOME
i had someone older than i act more childish to me than any of the younger ones
lol Raynne but they get more sophiscated at it. A lot of children would just say things to be "cool" and actually carrying them is a different matter. This is were parents come in, who should be vigilent for changes in their teenagers.
It's a bit like arguing for more oxygen in the atmosphere. You can complain, but things are set up how they are (probably with very valid reasons by the one in charge) and they are not going to change via vote.
I imagine that this could be more troublesome for those who are here 'on the make' but I don't care if I'm discussing music or movies or vampires or the supernatural with a 14 year old or a 40 year old so long as they can keep up.
I am 23 and I tend not to really be "friend" many younger kids under the age of 16. Not that I don't like them but age does bother me. I remember being that young and it freaks me out lol...
Anyway I know what you mean. I remember joining sites at 16 years of age and know at 23 I feel old. I remember being on Bolt for years and finding myself look back at what I did and say "OMG what was I thinking".
Though I think younger kids are easily getting online these days and it is scary. A lot of them are naive and don't understand the danger of the internet.
Yeah that's exactly it too! They don't know what they're getting themselves into when it comes to internet things. Parents need to teach their kids about how dangerous it can be! I don't think they have to know every single thing the kid does, that's assuming the parent taught them to be smart about online things...
Of course there's no substitute for good parenting. One hopes for the best there and assumes that it not be our job to police someone else's child but I'd also hope that we not make every interaction both online and RL segregated by age in order to protect foolish children from predatory adults.
Yeah, I think there should be a age limit(And I think there is) Just because of the Content and some of the language that is used, but there are also those immature people that have to stir everything up and act really immature.
as long as the limit isn't above 15 I'm fine. and I personally try really hard not to be immature and I try to be respectful to everyone on here. it really depends on what kind of guidance you give the younger members.
I could be wrong of course but that's my small opinion.
Unfortunately so many parents have basically become little more then breeders these days. They give birth then do little more to help the child to develope. Sad state of the world we live in.
that is also true.. but it's not just the parent's fault. Even though it IS thier Duty and what they should do.
But it is also Society. A parent can't shut out a child from the world because it is corrupt and wrong. if they do that, then the child becoms an outcast and they will most likley have a Harder start in life than if thier parents had let them Do whatever.
They shouldn't shut their child away from society but they should impose limits, should monitor how they interact with society and should teach the skills necessary to help protect them from the mass amount of human garbage that they will come in contact with as they grow up who enjoy taking advantage of the fact that they are innocent.
I think that by the age of 13 that one would have ones value systems largely in place. IIf maturity is defined as "Distance from self centeredness", and IIIf this is a place for the dissemination of knowledge; then it makes no sense to restrict who can join due to ignorance or age if one cannot unilaterally weed out the immature and dissolute.
Even though i am young myself, I feel there should be no age limit for some of the younger members act more mature than the older ones. Why should we stereotype with age? Younger members can provide a different perspective and even the younger members can teach you something. Age is no limit, and it shouldnt be on vr. If you dont like them, dont talk to them.
I am rather torn about the age limit. My daughter is 14 and is mature enough to put a page up here but there are so many kids on here that are not mature enough. I have been hit on by boys the ages of 15-17 and I am 35. Since my email is listed...I have gotten naked pictures of some of them in my email...that is not what I am here for. I don't like the fact that if one of the kids parents see that they have sent pics to me, I cuold get into trouble. I have no interest in really even talking to anyone under 18 and thats pushing it.
I definitely agree with a lot of people...there needs to be an age limit. I think 13 would be good, but that's still pushing the envelope.
I think 13 is a good age I have kids and my 2 little ones have no interest in investing the time in here but my 13 year old thinks it is great to have a place to belong where she can meet people who think like she does and learn a few things at the same time as well as have a place to display her art that she does. It really is about maturity and having a creative mind that determine how well suited you are for the site and more parents should be involved enough to either let there kids on a site or not.
Yeah, and bing a young person, I completely agree with the idea of bringing in new ideas and such. However, the young people emailing ppl. nudie pics, or the 13 or 14 year old girls flirting continuously with 30 something, hell even 20 something guys is ridiculous! These people are not bringing any valid information to the site, and they certainly aren't improving our little social group... I feel bad for saying stuff like that about people my age, because I KNOW not all of us are like that. I like to think I'm one of the mature ones, which Goddess only knows if I am or not. I guess it would be nice if there were a better way to police the immature people on here. But I realize there is really no good solution so...
The thing that really gets me are the younger people and older who participate in dirty things on this site. I don't care that it isn't real, old guys and young girls just should not be having sex, in ANY form! I sound old!
Okay... ?
