Its been said we hold our own destiny in our hands. Do you think this is true or are there other factors that determine what our destiny is.? and if so What?
I believe we are guided and gifted. That said, what we chose and how we develop what we are given is up to ourselves.
We dont hold destiny in our own hands, but there is a great factor involved aswell...Our lives are set on two different paths, its free will that allows us to choose which path/option we take....but destiny already knows which one we're going to pick...we can try & fight destiny, sometimes we can change our destiny, sometimes we cant!
We make are own destiny, but are indeed guided on the way. And the destiny we make, is partly because of choices in life.
I beleive we are in charge of our own detiny, the choices we make path our way
Your Destiny is shaped by the choices you make through your life.
we hold it in the sens that the choices we made will direct it towards one of our pathe and the ending of this path.
This why we kind dont have 1 desteny but many, it is up to us to direct it and to walked it.
look at a map sometime notice there are many ways to get where you want to go our life is alot like that we have control over how we get there not really where we are going
I believe everyone has a destiny that is preordained , however, the path that leads the way, is of your own choosing.
I really think destiny is what you make it. There are way to many roads to take to have them only lead to one destiny. Like what if your destiny was to life till you were 90 and have invented some cure for the common cold or something if you kill yourself in your 20's that is the destiny that you have made yourself and would go against a preordained one.
i agree.....
destine is what you make is... every little crossroads has like a preplaned path like to it.
many roads...tooo many to count
I believe that we completely control our own destiny and fate. Every choice we make changes what our future will be like and has an impact in what becomes of our lives. Only we determine what our choices are and what we do with them.
I think we have a predetermined destiny, but we can still make the decision to stray from that path at any point in our lifetime.
I belive that the choice we make dictate the life we lead, but our future already knows our choices
I do not in any way shape or form believe in destiny. Life is chaos - in chaos there is definite order. You cannot have order without chaos or vice versa - and with open eyes enough, you can see that there really is no difference between chaos and order.
Likewise, with open eyes, you see that there really is no difference between destiny and free will. Since there is no traveling back in time to change the present or future, everything you do had to happen. If it had happened any other way you would not be who you are today. That said - you do everything on your own. There is no *destiny* chosen for you - unless of course, you think so, and sit reading a glass orb all day instead of getting out and changing your life around for the better.
Certainly, though, in chaos since there is underlying order wrapped around it all (maybe the ultimate revolution is conformity?) there are things that tend to happen . As chaos unfolds, we begin to see patterns evolve - as chaos unfolds, we begin to see the order. We generally use this order to help determine the paths we take and the choices we make.
We all have destiny, it might not be set in stone. But we can adjust how it turns out. We have the ability to pic what path over all and adjust other things.
Think as destiny as clay you can shape it as you will, but once you get it set into a shape, it is stuck that way.
Ok , so what if you "would have" lived till your 90's and prehaps invented a cure of a disease....but you killed yourself inyour 20s...so what if...obviously it was your destiny...knowone would have ever known what you may or may not have accomplished. The only thing that may have any impact is if you actually DID find a cure for a disease or whatever..and in some way traveled back in time and killed yourself..then that influecne what would have been your destiny.
Foreverseeking then your destiny is to make a temporal mess. Which is a different thread all together...
:) Yes it would be wouldn't it. Still , even if destiny can be influenced by a path you may choose , it would only be a detoured path from the evevidable or what may have been.
I do believe we "hold out own destiny in our hands," but that isn't true for one person alone. There will always be other factors involved, such as someone elses "destiny". We each make out own decisions based on what we think is best for ourselves. Should someone else choose something that directly affects your life or you "destiny," that matter is not in your hands, but in thiers.
So much for trying to make that uncomplicated. Lol.
DA ,
Your point is a good point and a tough point all at the same time.
This is a wonderful thread with a lot of meaning ful opinions.
i think our destiny is set out for us
but we can help guide it along with the choices we make and we can change it to a certain amount but the main is set a certain way and that is it
I as we all do get to a point in life where it looks like a train crash … I look back and can see where on my path I took routs that led to my demise … I then think where do I want to be in life and avoid the error routs I took before as I move forward on the path of life .. changing it as I go.
