Are vamp movies demeaning to vampires?

I don't think they are, but some of them have too much cliche material in them.

Yes in some ways and some movies (Count Duckula),

No in other ways and in other movies (Interview with A Vampire)

I don't believe so... Underworld is a fantastic movie, and just tells a story of what some people believe to be the case.

With the greatest respect, I agree that underworld is a great movie, but I don't think it shows anything that most people think is the case.

The vampire / werewolf battle ... OK. But running gun battles with UV ammunition, arsenals of weapons, martial arts and frozen master vampires ... naaaaaaa

Of course they are not demeaning to vamps. If anything vamps should be pleased that Hollywood would even produce a vampire movie.

No just made potrayed them as pure evil and blood thirsty, Underworld proves different and way better than the old cult classics.

you have to admit though... sometimes they have some serious cliches.... like the whole stake through the heart thing... or the garlic.

I don't know, the media seems to be demeaning to everything these days.

I figure it's best not to concentrate or worry about those things. Just educate yourself more with the actual facts, not just about vampires, but about everything you see in the media. Question their word, find your own answers.

vampire movies are to cliche, some of them are demeaning i think in a way but most of them i think are really good...

most movies are just made for entertainment and I seriously doubt many producers believe in vampyres are werewolves probably not even ghosts

Hollywood is merely cashing in on the folklore and myth of vampires. I have not done extensive research on the subject, but it would be my guess that the sensational stories existed way before the modern day sang and psy vampires.

I pose this question to everyone, would you be a vampire if you had never seen a movie, read a book, or heard of there legends? Could the modern day vampires exist without them?

Movies are entertainment. If you look at anything with a powerful enough microscope, you will wind flaws. With rare exception Hollywood doens't make attempts to make light of any subject. Vampirism included.

Unless you count 'Vampire in the Hood'

I don't think they are at all....at least not most of them. I think they help the people who don't believe in anything other than what they can see with their own eyes to be open to new possibilities.

In answer to your question, Dame, I feel that yes, if a person truly is vampiric, they will still be vampiric even if sheltered and shielded from all references to the culture. I just feel that they would have a harder time defining what it is they feel, and may ultimately make them feel like more of a social pariah, because they wouldn't know that there are other people out there like them.

In some like 'Dawn to Dusk' , i cant recall them all they are good, but just show the vampires as blood thirsty animals. In 'Interview with a vampire' and 'Queen of the damned' and 'Underworld they actually tell the vampire society as well, which makes it awesome. There is some substance to it.

There is a difference to real vampires and vampires mentioned on film. True vampires are not really "vampires" but people that emulate the traits of what vampires are seen as in some sort of way. The need for blood as an energy source and so on. So in all retrospect what is seen in the movies is fantasy just like Harry Potter and the idea of witches is that of fantasy. A real witch is a human who studies magic and uses it in some form. With Harry Potter they are an entirely different race.

So I don't think it does. If people take offense to it surely doesn't understand the diffrence.

Most usually are. There are very few that have been done tastefully. I like alot of the Masterpiece Theatre movie's. They are very on key with things.~NFA

as i posted in another forum i myself don't think hollywood is demeaning to vampires because if they film them the way they was no one would want to go to see them it would be so boring so i do believe that they do try to keep it as true as they could with the touch of a fiction to keep our interest in the movie

eh... personally I think most movies are soley meant to entertain you so I don't really think they're demeaning... I mean sure you could take it that way... Everyone has their own opinions about the matter apparently, but just remember most movies aren't supposed to be factual. Most movies are made to entertain so they'll get great ratings and make the director and actors loads of cash!

There's a difference between Hollywood movies and actual vampirism.

The Hollywood martial arts gun blazing and silver stake throwing movies are just producers selling their work. Just because a movie has a certain topic doesn't mean it has to go by facts or tradition.

Personally I don't like them for the simple reason that I just don't do mindless action movies nor science fiction.

Most vampyre movies are done quite well & amazingly accurate. If Hollywood wants to keep on producing vampyre movies I know that there will always be an audience for them.

I can't see how Hollywood movies are 'incredibly accurate' and you're the first individual I've ever heard say that.

Personally, I've never seen any hybrids jumping off buildings while on a vendetta hunt or perhaps U.V laser gun fights in subways or even cows flying across the moon while 'vampiric gargoyles' swarm the town centre.

But maybe you just live in a different world then I do!

Considering that I'm not a mythical/fictional vampire with friends getting turned to dust every time I turn around, I don't see how vampire movies could possibly be seen as demeaning to me.

Highly entertaining, which is their purpose, yes. Demeaning? Again, I say no.

Movies are for entertainment purposes and the only reason for society to feel better about themselves is to exaggerate the truth about vampires. They know we exist. They want to make something so horrific, so demeaning that they will feel better knowing that somehow they frighten others away from it. Vampirism is a lifestyle not something to be made fun of. I have seen most of them...sometimes they glamorize it and other's look like they look down upon it. It confuses me sometimes. One hand I love to watch the movies because it has vampires in it and on the other hand I hate the exaggeration. Again for entertainment purposes not a learning tool.