Which reminds me, if anyone checks out my profile for whatever reason, would you let me know if it's one of those "I'm going to kill you..." ones? That would really suck!
stab made a good point here. though this site has manyyoungsters, they can always lie about their age... we can do nothing with those people who lie about theirselves.
Okay, I admit, I occasionally bite the cute boy, but only if he's around my age! And if my pictures turn out sexy, I didn't mean them to! I hate cameras, I really do! And yeah, with my first account I did look for the cute guys and all that. But I was... 14, I think! Now I come to talk to my friends, and learn!
Well I do be lieve tha there should be an age limit maybe 16 or 17 but i do think that 13 is a little too young
I think that there are a lot of 13 year olds around here, and I don't really talk to a lot of them, I try and stay with the "older people"....mainly the guys as they are what I prefer to hand out with anyway
I think the majority of my friends on VR are guys, and yes some are older, but they aren't pervos! To the best of my knowledge anyway. I don't know, I guess overall people need to learn how to function properly in a society. Pervos should quit being pervos, and the younger ones who are dumb need to wizen up a bit. I never realized wizen was a real word! ROCK ON!
i do find having 13 yr olds etc on the site unnerving.its just a case of being vigilant in what you say to them.
I guess, we should remember back to when we were 13 or 14, didn't we all feel like adults once we reached our teenage days? As the Lyssa says there are some of these so called kids at 13 and 14 making much sense than adults.
thats tru emerald. there are also many older adults who act much younger than some of these teens. age is but a number.
This thread has really continued! I like it.
So many good points have been brought up, and it leads me to think about the 'generation' idea. It seems like a generation is getting shorter. People 5 years younger than myself had the 'net in high school. It's a foreign idea to my psyche. 18 and under, provided there was net accessible in the house, have been using it since the onset of puberty most likely.
I'd have gotten myself into trouble!
if some one has something entertaining or intelligent to say i don't care their age
Truly I don't think age has any bearing at all here.Immature people come in any age and size. But lately the general hate atmosphere in the new profiles is getting to be a bit much.As I had posted just a few lines after this thread:hate does not equal vampire or gothic people.
I personally enjoy the refreshing view of younger people. They're souls have yet to be crushed by the working world :P
i notice that young people's profiles pretty much say the same thing... a lot.
i probably was just the 'same as everyone else being different' myself when i was young, so i can't hold it against them... it's all about just finding out who you are i try to give witty comments on their profiles that try to get them to respond. i think most just ignore me though.
some people do very well being truly themselves when they are young, but most are molded by their peers. they will grow out of it ;] or at least i hope.....
there should be.I am tired of getting hit on.it's stupid!
they send a message and say "your so pretty, wanna go out?" and i don't even know them and they only send one message.I think they youngest on here is 10.idk it's just way to creepy and i'm sick of it.*shivers*
i bet your block list is nice and long :)
alas it will always be that certain people will only be interested in that Rosalia... mainly you just have to ignore the ones that are and find the people who aren't out there just to be perverts :)
the thing is I think they are getting smart with me and forming little kid groups and trying to attack.haha forbid that would happen.I would have to....oh you won't go there.but yes my block list is actually quite long.and it only seems to be the children....and some older perverts.
Exactly... just go with the people who rub you the right way, and block those who really offend or bother you.
well i'm glad it hasn't discouraged you too much
it's too bad people can't control themselves and hopefully the young ones will grow out of it
and like FortunateFool said.. there is a feeling you get about the people who are here for more than that... a good friendly feeling and that makes it worth it :)
I think that's probably why i'm still here.because people seem to be nice and not foolish little runts.lol..well at least not all the time
*grins* i know exactly what you mean ;]
i've met some very awesome and inspired people here and that makes me keep coming back for more ;]
Definately!
There are tons of people here across the globe I'd probably enjoy hanging out with.
I haven't invoked the 'block' button yet, but then again I'm male.
hmm well i would have to agree lots of younger kids are joining but i see no problem if they're here to learn thats one of the main reasons i joined the site but i do agree that a 13 year old hitting on a 30 year old is a big issue...
agreed, it's not the ones that are here because they are interested in the site, what it represents or want to learn, it's the ones that cause problems just to do it or looking jsut for sex
of course that doesn't have to be true of just young ones either ;]
i think in general it's just the people who behave that way
agreed. It's quite annoying for people to come online and notice they have more then 10 messages from perverts.quite annoying indeed.
To be honest, I think having an age limit is pointless, because - as it's already been pointed out - people can just lie anyway.
I do agree that age is not everything regarding maturity. Yes, it's true that there are many younger people who are much more mature than a lot of people in their 30s (or older!).