I do notice just before a crash everything seems predictable like a premonition sort off, I predict easy and im so familiar with the events happening I can even fill in the words I just cant stop it …..
Then when I change the route and do the opposite of what I should life becomes a mystery again and gets good like I have given fate the slip.
Yes we do, granted with free will we choose the paths we follow.
I agree with the majority on this one. We have set things that are destined to happen, but the way we get to those things is entirely up to us.
I believe in fate and that our lives are pretty much planned out for us when we are born, but that doesn't mean that we can't help make certain things happen. There are some things that we must do for ourselves.
we are on the old predetermination versus free will argument aren't we? even scientists and psychologists are in two camps. some say that even our wishes and desires are predetermined by circumstances and environment, so is there really such thing as free will? maybe free will is an illusion.
well, i look at it logically. i am sentient - i am self aware, therefore i must accept the existence of self awareness.
secondly - i believe i have free will.
Why?
if there were no such thing as free will, there would be no need for the concept or belief in free will, because whether we believed in it or not, our actions would still be the same. a belief in free will serves no logical purpose, there fore there is no circumstance by which we would develop, or be given this belief. ergo - free will must exist.
Free will acts as a random element, which will in some way shape destiny - even if only in a small way.
so though i think there are streams of events that make a certain outcome more or less likely to happen, i believe we have the ability to control it, at least to some degree.
some people say it is black and white - either one way or another. but it isnt, it is full of shades of grey. if i should fall out of a window, it is a strong likelihood that i will travel in a downward direction, possibly against my will. this does not mean that i do not have free will, just that my fate is subject to the laws of nature.
if you would like to delve further into this, you must become as insane as i.
that was well said karnstein
it makes me really think about the other direction now
I think that we can at least influence our destiny based on decisions we make, as others here have stated.
It might be true to a degree, but how often has the outcome been soley due to your own actions? Often, as with me, outside forces, some call it chance, have made me turn left instead of right. Changing the course of my direction...
I don't think it's mapped out.... I think there are plans to a certain extent and the outcome of your life depends on the choices you make.... if you choose A instead of B then your life plan changes to fit that but it is constantly changing since everyday is a choice.... However I do think some things will happen no matter what choice you make....
I belive strongly in destiny so I can t agree that we can influence our destiny the way we want it...often when good or bad things happen I feel that s the way it had to happen...
I don't believe in destiny. If destiny were true, then I could just sit around and let everything happen, coz it would be destined to happen that way.
Sadly, it is not so, for we must give our hard labour to make things go the way we choose them to. This proves to me that there is NO destiny. :)
My theroy is we set our own destiny. If not then our lives would be so complacted.
Destiny is written from the day our soul is born when we were still fetuses. We have to be all eyes and mind and souls open to see and follow our written path. I am following it and the joy that i am having is supreme.
Heard one story about a guy that ran into a deer with his car. Both died. Someone had his chart done and it showed that the two were destined to meet. How exactly this was done, I don't know but...most strange.
I believe that we do decide our own destinys. To an extent. I think we are given our gifts to help us on our way and that they are a way of deciding what our destiny is.
We make our own destiny, every time we make a choice we can change our destiny...
I think we do control our destiny as the saying goes it is your life you do what you want with it and the truth is that I believe that to be a true statement.
The constant struggle between destiny and free will...rages on for eternity
I believe we are the keeper of our own destiny as it is the choices we make in life and the people we allow in our lives that effect the outcome of any given day. I believe we are gifted with special abilities that may hinder or promote the outcome of our destiny such as the ability to sing may lead to a career in music and no financial woes, but an inability to control you rspending may lead you to a reversal of fortune and your gift may them be your curse.
We come to this plane to learn what is yet unknown to us. Our destiny is planned and it is through our choices that the degree of completion of our lesson is acheived.
I confess I didn't read every post here I wanted to to just post. Without getting into my personal details I had something happen and at that very moment I decided that I wanted to change my life. I did immediately.