Some could be considered deameaning. Thena again, poeple enjoy when something is being slandered or made fun of. That is why there are all of the spoof movies now a days. So of course vampires cannot be an exception. Movies are for enjoyment...

I dont know about vampires as a whole.But certain fictional characters like Count Dracula have been disgraced in some movies...
I saw blade trinity and it was just aweful.Absolutely disgusting.Dracula is supposed to be a charming fellow.In that movie he was a complete ass(Pardon me for the language).I felt like catching the director and strangling him.I study movies.Its my passion.And blade trinity is not worth to be called a good movie....

I have to say that I agree with the statement "it's only a movie". They are fictional unless otherwise stated and are for pure entertainment purposes. If you are looking for educational films, then it's time to check out the documentaries.

I suppose it just depends on the movie, some people like to make vampirisim out to be a big joke.

I think that Underworld is demeaning to vampires because in one part a vampire has a reflection and vampires are not supposed to have reflections.

I wouldnt say demeaning although some of the more modern vampire movies dont interest me much. I prefer, movies like Dracula with Gary Oldman and Interview with a Vampire

I think one of us should make a vampire movie.At least we'll do justice to it.

They are just stories nothing more. They demean everyone in movies from women, to witches, religions, vampires are just part of a long list.

Demeaning to human vampires? Not at all- they were intended to be fiction and should be judged and understood on that basis.

It depends on which movie one is watching. I think older movies like the original Count Dracula was very demeaning. However, the movie depicted from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles "Interview with a Vampire" was not demeaning in any way. It almost romanticized the vampire in many ways. I believe that vampires of today can closely relate more to the "interview with a vampire" vampires' humanitarian points of view, rather than the Dracula depiction of what they thought a vampire was.

some of the B vampire movies do but I think the modern vampire movies glamorize vampirism.

Demeaning.....no I really don't think so. Some may be rather droll than others spoofing on the Vampire genre but if vampires lose their sense of humor in this day and time not much is left except to deal with human fears and hates.

I'm okay with all of the vamp movies that I've seen in fact each one I see makes me love them more.

I liked the different way that Dracula 2000 looked at the creation of Dracula...I thought that connecting him with Judas was interesting.(even though it was a little campy...lol)

I loved the melodramatic way he was portrayed in VanHelsing...very funny

Bram Stokers Dracula made him sexy in a dark dramatic way

and on and on....they all add a little something to the image of vampires...

well I wouldnt say demeaning .. More a little misleading .. But thats what sells and hollywood is all about what sells and if we the public buy into it and watch, then they'll keep making what sells ..

The key is to just have an open mind. As with any other area of life, everyone is able to freely pick and choose what they "like". Cliches are hard to avoid, but this IS Hollywood we're talking about.

Yes and No
I mean the majority of people out there who go to see these movies, are going for the sheer enjoyment of it.
But I think that such misconceptions that are created in these films, hinder the progression from ignorance to information.

in my opinion, movies do portray vampires as being worse than what they really are. i know a few people from this site and they are the nicest vampires i have ever met. and the movies portray them as being evil and malicious beings, but in reality they are not.

I really like vampire movies and I dont think in my opinion that they down grade vampires they just want to make them look like they are something to be feared

You have to take movies for what their worth - not much. It is not that they get vampires wrong, they get almost everything else wrong.

Pirates of the Caribbean has nothing to do with real pirates.

They can't even get the Silver Surfer story right - from what I am told.

movies tend to give a darker perception of things but have come to grow the numerous population of vampire lovers everywhere thought through these movies they find them fascinating, sexual, interesting, dark, devious and all of the sorts powerful..beginners only have a small amount of knowledge on their existance.Books tend to show their sexuality, movies show their power, sexuality and their vulnerabilities. All and all very fascinating.

Hollywood is synonymous with exaggeration... The truth is never as interesting as the overrun imaginations of people. Let them glamourize us, sexualize, envy us and fear us. that would not offend me...

Vampire movies were probably created by vampires themselves. Creating such movies people wouldn't believe in the reality of vampires really existing.

I think that they may romanticize it more than anything. Not everything about vampires is as sexy as Hollywood makes it out to be. On the other hand, they promote such things and who are we to criticize free promotions?

I'm sorry to say it, but c'mon "Vampire in Brooklyn" was a completely demeaning mockery. Granted some movies are helping to spread Vampire lore, but most just plain suck.

Not really. Partly because each movie runs off its own mythos. And sometimes (scratch the mostly.) Idea's aboutVampires are recycled. So in a way they are, but mostly their not.

Vampire Clan...based on a true story, good film ideas but not used to its full potenial! Could have been abit better but still a good watch!!

i think vampire in brooklyn is good for what it is.... a satire. jus like sean of the dead. no its not anything close to real vamps, but it was quite the comedy.