With that said, however, I do understand the viewpoints of those who are becoming irritated with some of the younger members of the site. I've had a few "hitting on" messages sent to me as well as a few offensive and inappropriate ones too. When this has happened, I just politely explained to them that I don't appreciate those kind of things (or ignore them completely) and fortunately I had no more trouble from them.
Personally, I have no problem with younger members adding me to their list or wanting to talk, especially if they are severely depressed or going through a very difficult time and need someone to talk to. To be honest, many have done so, and that's perfectly fine - fortunately, the rude ones seem to be few and far between. So I don't think it would be entirely fair to judge one group of people based on the actions of a few.
On the flip side, however, I think that if people - of any age - want to be here, they should have to prove that they can be respectful to the other members and not cause trouble. This is why I agree with the 10 message limit rule for new members. While it may be irritating to have a limit for the first little while, it is a good way to help try and "weed out" the troublemakers.
yeah the status system and the benefits you get from leveling up help prove who is here for what
i think it's a great system
it can be a little intimidating being new here, but those who are here for the right reasons of any age prove it through their actions
there is a big difference between having fun and being disruptive and immature and you are right that age doesn't have to have anything to do with that
Vamp3434, you aren't female hun. So you don;t get pestered half as much as the younger females do.
Rosalia, I agree ENTIRELY! I haven't used my blocking privileges yet, and I hope I never have to. I mainly just ignore those people, or if they message me, I send them really impersonal almost rude messages back. Just to get my point across.
Yeah, it's the new profiles (old or young) that treat VR like a dating site which really bother me. They say nothing about themselves other than what they look like and the kind of person they're looking for. That isn't the point of this site!
in defense of a few that start out that way, i think most other sites that can be compared with this one ARE all about dating and sex, so i can forgive those who start out that way, then realize what it's about and change all that.
some never get the point and that has nothing to do with age either
there's much more to this than a lot of new people realize... i hung around for about a day just looking at things before i went and registered.. and i don't belong to any other sites like this
*Laughs* You may be right, Lyssa. I didn't mean that it's something that happens all the time, just every now and then.
LOL Vamp3434, you got it easy. You aren't a girl or a pervo!
Yeah, I can see what you're saying. But people should really look around before they just post stuff like that up. They need to look around and figure out what the site is about, like you did. I think this has turned more into a thread of people just being pissed at dumb people...
"it's the ones that cause problems just to do it or looking jsut for sex"
But...thats what I'm here for!
Yah. I've had female identities online (not for any nefarious purpose, but to hide) and it was a FAR different experience.
Between that and getting hit on by older gay men at clubs (I wear vinyl sometimes), I treat women a heck of a lot different than I did 10 years ago :P.
Overall my friends range in age from 12 to 60 (IRL, not here so much) because of the nature of the martial arts I practice. I've known people who are more mature at 10 than others at 30, which seems impossible until you see it. It has to be the same here.
i suppose i should clarify 'just sex' i mean those who are lecherous and the stalking kind... YOU KNOW the ones ;]
there is nothing wrong with someone looking for a little adult contact ;]
i think it's interesting that you have changed how you treat women because you've had a chance to see the other side :)
very cool in my opinion
lol, Lyssa: Whew! I was getting worried I had sounded conceited before or something (believe me, I'm not!), lol.
I agree with what Raynne did, too: To be honest, it was close to a week before I actually made an account here (just looked around here and stuff), and I don't really have any desire to belong to any more sites, either (I'm here all the time, anyway, lol).
oh and trouble of the right kind is never bad either ;] just those that want to ruin other's fun... for fun
hehehe vamp3434 it's so weird isn't it?
i'm not the kind of person who gets involved with sites much.. even if i do join. but there is something about this one... even with the people who try to ruin it, there is something GOOD here
i'm here all the time too ;]
It's the people who push their adult fun on people who aren't adults! you could at least ask first. that's my point.
Agreed, Raynne: I guess it's like many people say, VR's an addiction, lol.
You're right: Even with the troublemakers (which you find anywhere) there's something very cool and special about VR : )
There are some really great people on this site.. and I am sure more awesome folks with join over time as well... Who knows they might already be here as whelps or lower levels and they just havent come out of their shell enough.
As to getting annoying messages from others... the lack of personal pictures i think has really help in that department. i cant be objectified if i dont put up a picture of the object :P
Lyssa you are SO right
i think that kind of stuff should be reserved for people who know each other better anyway
i dislike strangers in general doing that
but yes, they SHOULD at least ask first
yep meeper, i agree with that.
it took me a while
actually it was the friendly people from higher levels that made me feel comfortable that drew me out :)
so i'm sure there are many just like me