I changed EVERTHING.
You are in charge! You make it happen. I did.
good point NipsxNxKisses but if we are in charge of all our destiny then why would you need to change your whole life in the first place
you would not of chose a road that made you have to change your whole life in the first place then
I feel that my destiny is always changing yet always the same(which is what one of my tatoos stands for). For example: I will be a mother and a wife and live my life to help people and die on a certain day... blah blah blah, however with each day that passes I meet different people and see different things that cause me to change myself a little. I believe your destiny can change if you grow and if you choose to grow.
i use to think that we all had our own destiny, but if this is true then how can it be called destiney if we ourselfs can not control it???
Darn. I misspoke.
I think we're missing something important here.
I think we're making an illogical comparison.
This is going to be long, if you're interested:
I think we have free will.
I think that everything that happens was meant to happen, and once something happens (since we can't time travel yet) it was meant to happen. So, if things were meant to happen, and what happens was meant to happen, I believe in destiny.
Now, from the free will perspective, let's just think about our own minds since it's the only thing we can really refer to concerning the mind and time and destiny. Everything else could be a lie. So, concerning your own mind, do you, or do you not in some way shape or form make choices in everything you do? Choosing to wake up, or shower, or eat for example. Was it your *destiny* to go to the grocery store and buy some eggos? Or could you just have easily chosen grits? I understand that doesn't seem like a fair argument, especially to the more "serious" occultists who follow destiny. Whenever you came across your first reference to witchcraft (should you not have been raised in it), you could have just as easily chosen not to look into it. As a matter of fact, if things in your life had gone differently, you might have easily tossed any reference to witchcraft aside, at least the first time it was introduced to you. For whatever reason, you made a very distinct choice (if indeed, i am referring to your situation - otherwise, general you) to "go down that path." You certainly didn't have to. And at any moment you could turn away. You could (if you wanted) change your name, dye your hair, get a new wardrobe, sell your belongings and home, and move across the planet, make up a story and start over. My point is, I think there's a very important distinction here to be made between what actually happens, and what you choose.
Isn't it egotistical to think that destiny, "the inevitable or necessary fate to which a particular person or thing is destined,(dictionary.com)" can be shaped by our feeble attempts? Let me put that another way. Imagine a funny old movie, with Father God (humor me) and child Man. Man goes out and snoops in father God's notes discovering that Man was destined to be a wood chopper, and infuriated and rebellious, decides to go be a rock star instead. Father God laughs and says after Man dies, "That was your destiny after all. what a fool to think I would let you see your destiny, so that you would lazily accept and not push forward!"
Similarly, should we ever think we are "wandering," or "going the wrong way," first make sure you're not being dumb. If your family is dying, move away from places filled with civil war. If your pets keep dying, remember to take them to the vet and feed them. If people suddenly don't like you, make sure you don't give them dirty looks first, back up off their koolaid, and remember to be kind to everyone in case you 6th degree offended someone without knowing it (if that sort of thing bothers you). Secondly , whatever happens, happens! You can't change the past (yet). Accept your path as you have traveled it so far as it was meant to be - for, by nature, if destiny were to have it any other way, it would have been that way! Whatever you end up becoming or being, everything in your life contributed in every way to that existence - but nothing could have predicted it (save sheer luck - which i'm not entirely against), and if that's what happens, having done anything in your life differently would have *probably* completely changed your situation.
Call it chaos theory, butterfly effect theory, but I don't think we realize how much a difference it makes if you get off the computer now, 5 minutes ago, or the next instant. Every little thing could completely and weirdly effect your reality. Isn't this why so many wiccans and some other pagans make such a big deal about being careful?
Now, like I said earlier, *I* don't believe in destiny, bt if you did, or if I did, it wouldn't change the nature of destiny. Likewise, if you believe in the God of the Bible (which contradicts itself), it's egotistical to think you can change *that* god into your god. Your god, should have changed it from the various denominations interpretations, is completely different. This same example applies to Destiny. It is like a deity. You can twist it into meaning what you want it to mean. Destiny is a philosophical concept that is difficult for the average person to grasp (along with a host of of other religious and philosophical concepts.... hence, conflict?). You can't logically change it to mean whatever you want. It means what ever happened in the past was meant to happen, and everything that is happening now and happens in the future is meant to happen.
Should anyone tell you that something is destined to happen, and you need to protect that destiny, and you take action, and that destiny is carried through - would it have been destiny if you had failed or neglected it? If it had simply not happened, would the destiny gods come after you for ruining their plan? I doubt it. I think you got suckered into thinking you were a god. Should it not have happened, I think that would have just as genuinely been the earth's destiny.
From this perspective, it does not matter what you do. Whatever you do was meant to happen. So long as you carry it out and the actions, steps, thoughts, whatever, are complete - that was meant to happen. You do in that sense hold your destiny in your hands. No one else can change what you do to shape your destiny.
However, they can change the initial conditions - just like you unknowingly everyday change initial conditions for other people.
I hope this isn't getting too long, but a good answer never was short. So someone else told me. I need to bring up a few more points.
First, I do not think that from the time you leave the womb you consciously choose everything to make your life what you want. Besides the fact that our cognitive abilities have not developed that much prowess as such an early age, once that prowess is developed (say now for example) we still do not know which action will bring about the best things for ourselves or what we want.
Second, there does seem to be some sort of consensus reality that we are popped inside to, this existence we're in now, it seems to have a lot of rules and things that generally tend to happen, that we can't easily change. With a lot of discipline and hard work, so the saying goes, you can do anything. But on average, if you do certain things, other certain things will happen. This can be as simple to buying someone a gift and them liking you, to washing your car and it raining. It's not always consistent (because of free will - anyone can always break the curve) but because of the enormous amountof experience we can draw on and the consistency with which certain people tend to do, say certain things, act certain way, hang out with certain people, where certain things - with a lot of research and time, anybody can easily figure out what *most* people will do *most* of the time, which is why some fake fortune tellers can get away with being crooks. Often someone with powerful free will steps in and says, "I will prove this curve wrong." Like I said way earlier - chance is a possibility. The majority of divinators are indeed simply very learned in the ways of most people, but I am sure that some are gifted with this ability to really see what is most likely going to happen. Once again, things may or may not change. But experiences like that are indeed of a more parapsychological nature.
First point (again) Destiny is not the same as predetermination. Often people (especially here Ive read) refer to destiny as something that was set for us. Destiny is unchanging. No matter what we do, whatever happens was meant to happen. Now if you believe that some higher power has predetermined everything to be a certain way, then you get into a much stickier situation. But destiny is not synonymous with predetermination - it is synonymous with karma. And karma, if you do any research on eastern lifestyle and religion at all, you'll learn, is not determined by the actions you make and take in a good or bad way. Sometimes you will do good things that just are not noticed - same with bad. But like destiny, there is a very very strong tendency for certain things to happen in certain ways.
Basically we have free will undoubtedly, unless there is a chip installed in you making you do things against your rationale (though sometimes unseemably so) decision. Likewise, destiny is set in stone. Basically, you choose what you will do, and some things have a tendency to happen accoring to consensus reality - but it is not set in stone. There is always the ability to change the curve. Still, whatever happens was *destined* to happen, by the sheer nature of that concept, "destiny."
I have much more to say, But I'll continue this in my journal, and I hope somebody followed!
At times I feel like destiny is in my own hands, but then at others I feel like it is in the hands of the ones I love.
destiny is the result of our own choices everyday, mostly
i think there can be people and places and things that we feel a 'pull' about and would most likely end up with, but i also think that we can choose NOT to by our actions
I did choose the road I was on in the first place... Didn't like it and changed it... That's the beauty of being in charge of my destiny...
Anyway I understand what I'm trying to say... I have a feeling there will be no right answer for anyone here...
Now that I actually look back on some of the past posts in this forum post, I think it just depends on the person.
I believe that we make choices everyday that contribute to the outcome of our lives. I don't think our lives are set in stone when we are born. We travel a road that has bumps, curves, and turns. Our choices along this road will change our destiny on a daily basis. So I believe we form our own destiny.
everyone has a destiny and a purpose, we have some choices along our way, but the most of it was predetermined before our first breath.
I don't know... if everything is based on 'fate'- there's no sense in trying or giving effort to anything, is there? Not if it is pre-destined.
I Believe that we do have a pre determinded destiny.
I don't believe that our entire lives are plotted out for us to make it to our destiny though.
Because otherwise what would be the point in living if were just not choosing our paths but what were destined to pick.
we get to make our choices that lead to the path at the end of the road.
well personally i do think we hold our own destiny in our hands so to speak..meaning if something is givven to us we can either except it or reject it.
i believe that their are many opertunities that one has in a life time but in the long run it is up to us on which ones we decide to chose.
Your destiny changes with every second of every day. I walk out the door now and one set of occurrences take place for my entire life, I walk out the door 1 minute from now and it all changes.
I think that we dont make our own destiny. I believe that everything is plan before we are born.
Well my belief is simple, Destiny is a road map, a direction for us to follow that changes and grows with us. Or a series of lessons we agreed to learn our karmic contract for this life time. Which ever its a course for us to follow that gives us room to change, grow and develop.
Fate / Destiny (as an inescapable conclusion) exists for some while others don't give it a moment's thought.
I think it really depends on wether you're living your life passively or not...
I believe that there is a destiny to our lives, but the choices and everyday decisions dictate what the outcome will be... whether there is a true destined path to our lives, I am not sure of, but there are obstacles that are put in our lives to help guide us on our way.
This is a difficult question to answer.
Since there is no right or wrong answer.
I believe to an extent yes we do hold destiny in our hands, we decide what we are going to do, and how we live our life that is creating our own destiny, However there is unexplainable factors that may change our destiny for us.
thats true extreme but it is our chose on how we will travel as such it is still in our destiny to decide which parth we travel no matter what is put in front of us. We chose the right or wrong path
i am Christian and i believe God holds our fate and our destiney, but i also believe that we have a part in that
hell yeah! your destiny changes by every little thing you do.
i believe that fate can exist, because things that you do know affect so many other things, but likewise, its what YOU do. you determine the different paths that fate carves out for you. i also just dont like the idea of not being in control of your own future, it just doesnt make sense to me.
Always in Motion the future is. Our choices alter our destiny. Our destiny is what we make it out to be and what path we choose to follow.
i too think We make our own destiny, every time we make a choice we can change our destiny
i think that we are lead on a path by destiny. it is left up to the individual to pick the path and the outcome isn't always positive. that is just my opinion its not based on any research. :)
I think that it is a small amount of both; destiny has been narrowed down to several scenarios that we might possibly take, and the rest of the choice is ours when we reach that point in time.
Also (forgot to mention this): Sometimes we are driven to choose the scenario that is preferred by one we love or care about deeply, therefore our destiny is not being chosen by ourselves, but by those close to us.
I believe we are in control of our own decision making.
Therefore we can change ANYTHING we wish to change in our lives..
I have done just this... I was terribly unhappy with some aspects of my life and I made a decision and I changed the path.. what will happen in this said, path is the unknown.
We create our own destiny so to speak, by the deciphering.
heard of "reap what you sew"? and "life is what you make it"
I do believe there are lessons set out for each of us, along these paths in which we take.
The idea of destiny is a rather paradoxical one at that. While there are certainties in every choice, each choice has a resulting upper limit. The effect of this is known as free will.
Free will in and of itself is where underlying problems are uprooted and/or discovered. While each choice renders a different outcome, eventually they do converge back to a singular point. So the situation is more or less of a give and take scenario than most would allow themselves to admit.
A prime example of this seemingly initial paradox is reflected almost every religion. The beings in each story are destined to follow a specific path, much like humans, but are also at times tested with the option of making choices. It through this bizzare sequence of uncertainties that one learns lessons and ultimately shapes their own path through limited definition but infinite characteristics. While some of these figures may or may not have existed is still debated to this day, so in the end, you have to ask yourself, how much of your destiny is uncertain, and how much uncertainty is destined.
in my opinion...there is maybe something to destiny. one cant really say something like..i got my job and im destined to do this..or im witht his person that im destined to be with..i believe people create thier own destinies and work towards having themfullfilled one way or another ...
good subject mysticmoon :)
I believe we control our destiny to an extent. Some factors are out of our control. Personaly, I try not to think about where I am "destined" to end up. I live my life as best I can and take things as they come. Sure I have plans for the future, but I know my future is not set in stone.
i have to agree with ya colmillodeamor
live life to the fullest..is too short to wonder where one is supposed to end up :)
yea i think we make our own destiny but sometimes it goes the other way round also and thats when you are very unlucky.
difficult one. I think you don't because.. if so..
why is life sometimes so fucked up?
I don't choose it to be fucked up, If I could.. I would be happy all the time..
I agree with CountVitus on this one, we do not hold our destiny's in our hands, it is all down to the way that we live our lives.......like if you smoke or drink a lot then you are most likely to kill yourself from it........that is what i believe, it may not be the best example to give but i think you get my drift........=)
Of course we hold our own destiny in our hands.
If you want something, then you have the choice to go after it. It's your own fault if you don't reach it.
Fate on the other hand, I try to stay away from. I don't like thinking that we're not in control of our own lives.
Mortangia.. I think that may be down to other factors afflicting 'life'
I'd LOVE to get rid of ALL politicians.. and have my own back Bench.
It'd change life around me, But it won't change MY life per say.
I understand where you're coming from tho..
Famine/ homelessness/ poverty/ pollution and the like..
Destiny is simply an excuse to accept things as they happen, while not having the ambition to do anything to change circumstances
well in that we make our own road in this world and it is about the choices we make and that is how we are guided in this world and i feel that the choices we make pickes the road we walk down in this life
How can it be justified or denied, are some people destined to be alone forever, are some people destined to die at war or starve to death in a prison camp?
Its a hard things to understand I believe all anyone can do is beleive what they will about it, as for me I believe there may be some merit to it.
I believe destiny can only take you so far...then the rest is up to you.
Through our lives we will face many challeneges and will have to make many choices, our free will permits us to make those choices whatever they be.
from time to time we make the wrong choices but we always get back on track in the end.. Throught the choices we make our Destiny is shaped for us.
I think our lives are just random events that happen to us for no rhyme or reason... They things we do affects these events, but there is no way to controll them or keep them from happening. I don't believe in destiny (kinda funny considering my real name is destiney) or soulmates. I define a soulmate as someone that is perfect for you in the sense that you have common interests, goals, backgrounds, etc. It doesn't mean your meant to be together....
I think that our destinies are already set; the ending is already chosen for us. However, we can shape what happens in between, and the ways we reach the ending.
I think it's a factor of both. We can make our destinies and there r other factors. Our decisions lead up to our destiny.
I believe it would be for certain people that believe in that sort kind of thing.
I believe we chose are own destiny to a point...how we live out our lives and such is determined by ourselves and the decisions we make, but overall in the end, how we die, and where are spirits will go, is pre determined
Me too, I think we make our own destiny, we controll our lives byself, the way we act, all what we do, everythings comes back.
such an interesting subject, are things predetermind,is there a plan, does the one above or the ones above know who will go to hell and who will not, do they know our every move, if those who were already destined for heaven be able to just do what they want b/c they know where they're going hmm such an interesting thing, it makes u think, it makes u want to obtain input absorb it completely and simply explore all the possibiliteis I am not going to give my oppinon b/c I really don't have one I don't belive just one thing.
to me we are all destined to do something or another but both destiny and fate are to me more like blue prints of what could and will happen if certain paths are followed. In a sense you have full control to a point but once you push for one direction once set in motion it will become hard to stop....
i think everybodys destiny is preordained and you will eventually get to where you are suppose to in life but your choices and the choices around you alter the path you take to get there
